Actor purse fight. Marky Mark is still a douche nozzle who thinks we little people shouldn't own guns. From what I have read what Tom said was taken outta context (not that it matters) but when people start "respecting" actors for political stances they have another link in the dumbing down of America.6 points

I think a change in language might be useful here. Regardless of how most non-progressives feel about him, there's still a lot of distance between Obama as the elected President of the United States and "dictator". He's not torturing, imprisoning or killing political opponents. He's not outlawing the press. People are still free to gather. People are still able to protest. This current debate surrounding healthcare is a wonderful example of that. He just lost a vote in the House with 39 Democrats joining the Republicans in a 261-157 vote to reject his "vision" from yesterday and act on their own. One can argue a lot about the abuses of Executive power, and frankly that doesn't rest solely in the lap of this administration. But, we're a long way from a dictatorship. I only make this point because I think language is important - and lacking in the national discourse right now.4 points

I realize this is a rather long read but I have read it in the past and a friend sent it to me again this morning and requested I forward it. I thought I would forward it here as I think it is a great reminder of truth. Cemetery Watchmen . My friend Kevin and I are volunteers at a National cemetery in Oklahoma and put in a few days a month in a 'slightly larger' uniform. Today had been a long, long day and I just wanted to get the day over with and go down to Smokey's and have a cold one. Sneaking a look at my watch, I saw the time, 16:55 . Five minutes to go before the cemetery gates are closed for the day. Full dress was hot in the August sun Oklahoma summertime was as bad as ever--the heat and humidity at the same level--both too high. I saw the car pull into the drive, '69 or '70 model Cadillac Deville, looked factory-new. It pulled into the parking lot at a snail's pace.. An old woman got out so slow I thought she was paralyzed; she had a cane and a sheaf of flowers--about four or five bunches as best I could tell. I couldn't help myself. The thought came unwanted, and left a slightly bitter taste: 'She's going to spend an hour, and for this old soldier, my hip hurts like hell and I'm ready to get out of here right now!' But for this day, my duty was to assist anyone coming in. Kevin would lock the 'In' gate and if I could hurry the old biddy along, we might make it to Smokey's in time. I broke post attention. My hip made gritty noises when I took the first step and the pain went up a notch. I must have made a real military sight: middle-aged man with a small pot gut and half a limp, in marine full-dress uniform, which had lost its razor crease about thirty minutes after I beganthe watch at the cemetery. I stopped in front of her, halfway up the walk. She looked up at me with an old woman's squint. 'Ma'am, may I assist you in any way?' She took long enough to answer. 'Yes, son. Can you carry these flowers? I seem to be moving a tad slow these days.' 'My pleasure, ma'am.' (Well, it wasn't too much of a lie.) She looked again. 'Marine, where were you stationed?' ' Vietnam , ma'am.. Ground-pounder. '69 to '71.' She looked at me closer. 'Wounded in action, I see. Well done, Marine. I'll be as quick as I can.' I lied a little bigger: 'No hurry, ma'am.' She smiled and winked at me. 'Son, I'm 85-years-old and I can tell a lie from a long way off.. Let's get this done. Might be the last time I can do this. My name's Joanne Wieserman, and I've a few Marines I'd like to see one more time..' 'Yes, ma 'am. At your service.' She headed for the World War I section, stopping at a stone. She picked one of the flower bunches out of my arm and laid it on top of the stone. She murmured something I couldn't quite make out.. The name on the marble was Donald S. Davidson, USMC: France 1918. She turned away and made a straight line for the World War II section, stopping at one stone I saw a tear slowly tracking its way down her cheek. She put a bunch on a stone; the name was Stephen X.Davidson, USMC, 1943. She went up the row a ways and laid another bunch on a stone,Stanley J. Wieserman, USMC, 1944.. She paused for a second and more tears flowed. 'Two more, son, and we'll be done' I almost didn't say anything, but, 'Yes, ma'am. Take your time.' She looked confused.. 'Where's the Vietnam section, son? I seem to have lost my way.' I pointed with my chin. 'That way, ma'am.' 'Oh!' she chuckled quietly. 'Son, me and old age ain't too friendly.' She headed down the walk I'd pointed at. She stopped at a couple of stones before she found the ones she wanted. She placed a bunch onLarry Wieserman, USMC, 1968, and the laston Darrel Wieserman, USMC, 1970. She stood there and murmured a few words I still couldn't make out and more tears flowed. 'OK, son, I'm finished. Get me back to my car and you can go home.' Yes, ma'am. If I may ask, were those your kinfolk?' She paused. 'Yes, Donald Davidson was my father, Stephenwas my uncle, Stanleywas my husband,Larryand Darrelwere our sons. All killed in action, all Marines.' She stopped! Whether she had finished, or couldn't finish, I don't know. She made her way to her car, slowly and painfully. I waited for a polite distance to come between us and then double-timed it over to Kevin, waiting by the car. 'Get to the 'Out' gate quick.. I have something I've got to do.' Kevin started to say something, but saw the look I gave him. He broke the rules to get us down the service road fast. We beat her. She hadn't made it around the rotunda yet. 'Kevin, stand at attention next to the gatepost. Follow my lead.' I humped it across the drive to the other post. When the Cadillac came puttering around from the hedges and began the short straight traverse to the gate, I called in my best gunny's voice: 'TehenHut! Present Haaaarms!' I have to hand it to Kevin; he never blinked an eye--full dress attention and a salute that would make his DI proud. She drove through that gate with two old worn-out soldiers giving her a send-off she deserved, for service rendered to her country, and for knowing duty, honor and sacrifice far beyond the realm of most. I am not sure, but I think I saw a salute returned from that Cadillac. Instead of 'The End,' just think of 'Taps.' As a final thought on my part, let me share a favorite prayer: 'Lord, keep our servicemen and women safe, whether they serve at home or overseas. Hold them in your loving hands and protect them as they protect us.' Let's all keep those currently serving and those who have gone before in our thoughts. They are the reason for the many freedoms we enjoy. 'In God We Trust.' Sorry about your monitor; it made mine blurry too! If we ever forget that we're one nation under God, then we will be a nation gone under!3 points

I respectfully disagree. The Birthers and "the go back to Kenya" crowd have almost made the GOP and the TEA Party a laughing stock. As someone stated earlier, the minute that something stupid is said you are going to lose your potential audience. You need to be putting facts and solutions out there. Calling Obama a commie doesn't go very far in gaining support against bad policy.3 points
-
Seriously? Obama isn’t going to be impeached; move on. Obama may be a lot of things; but stupid isn’t one of them. He promised jobs and a better economy. It hasn’t happened. He is the one keeping people whining about guns and health care front and center. Keeps the focus off the tough issues. I see people on here crying about the “sheeple†and “the uninformedâ€; look in the mirror. This guy takes you by the hand and leads you right down the path he wants you to go.3 points

The IRS hasn't tortured, imprisoned or killed any of Obama's opponents yet. Yes, they did slow down applications. They might (and that's a long shot might) have cost Romney the election. That needs to be investigated and adjudicated if necessary. But let's be clear about our language. Not all of the press goes along willingly. The Wall Street Journal has a million more daily subscribers than it's nearest two competitors. I read it every morning. They aren't cutting the man an inch of slack. I haven't seen y'all's beloved Fox News skipping alongside Obama. Yes, most of the media is centered in major population centers (New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta) and their editorial bent reflects their politics. That's nothing new. But both sides are represented. The administration may have some allies in the management of the big media conglomerates, but we're a long way from state controlled media. I was in Washington D.C. a few weeks ago - albeit grudgingly. There were people protesting Obamacare in front of the White House. That'll get you killed in a lot of places. I've been to a bunch of them. America isn't one of them. We've got big problems. Let's not let them take the easy path because we're focused on the wrong things. By focusing on Obama as a kind of boogeyman, you lose focus on the arguments that'll actually get you somewhere. As soon as the word "dictator" comes out of your mouth, people are immediately dismissive of the rest of the conversation. Why don't we focus on what he's not instead? He's a president that has failed to deliver on a single promise he's made yet - both domestically and abroad. He talks a big game, but when it comes to delivering, he's a complete failure. All I'm saying is that our arguments should be supported by our language.3 points

Luke, I think the issue with DaveS was posting incorrect information as fact about TN law, and then when shown the exactly law he continued to argue that state law prohibited something. I had no idea on his background, and no clue on what the rules are for different types of badges on TGO. IMHO somebody with a law enforcement badge on the forum needs to be careful posting incorrect information on TN firearm laws since many users will tend to take the badge into account when reading their opinions on the law. I don't think anybody wishes to keep DaveS from giving his opinion... only giving bad facts about TN law... Lets recap... DaveS stated: 1. TN doesn't honor permits from Maine 2. TN law requires that you be 21 to carry a pistol on an out of state permit 3. TN doesn't honor all state permits only states that honor TN permits None of these statements are correct... TN firearm laws are a confusing mess on their own... the last thing we need is to have somebody spreading even more misinformation. You're entitled to your own opinions, but you can't be entitled to your own 'facts' :)3 points

Wow! Last year I had a HUGE owl flying through the trees for about an hour. Kind of forgot about him and turned around to find him sitting on a branch about 10 feet in front of me at eye level! He just stared at me for about 20 minutes. At first I thought "How cool is this!" Then I started thinking, "Is he sizing me up!?!?" HA HA Guess he may have been. If I hadn't been chewing on a chicken leg, he might have thought me a formidable opponent  (The last sentence was made up obviously lol)2 points

Sometimes you just have to do the right thing. Often it benefits you in ways that are hard to see coming when you do it. The Republicans have tried to "box clever" for too long and it has failed them (and the country) over and over again. Largely because they (not all of them but enough) temper their decisions with greed and thoughts of the next election and partly because they're just not smart enough to play their game. Ideally, the test for initiating impeachment would be "Do we think he's done impeachable things?". Unfortunately, that doesn't fly. Personally, I am still pretty outraged over Benghazi and I think it's a betrayal that that hasn't been split wide open. That Holder is still in place after Fast and Furious is just incredulous to me and implies some really serious problems with what is going on. Obamacare is almost a sideshow in comparison in my opinion.2 points
-
For the impeachment crowd, I'd argue what does it matter? What's the fight going to get you? Let's fight the battles where we can make a difference. The GOP needs to have a unified message right now that this whole mess is but a portent of things to come if you let the government take over healthcare. Mind you, then they have to offer a compelling plan of their own, and that's when the wheels start to come off.2 points

I've been thinking about this all day, and I thought I'd give some insight into an administrative action I took last night. A look behind the curtain if you will. We can have conversations about race on TGO. We regularly have good discussions on a variety of issues here, and there aren't really any topics that are verboten. That said, when we're talking about difficult or potentially controversial issues, our position is pretty much the same as we discussed in the post regarding anti-law enforcement threads - either bring something to the discussion or don't participate. We have almost 20,000 users on TGO at this point. People from every area of the state and every background are represented. Not everyone looks like you. Not everyone has the same views as you. I wouldn't ask anyone to change their views just to please someone else. Far to the contrary, we encourage good debate on conversations that are worth having. But, we do ask that everyone show some respect for the other voices at the table. When it comes to racial issues, TGO will not tolerate hateful language. Period. It colors all of us as a community in a negative light.2 points

If they were just making money on your (or my) money, I have no problem with that. It's when they print money and give it to the banks to lend out, both debasing the currency and also damaging savings by forcing interest rates to be artificially low that I have issues. All this money floating around causes bubbles also which ultimately pop (c.f. dotcom boom, housing bubble and others), further taking value from the pockets of the general populous. The population of the US (and other countries) are being robbed blind. Good for you that you are doing well. I'm not doing so bad myself. But whereas a rising tide lifts all boats, a lowered tide just stinks. End the fed, slash regulations and let's see real free markets.1 point

I concur wholeheartedly with you on this and I especially find it ironic how freely "commie" is used because if we truly lived under the red flag with the golden star(s) and sickle, it wouldn't be tolerated. Moving on...re: the economy. As for me and my circle, well, we aren't complaining about our "personal" economy. Inflated, overvalued or whatever phenomenon you want to say it is, the stock market has been kind to us under Obama and I guarantee you that businesses in the Dow Jones and Nasdaq aren't complaining either. If they are, well I'm calling BS. Whether the market is over inflated or not, I could careless because I Iove my Ruger, Smith and Wesson, and Taser International stocks, hint hint and bank account is loving it more. I'm so freaking glad I didn't listen to the chicken little tin foil nitwits out there. I guarantee you that the people who hang on every word of the scare-o-ticians are probably afraid to invest because of the so called "uncertainty". Well I'm here to tell you, scared money don't make money. Long live capitalism and the stock market!!!1 point

Sums up the last 5 years about perfectly. Of course the GOPs problems go back farther than that. I wouldn't quite put the ACA on the same plane as the whole Kenya thing though. I think for Obama that was a great opportunity to prove to his people that he was too strong to submit to the whims of a fringe few by showing proof. Same with the shut down. Who wouldn't love to give their opposition exactly what they publicly demanded and make it hurt so bad? He got exactly what he wanted out of that which was to "prove" that we needed all the government we have and only a lunatic would say otherwise. He also got to make the republicans out to be a bunch of cry babies who write checks they can't cash by shutting down the war monuments. The ACA on the other hand has and will continue to crap on everyone, including his supporters. He would love for this problem to go away I'm sure. Either way, someone could leak incontrovertible video evidence, with audio, of O punching his own grandmother and he still wouldn't have a shot at impeachment. We need to be setting our sights a bit farther, 2014 is important, 2016 will be as well. Obama is NOT going to declare himself Tsar, or King, and if America does become a communist country in the next couple of years  it will only be the American people to blame, not Obama.1 point

I added a closing brace to your post above to close your quote. I fully agree that the executive branch is grabbing power in ways that our founding fathers couldn't foresee when they created coequal branches of government. And the executive branch isn't alone. The legislative and judicial branches have certainly availed themselves of every opportunity they could to grab power as well. Power is attracted to power, and statists are going to state - if you will. What else should we expect? That's the nature of institutions that are unchecked by their constituent members. But, Obama's speech yesterday wasn't that of a dictator. I'm not a fan of the man, and I'd love to seem him leave office a frustrated man. But, let's give the process credit where it's due. He gave a speech yesterday outlining his particular vision of the future, and half of the legislative branch just rejected it outright. His party is stampeding for the exits and that's a good thing. He's not making laws, yet. Even if Democrats had gone for his plan yesterday, it would have still had to have been introduced by Congress. It may not be perfect. It may not be going our way. But the process is holding for now.1 point

Welcome from Ooltewah. You mention you are interested in IDPA. The Cleveland IDPA match (Cleveland Hunting Rifle and Pistol Club) is the 3rd weekend every month. So it will be this weekend. There is a match at the Chattanooga Rifle club the 2nd Sunday of each month. And the 4th Saturday of each month they do a match in Dayton at "The Ridge" . Plenty of opportunities to shoot IDPA in the area.1 point

Many actors from years past were remarkable people. John Wayne, Lee Marvin, Robert Mitchum, Audey Murphy and so many others did serve their country with honors in the military prior to becoming actors. Lee Marvin is buried in Arlington Cemetery in Washington DC. These were people of integrity and honor. Hollywood today is not the Hollywood of years ago. I take what the actors of today say with a grain of salt and just let it roll off my back and go on. There may be a couple out there that are true patriots but they are like many politicians and will either not say anything against the establishment for fear of losing their jobs. The ones that have enough money and don't need to work again that are finally coming out and expressing their true feelings..............jmho1 point

welcome! I would be happy to help if you need hands-on reloading support, or if you ask here you get plenty of help from many, there are tons of old threads on what to buy etc kicking around. Also sportsmans warehouse has a very basic how-to class with Q&A after that might be worth a look. Buying most anything except 22 or bottom shelf 9mm / 223 / etc saves a bunch of money per round fired. 45 will get you more than 50% savings for better quality ammo than the "cheap" 45 practice stuff.1 point

I've always thought if their end goal was a single payer system, then the ACA was a brilliant opening move, as no private entity can compete with an organization that is willing to operate at a loss quarter after quarter. If you're really wanting a good conspiracy theory to chew on, maybe the "failed" rollout was actually planned to accelerate the transition... Personally, I don't buy that theory. I don't think they're smart enough to pull it off.1 point

The insurers are gonna take a bath on this. No way is the math going to work for them in the individual market. They're simply going to wind up top heavy with older folks, who aren't paying any more than young healthy folks, who aren't going to ante up in enough numbers. Matter of fact, 18-30 year olds have probably overall become the poorest demographic in the country, and probably at least 25% of them are Medicaid eligible and at least another 25% eligible for subsidies to pay most of the premium. And it's a laugh to think the "penalties" will take up the slack, and the small percentage ever collected don't go to the insurance companies either. The only thing the ACA is successfully doing is hugely expanding the Medicaid population, which of course is just spending tax money, or actually, mostly the money off the printing presses. Looks to me like BHO's plan is actually working out just as he wanted -- the gummit will be "forced" to step in and "save" American Health Care, by taking it over and managing it 100%. - OS1 point

Unfortunately, the business world is a bit more complicated than a grade school playground. "Do-overs" don't really work in an adult environment. And the 7 million or so whose plans have already been canceled? Are those plans suddenly 'un-cancelled'? If so, this is black Friday for the insurance industry. The law was so bad it required massive bribery and massive lying to the people to pass it. The law is so bad that to actually enforce it would cause devastation to the Democrat party (thus the delay of the employer mandate). The law is so bad that the ratio of people who have so far lost their insurance to the number of people who have actually gotten insured is better than 50 to 1. Hey, "It's the law of the land". "Wanting to delay Obamacare means you're a bomb throwing terrorist". "Only whacko-birds would try to stop this". "I insist on full and immediate implementation of Obamacare There will be no negotiation, and I will ensure the American people feel the greatest pain from any (microscopically partial) government shutdown". You know what? I insist on full and immediate implementation of Obamacare as well. (It's the very best way to get it repealed). I guess Obama has pivoted to jobs - the jobs of Democrats in Congress.1 point

I'd be very hesitant about walking around with a long gun in the opening hours of a disaster, even a large scale one. At the beginning there will probably still be some semblance of law and order, and I'd rather not draw that kind of attention to myself. For me the most likely situation would be having to get from my office in an urban area to home in a rural one across 35 miles and a couple rivers or creeks. Rather than the weight and attention of a long gun, better to have a concealable sidearm, water, CASH (sorry no one's going to be bartering copper rounds and fish hooks at this point), good shoes, and protection from the elements. Another issue that I think about, probably best for a new thread, is communication. Are your kids in school? Spouse working on the other side of town? What if the phones are down? How do you link up? This is something to which I've given some thought but haven't really come up with a plan.1 point
