  2. One of the benefits of me organizing the forum knife buy with the folks of Pro Tech is that it made myself and the President of Pro Tech Dave friends. I will not be able to attend Blade Show again this year due to having to go back offshore, so I convinced my new friend to sell one one of their Blade Show 2014 exclusive knives, On a Fed Ex truck at the moment and on its way to my home is a Custom Stainless Steel Dark Angel knife that I cannot wait to see! I had the option of getting it with a Damascus blade but I chose to have a regular satin finished blade with it, I am very excited about this one and can't wait for it! I will post pictures of it along with my other Stainless Pro tech knives when I get a chance

  3. I was getting gas yesterday morning and got a little scare...   It takes a while to fill up the truck, so I had my earbuds in listening to an audiobook. I am pretty aware when I'm out and about, but not exactly code red...just my usually glancing around. I saw this black guy in a nice suit pull up to a pump across from me. He starts pumping his gas and goes and talks to a black lady directly across from me. I figured they knew each other, so I let him drop off my radar.   When my pump clicked, I rounded off the last 26 cents, removed the hose, and turned around to hang up the nozzle. This guy was right on top of me. I mean uncomfortably close and with his arm outstretched. I straightened my left hand, holding the nozzle, moved back a few steps, and reached in my pocket out of instinct. Apparently that scared him as much as he scared me, judging by his expression. Realistically, it probably only took 1.5 seconds to evaluate the situation, see he had nothing in his hands but a church pamphlet, and let it register that it was the same guy in the suit from earlier.   I pulled my hand out of my pocket and yanked my earbuds free as I hung up the nozzle and he apologized. He was trying to tap me on the shoulder to offer me a church bulletin and invite me to church. That explains being inside my "too damn close for comfort" circle. I told him "I'm good, you just scared all the Hell right out of me" but took one anyway, apologized for being so jumpy, and left.   I'm NOT EVER wearing earbuds in public again...he wouldn't have gotten that close otherwise. Next time, it might not be one of the good guys...lesson learned, but I should have known better to begin with.

  5. Earbuds really do cut down on situational awareness. I get uncomfortable seeing as many people wearing them in public and in stores as I do. Most of those folks seem a lot more tunnel vision than the average sheep.

  9. My 16 yo son was driving the car with me in it one night about 2-3 weeks ago and we pulled into a well lit gas station. I saw a guy with baggy pants walking toward the building like he was going in to pay or grab cigarettes as we pull up to the pump. As soon as we stopped, my son turned slightly to start opening the door and the guy was close enough to the car on his side that he could have grabbed the door handle.   Now, my son and I do go to IDPA matches occasionally so he is familiar with having a gun on his hip and drawing. So his first instinct upon seeing the guy was to reach around to his hip like he was going to draw a pistol. The guy immediately put his hands up, said sorry and backed off. He went about his business with no other suspicious moves, but he did hang out at the pump with a women in the passenger seat for longer than is normal. I was in the passenger seat with my shirt tail up JIC.   Obviously I was proud of my son for reacting so quickly. He obviously wasn't armed, but the guy didn't know that, and that movement was all it took to get him to abort whatever he was going to do. Could have been just ask for gas money, but he definitely got the idea.

  10. Wait for 14 months until you have a yard would be my first suggestion.  They will be very energetic and even though you may take it hunting, it needs lots of daily exercise/stimulation.  I suppose if you are going to take it to a park or something every day that may be ok, but if you don't, plan on her making her own entertainment with whatever she can find.    The costs long term are moderate, but well worth it.  Short term shoudln't be too bad outside of a good crate, shots, and some things like collars, beds, etc.   Good food is expensive and good vet care isn't cheap, even at a "value" vet.  It will be an active dog and hunting dogs will get hurt and require care.  I would highly recommend insurance for anyone with a new puppy.  In the long run I believe it will save you money.  If you were going to have a dog that never did anything, it may not be a big issue, but I can tell you from experience that fixing torn ACL's and extended stays at the vet because they ate something they shouldn't have aren't cheap.    I don't want to sound degrading, but if you ask the question about costs because you are on a limited budget right now, it probably isn't the time to get a dog.  The initial cost may not be bad, but as soon as one injury or sickness comes up, it will be expensive and I hate to see you not be able to do what is needed if money is potentially an issue.   Edit:  I guess I didn't put a number.  I would say expect $400-$500 for initial costs (including spaying at 6 mo), and then $50/month for good food.  I would plan on a yearly vet bill of $500-$700.  It may not always be that much, but one issue can cost you $200-$300 a pop.

  18. I'll wear earbuds sometimes when I don't want to socialize with anyone. I don't even plug them in though, their really just to keep people from trying to talk with me at Walmart. I also like letting the scammers looking for "gas money" think they've inconvenienced me by making me take them out while they give me their pitch. Most of the time I just start putting them back in and turn away mid way through the story without saying anything. Shuts them up and lets them know that I'm not buying it. Yeah its kind if a dick move, but so is trying to scam me out of my hard EARNED dough. Plus I would never be that rude to someone who wasn't obviously a meth/crack head.

  19. Expenses: Shots 6,9,12 weeks again at a year and every 3 years after that. Food - your biggest expense. Stay away from foods with corn, wheat, and/or soy. I use 4Health Grain Free from tractor supply ($35 for 30lbs) Crate - buy one large enough for her as an adult and use the divider in it. Training - start NOW. Don't ever stop. I suggest starting with a Petsmart puppy class. Once obedience training is finished you should then sink a few more thousand into training her for a hunting dog. Most bird dogs are not "naturals" I will disagree partially with the wait. If you are diligent with your routine and training classes you will be fine. You can over exercise a puppy under 18 months and cause long term issues. A note on spaying - if you can wait until she is over 2 years old it is better for her development. At the same time if you can't keep her or him from breeding then you should own the dog anyway. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

  20. I have been meaning to say this, I was working on my wife's car a while back and Zach Bates came around campaigning. I was in the middle of changing a tail light on my wife's car when he stopped to talk.   I didn't have any real questions ready for him, but I did manage to ask him where he stood on the 2nd Amendment.  He told me very pro and even show me what he was carrying.   We did get to talking a little and he even said if I ever wanted to to let him know when I was going shooting and if he was available he would like to go.  He said if he won or not, either way if I wanted to invite him out to the range sometime.   I thought that was a nice touch.    He is running for the County Mayor.

  23.   I'm just going to look the other way.  PSA has crazy good prices on a lot of stuff but they've been riding the .22 gravy train for well over a year now.  When they get it in it's minimum $50/brick and now they're bundling the CCI standard in with a bunch of other things as "specials".  They're still charging $50/brick.

  24. Having owned both 9 and 40 Shields, there really isn't a whole lot of difference in the handling. I may still prefer the Shield in 9 but that has a whole lot to do with my preferring Glocks in 40. I can have all my Glocks as 40 but still have a gun chambered in 9mm. There are few claims out that the Shield .40 may not be up to the higher pressure, supposedly one or two out of several thousand blow apart. This does not worry me and I would own another .40 Shield in a heartbeat. It does appear that .40 magazines for Shields are easier to acquire.

  25. Good looking addition to your collection, willis. But I prefer the center and right hand. Guess I'm just not an OTF kind of guy...yet. Would love to see that Damascus blade. My best knife is a Kim Breed Damascus Ladder Folder. Since I'm a dummy and can't post pics here; if you'd like to see a pic, pm me a cell number and I'll send you a few. But you probably know what it looks like anyway.

  29. From my experience, spoofers use a list of numbers.   It will be taking a risk of expence either way. Cost of possible loss of business for waiting it out, or cost of implimenting a new number, including updating marketing materials (which would also take time).   Spoofers are complete assholes. They are basically a hybrid of thieves and harassers in a way.   Hopefully ths is resolved sooner rather than later.

  32. Well, considering that when it comes to authority in the law enforcement the Sheriff of any county is the highest ranking LEO. If something bad takes place in his county and TBI and State Troopers are called in the Sheriff is still in charge and can designate authority but they are the boss for some reason gives some of the I'M ABOVE THE LAW attitude. Sure glad when Kasey had her one and only batch of puppy's I gave thought about taking the to Sumner County Humane Society but instead posted them on fishing sites and gun sites I am a member of and had great homes for all 4 of her puppies in two days and folks send me pictures often of them...........

  35.   My first dog, Pal, was a rat terrier, and he was bigger than most rat terriers. I got him when I was 5 and I can remember watching him kill them. He would catch them out of their holes and run circles around them until he could get behind them. He would then grab them by the neck and bite and shake until he broke their neck. I have seen him kill groundhogs that weighed just as much as he did. I had him for 10 years and he would kill 3-4 every year.   I am not saying that groundhogs aren't fierce little fighters. The don't go down without a fight and I have had to doctor up cuts and scratches on Pal after some of the kills he made.

  39. Get a copy of "Sixguns" by Elmer Keith...   It will be very enlightening in regards to extreme range shots with handguns... The truth is that handguns are far more accurate than the majority of folks holding them... We used to shoot at 75 to 100 yards with revolvers and 1911's...   leroy

  40. Thanks guys. I enjoyed teaching both classes and hopefully we will be doing some more classes soon in Knoxville.   We had talked about offering a "Suarez Regional Training Day" in August if there is interest in that . Those are typically a 6 hour block of working on specific skills with a price range of normally $60 to $80. If there is enough interest we may go ahead and schedule it for Aug 3 since I'll already be in the area for the ORSA SECRET CITY IDPA match on Aug 2.

  42. I came across this sign posted on a small bridge on the trail that leads to the Donley Cabin in the Tellico/Citico area a couple of summers ago. The bridge, sign was just off of the road where the parking area to walk the trail or go to the cabin are: The summer before that, around the 4th of July, while camping along the Tellico River we overheard a couple of TWRA guys telling the folks in the campsite next to us that they had already had a couple of bear vs. human related incidences in that area. This incident also took place in the same, general part of the Cherokee National Forest (although down around Benton) a few years ago. A mother mauled and left in critical condition while trying to fend off the bear, her little boy attacked and her little girl killed and at least partially eaten : http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/04/16/bear.attack/index.html?_s=PM:US Here is a report about a woman who was killed by black bears in the Smoky Mountains, also a few years back (2000.) http://www.mysmokymountainvacation.com/news/bear-attack.html Then there was the 8 year old Florida boy who was attacked by the same bear not once but twice in the same incident (the bear attacked, the father managed to run it off then it came back and attacked, again - luckily, the father managed to run it off a second time.) The formatting on this article is screwy for some reason but the story is still readable: http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2008/aug/12/black-bear-attacks-boy-in-smokies-father-also/?printer=1/ As for only seeing them in Cades Cove, there have been black bears sighted running around in West Knox County over the past, couple of years. This sighting took place last summer: http://www.wbir.com/news/article/282065/2/Black-bear-spotted-in-West-Knox-County I have also, personally, seen a black bear running around right in downtown Gatlinburg, running across the road and through the parking lot of a hotel. This wasn't even after dark - it happened in the middle of the day, right around lunch time. I think it was just scared and trying to get back to the forest as it ran past at least one group of people who I don't believe were ever even aware it was there. So, sure, bear attacks aren't all that common and two-legged threats are more likely but that doesn't mean that every, single black bear got that memo. I also certainly don't want anyone to think I am advocating shooting/shooting at bears that are just minding their own business. Further, I will never understand people who purposefully approach a potentially dangerous, wild animal, walk to within a couple of feet of the animal, pose for a picture and then act all surprised when the animal attacks them. However, I don't want to end up as a snack, either. My thinking when I spend time in such areas is that a gun that would be 'sufficient' for a two-legged threat might not be sufficient for a bear but a gun/ammo combination which would at least stand a chance against a bear would most likely be more than adequate for two-legged threats so why not opt for the latter? For me, that means a four-inch .357 Magnum (formerly a Taurus but now a Ruger GP100) loaded up with Buffalo Bore 180 grain lead flat nosed, hard cast bullets. Even that might be 'marginal' for an aggressive black bear and If I were in grizzly country, I'd want something bigger but I think it would at least be better than a 9mm, etc. for potential bear defense.
