  2. The cliff notes from my little write up here: - Don't give up on a gun. It can be adjusted. - Don't be afraid to take things apart. - Always thoroughly clean your gun. - Always test your magazines with each gun. First off let me say I'm not a gunsmith but I'm not afraid to take things apart. Being an engineer I think I have quite a knack for understanding how things work. And as a long time shooter, I know how much crud can accumulate in the cracks and crevices of our guns. So I've always been quite OCD about cleaning my guns after every trip to the range or competition. With that said, I had one that was stumping me. I picked up a Para Black Ops 1911 from a fellow TGO'er earlier this year and love the feel of this gun. It's definitely in the keeper pile. I took it to the range a few times and loved how it shot. Being a "match grade" pistol it performed as it should. Tight tolerances proved tight groups. Fast forward a few months and I decide to make the change from shooting IDPA ESP to IDPA CDP, and the gun to do it would be the Para. That's when things started going downhill. From the start I was plagued with failure to feed (FTF) issues. I was stumped. I never had this issues on the previous range trips. So I went back to review the videos and I didn't see any limp-wristing. Well after a few matches, and yesterday's match in particular, I'd had enough. After three stages I declared a bad gun and used my Sig 1911 for the final two stages without a hiccup. Hmm, doesn't seem like it's me causing the issue. The overall problem I experience is a FTF where the live round is jammed with the base of the bullet barely in the extractor and the bullet jammed into the top of the battery. I changed mags, changed ammo, and thought about shooting upside down, but nothing made a difference. This was happening on the first round, last round, and everything in between. - Note, not my photo. When I got home I visually compared the Para against the Sig. Obviously these two pistols are quite unique in their own ways. But I looked at dimensions, how it feeds on the barrel ramp (Para) vs frame ramp (Sig), and how the extractor and ejectors worked. All about the same but one thing I did notice was the extractor tension was noticeably more on the Para than the Sig. The Sig was "loose". I was scouring the net last night and I looked up extractor tuning, finding all kinds of things. The biggest take away was extractors should be removed and checked every 500-700 rounds for tension and dirt. Several places also talked about extractor tension; if your extractor is too loose you will experience stove pipes and if the extractor is too tight you will experience failure to feed. Ahh, a light goes off. If my extractor is too tight, when the bullet is released from the magazine it can't slide up under the extractor far enough, and by the time it hits the ramp, the nose of the bullet jams into the top of the battery. The next step was to perform some simple shake tests and then remove the extractor to adjust. When using an empty case, the extractor definitely held the case tight, and when moving the case to the lower point of the slide to simulate initial feeding, I couldn't shake the case out. The tests show you should be able to do this. So the extractor must be too tight. I also did the same test with the Sig and it dropped the loose round at the bottom test as it should. Not knowing much about the Para, I set out to remove the extractor. That was easy enough, just like every other 1911, but rather than extracting your typical flat spring type ejector, out comes this crazy looking contraption with a spring, tube, and hinged extractor. A little research and this is known as the Para Power Extractor. New to me. Anyways, there is obviously no way to adjust the tension on this thing. However, I started to inspect and wipe it down and there must have been a pound of crud all over the extractor unit as a whole, and lots of junk in the claw. I cleaned it well, reassembled the slide, and started my feed tests again. I filled a magazine, and very safely began racking. I would quickly pull the slide all the way back and release it to simulate, as best I could, an actual power stroke. Immediately I could tell a difference. For one it didn't fail. I fed an entire magazine through with no failures. I did this test three or four times and not once did I have a failure. So then on the next few magazines I performed the cycle slowly so I could watch the round feed from the magazine into battery. Smooth as silk. I couldn't believe it. Every time I would do this test prior to cleaning it would jam. I mean every time. While I was excited about the results, my tests didn't stop there. If I'm going to use this for competition I knew I needed to test my magazines. During all of my prior tests I was using a Sig magazine that had been working the "best" with the the Para. Wilson magazines performed horribly. So I began testing the Wilson mags in the same fashion as the Sig mag. To make a long story a bit shorter, fast or slow cycle, the 8rd Wilson magazines would feed fine until the last round. The last round would ALWAYS jam in the same way it had before. The spring tension, follower, or release point or something is different once it gets to the last round. It is important to note the 7rd Wilson magazine does not have this problem. To wrap up, I still have to get the Para back out to the range to put everything to the test. But I'm feeling quite a bit more confident in putting this gun back into my competition bag. Moral of the story, always be religious about cleaning your gun down to the smallest crack, check your magazines, and don't give up.

  6. I was moving some things around in my work bag and needed a way to hold some of my tools in one place so they wouldn't rattle around or get eaten by the bag so I made this. It's a piece of kydex with holes in a one inch grid and some flat elastic band from the craft store to hold everything down. 9. As well as being a loser. The reason why some of these kids have the problems they do is the parents do not prepare their kids for failure. Then when that 14, 15, 16 or 17 year old fails for the first time they loose it and either hurt themselves or others. Every child should be allowed to fail, even at an extremely early age. The more accustomed with failure the better they will cope with it later in life. As well as the fact no one can demand respect. The only way to get respect is to earn it. A lot of problems today is people think they are entitled to, and demand, respect but it is not an entitlement and cannot be demanded.

It's total horse sh!t. they're fortunate WWII vets are elderly. But Vietnam vets are not nearly as old and have been disrespected since they were there. closing these memorials may be the breaking point.

  13. As far as I'm concerned it can stay shutdown until the next election.  Won't happen but what will happen is that the longer it goes the more we'll see just how petty big O and the democrats can be. Barricading parking lots of private tourist attractions, blockading open air attractions on DC, removing pump handles from water supplies along a bike route... on and on and on. Eventually all this will mount as the BS it is. Had mr. O crafted and submitted a budget to start with this would probably be completely different, but he didn't and the more it drags out the better.   The other thing that irritates the crap out of me is when everyone decries that the ACA was passed through congress fair and square. Well, I guess you can call it that, but if I remember correctly it was passed on Christmas eve near midnight or some other such shenanigan. --- same way the Federal Reserve system was pushed through congress in 1913 or whenever it was. They do this crap under the cover of darkness and when they think the fewest people will be watching. They are all a bunch of cockroaches and deserve more than just being voted out of their positions of tyranny, tar and feathers would be more appropriate.

  14. Well, I'm back at it. I've had my boat since I left the Army. Was a gift from my dad. Spent 3 months rebuilding the outside and working my butt off to make her run like new. About a year after I finished it I noticed the floor was getting rotten and the wood was giving me some issues. Well, I figured once I had spare time I'd build the floors and completely remodel it. And, that time has come. Little history of this boat. It's a 1972 Winner Viscount 21'. It's been in my family since day one. In 1979 to 1980 my dad took a chainsaw to the rear and made it an inboard and dropped a 350 chevy engine in her. In 2007 or 2008 it sank while I was deployed. My dad gave it to me as a 20th birthday present and rebuilt it while I was on my first deployment. Thats when I came home and repainted it and made her perfect. Or so I thought... Anyways, I'm pretty much home for good from working in Afghanistan. Trying to have a baby now and I kinda need to be home for that... Mail man can't have all the fun, right? So, last minute whim I said to the wife, lets drive to Minnesota (where I am from and my family lives still) and get my boat. We left Tuesday, and got home thursday. 13.5 hours up, 16 hours back. Lot slower towing this thing... Worst part, 20 MPG up, 9.6 MPG back. Yeah, I miss my diesel, and couldn't stop thinking about how much I wish I still had it driving home. Haha. This thing sat for 2 years since I moved down here, and had some bad water damage that warped the side panels and front panels to the cabin so it was inevitable I had to do at least a little work on it. So, Couldn't start working on it friday. It was the wife's birthday so I had to wait tell today. Thankfully I have some amazing neighbors who came over to help. I couldn't have tore up as much in one day if it wasn't for them. I do wish I took a picture before we started. But I might be able to find an old one of it. Carpet and wood work is gone. At least I put a new gas tank in it in 2009, right? HA. The old aluminum one had flaking particles clogging my gas line, so I figured a new plastic one would be much better for the long run. Vroom, Vroom. Bad wood where the passenger seat was. This little spot made me want to do the entire boat. And I'm sure glad I did after taking the floor up today! Found an uninvited guests home. No idea how old that is... Floors are all pealed up, we left them there for something to walk on. Rotten screws and nails holding them down with fiberglass over top so we didnt know where they where, so, little pri-bar then a saw zaw and good teamwork, done and done. I'll keep posting pictures as I go and see what I can come up with for old ones of the inside to give you an idea of before and after.

  15. I couldn't find the info on how that breaks down by county. Because I bet if you eliminated Shelby county, TN would drop towards the bottom. It's just like Cook County giving IL a bad name. Get outside that county and IL is a nice place to live. Or NY, or CA, etc.

I can't say for sure that they won't be successful in getting this ratified. I wouldn't believe they could, but then again I would've never believed we would be here as a nation either. I do my part, I write and call my representatives. I support conservatives at every turn with all my means. I'm just worn out from the constant attack on my civil liberties. I honestly don't know how much longer there will be a peaceful option to keep our rights.

  32. I was having flashbacks today from last bow season Batman. This morning wasn't "hot" but muggy/sticky, then about noon, it started getting rough. If I'd killed something, it would have made it worth it. But since I didn't, "WHEW!". I'm not gonna complain too much, "A day in the woods is...." comes to mind, so I'll just say that I hope it's cooler in the morning. Since that rain is moving in noonish, maybe it will feel better out there.

  34. I know that I may be in the minority, I simply do not sell or trade guns.  In my opinion, the risk is too great.  I use to be FFL dealer 20 years ago, and was very familiar with the laws and risks long before the internet.  Though its not against the law to sell or trade occasionally, the burden if its a legal sell/trade is you the owner.  You can ask the questions, you can have the bill of sale, all of which is subject to heavy scrutiny if one of your guns come back on you, and after several thousands of dollars to retain an attorney, go through the spill, you will likely win, but was it worth the $50-$100 you made on the sale or flip, or the $500 of gun trade for that gun you wanted, and either you were to cheap to buy it out right, or just didn't have the money to begin with.  It just is not worth it. Again, I know I am in the minority.  This stance by me has not stopped my indulging in guns, its one of the reasons that I have amassed a good kitty.  One side benefit is that I do not fit in that category of the one gun I loved once that I traded away.

Generally speaking, criminals don't have a death wish. They will resort to flight mode when met with equal or superior violence 99% of the time.

  41. I carried a P90 and an extra mag for years. Now I carry M&P .40 with three 15 round mags and one in the chamber and still feel like I'm short. If I wasn't worried about leaving my AR in the truck overnight, I'd love to have it in there also. I just hate carrying it out everyday with nosey neighbors, yeah it's in a case, but until I get a guitar case like in The Mexican, it looks like a gun case. What's sad, is so many people would be just like the family in the suv, no way to protect themselves, and I'm mad because I only have 46 rounds at all times along with a 100 round box of ammo in the console. I carry this every day in and out of the car, all day long except while inside at work. I guess most are happy to lay down and be a victim, not me.....well and most of y'all on TGO as well.

  44. If anything, our support for Israel should simply be because its the right thing to do. They've been invaded multiple times by their neighbors and one state in the region seeks to wipe them from the earth. They remain one of the few allies we can keep from being invaded again without ever worrying about committing troops. However, if we turned our back on Israel tomorrow, they would not last long. Unlike countries such as Kuwait, Israel doesn't expect us to do the fighting for them; they just need someone in their corner. To abandon them would be dishonorable, in my opinion. A more simple reason is that very evil people want to destroy Israel. We should not stand by and let evil terrorize the free world, especially when we expected, and got, so much support from the international community after 9/11.

  48. Interesting to me as more governments join and/or ratify this treaty- knowing that the government-to-government back-door arms trades have always been "outside the law",  this law can only serve to widen the power-gap between governments and the citizens those governments should be serving.   Ominous.   Let me also say, that I am absolutely for.. for... for compassion - for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all members of the human race.  It breaks my heart to see people in pain from violence - no matter who they are or where they are.  I want kids, women, and men to be safe in all countries, BUT... effectual stability, safety, and security (and root morality) will always be a local cultural issue - it has never been governmental and will never be.  Governments (the systems, not the individuals) are designed to rule... and if left unchecked, the system will work to bring every experience under that rule.     Intersting about the United Nations... it generally lacks oomph to effectively adjudicate and regulate government entities that offend, so it has resorted to encouraging governments (many of whom are not egregious offenders) to regulate their own citizens.     I don't buy into sinister conspiricy theories; I simply think the systems are functioning as they were designed - what are missing are effective checks and balances.   The world  - through increased population and technology is increasing in complexity.  (IT & programmers, check me on this) Whenever you increase the complexity of a system, you have to increase the structure (rules) to maintain stability and functionality.   Not to over-bibliocize this - but in wisdom literature, you can look to the Christian Scriptures:  Israel asked for a King - their God said, "You don't know what you are asking; trust me when I say, you don't want a King."  Israel essentially demanded, "Yes, give us a King!!"  - Israel got their kings and -through good and bad kings, Israel paid the price for giving their collective representation over to a King.      In societies' desire for safety and security, masses of people are asking for a King - more rule of law - to keep them safe.  Many of us are responding... "You don't know what you are asking; trust me when I say, you do not want a King."    Orwell much anyone?
