  1. My dog is my best friend and has been for 7 years. If someone took him I would raise HELL to get him back. If I were in your position I would use any means possible to get him back. Once back in your home, make sure he has the proper ID on a tag, microchip or anything else secured on him so this doesn't happen again. Anyone that shoots a dog just for being on their property is a pretty big piece of sh*t, btw. I never understood why some property owners did that. There's a shooting instructor in Middle TN that I heard brags about shooting dogs that have gotten into his yard. Some people deserve a special place in hell.

  2. I'm a huge dog lover and I have a passionate dislike for anyone that tries to scam people. If I feel that I'm wronged I don't hesitate to escalate through courts or other methods to get a fair resolution. And I hate to see any animals hurt, killed, chased, harassed, or mistreated in any way. In this case I think it comes down to the fact that your dog was running loose off your property, something you admit that he does often. Thus he was very likely off of your property when he was picked up. Whether he was picked up by a stranger or the dog pound doesn't really matter, it is against the law to let your dogs run loose, and it is entirely lawful for a loose dog to be detained or impounded. Now the question of ownership transfer gets a little complicated based on various factors, but in general if your dog was allowed to run loose and he was subsequently detained without any chip or collar to identify the owner, then a shelter or private person only has to wait a short time to see if an owner comes forward, and they generally only have to make a minimum attempt at advertising, and then if no owner comes forward to claim the dog it becomes their property. In the case of the dog pound or many shelters he would have been euthanized in just a few weeks, so you are very lucky that someone caught him and put him in a rescue shelter instead. If my dog had gone missing I would have immediately put signs up everywhere within a several mile area, contacted all of the nearby shelters and vets and neighbors, and checked back with them often until he was found. But then I never let my dog run loose, and he is microchipped, and he always has a collar on with multiple tags, he even has a special tag with his own email address and toll free hot line announcing a reward if found, so it's pretty unlikely that he would ever be missing to begin with. In your case I would have gone to get the dog immediately, taking off work or changing plans if needed, and gladly paid any fee or reward to whoever kept him alive. Even if they offered me a free return, I would have insisted on giving them a nice sum to compensate for their caring and feeding for the dog for so long. And then I would immediately take the dog to a vet for a full checkup, have him microchipped, get him a new collar with ID and rabies tags, and find a way to fence him in or secure him so he doesn't run loose in the future. The only way I could see you going on the offensive here would be if your dog was properly tagged, microchipped, and detained on your land but someone trespassed to steal your dog and deliberately kept him away from you. But you would need a lot of evidence to prove that, and it would be highly unlikely to occur. In any event I'm happy that you did find your dog, and I hope the return goes smoothly, and that you don't let him run loose again in the future.

  3. You'd probably need to come see where i, and probably glowdotGlock live. We don't all live in a subdivision or apartment. My dog stays in the house most of the time, but goes out as he pleases. Most of my neighbors have dogs who aren't chained as well. It is very rural here, and we all know each other like family. I know every dog in our neighborhood, and all their names. I think our situation might be a bit different than what you're accustomed to.   My neighbors' dogs will occasionally come get mine. They'll all go swim in a pond, dig for moles, and wrestle and play about the place. Later, they'll all divide up and go home for a nap. Doesn't seem like a bad life to me.

  7. For $80, just pay it and don't even worry about it.  You will have your dog back and that is what matters.  I would pay multiple times that if my dog went missing, whether it was purposeful or not.   You don't have to like the guy, but at least your dog is alive.

  8. So this guy stole your dog, and is now basically trying to sell it back to you.  If he admitted it was 800 feet from your property, it was likely from the top of your driveway.    EFFE that!   Get your hands on your dog and leave.  If he balks call the law and press charges against him and the rescue organization.   A person cannot just pick up random dogs, and sell them back for a profit!  Only the local animal shelter has the right to pick up dogs. Honestly, I would be tempted to show up with LE to pick up my dog aka my property.

  9. Did your dog have tags with your contact info (or a microchip) when he was picked up? If so, wouldn't that be theft and possession of stolen property since he agreed it's your dog and admitted to taking him from near your home? Turning over the dog in exchange for you not pressing charges might seem like a pretty fair deal to him.   If you don't keep tags on him, then it would be a reasonable assumption on his part that your dog was a stray. He very well could be a dog lover who didn't want to see the poor guy out on his own. On the plus side, you haven't had to buy dog food for 6 months, so maybe that could factor in to the "re-homing fee"?

  10. Does not sound on the up and up but most important in my mine would be to get my dog back and pay the fee and then go after them in court. Check with county, city and any one else to see if they are licensed to legally be a Rescue Center or are they just a dog scam outfit...............jmho

  15. I am truly glad you are getting your best friend back Glow but I would go the micro chip route if he runs loose any at all. After being living and eating at another location for 6 month dogs have this thing about sometimes going back home to familiar surroundings and if loose he may wind up in another county on his own this time.  He may decide the other place is home........Stranger things have happened......................jmho

  16. The notion of letting a pet run loose is sometimes viewed as natural or traditional, especially around more rural areas. Some owners feel it is only right to let them have their freedom, and some folks enjoy having stray pets come to visit once in a while. These folks may have been raised in a culture that pets were only outside animals, not much different than birds or squirrels that you enjoy seeing and occasionally feed but otherwise don't do much about. Other folks have a romantic vision of their pets going out to play, making friends, visiting neighbors, communicating with other animals, and generally having a great time and then always finding their way home at the end of the day to rejoin their loving family after a fun day of adventure, similar to the crap that you see in the Disney movies. But the harsh reality is that a loose pet will usually just be searching for food or sex, or most often just looking for some loving attention from other animals or humans that are willing to pet and play with it. And if you leave a pet outside during rain or hot/cold weather then he is often just looking for better shelter.   So if you really care about your pet (and your neighbors and their pets) then you would never let your pet run loose at large. Doing so exposes them to many, many hazards including being hit by a car, attacked by other pets or predators, shot at when trespassing on other properties, poisoned by all manner of toxic things he might eat or drink, chased or tortured by kids or twisted people, pelted with rocks or BBs or whatever, exposed to ticks and fleas and other diseases, injured by crossing dangerous areas such as steep hills, broken glass, becoming permanently lost, getting picked up by Animal Control or adopted by someone else that sees him as homeless, etc. And it can also cause a lot of inconvenience for your neighbors if your pet harasses their livestock or pets, craps in their yard, barks at night, bites one of their kids or pets, etc.   Most pet owners who let their pets run loose are either ignorant of the facts above or they just don't care enough about the pets or their neighbors to do any different, and in my opinion these folks shouldn't have pets, which is why I fully support the legal capture of strays and placement in shelters where the pet will at least have a chance of being placed in a better home. Other pet owners aren't willing to go to the expense of properly tagging, chipping, and containing the pet to their properties, in which case I think they should only have inside pets that are only let out in a fenced area or on a run or leash.

  19. The rescue may not have a facility nearer to you. Most animal rescues have one building at most, and a lot depend on a network of volunteers to house animals in their homes. I doubt seriously people are running around stealing dogs to try and sell back to their owners. Most rescues I've been involved with spend far more money than they ever receive caring for animals that may never be adopted out.

  20. I have mixed feeling about this. First, I agree that ANYONE that finds a dog running around should secure the dog if possible and try and find the owner. Some dogs are very street smart and avoid traffic and are very well behaved around wild animals and such but many are not. I feel its best to secure the dog as long as it can be done safely and its not on its own property than to let it run wild and either get run over or shot due to it chasing deer or cattle. Though I would not shoot a dog for it, just not in me, I know many will if they see them running game on their property. My neighbors dogs would bug the heck out of me by running around my property while I has on my stand, even confronting me in front of my small sleep trailer sometimes. I would just chase them away since I knew where they came from but would of not thought twice about shooting one if they charged me but I never seen them chasing anything and they have since been adopted out. I would just offer a "reward" (not his fee)to the guy for his trouble and let it go at that.

  21. I also used to mainly carry a .380 - a Kel Tec P3AT - when pocket carry was the order of the day.  The thing is, I bought it brand new as a first generation but had it a few years before I got my HCP.  Once I got ready to carry, I could never get it to be reliable.  I sent it back to Kel Tec (where the customer service is awesome.)  By then the second generation was out and they pretty much built me a brand new, second gen pistol on my original frame.  It has been 100% reliable ever since and I actually shoot it pretty well but the whole experience - and reading others' experiences with various .380 pocket rockets - made me realize that even in .380 these small, lightweight pistols are riding the ragged edge for reliability and function.  That is why I would never even bother with such a small gun in 9mm.   Anyhow, I kept the P3AT but added a S&W 642.  I simply believe that - in such small packages in anything above .32acp - small, light revolvers are and likely will always be more reliable than small, light semiautos.  The 642 has become my most carried gun - usually in a pocket but sometimes OWB (as it still conceals easily.)  I replaced the factory grips with Pachmayr Compacs that cover the backstrap and give a little more to hold on to which made a world of difference it shootability and my accuracy with it.  I usually carry a speed strip in the watch pocket of my pants in case I have a need/opportunity for a reload.   The 642 has an internal hammer rather than a shrouded hammer.  That means it doesn't have the 'humpback' look of shrouded hammer versions but also means that it is DAO with no option for manually cocking the hammer.  For a revolver doing mostly pocket duty I think that is the way to go.  A model with a regular, non-shrouded hammer would be likely to snag, I would think, and I would also be concerned about the possibility of pocket lint and other debris getting into the gun through the channel that the hammer 'switch' rides in with a shrouded hammer version.  I've looked at a shrouded hammer version and think that it would be awkward to cock or decock under stress.  Besides, for up close SD you probably aren't going to be shooting in anything but double action, anyhow.   I would still advise that, if possible, you keep the little .380 around.  I find that there are occasions, although rare, where the thin/flat nature of the P3AT allows me to carry it in situations where the 642 wouldn't work as well or maybe not at all.

  23.   I've never seen this issue (and this ballot question especially) as an either or proposal.  People can be against abortion on principal, but not wanting it to be decided by anybody except the person in that situation and lest of all by legislative decree.       Sort of...5019(c)(19) is the IRS designation for a Veteran's Organization that applies or gets tax exempt status.  This would just add them to the list of who can apply to the TN General Assembly and hope for a 2/3'rds vote allowing an annual event for their benefit.  This one is really just bookkeeping that has to be done by ballot vote since it involves changing a section of the TN Constitution.  If it was in the TCA, it would be a simple legislative vote and we would never have to be bothered with it.   I'll be voting for it.

  28.   Any lower, new or used, should be marked by FFL as "other firearm" on question 18 since 8/2008. However, what an FFL puts on 4473, correctly or incorrectly, doesn't actually determine legal classification of a firearm, nor the legality of a particular future configuration of it.   The only federal requirement for legality to make a pistol is that the lower did not begin life as a rifle, either by retail manufacturer, individual, whatever.   The burden of proof to prosecute you for making a firearm from a rifle falls on the prosecution. Quite easy if you built a pistol from a used lower that left the manufacturer as a rifle. Virtually impossible if the rife were first configured by an individual gun owner who bought a new lower (unless the guy wanted to rat you out :).)   Not "once a rifle, but "first" a rifle, always a rifle. If first configured as a pistol, can be either from then on.   - OS

  30.   Succinctly put, the legislature wants to legalize the procedure they've been doing illegally for decades.  The only plus I can think of for voting Yes is it keeps out-of-state money from influencing the election of judges.  This is the like the mess that began when the U.S. 17th Amendment was ratified and took election of senators from the hands of the legislatures and put it up for popular vote.   I wouldn't want George Soros' money fueling a Tennessee Supreme Court election.

  31. Shrouded hammers seem like a great idea but they are not. Stick with the centennials which are also known as the 40/42/642/442/640/340/342/940. Titanium and scandium models hurt no matter what caliber; Airweights are not pleasant to shoot necessarily. A ~20oz model 60 is about my favorite to shoot and carry. I once had the highly demanded 640 no dash which is the best j frame ever made, but sold it to get other things. You should read this article http://www.snubnose.info/docs/m640.htm

  34. I'm also a j-frame fan. I have a 442 w/out the lock. I would highly suggest the Apex j-frame trigger kit, it's cheap and makes a world of difference in the revolver's trigger. Makes the DA pull lighter, smoother and is an easy install. My j-frame has become something I always carry like my wallet or pocket knife. In conjunction to a great carry gun it's proven a useful training tool. The use of the heavier trigger in the j-frame has translated over to improving my trigger control. I also find the j-frame fun to shoot. It loves 148gr. Wadcutters! I generally carry 135gr. +P Gold Dots in it, when I can find them.

  35. You might give the local sheriff's office where this place is located a call and feel them out as to whether they know much about the place. If there's a government employed dog catcher in the locality of the place, he might have some insight on them as well.   How much is the fee?   If it wasn't unreasonable, and I didn't otherwise smell a rat, I'd probably just pay it and get my dog back.   My dog doesn't wear a nametag, but he's somewhat a celebrity around here. I think more people know him than me.

  39. The idea that the money you contribute to SS or the unemployment system goes into an account just for you is entirely false. The money you and I are forced to pay into the system is being used to pay benefits to current recipients, and massive amounts of beuracratic overhead. The money current recipients paid in was squandered long ago, and they should've been keeping a better watch on their elected representatives at that time to fix the damage before it got to this point. The government has no business in the retirement planning industry; if for no other reason than as we can all see they're pretty terrible at it. Stealing from one to give to another is wrong, even if the recipient was at one point robbed themselves. As for it being easy to save of you're not paying taxes or scamming the system, I'm sure it is. That has nothing to do with folks who are playing by the rules but not saving money. That's nobody's fault but their own.
    1 point
  40. Of course. Any time there's uncertainty in one's life, the ideal solution is to run and suckle at the government's breast. To heck with being responsible or even self reliant, nobody can do that! Why, having some savings or a rainy day fund? Not being in debt up to your eyeballs and hanging by a financial thread? Unthinkable! No, when in doubt your first response should always be to turn to the government welfare system. It's the American way. :USA: For a lot of folks it's fun to talk about the end of the world, zombies, prepping, etc. Nobody ever talks about financial prepping, and it's a whole lot more likely most of us will face a financial problem long before a horde of zombies come charging at our homes. But who cares about that, there's unemployment, safe link wireless, section 8 housing, etc...

  41. I wanted to let everyone know which gun I chose. It was the Smith & Wesson 442. It was a tough choice. I really liked the Ruger but the 442 has a slight advantage as far as being concealable. I like the look of the stainless version but felt the darkness of the 442 was a plus for keeping it hidden. Shot 50 rounds at the gun range and was pleased with the gun .

Go slow, sometimes it doesn't take much.  Measure things as best you can and compare to the factory mags.  Sometimes you can cycle it slowly by hand and see where it's hanging up.  A particular failure mode can be indicative of a specific problem.
