  1. As I said in a previous post, I thank the members of this forum for the ability to have decent discussion about this. Maybe it is because we are all Tennesseans, and this event hits home, maybe it is because we know TGO David will swing the “Ban Hammer” if needed, or maybe it is because we care about each other, but this is healthy discussion, not a bunch of folks railing on one political side or the other as o the MO forum (mostly railing against one side). It has been a very hard week here in my world, and I give thanks that I feel comfortable expressing what is going on in this forum.

  2. This, precisely. and our society also has a lot to do with our "erosion". I know each of these is a DENSE topic... so try not to read into this too deeply, but here's my shorthand take on what's happening: 1. We kicked out God - however you may feel about religion, it used to be at least some form of check/balance and a guardrail for how one should act or treat others. Not flawlessly mind you (because.... people) 2. We glorified violence - It's in every movie, every video game. No, I don't think that makes people killers (i'm a gamer), but it does lead to being desensitized and accept it 3. We accepted a Non-standard definition of family - I mean no offense to anyone by saying this, but a two parent household, who can cover both male and female viewpoints are crucial for society. 4. We wanted a free internet - This one is tough for me. I want free internet.... but we've now had a generation of kids who've grown up with access to EVERYTHING and most of the time that's without guidance. And they aren't looking up math problems 5. We drugged the population - I'm speaking Opioid, anti-depressant, etc. Big pharma and doctors started pushing pills on anyone. 100% there are people who need it, but not as many as they shelled out for a kick back 6. We took it easy on crime - We started looking at criminals as babies just down on their luck and not holding them accountable for their actions 7. We ignored those in need - Everyone (dem or rep) has ignored the margins when it comes to poverty, nobody actually goes into these impoverished communities and spends a penny to improve it. Needs lead to crime and eventually it's culture 8. We stopped seeing each other as people - Instead, we're enemies. If you don't believe what i believe, then we can't get along There's more, but i'm tired of typing

  3. See below... I think we're so fixated upon the current state and result of things that we neglect to really follow the trail back to where it began. As a result, we keep swinging at the symptoms by creating more laws in an attempt to stop activities that are already illegal. So, let's look at how we got to where we are. I know that discussion of the disintegration of the family unit and abandonment of Christian values as our national moral compass are things that some of us simply won't agree upon. Fine. I think they both have a role here, but we'll skip over them and go instead to the idea that the government should do something. Prior to the 1950s, our country had state government funded mental hospitals. As with any other medical treatment, it is easy to look back at the methods and protocols used in that era and accuse that they were crude, primitive, and sometimes cruel. It is easy to say that from the vantage point of modern medicine, but the same can be said about literally any aspect of medicine when you compare what we have today to what they had then. Choosing not to argue about the fact that what they had then was the best of their era, they still had a government funded approach to mental health which kept dangerous people off of the streets. But then, in the 1960s, laws were changed to limit the ability of state and local officials to admit people into mental health hospitals. This lead to budget cuts in both state and federal funding for mental health programs and, as a result, states across the country began closing and downsizing their psychiatric hospitals. Since the 1950s, the number of beds in state psychiatric hospitals has declined by over 91 percent. As a result of this phenomenon, many state psychiatric hospitals that had once served thousands of patients every day are now either shuttered or, at best, so much smaller that they have to turn away more patients than they serve. Now, we can argue whether gender dysphoria is a mental illness or not, but prior to 2012 it was considered as such. As our society has become more progressive, the classification changed. [source] Maybe a mistake was made. Several of the past mass killer events seem to suggest a correlation, at least. You know what? I'd vote 100% in favor of more government funding for mental health treatment, every damn day of the week, if we could get rid of some of the utter bull#### that our government funds today.

  4. We can talk about "seeing into next week" and not catch the evil. I see putting LEO into every school as a GOOD step into the direction that will stop school shootings. Next step, allowing firearms in the school as protection with trained people to use the firearms.

  5. Back when I lost my oldest son to an auto accident I didn't get depressed but did have problems dealing with it and kind of climbed into a cocoon attitude. I still functioned as needed because I still had a younger son that needed a father and a wife that needed a husband. As time went on I was able to slowly climb out of the cocoon and be myself again. I still think about Doug Jr. everyday and sometimes I wonder what his life would have been today. Even though I was hurting for quite a while I never considered hurting anyone.

  6. So to say this in fewer words, "Evil people doing evil things with tools that are easy to get". More kids are killed with cars than guns, yet we do not talk about cars the way we talk about guns.

  7. The mental health issue is a tough one. There are obviously many people who simply shouldn’t be walking around in public. My concern is who gets to make that decision. There are no doubt many folks who’d put me in an asylum if they could. Some of these folks happen to be elected officials. I wish I knew the solution. If it were easy, I guess it wouldn’t still be a problem.

  8. Not to discount any of those points, but we're devolving as a society. The more we resemble a Godless society that doesn't effectively deter crime, can't disagree without hate, and actively dismantles families by punishing the married poor and incentivizing single motherhood, the worse it's going to get.

  10. This was a panic buy during the early days of Covid. Thought there was a chance that the ammo shortage would be even more brutal than it was. My shooting partner and I saw the price of .22lr and bought this randomly after he received his dd214 in April after weeks of stopping the spread. Needless to say we never needed it. The CO2 should still be viable. I am offering this free, with stipulations. I have held onto it solely for the idea of teaching my nephew to shoot. Im looking for a well established member who wants to teach the next generation shooting, safety, and generally break the stigma about gun ownership. I have at least 350 sealed bb rounds. All free. If someone were sitting on 9mm HD rounds I would take that as a trade so I can cycle mine. Also if you wanted to contribute .380/12/556. But that is by no means a requirement. The requirement is that you’re an established member who is going to teach the next generation niece/nephew/grandchildren that shooting is no more vilified than hanging out in pool halls, hitting the golf range, or throwing darts. Meetup would be ideally my driveway, otherwise Goodlettsville police station. If this ad doesn’t receive feedback from a well established member I will delete it in 7 days. TNGO has been more than kind to me, want to pay it forward and hoping to make someone a “cool” family member that can and teach the next generation. ‘’Scotty

  11. While more kids are killed “with cars” than guns, they are not killed intentionally and with malice, with cars. I agree guns are the easiest tool. What’s the saying “work smarter, not harder”. Evil will do what evil does.

  12. Nothing is going to change. The democrats had control of the House and Senate and didn't do anything. They will continue to threaten us with gun control every time this happens. The Republicans will continue to blame mental health then refuse to actually allocate funds for more treatment.

  13. If you had the means to buy six or seven cars, would anyone really care about that? Or pocket knives? Or baseball bats? All of those are things that you could kill a person with. None would likely raise an eyebrow with most folks. The media focuses on the guns because the politicians told them to, and the people who own the politicians told them to focus on guns. It's all about systematically disarming the people so that the people are powerless. And most people won't believe that even though the justification for it is all over the global news every week, playing out in real-time for them.

  14. Picked up these two jewels in the last few months. Top one is the Magnum Research BFR .44. Six round and 5” barrel. Bisley style grip. The hottest load I’ve shot out of it so far is the Underwood 255 grain Keith. Feels like I’m shooting a .38. I do need to find a shorter front sight blade for it. This thing seems to be built like a Swiss watch. I bought some 260 grain hard cast Keith bullets from Rimrock Bullets. I need to work up some good loads. Second one is a Smith 629-6 .44 with a 3” barrel. Haven’t been able to find much info on it and I don’t feel like paying for a Smith and Wesson letter. It has the Magna-Port style barrel porting. In other words instead of a hole or holes, the ports are the Magna-Port style slots. As you can tell, I’m every bit as much of a Smith and Wesson expert as Slingblade was. So, if anyone has any info on this model just feel free to educate me on it. Both of these are a joy.

LOL There is a different between a gay man and a man that happens to be gay. I've also had some very constructive talks with my good friends biracial gay Daughter. She actually gives me hope for kids her age. She's almost 17.

  19. Some folks are going to take this in a bad way...on either side. I would just ask you to consider the following statement and my reasoning. The guns are why we have some of problems at the level we do, and that's a risk we're assuming as a society for the protection they offer. We can talk about all the other things that can kill, but for the same reasons we want them for our own safety, guns are just efficient for those who want to do evil. Put a modern gun into the hands of someone who is set to attack society, the potential for what we saw Monday is very easy to manufacture. A knife or something else common but deadly can't come close to the ability a gun has to create death at scale. And even some the worst people out there can't or won't participate in arm reach intimacy with violence; they need the simplicity and detachment using a gun brings as a stand off tool to perpetrate the act. Guns may not be the root of problem, but they're the tool of choice for those who embody the problem. American society has enabled that. It's the danger of risk in a cultural philosophy that wants the population to be able to engage a corrupt and hostile government with open force. I'll mourn for those lost in this shooting and every shooting. The random brutality of the is why they are taken is a tragedy with each one gone. I'll even still say the risk we've seen and what may come isn't worth forcibly disarming the population to the point of disadvantage against our government's strength in force. But I won't shy away from acknowledging guns enabled what we saw because we've made them easy to get for our own protection of liberty.

  20. Politicians like gun control because its an illusion. It makes them appear to be trying to address a problem, when in fact it restricts the rights of the citizens. Which is the ultimate goal. Its much easier to blame an inanimate object than to try to deal with the much more complex problem of mental illness. Smoke and mirrors folks. That's all it is.

  21. I know the mother of one of the kids killed. Not well, but I know her. I can't even begin to think of how the life for her and her family life is irrevocably changed. It's just an ineffable amount of sorrow that I hope time can heal. Some can berate the Trans community by thinking the shooter was representative of their ilk, but that's as shortsighted as those who would lump all gun owners into a mischaracterization so wide and far. You don't have to accept or appreciate their lifestyle to acknowledge yesterday was an evil act needing no further characterization. Those officers showed what speed in a situation like this can do. A lone shooter is a threat that can be neutralized quickly enough by a few men ready to be brave when the moment calls. I'm thankful the rest of the kids and staff at that school had responders who were found to measure up to all we could have asked while answering that call. This spreads a lot wider than that one school. I can't begin to imagine how many kids and parents had an emotional day as the perception of normal was shattered for a great many across the area. May we never have a day like yesterday again.

  23. If you wish to pass it along, I would gladly take it. And just for the reason you would like. I have a few young friends that would benefit from this. Sadly, they are not in my neighborhood. I would need to go outside Nashville, to the Cookeville area where some of my young 2nd and 3rd cousins live. As you say, a good way to introduce them to shooting. Thanks for offering this. Beautiful Pup!

  31. Part of the problem with the lack of mental health services is directly due to... government involvement. It has been a minute since I've read up on this topic, so I can't give the most articulate answer but in short it has to do with the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lanterman–Petris–Short_Act. The simplest explanation if memory serves me right is that Nixon passed this legislation when he was Gov. of CA prior to being president, and then ran with it once elected. The left viewed people being involuntarily committed against their will as a violation of "patient" (civil) rights, and the right... was all for it to save a couple of bucks. It truly was the perfect example of bipartisan legislation that allowed both parties to claim a victory, all while severely handicapping generations to come. Reagan doubled-down on closing more facilities later as well. Again, it's been probably since college when I read into this, once in awhile I'll hear it brought up on a podcast by someone far more well versed than I. But in summary to the best of my knowledge it was a time in the 60's when civil rights were center stage, and the D's wanted to show their humanity in not keeping people hospitalized against their will, and the R's were more than happy to claim victory on saving taxpayer money. I also have appreciated how this thread and forum stay away from politics and merely mention party lines as it shows this is a failure of government as a whole to protect it's own citizens. The fact that there's a 3-6 month wait for mental health providers on something like basic counseling, and the fact that if therapy is needed even on a biweekly basis the costs could possibly be 10% of the median households post tax earnings is a whole different subject. A quick google search shows that most of the recent articles about the LPS act are referencing the homelessness and mental health crisis out west https://californiaglobe.com/articles/state-auditors-report-shows-lanterman-act-reform-is-badly-needed/.

  33. Love the bisley style grip on whatever they put it on. And even though the shorter barrel means more pain I like it versus the 7.5. Your 629 is basically the "trail boss" they produced without the badging. Your dash model was the first 629s with the internal lock . Obviously the porting was to account for the 3" with full power loads. Judging from the pic you have the later hammer and trigger vs the TB model. Some TBs had the smooth cylinder. The grips are most likely aftermarket to the gun. Originals would have been a Hogue finger groove grip as this gun was mfg for go not show. 2 nice ones Res

  34. I thought we already had red flag laws of some sort. When cancer took my son a few years ago I was depressed of course, but I was too afraid to see and talk to a psychiatrist. I had no feelings of hurting anyone, I was and still am the one hurting, but was afraid of being reported as a severely depressed person. I’m fine but I think of him every day of course. It’s a large hole in your life.

  35. On another note, it is easy to tell that most of the newscasters are not gun owners or enthusiasts. It seemed to be a big deal that she had 7 guns and bought them all fairly recently. Hell, I have picked up 5 lever guns in the last 6 months. Not all were through FFLs, but that is not in-normal, at least for gun enthusiasts. Now, I am not saying she is a gun enthusiast, but you can tell the newscasters don’t realize that it fairly normal. it is normal, right?

  36. Until your Doctor determines your a danger because you don't want to get a vaccine for religious reasons. Red flag laws anyway you dress them up are going to get abused more than they are going to stop bad people. Our society is ill, in a number of different ways, new laws aren't going to fix that, taking away people's rights aren't going to fix that... Changing society one person at a time is the only way to fix it long term. BUT, locking up criminals, and placing people who are a danger to themselves and others in mental institutions - neither of which require any laws to be changed - would probably go a long way to making the streets safe for regular people again. Oh yeah, and maybe looking for links between 'mental health drugs' and these shooting, might be an interesting study.

  37. This should require a consensus from several doctors, in my opinion. Perhaps confirmation from at least two of three. We are talking about taking away a person's rights without trial.

  39. Red flag laws will be the weapon of choice for ex wives/jilted girlfriends as well as pissed off neighbors. Just imagine your home being raided and firearms confiscated simply because your neighbor didn’t like some small thing you did and made a call on you. If an adult can’t be trusted with a firearm, should they be in public at all?

  40. I’ll say this. The school deserves a lot of credit and recognition. One thing you don’t see in the MNPD video is panic teachers and children. They heard the alarm and acted according to a plan that had obviously been practiced. They protected those children as best they can. Unfortunately no plan is perfect or can work flawlessly and the evil got through to a few, but lives were saved by the forethought and planning of the administration and staff. I believe in learning everything we can from these events. 1) I hope more private schools will find ways to employee on-site security or SRO. 2)Any door that is locked for protection should also have some level of glass break prevention. It can’t be bullet proof but internal wire mesh would have prevented or significantly slowed the entry of the assailant. These are not criticisms of Covenant but they will be times brought up at my kids schools as items that need addressing
