  2. Folks; I wanted to go ahead and wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving as we head into the evening. This holiday some of you may be traveling. Others may be spending the weekend at home. Hopefully you find yourselves surrounded by people that you care about, whether they be friends, family, brothers in arms, or fellow emergency services crew. Whatever you're doing, I hope that you stay safe and have much to be thankful for. And since this is a firearms forum and since we think about and talk about things like this, if you are out and about this weekend... please be vigilant. As the saying goes, keep your head on a swivel if you are out at the movies, at the shopping malls, or anywhere else that there are large crowds. Watch what's going on around you and trust your instincts if something feels wrong or out of place. By all means, if you are able, carry your sidearm. And give serious thought to carrying some sort of personal first aid kit. If you've never considered the latter, maybe spend some time this weekend putting together something that would easily fit into a pocket, purse, satchel or backpack. Again, I hope you all stay safe and have time to reflect on the blessings in your own life. Hooray for the holidays and God bless. --David

  3. The Savage Swede earned it's keep last night. I shot her right at dark (4:50) on my favorite patch of TVA land. Unfortunately, some of the Well-To-Dos who live in a nearby subdivision object to scruffy hunters & by the time I'd got her dragged into a clearing, the cops showed up. After a tense, although very pleasant, 45 minute conversation with the local Deputy & TWRA Officer it was determined that whilst close to the houses, I had done nothing wrong. They even dragged her out to my truck for me!

  4. If anyone's looking to cash in on the Remington UMC $5 rebate, Cabella's has 9mm UMC in stock at 11.99/box. I know that's not as good as Rural King's 10.35/box sale, but RKGuns hasn't dropped their price yet and who knows if it will be in stock when you need it. Plus Cabellas doesn't collect sales tax to Tennessee AND they have free shipping with Promo Code 6HOLIDAY. After rebate, it's $6.99/box, delivered.

  8. Words of wisdom David. Thank you. And Thanks to all that contribute here at TGO. Wishing you , our Service members and First Responders as a Blessed and Safe Thanksgiving day and weekend. I'm headed into work in a bit, so no doubt I'll have the opportunity to Thank many of our local first responders in person. Holidays are, unfortunately, busy ER days. Be safe folks.

  9. My prayer tonight will be for a safe and happy Thanksgiving for everyone here and their families and for our country. I'll also be saying an additional prayer for those that are serving in the military and are away from their families keeping us safe here at home.

  11. Here's the b.s. part of your argument. Do you seriously think these people give a damn whether or not they have a "right" to do something? If government is the answer, I don't like the question.

Instead of issuing tickets, violators were given a frozen turkey or ham along with other foods donated by the Lynn Jones Foundation. Many of the people were simply shocked, but pleased by the department’s gesture. Click here for video.

  16. Truly my favorite holiday. I hope each of you is able to enjoy the time with family and friends - either the family you were born with or the family you choose. I go into this holiday with profound gratitude for all the family and friends in my life.

  19. Do it yourself, easy enough. Get a 45 caliber bore mop and chuck it into a drill. Then saturate the mop with a metal polish, like Flitz. Insert the bore mop into the cylinder and spin it for about 15 seconds. Repeat until you get the desired results. This should polish the chamber to ease extraction.

  23. If you don't have access to a welder for the angle iron, you can build a frame with iron pipe and attach plywood to that.

  27. I would build a small frame out of steel angle iron (like 1x1) and then use 3/8 plywood. It should be lighter than 3/4 plywood and plenty strong to hold a deer out past the wheel wells. You could even put some hinges on it and fold it over itself when you are not using it on the way out to keep the width of your 4 wheeler down. Something like this. Not to scale obviously. Put hinges where blue lines are.

  28. 1/2" might be too thin, if you go with plywood I would go with at least 3/4". The dragging part might be a good idea though, specially if steep inclines are involved. I have a skedco I used to use, it should protect the deer from any drag damage, even at that distance. Skedcos are pricey, but they make ones just for deer: https://www.amazon.com/Magnum-Deer-Sleighr-Game-Sled/dp/B001CJI7XA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1480012329&sr=8-1&keywords=Deer+Drag+Sleds

  30. I won't be doing Thanksgiving until Saturday. An old friend up at Fort Campbell who got home from a 9-month deployment just yesterday. His wife wisely decided to push things to the right a few days to let him shake off the time zone change and jet lag. But, for myself, later this afternoon I'll be making a "Sunday Lunch" of sirloin tip roast, mashed potatoes, skillet corn, and Yorkshire pudding. No need to skimp out.

  31. I will be throwing a Turkey breast on the Kamado Joe around noon. Just a simple roast as my mom has to have gravy so the temp will be up a bit with a drip pan. It's been brining for just over 24 hours so I should be good to go. I 'll take a pic when I get it on the grill.

  33. Right after I caught that Five-seveN mag sale, they shot up from $27.99 to $35.00 a mag and you had to buy 10 to get free shipping instead of 5. Glad I pulled the trigger when I did! I got 5 shipped free @ $27.99 ea.

  38. Happy Thanksgiving to all the folks and folks families on TGO. Good advice David and thanks for another great year here on TGO. I plan on staying home with the mutt as I hate traveling on holidays. I'm sure family will stop in and see me as they always do and they always bring food. Some edible some not so much but I never tell them that. I don't want the edible stuff to stop coming...................

  40. If you've never heard of Dixie Gun Works in Union City Tennessee you may want to check them out. http://www.dixiegunworks.com/default.php?cPath=22_162_192 If your not comfortable ordering online it looks like about a 2 hour drive from your location. Now for some advice, get there early as this place is part museum and part retail so you may find yourself there longer than you think. Here is your warning, set a budget before you walk in the door as I've always walked out with stuff I never thought I wanted or needed but now I have them.

  44. A few friends and I just leased some property this year. The one area I usually hunt is too small to carry a rifle on so that place is a muzzleloader or bow area only. Taking a couple deer off the new place makes it worth doing. The rifle I used this morning hasn't killed a deer in probably twenty years. The 7400 was passed down to me many years ago and I put it in the safe as a gun to hand down at some point. The 06 did its job. Being bucked out, I have to focus on coyote with the .22 mag and taking pictures with the big camera.

  45. Federal gun free school zones act would still apply to people without permits even if the state weapons criminal offenses were removed. Unless other parts of the weapons statute was modified, it would still be illegal to carry on 'posted property', K-12 schools, and colleges. We could legally carry on K-12 school property and inside K-12 schools WITH a permit if our state law allowed it. Right now with the make up of the legislature and governor, I'd rather limited time spent on removing restrictions on permits VS time spent on constitutional carry in 2017. I don't see the point in spending time on something just to make a political statement when you could use that same time on something that can actually pass. Politicians will only entertain so many gun bills each year. Time was wasted in 2016 on bills that honestly had zero positive effect for people with or without permits. Bills like the 'posted property liability' law and changes to company HR related weapons policies were just political noise for politicians to appear pro gun in an election year. The same time could have been spent on removing the 'no gun sign' criminal law and also putting in an exemption for people with permits on school property. Those two things would make carry legal in a lot more places.

  46. Picked up a few bottles of Elmer T. Lee today. I've been looking for it for a while. I had my first pour this evening, and I must say that it definitely lives up to all the praises. I'll have to watch myself and just have this for an occasional pour given its scarcity, otherwise I could see the bottles becoming empty very quickly. 47. I'm building one. I wouldn't build one to make it a run of the mill stock Glock, mine will get mostly all aftermarket parts. I look at it as platform and not brand. I can get $400 1911's, but they don't compare to my $2k ones. The same applies here, just I'm building it instead of dropping $2k on an agency, salient or ZEV. I'm literally waiting for all the rest of the parts in the next few days. Here's a pre-build mock up: ETA: Midway has the black frame for $99 right now. It comes with the jig and needed bits for completion. Also can be completed with a file, sandpaper and a hand drill.
