To make it more acceptable how about "Terrorist Eradication and Removal Device". That way we can tell the anti's all we want to do keep our TERD's. Tell them we like taking our TERDs places as well as cleaning and polishing our TERDs. And that there is nothing more fun that letting your friends hold your TERDs. Or that there is nothing better than showing your friends your collection of TERDs. They will probably think we are nuttier than them and they will call for us to be a protected class. Americans like iPhones don't they? Why does anyone need an iPhone? Why isn't the two-piece brick cellular telephone from the 1980's still good enough for everyone? It's called progress. Technology. Evolution. Americans like the latest, the greatest, the best, the most functional. Why would we be happy with a sub-par, antiquated relic? Are we that way with any other thing that we own? Our vehicles? Our televisions? Our computers? Sure, there is always a small group of enthusiasts who like the older stuff for novelty or collecting purposes, but Americans tend to prefer the most advanced technology that has had all of the bugs worked out of it, and which works at its most optimal. Same goes for our firearms.3 points

Well, after asking what you bought lately, I decided to call Nashville Armory about the waiting list for the Shield. Miss Morgan picked up and I told her why I was calling. She said wait a minute, she would try to find out for me. And all done very plesantly I might add, because I could hear the mob in the background. After a few minutes wait, Andrew informed me I was next in line. I thanked him and said that was great. Figured I would see one in early Janusary. That was on Wednesday. On Thursday night, Andrew calls and says I have a Shield waiting for me. Joy!! Joy!! Since I really didn't feel that good; suffering with a sinusitis bout. I asked if I could pick it up Friday. Sure, he says. So Friday afternoon I'm standing in the same mob again that I heard over the phone, waiting patiently to get to a csa. It did take a while, probably 45 minutes. but I passed the time listening to the guys explain gun stuff to what appeared to be many first time buyers. One gentleman wanted to trade in his PM9 on something "bigger." Didn't get all the details because about that time I got picked out of the throng. My apologies to the young man, I'm sure I'm messing up on his name. I think it was something like Kanan? Keirnan? Anyway he goes and get the Shield 9 and I look it over. I'm completely satisfied with it. Say I have but one question...how much is it now? I'm sure it's gone up since their opening. No he says. Same price as then. Whatt?? Couldn't believe it. Not taking advantage of a hard to get item? No premium for it? And get this. Actually had a couple of mags for it. Amazing. I've been watching sites looking for mags. Just 'cause I hate only having 1 or 2 for something. Nobody has any of them. Trying not to be greedy, I only took one off the wall. Left some for the next lucky guy. Besides 3 should be enough for me. Surely. One in the pistol and 2 backups for a small cc 9. I can live with that till mags are more readily available. Anyway, fill out the form, call in, and wait for about 20 minutes for confirmation. Luckily, the good people in the check room still like me, so I walked out very happy. Very Happy. Shield 9 with 2 mags, one extra mag, tax and tic...533. Best price I'd found on the auction sites started there, plus shipping. So yes, I'm very satisfied with the experience there. My thanks to Andrew and all the staff I've met. Will heartily recommend The Nashville Armory to anyone. On...and the little Shield, no didn't fire it then. Way too big a crowd to wait. I'll get around to it after the holidays. No, I'm not crazy, I've shot one before and totally in love with it. After a few hundred rounds to get settled in, it will, I think, become my primary carry. Even looks like it will replace my PPS9. Not really any size difference in them to speak of. In fact the Shield is a hair bigger. But it fits me better, feels better, and the recoil impulse is much more comfortable than shooting the PPS. Oh, there was one downside. My wife didn't think it was very "attractive." Go figure that one. Yeah, I know...no pics, so it didn't really happen. But no gear to post with. Don't own a smart phone. Just an old dinosaur using an old flip style.2 points

The problem if or when something like this comes down is gun owners are going to be our own worst enemy. The majority are going to do exactly what the government wants without a question for fear of loosing more than their guns. Then those that didn't do what the government wants are going to be turned in by those that already have out of spite. We have already seen it with some hunters stepping back from those of us who own semiautos. I have heard it from different hunters as well as a dealer or two that a bolt action is all a person needs. There are ~300 million guns in the US and if 1/10th of those owners refused they would still be 10x the size of all the military component, active and reserve, of the US. And another thought is this there is no way the government could house and provide for 30 million "criminals". And for those who think it is not possible look at the Afghans in the 80's. They used pitchforks, flintlocks and Lee enfield rifles to defeat one of the super powers. But the only way people are going to stand up is if they think they are going to win. Dolomite2 points

I think it would be more correct to say that "driving" a motor vehicle is a privilege; I don't believe that using the roadway is a privilege. We may not have the right to drive but I think it can be argued that we do have the right to travel freely and without undue restrictions from one place to another and since roads are (almost always) paid for by taxes I think the government would have a difficult time saying you can't use them at all. ;)2 points
-
They would probably think their are consequences for breaking the law. Don't want to be arrested and have your blood drawn then don't break the law. Driving on public roadways is not a right it is a priviledge. And that priviledge can be taken away. Dolomite2 points

Unfortunately, if someone tried to "shoot any man who take their guns away".... that would be all our government needs to invoke even more draconian anti-gun, anti-self defense controls. Just one or two of those shootings, and the public would support such additional regulations, too! I fear that our nation is populated by a totally new demographic.... dependent upon government and happy with that.2 points

Before I begin, I already saw that 2 or more other postings with different post titles were started on this subject. No disrespect against those posts, I just thought the titles were not too catchy or have a certain dialoge all of their own. To me, this is a very historic speech about something I feel very passionate about, so I thought it deserved a more newsworthy title, and maybe a differnt tone of its own. So mods. use your own judgment if you want to kill my version (no hurt feelings). I heard the speech live from work, and I was very impressed. I even downloaded the speech to re-read, and re-read again, to study and form my own opinion. In my view, for meaningful action that would have traction, their proposal is the only one that would work. Below are two versions, the cliff notes version through my prisim, and then the speech unedited: Cliff Notes Version: How do we protect our children right now, starting today, in a way that we know works? We care about the President, so we protect him with armed Secret Service agents. Members of Congress work in offices surrounded by armed Capitol Police officers. The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. But since when did the word "gun" automatically become a bad word? A gun in the hands of a Secret Service agent protecting the President isn't a bad word. A gun in the hands of a soldier protecting the United States isn't a bad word. The NRA is going to bring all of its knowledge, dedication and resources to develop a model National School Shield Emergency Response Program for every school that wants it. If we truly cherish our kids more than our money or our celebrities, we must give them the greatest level of protection possible and the security that is only available with a properly trained — armed — good guy. That's a plan of action that can, and will, make a real, positive and indisputable difference in the safety of our children — starting right now. The Long Version: NRA PRESS CONFERENCE 12/21/2012 The National Rifle Association's 4 million mothers, fathers, sons and daughters join the nation in horror, outrage, grief and earnest prayer for the families of Newtown, Connecticut ... who suffered such incomprehensible loss as a result of this unspeakable crime. Out of respect for those grieving families, and until the facts are known, the NRA has refrained from comment. While some have tried to exploit tragedy for political gain, we have remained respectfully silent. Now, we must speak ... for the safety of our nation's children. Because for all the noise and anger directed at us over the past week, no one — nobody — has addressed the most important, pressing and immediate question we face: How do we protect our children right now, starting today, in a way that we know works? The only way to answer that question is to face up to the truth. Politicians pass laws for Gun-Free School Zones. They issue press releases bragging about them. They post signs advertising them. And in so doing, they tell every insane killer in America that schools are their safest place to inflict maximum mayhem with minimum risk. How have our nation's priorities gotten so far out of order? Think about it. We care about our money, so we protect our banks with armed guards. American airports, office buildings, power plants, courthouses — even sports stadiums — are all protected by armed security. We care about the President, so we protect him with armed Secret Service agents. Members of Congress work in offices surrounded by armed Capitol Police officers. Yet when it comes to the most beloved, innocent and vulnerable members of the American family — our children — we as a society leave them utterly defenseless, and the monsters and predators of this world know it and exploit it. That must change now! The truth is that our society is populated by an unknown number of genuine monsters — people so deranged, so evil, so possessed by voices and driven by demons that no sane person can possibly ever comprehend them. They walk among us every day. And does anybody really believe that the next Adam Lanza isn't planning his attack on a school he's already identified at this very moment? How many more copycats are waiting in the wings for their moment of fame — from a national media machine that rewards them with the wall-to-wall attention and sense of identity that they crave — while provoking others to try to make their mark? A dozen more killers? A hundred? More? How can we possibly even guess how many, given our nation's refusal to create an active national database of the mentally ill? And the fact is, that wouldn't even begin to address the much larger and more lethal criminal class: Killers, robbers, rapists and drug gang members who have spread like cancer in every community in this country. Meanwhile, federal gun prosecutions have decreased by 40% — to the lowest levels in a decade. So now, due to a declining willingness to prosecute dangerous criminals, violent crime is increasing again for the first time in 19 years! Add another hurricane, terrorist attack or some other natural or man-made disaster, and you've got a recipe for a national nightmare of violence and victimization. And here's another dirty little truth that the media try their best to conceal: There exists in this country a callous, corrupt and corrupting shadow industry that sells, and sows, violence against its own people. Through vicious, violent video games with names like Bulletstorm, Grand Theft Auto, Mortal Kombat and Splatterhouse. And here's one: it's called Kindergarten Killers. It's been online for 10 years. How come my research department could find it and all of yours either couldn't or didn't want anyone to know you had found it? Then there's the blood-soaked slasher films like "American Psycho" and "Natural Born Killers" that are aired like propaganda loops on "Splatterdays" and every day, and a thousand music videos that portray life as a joke and murder as a way of life. And then they have the nerve to call it "entertainment." But is that what it really is? Isn't fantasizing about killing people as a way to get your kicks really the filthiest form of pornography? In a race to the bottom, media conglomerates compete with one another to shock, violate and offend every standard of civilized society by bringing an ever-more-toxic mix of reckless behavior and criminal cruelty into our homes — every minute of every day of every month of every year. A child growing up in America witnesses 16,000 murders and 200,000 acts of violence by the time he or she reaches the ripe old age of 18. And throughout it all, too many in our national media ... their corporate owners ... and their stockholders ... act as silent enablers, if not complicit co-conspirators. Rather than face their own moral failings, the media demonize lawful gun owners, amplify their cries for more laws and fill the national debate with misinformation and dishonest thinking that only delay meaningful action and all but guarantee that the next atrocity is only a news cycle away. The media call semi-automatic firearms "machine guns" — they claim these civilian semi-automatic firearms are used by the military, and they tell us that the .223 round is one of the most powerful rifle calibers ... when all of these claims are factually untrue. They don't know what they're talking about! Worse, they perpetuate the dangerous notion that one more gun ban — or one more law imposed on peaceful, lawful people — will protect us where 20,000 others have failed! As brave, heroic and self-sacrificing as those teachers were in those classrooms, and as prompt, professional and well-trained as those police were when they responded, they were unable — through no fault of their own — to stop it. As parents, we do everything we can to keep our children safe. It is now time for us to assume responsibility for their safety at school. The only way to stop a monster from killing our kids is to be personally involved and invested in a plan of absolute protection. The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. Would you rather have your 911 call bring a good guy with a gun from a mile away ... or a minute away? Now, I can imagine the shocking headlines you'll print tomorrow morning: "More guns," you'll claim, "are the NRA's answer to everything!" Your implication will be that guns are evil and have no place in society, much less in our schools. But since when did the word "gun" automatically become a bad word? A gun in the hands of a Secret Service agent protecting the President isn't a bad word. A gun in the hands of a soldier protecting the United States isn't a bad word. And when you hear the glass breaking in your living room at 3 a.m. and call 911, you won't be able to pray hard enough for a gun in the hands of a good guy to get there fast enough to protect you. So why is the idea of a gun good when it's used to protect our President or our country or our police, but bad when it's used to protect our children in their schools? They're our kids. They're our responsibility. And it's not just our duty to protect them — it's our right to protect them. You know, five years ago, after the Virginia Tech tragedy, when I said we should put armed security in every school, the media called me crazy. But what if, when Adam Lanza started shooting his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School last Friday, he had been confronted by qualified, armed security? Will you at least admit it's possible that 26 innocent lives might have been spared? Is that so abhorrent to you that you would rather continue to risk the alternative? Is the press and political class here in Washington so consumed by fear and hatred of the NRA and America's gun owners that you're willing to accept a world where real resistance to evil monsters is a lone, unarmed school principal left to surrender her life to shield the children in her care? No one — regardless of personal political prejudice — has the right to impose that sacrifice. Ladies and gentlemen, there is no national, one-size-fits-all solution to protecting our children. But do know this President zeroed out school emergency planning grants in last year's budget, and scrapped "Secure Our Schools" policing grants in next year's budget. With all the foreign aid, with all the money in the federal budget, we can't afford to put a police officer in every school? Even if they did that, politicians have no business — and no authority — denying us the right, the ability, or the moral imperative to protect ourselves and our loved ones from harm. Now, the National Rifle Association knows that there are millions of qualified active and retired police; active, reserve and retired military; security professionals; certified firefighters and rescue personnel; and an extraordinary corps of patriotic, trained qualified citizens to join with local school officials and police in devising a protection plan for every school. We can deploy them to protect our kids now. We can immediately make America's schools safer — relying on the brave men and women of America's police force. The budget of our local police departments are strained and resources are limited, but their dedication and courage are second to none and they can be deployed right now. I call on Congress today to act immediately, to appropriate whatever is necessary to put armed police officers in every school — and to do it now, to make sure that blanket of safety is in place when our children return to school in January. Before Congress reconvenes, before we engage in any lengthy debate over legislation, regulation or anything else, as soon as our kids return to school after the holiday break, we need to have every single school in America immediately deploy a protection program proven to work — and by that I mean armed security. Right now, today, every school in the United States should plan meetings with parents, school administrators, teachers and local authorities — and draw upon every resource available — to erect a cordon of protection around our kids right now. Every school will have a different solution based on its own unique situation. Every school in America needs to immediately identify, dedicate and deploy the resources necessary to put these security forces in place right now. And the National Rifle Association, as America's preeminent trainer of law enforcement and security personnel for the past 50 years, is ready, willing and uniquely qualified to help. Our training programs are the most advanced in the world. That expertise must be brought to bear to protect our schools and our children now. We did it for the nation's defense industries and military installations during World War II, and we'll do it for our schools today. The NRA is going to bring all of its knowledge, dedication and resources to develop a model National School Shield Emergency Response Program for every school that wants it. From armed security to building design and access control to information technology to student and teacher training, this multi-faceted program will be developed by the very best experts in their fields. Former Congressman Asa Hutchinson will lead this effort as National Director of the National School Shield Program, with a budget provided by the NRA of whatever scope the task requires. His experience as a U.S. Attorney, Director of the Drug Enforcement Agency and Undersecretary of the Department of Homeland Security will give him the knowledge and expertise to hire the most knowledgeable and credentialed experts available anywhere, to get this program up and running from the first day forward. If we truly cherish our kids more than our money or our celebrities, we must give them the greatest level of protection possible and the security that is only available with a properly trained — armed — good guy. Under Asa's leadership, our team of security experts will make this the best program in the world for protecting our children at school, and we will make that program available to every school in America free of charge. That's a plan of action that can, and will, make a real, positive and indisputable difference in the safety of our children — starting right now. There'll be time for talk and debate later. This is the time, this is the day for decisive action. We can't wait for the next unspeakable crime to happen before we act. We can't lose precious time debating legislation that won't work. We mustn't allow politics or personal prejudice to divide us. We must act now. For the sake of the safety of every child in America, I call on every parent, every teacher, every school administrator and every law enforcement officer in this country to join us in the National School Shield Program and protect our children with the only line of positive defense that's tested and proven to work. Do I understand you correctly? Are you really proposing to throw those who own guns classified as, and regulated under the NFA under the bus to draw attention away from your own? It's that same bullshit attitude by people like Bill Ruger that helped the AWB get passed the first time. The thinking that "well, we will let them hammer/ban XYZ, and that won't affect me and my guns" is a very slippery slope. Give the Feds an inch, and they will take a mile. Let a AWB bill gain momentum, and even if version 2.0 doesn't take away YOUR guns this time, the 3.0 version may. If you are any sort of pro-2A/Pro-"ITS MY RIGHT TO OWN GUNS" supporter, you would see that throwing ANY of our kind to the wolves in attempt to save your own ass (guns) is shady and dishonorable at best.1 point

Under 5A seems they could take your AR as a result of due process of law easier than could make a case for mandatory sale, as this would need to be private property taken for public use. Maybe they could trump it up if they claimed they were giving them all to the military or something, or melt them down for bridges. But I doubt that. However, let's not put the cart in front of the horse: the AWB of '94 only passed the House by two votes, and an in overwhelming Dem controlled House at that. But like you, I find it quite unnerving, mainly because these times seem unprecedented in so many ways. - OS1 point

I really see this as a family and community problem as opposed to a government problem. Like Hurricane Katrina, there are times when we expect way too much of our government (and they are complicit in gladly taking on the role of sugar daddy.) Our society has this nice shellac of modernity and sophistication, but at our core, we are as broken as we've ever been. In fact, with our modern disregard for things like personal responsibility and the public embracing acceptance of any position under the stars, we may have set ourselves up for an even harder fall. When you strip away that outer veneer, you see quickly that we're not really at all as sophisticated as we thought. The things that we think are important really show themselves to be worthless. The media and entertainment companies are producing exactly what the public wants and demands. You're not going to legislate away brokeness. As long as there is a demand for violent, hyper-sexualized content, there are plenty of people and companies willing to produce and provide exactly that. And, they will always continue to push the boundaries just a little bit further. But like the failure we saw in Hurricane Katrina, we blamed the wrong group. This wasn't a government failure, because it wasn't something the governement could reasonably fix. It was a family and community failure. When you don't care about anything more than yourself, it shouldn't surprise you when no one around you does either. We're asking the government to do something which they cannot do. You cannot legislate brokeness. There is certainly something I can do, though. I can be involved with my family and community. I can care about my neighbor. I can monitor what games my kids play and what movies they watch, just as I should really regulate what I play and what I watch. I can surround my family with people who support those same values in their families. I'm not going to act surprised when media companies act according to Adam Smith's laws and provide content for which there is an audience. Hopefully they'll not be surprised when I fail to partake of it. None of my three children are old enough to shoot, yet. But, two of the three already know what not to do with a gun. I don't expect someone else to teach them this. That's my job. Maybe it's my libertarian roots showing through. Maybe it's my belief that the governement is incapable of creating value. Maybe it's something I've not even thought of yet. But, I don't expect the government to keep me safe from all harm and provide for every need that I have. But I do expect it stay out of the way while I do it.1 point

I work in the entertainment industry, so if I may... Anyone who thinks media doesn't influence them is a fool. The advertising industry spends almost $300 BILLION dollars annually because it WORKS. I know everyone wants to believe it only affects others, but media has an effect on all of us. Now I'm not saying that someone playing violent games or watching violent movies is instantly more prone to violence, but to argue that our society as a whole - which glorifies violence - is somehow immune to the influence of media, when study after study has shown that advertising absolutely affects people, is simply denial. To what degree it influences us as individuals is up for debate, but we're all affected in some way.1 point
-
I place a lot of the blame on the media and the way they make these murderers famous. Thats what they are after! They want to be remembered for something even if it is for something horrible! Treat them like a rape victim and never mention their names. A year from now most of us will not remember the names of the victims but the name of the shooter will be there. Take the OK City bombing. Everyone remembers Timothy McVeigh but try to name a single victim without using Google. I also place some blame on the video games and movies but by themselves don't cause people to snap. I believe that some can't mentally handle the violence of these and those are the ones that need to be identified. The problem is that parents don't spend mear as much quality time with children these days and there are many more single parent homes that are struggling to get by further limiting that time. No parent wants to think that their child could possibly do anything like this but everytime it happens the one doing the shooting is someones child! Whats the answer? I don't know. This is my opinion of where the blame falls and it's not the guns. McVeigh didn't use a gun but achieved a much bigger result than shooters.1 point

This isn't 1994, some in the population will see this as a violation of our 2nd Amendment rights, and more death will result from an AWB being passed. Many can barely stand what is going on today, any move to disarm otherwise law abiding citizens will be seen as a move too far by the federal government. Most on this forum think TN's relatively relaxed firearm laws are a violation on our God given rights already. There is a reason why almost every police department in this country uses these types of firearms, they are an effective tool in protecting the officers, that therefore means they are a valuable tool for citizens protecting themselves, as such any ban on new (let alone a ban on current owned) firearms, magazines, or ammo would be a clear violation of our God given freedoms, and would remove the legitimacy of any government passing or enforcing those laws. If our government breaks the social contract, then freemen (and women) are no longer bound by that social contract to allow tyrants to stay in power, any force is then reasonable to remove said tyrants from power.1 point

They will tell you to do what you need to to protect your livestock. Then hang up the phone, step outside and shoot every single dog on your property. Then go back in and call LE. Tell them you have shot the dogs harassing your livestock and that you need an officer to come out. Then both of you go to the neighbors and have them remove their dead dog from your property. People who let their dogs roam free and harrass or kill others animals should be held accountable. I have shot at dogs that harrassed and killed our animals. I will do it again to protect what is mine. Dolomite1 point

"Confidential information"? Hmm... I'll wait for legitimate speculation as opposed to "I bet he does it because I think he's a big fat meany".1 point
