  2. You should just pay for a benefactor membership here and sell it in the classifieds.  Virtually no worries about getting screwed over as the folks here are monitored and generally great folks to deal with.  Plus you are supporting the forum.  Well worth the money.

  4. I mean a lot.... A whole lot....    Sorry, i've been away so long. Just the Girlfriend and the issues of selling a house have taken my mind away from being on this site as much as I would have liked.   I finally sold my house back in the second week of March. Was sad to see it go but it had to happen. Didn't get what i was asking, but i didn't break even either or go in the hole on the sale, so I'm ok.   And it will be 2 weeks this coming saturday that i'm officially engaged to the love of my life.( going to be a while to get used to going from calling her the "girlfriend" to the "fiancee".  Great thing is, she already has her HCP and i took her out to shoot my AR last weekend( she loves it). I don't know if it is a good thing or a bad thing though.   So a lot has happened, wedding date isn't set yet, but it will be sometime summer of 2015.

  6.   A lot of 'charities' take subsidies from the government. Guess where the government gets the money for those subsidies? That's right, us!    The problem I have with that is that I don't have a choice as to how much I give or where it goes. In my perfect world, the government would hand out zero subsidies and I could keep my money to give as I see fit. That's how it should be. Taking taxpayer money just to redistribute it, in my mind, leaves less money in the hands of citizens who could and would otherwise use it for good things, like stimulating the economy or giving to charities.   Plus, if the charities knew they had to work harder to get citizen's money instead of from the government, maybe they would use it more efficiently.

  8.   And why does legally owning and carrying firearms automatically turn us into bloodthirsty vigilantes, to hear the media tell it, but people who are illegally carrying firearms and using them in criminal activities are often presented as 'good kids who wouldn't hurt a fly' and 'victims of circumstance'?  My favorite is, "He just fell in with the wrong people."  Well, all the other folks in his group would probably say the same thing - meaning sooner or later some of them didn't 'fall in' with the wrong people but, instead, are the 'wrong people'.  To me, someone who walks into a restaurant and points a gun at the customers and staff without provocation is one of the 'wrong people' no matter how deep his family shoves their heads in the sand in claiming he was a 'good boy.'       Sure, your family might see your best behavior while your friends and peers see your worst.  Still, I would warrant that there are few among us whose 'worst' behavior meant armed robbery and the like.  Maybe some stupid pranks or even some mildly delinquent behavior, sure, but threatening strangers with a firearm and armed robbery go a ways beyond 'youthful indescretion'.  Even if the family really had no idea that the teen would be capable of such a thing, the very fact that he was committing this crime in the first place should be enough to illustrate for the family that their perspective of the kid was not the truth.  This incident, alone, should illustrate for them that he wasn't the 'good boy' they thought he was.   Of course, the family isn't willing to admit that he might not be the perfect, little gentleman they claim:       I hate statements like that.  Putting your underwear on backward by mistake is a 'mistake'.  Mistakenly picking up the wrong set of keys on your way out the door is a 'mistake'.  Walking out of a restaurant without paying because you really, truly (but mistakenly) forgot that you hadn't already paid is a mistake.  Walking into a business with an illegally possessed, loaded firearm, terrorizing the staff and customers and attempting to commit armed robbery is not a damn mistake.  You don't mistakenly walk into a restaurant waving a gun around and threatening people.  The only 'mistake' he made was in the victim selection process.  There is no, "Oops - where did this gun come from?  I didn't mean for all you folks to be down on the floor," here.  He did it on purpose and he died for it.  No further details (or CCW training) needed.

  11. My condolences to the family, but they need to get their heads out of their asses. This is above and beyond "out of character behavior". It would be "out of character" for me to show up at work tomorrow hungover. When you engage in life threatening behavior you can't cry foul when your life is threatened in response. Trying to make someone pay financially for justifiably defending themselves is just nothing more than opportunistic greed. If they really wanted to make a positive difference in the community they should focus on why "a good 'respectful' kid" would resort to armed robbery and not on disarming the people said kid is terrorizing.

  17. One of my grand sons got busted for possession of drugs for Resale 3 weeks ago. He called me to see about getting him an attorney and a bondsman to get him out of jail. He got out of jail after he went up in front of the judge and the judge appointed him a  public defender. I found out he called his father first and his father(my Son) told him the same thing I did. I have spoke with his public defender and the judge in the county because i know them both. This his first arrest and I asked the judge and public defender to negotiate a plea bargain that will keep him out of jail but sentence him to 5 to 10 years and put him on a ten year probation and make it very clear to him that if he even sneezes and breaks a law he does the 5 to 10 for Probation violation. His father and I both told him he was hanging with the wrong people and it went in one ear and out the other. The judge is also going to inform him that he can violate if he is caught up in any crime that he could be guilty by association which would violate his probation. If his father and I cannot keep hm from associating with trash maybe the judge can. I have a policy I live by and have for most of my adult life and that is,  " No mercy for self inflicted injuries" and by not learning by your mistakes and repeating them is self inflicted.............jmho

  19. We were all teens once, and I have raised three teens of my own. I can assure that my family got my best behavior and my friends knew the worst of me. Had I gotten into trouble or killed for the things that my family knew nothing about, they would have said the same things about me. "Those actions were out of character for sweet, angelic, God fearing and hard working student LINKS2K", and from their perspective, they would have been telling the truth. I'm fortunate to have lived several decades beyond the ignorance of my youth. I am also glad that I recognize that good families can produce bad kids. The family didn't plan the robbery. The young man got what he paid for.

  22. If you have any reason to believe someone is already in your house (in which case you failed to have adequate security measures in place), you immediately get yourself and any loved ones to the safest place possible (such as a barricaded locked room behind proper cover), and then arm any adults that are properly trained / equipped, and then call 911. Inform them of your address, describe the situation (including location / description of all family members, and who is armed), and you wait on the phone while guarding your safe room entrance(s). You don't go searching the house looking for trouble, and you don't leave family members unprotected. You also don't go outside or move through the house unless you can establish it is safe to do so, as additional or unknown threats may be waiting. If a threat emerges or advances near your safe room, you call out loudly that you are armed and will shoot to defend yourself if needed, ordering them to leave immediately, and that police are on the way. If the threat persists or escalates then you do only what is necessary to defend your lives, not to protect property or chase them out or advance on them or capture them.

  23. I stopped in the Murfreesboro Walmart on Old Fort tonight and stopped by sporting goods to renew my son's fishing license and there sat about 40-50 50 round boxes of Federal .22. Normal price of $2.47.   The surprising thing was that there was only 1 other guy there interested in it. He got his limit of 3, I bought 3 and no one else seemed interested in 50 round boxes, although 1 guy did ask if he had any of the bulk boxes but passed on the 50 rounders. Guess they're harder to turn a profit on.

  28. So, wound up with a couple of new WASRs in last couple months. As most probably know they come with unfinished stocks, quite light in color. However, current series, at least my two (through Bud's and PSA, a month apart) did not have the plywood laminate butt stock, but solid wood ones, no pins through them or anything. Birch probably, but just guessing -- pretty nice looking though. I know, they're "just cheap AKs", but thought I should at least do something to the wood to seal it against moisture a bit at the least, so took all the furniture off, didn't do anything to existing wood 'cept rub all over with 0000 steel wool and rub down with alcohol. At any rate, left the first one in it's natural light color, thought tung oil would be nifty, but after reading up on it, actually takes months to do a true tung oil finish correctly, so cheated and used Formby's Tung Oil finish, 5 or 6 coats over 4 days.Perhaps made it just a touch more "golden" in tint, not sure. Put it on all surfaces, inside and out, even the hole through hand guard for the cleaning rod. Finished off with a couple of rounds of Kiwi Neutral paste shoe polish. Yeah, I guess the butt pad will leave a different ring on it as it ages, oh well. So the second one, thought maybe I'd actually make it a reddish tint, even picked up a used hand grip at gunshow with that in mind. So, after reading a bit, and being the slacker I am, opted to try mighty Kiwi Cordovan paste shoe polish. Just soused it on liberally, let sit for 20 min, buff with old sock, and do it again, about six coats. Turned out pretty nice, nice enough for me anyway. For whatever reason, the second one is significantly smoother to the touch, dunno exactly why, but guess it was that the stock itself must have been better sanded when I got it, as both got handled same way, and even the first one was finished with the shoe polish, so dunno. The slight lighting glare exaggerates it some, but it's true the upper and lower hand guards didn't fully take to it quite as well as the butt stock for whatever reason, but again oh well. Time will tell how it'll hold up. I note that folks who do this say it's really the carnauba wax that's the best, and Kiwi no longer uses that, but again again, oh well. :) - OS

  30. I think there are many times that the parents know that they have a problem child and may be ashamed to admit it and by trying to build that person up what they are really doing is trying to take the blame off of them and putting it on anything other then themselves. People would think more highly of them if they would just admit they had a problem child but they don't look at it that way. Trevon Martin was a problem child and the only reason he was in Florida living with his father it because he got kicked out of school for causing trouble. Yet when he got killed in a clear case of self defense it almost cause a national incident because his family refused to admit he was not the innocent little boy they showed in the pictures from years earlier. I will never understand this type of attitude by people but all my family members know, if they get in trouble from bad self inflicted decisions there is no mercy coming from me for their actions.............jmho   I call it Tough Love!!

  32. You make good points. I have no problems with the shoot and I believe the the robber caused his own demise. My only point is that I don't think that the family should be condemned because a young man made a stupid life ending decision. They are simply speaking about the character that the robber displayed to them. If it were my son, I would be shocked and defensive also, but I would also have to come to terms that I really didn't know my son. Have a good day!

  41. I don't know if they are a "criminal family", but even if it was out of character, that young man made a poor decision and it cost him his life. I've argued before about the face that young people put on for family and the face that they have for their peers. Peer pressure will get you killed. If it were my kid, I'd be on television saying the same thing. It was out of character for my kid, but he committed a crime and has to pay the price.

  42. I spent many a day back years ago playing in the mud but never owned a jeep but you guys are sure making an old man jealous and remembering all the fun I had with my 1977 Dodge Ramcharger Bought it in 1978 used off a GMC truck lot. I had been watching it for about two moths and it was never moved so I stopped in one day and walked into showroom and ask if that Dodge Ramcharger was for sale and  you would have thought I was from another planet by the looks I got. Then this salesman walks up and said yes, it is and I said I would like to hear it run and look it over. The truck has 17,809 miles on it, was Metallic black and perfect interior and started right up and drove perfect. On the way back to the dealership I asked him how much they were asking for it and his reply was make me an offer. I was quiet for a few minutes and he was almost holding his breath in anticipation.  Knowing they were not going to take my offer we had to start somewhere and I said $1,850.00 tax title and license. He said let me talk with the owner when we get back. The owner of the dealership came out and shook hands with me and said you just bought yourself a truck and a nice one at that. Hell, I didn't buy it, I stole it. I couldn't wait to sign the papers before they changed their minds. It was a pure stock Ramcharger with automatic and a/c, smoke tinted windows and I was in heaven. I owned my first 4x4 and had great plans for it. back then I was a dodge guy and I was driving a Lil' Red Dodge Step side at the time. All my buddies had 4X4's and they all had the smaller versions like CJ 5 and CJ 7 and hopped up 304's in them with headers, A few guys had the old Ford Broncos in the smaller versions and 302 Ford hot rod motors. A guy named Lark had a Small Bronco with a 351 Cleveland in it and he was kind of the boss of the club. The club name was the Dixie Mud Hawgs. When I showed up three days later to the meeting everyone was wondering why I was there and I told them i came to join and they all walked outside and looked at my huge what they called Big ugly Black truck. My brother was helping me build a real off road family truck. Didn't change any thing in it's appearance except the wheels and tires and lift. Put 15X35X38 monster mudders with 6 inch life kit in it. Put on a sent of Lock out front hubs which was something not seen on many Chrysler products 4X4's because of cost but my brother had all the connections. We replaced the NP(New Process) 203 Transfer case with a Sontag High Tech G2G ( Gear to Gear) to avoid chain stretch under a real load. Added a set of Detroit Lockers to front and read differentials. had the tranny beefed with all over size power valve body valves and springs with porcelain clutches and an Ed Roth power drive 3000 stall torque converter. And last but not least a 340 6 packDodge power plant under the hood. Sure was glad it came with a 45 gallon gas tank from the factory. By the end of 1979 I was the big dog in the Mud hawgs because i never lost a mud trough meet and never got stuck on any off road rally's and had to be pulled but I did a lot of pulling for guys that did. When I locked everything in to pull go off road top speed was 9 mph but that was up hill, down hill, in mud out of mud 9 mph. On the highway just running it got a whopping 10 MPG on cruise control at 60 MPH. I bought the truck for $1,850.00. Invested another 10 grand in it over the next 2 years. Drove it off and on till 1985 and went to a mud meet in Ashland City at the fairgrounds. Truck had not been off road in two years and was all clean and shinning like a new penny. My boys and I went over to watch the competition. It was two day event. 1st place was $5,000.00 and some guy with a really big mouth from Missouri was leading in the distance traveled in the mud pit and all he did was run his mouth that the hicks from Tennessee didn't have anything for him. I told the boys we would be going back Sunday and I spent most of the night under the Dodge checking everything out. When we got there Sunday he was already running his mouth about his Jeep called White Lightening when i pulled up to the entrance gate and registered to compete. For those of ya'll that don't know the mud trough starts shallow, is about 40 yards long and gets deep quick to about 4 feet of mud which no one had reached yet. I was the last truck to do the trough. Most guys got a running start and hit it fast. I just drove up to the starting line The guy dropped the flag and I drove the complete length of the trough, turned around and drove back and White Lightening was already loading to leave. That day the Dodge went to a new home.  A man walked up to me and said I have been hearing rumors about that truck but never really knew or believed it existed. How much do you want for it. The guy was driving a Chevy pure Stock 85 Blazer. He gave me the Blazer and title and $12,000.00 and I gave him the Dodge and the title. Sold the Blazer to the GMC dealership I bought the Dodge at in 1978. Drove GMC Pick up for 280,000 miles and now I own a 1997 Jeep Cherokee  Sport 4X2.  yep!!! very sorry for the long post but hope ya'll can bear with an old man and what few great memories he has left................ :hiding: :hiding:

  44.   I hardly think that shooting a wild animal - any wild animal - that is posing a threat of death or serious, bodily injury to the shooter makes that person a 'wannabe criminal.'  If such a threat justifies using deadly force against another human being I hardly think that use of such force against a threatening, wild animal would be viewed as unjustified.  We are discussing options for a firearm to use as protection from such, potential threats not the best firearm for illegal poaching.
