  8. I don't know how many nature lovers we have here  but I really enjoy the birds. All kinds. I have had a pair of robins that have nested on my house for two years now. Last year they raise 3 babies , with my help of course. I know how hard they struggle to find enough food for them and the babies so i kind help out a little. Last year it cost me about 20.00 in buying crickets and meal worms to raise the tree. This year they have a new nest and have three babies again and I ahve made two trips to the bait shop to help in the feeding. It has gotten funny as they have developed a trust with me and I walk out in the drive way now and put out baby food and both adults are right at my feet getting the food. They pick it up and beat it against the ground till it is dead and soft and then fly up on the nest and you can see those mouths open up and they begin poking the food in. It is really enjoyable watching them. I have taken down my seed feeders and hung 3 Humming bird feeders. I know it's a little early for them but want to make sure any early travelers have a resting point here and they can feed u before continuing on their journey east. When they arrive here or the summer I will have 7 feeders out and normally I will have 25 or more birds remain here all summer. Love watching them fuss and feud over the feeders. Oh well, just wanted to see how many folks here enjoy the birds........

  9. Circle One.(I would circle one, but I seem to have misplaced my crayons) Do you own a firearm? Yes Have you ever owned a firearm? If I do own one then I have owned one. Do you plan on owning a firearm? If I do own one and I have owned one then I guess I plan on owning one. How much experience do you have with firearms? That depends on your perspective. Are you for gun rights or gun control? See answer to question 1. Write out the answers to the following questions. Please define gun rights. I have the right to own firearms. Please define gun control. Any attempt to try and regulate my right to own firearms and any item related to them. How much do you agree/disagree with the following statements? Circle One. (Again, I looked, but I still can't find those crayolas, I bet my 4 year old ate them again.) 1. Background checks should be mandatory for anyone who owns or uses firearms. You don't have to have a background check to buy alcohol or a car and that combination kills a lot more people every year. 2. High capacity magazines should not be banned. I believe in standard capacity magazines. 3. All firearms should be registered. What good would registering my firearms do? Would it stop me from committing a crime with them? 4. Sale of ammunition should not be restricted to purchases done in person. See answer to "Please define gun control." 5. Any private entity should be allowed to ban firearms at their establishment. Their business to ban, my business to take my business elsewhere. (One reason why I don't vacation in NYC.) 6. City governments should not be allowed to ban firearms within city limits. If every little municipality in TN were permitted to allow or ban guns... could you imagine the confusion? 7. There should be a limit on the number of firearms a person can own at any moment. Have you ever tried to shoot two guns at once? I have, it's not like you see in the movies at all, it's hard to hit anything. So, if I can only shoot one gun at a time accurately then it shouldn't matter how many I own. (That's why I don't believe in evolution, if I evolved I'd have four arms and a tail.) 8. Gun control restrictions need not be as stringent in rural areas. Depends on you perspective. I bet these bystanders have an interesting perspective... http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/1830007/ 9. Automatic firearms should be banned. See answer to "Please define gun control."

  10. I would hate to be in a courtroom trying to justify a 25 YARD shot with a handgun. 25 FEET... yeah. And that's what the small guns you mentioned are for. Yes, the bullet goes much farther... but my understanding is a valid self defense scenario is close up and personal.

  11.   Pizza=good. Ted S for president under the pizza party!   I figure it can't hurt confirming what they should already know. If it's someone writing a paper what harm can it do, and if its someone just trolling we'll figure it out. Can't see the point in an NSA sting to get folks on a gun owners board to admit they own guns, seems redundant even by government standards. Its true what was said above though, give a little get a little. I'd be a lot more inclined to go in depth if I had an idea who I was talking too. The fact that student won't even share his .edu email but went out of his way to set up a yahoo email in the fashion of one gives me a case of the  . The reporter from the Tennessean used his real name and email and got people opening up candidly quickly.

  18. So I was installing a water line today at a very old, backwoods house and dug up something intresting. Its an 1851 Colt Navy pattern cap and ball. I disassembled it to a degree at lunch, it is complete except for the grips. Just thought Id share the coolest thing I ever dug up. My guess is its a reproduction, but not sure how to tell. It was a good 2 ft in the ground. Tapatalk ate my spelling.

  19.   No need for me to write all this out again, TDR got them all right the first time.  So score me "ditto" ...    I would also suggest that you take a course or two in statistics, with special emphasis on surveys, the introduction of bias, random sampling, margin of error, etc. as this is a poorly contrived and executed survey.  In addition, it's shocking that you aren't employing better technology to survey your respondents, even an old fart like me realizes there are much more convenient ways to sample populations via the internet ...

  20. I use the occasional what Hemingway described as a "five dollar word", but it's just what comes up naturally in train of thought, can't override a fairly classical Engleesh education without consciously trying.   I'm more irritated with common words misused. The usual there/their/they're and it's/its and the like don't gall me much, but some others do for some reason, like:   "weary" when most of the time the person means "wary" or "leery"   "discrete" when it usually should be "discreet"   "marshal law"   others?   But for the "5 dollar word of the day" theme, I'll toss in:   ecdysiast : A performer who provides erotic entertainment by undressing to music   :)   - OS

  22. All you're getting from me is an opinion, as I am NOT a gunfighter. I would say to practice instinctive shooting (point shooting; not aiming) at 5 and 7 yards, and aiming and firing at 15 yards.   Getting the gun out of your holster and into action quickly would be much more important to me than accuracy. Odds are that if you find yourself in a real world situation, it'll be stick it in his belly and fire.   Furthermore, I believe that we'd all do well to practice daily being aware of our surroundings. Most people are not. This will keep one out of a lot of bad situations with no gun required.

  23. I heard this last night on Channel 5 news and the only thing that got me about the whole story was a Mustang with a red hood. Question 1 ) What color was the rest of the car. Question 2 ) If it was a red Mustang with a red hood would probably not be much of a clue?   Gotta love new medias for not asking the right questions like, "What color was the rest of the car"? If it's a White Mustang with a red hood or a green Mustang with a red hood, should be pretty easy find. If it's a red Mustang with a red hood, gonna be a problem..............jmho

  37.   $500 fine and possible suspension or revocation of carry permit.   That "Patron State of Shootin' Stuff" moniker belies the whole premise of TN weapons law -- it is illegal to possess a loaded firearm. Everything that allows you to differ from that is an exception or defense to that starting point philosophy.   - OS

  39. I did my share of hunting over the years to put food on the table some and to just have extra freezer meat and save on pocket book. Then one day back in 1990 I was deer hunting with youngest son on his place and he put me up in a great ladder stand all painted camo and really comfortable and it was his favorite stand and he had been seeing a14 point buck chasing does on his place and had been trying to bag hi since Bow season and it was now gun season. I'm setting in the stand with my model 94 Winchester and I see this huge buck moving through a thicket coming in my direction. My son is also watching the deer about 350 yards away through binoculars. he just knows it is his buck and he said dang daddy's gonna bag my big buck. There was about 4 Persimmon trees about 10 yards out from the stand and about 10 minutes passed and I was 10 yards away from a   buck with a great rack and thick neck and about 225 on the hoof eating persimmons and I sat there and watch this magnificent majestic creature eating persimmons and several times he looked right up at me and he knew I was not going to shoot him. He ate for about 15 minutes before moving back into the thicket. My son showed up about 20 minutes later and we began the walk back to his house and he said "ya know dad, it might be time for you to quit hunting till you get some new glasses cause you can't see to good with those, and I laughed and said " Are you talking about the 14 that was standing in front of me eating persimmons"? he said "Yep". I just looked at him and said "Son, It's only me now at the house, my freezer is full from folks bringing me deer meat and fish and you have known all your life I am not a trophy hunter and me and that old deer made a deal, He looked up and me and winked and I winked back and I think he knew I would not shoot him." I told my son that day I will never drop a hammer on another wild critter for food unless I am starving and have no other options. Right now I have deer meat and fish in my freezers and have not Crappie fish in years and have not deer hunted since that day. I don't judge other folks if they hunt because that has been a way of life since the beginning of time and fishing the same way. I love to bass fish but I catch and release. I don't keep them. I am a fishing sportsman and don't fish for grease.............jmho

  41. Thanks guys. I enjoyed teaching both classes and hopefully we will be doing some more classes soon in Knoxville.   We had talked about offering a "Suarez Regional Training Day" in August if there is interest in that . Those are typically a 6 hour block of working on specific skills with a price range of normally $60 to $80. If there is enough interest we may go ahead and schedule it for Aug 3 since I'll already be in the area for the ORSA SECRET CITY IDPA match on Aug 2.

  47. Here's my uber high end WASR. :) Apparently the rumors are true that they've sobered up the Romanians on the line some and take a bit more care on this end at CIA too, everything is straight. Mag wooble, yes, but not loose enough to rattle when carrying or anything, so good enough for moi. Added sling, UTG butt pad (yes I'm a wimp, first 120 rounds left a bruise on my widdle shoulder), and a QD UTG side rail mount with a cheapo 4x scope. The "Sniper" scope is second one I've bought, 24 clams!, with rings!, and the first one has held up well on one of my ARs for quite a few rounds -- knock on wood but if they last will be the most solid firearm related purchases ever. Oh yeah, also put a bolt buffer in there, definitely nice to take away the metal on metal feel and sound. Oddly, the unfinished wood is solid, not the plywood laminate pictured at CIA or Buds, with solid steel buttpad, no hole in it or stock for cleaning kit. Seems quite nice actually. I'm gonna take all the wood off and tung oil it over a couple weeks if I can get to where I don't feel compelled to shoot it every few days! - OS

  49.   Oh.   My 2 cents on *that* .... one caliber, even one single handgun, is "enough".   Knowing how to operate a variety of firearms is good, and having a sense of how to shoot stuff with a stout recoil or an impossible action is important.   But a single pistol is sufficient and having a few hundred rounds of practice ammo & 50-100 defense rounds is more than enough for anything short of the end of the world.   An old saying about the guy with one gun knowing how to use it really well comes to mind...     My advice on a "system" for a new permit holder is to carry one gun, shoot it weekly at the range if possible, get *good* with it not only accuracy but speed, drawing, reloading, etc.  That is, drill with the gun often as if you were under attack by the target.  If your range does not allow drawing, do it at home unloaded and safely, just you by yourself and pointed in a safe direction as best you can etc.  Buy or make cheap ammo and shoot it up.    But at the end of the day the odds of you needing more than 2-3 mags worth of ammo in a lifetime should be slim.  If not, you need to consider your lifestyle or something.   I mean, I have managed to not have to fire a gun at anyone ever, and have carried one since the mid 90s, so 2 decades of not having to "use" even 1 round of ammo.  I like to shoot, and practice a lot, but with any luck I will live my life without firing a single shot at another person.
