What does all that mean?

A few things to take note of is that the classification as “armor piercing” is for bullets only, not the complete cartridge. Despite the mention of handgun caliber above, you can take that to mean that it’s a round that has been made as a handgun caliber at some point.

The bullet (projectile) must also have a core made entirely out of the metals listed above, or be a full jacketed bullet with a jacket weighing more than 25% of its overall weight. This means that the SS109/M855 bullets wouldn’t be covered, as their cores are partly steel, and partly lead. Lead isn’t listed in the metals above. Furthermore, as you’ll see in the list below, the ATF has specifically stated that the SS109/M855 bullets are exempted from AP status.

ATF AP Classified Rounds
  • All KTW, ARCANE, and THV ammo
  • Czech made 9mm Para. with steel core
  • German made 9mm Para. with steel core
  • MSC .25 ACP with brass bullet
  • BLACK STEEL armor and metal piercing ammunition
  • 7.62mm NATO AP and SLAP
  • PMC ULTRAMAG with brass bullet (not copper)
  • OMNISHOCK .38 Special with steel core
  • 7.62×39 ammo with steel core bullets
ATF Exempted Rounds
  • 5.56 SS109 and M855 NATO rounds, with steel penetrator tip.
  • .30-06 M2 AP ammo

Hopefully that clears up some confusion for you like it did for me. You can rest easy that when a range calls for no AP rounds that you’ll be safe using M855 if desired. If you’re in the market for ammo, be sure to check out our sponsor Lucky Gunner for great online ammo prices!

Most of that was said about the 5.45 7N6 stuff too. Yet it was indeed banned.

Gotta` have an ammo can. It must be a solid gold can with green paint sprayed over it. What a "Deal".

That stuff was $399 a day ago.

We are cough, cough, gag, ermmm.... fortunate, to have such a cough, gag, hurls chunks....wonderful company that wants to help us.

Let us "help" them.......................

Remember them, folks. Edited by TN Volunteer

I just spoke with the American Ballistics folks. They're phone is going straight to voice mail due to a heavy call volume. Left a message and they called me right back. They do still have both loaded and component M855. Tips are .12 each/K, loaded is $400/K. The guy on the phone was nice and feels as many of us do here regarding all this BS and about those who might be buying to resell and jack up. They are in GA so shipping is reasonable and though they have a ton of orders they are still getting stuff out pretty quick.

As far as I'm concerned CTD is no longer in business.  They'll never see another dime from me.

I agree a million percent. Bad thing is, they will still sell at that price, I mean gang bangers have an endless supply of money and less pressure against their crime than us law abiding citizens

Hopefully this bad weather has allowed every member of TGO to contact the appropriate representatives and organizations opposing this ban.  I have lost count of the emails sent and voicemails left.  I also have letters ready to be mailed tomorrow.

If you do not stand up and speak then you are part of the problem.  I can guarantee you the anti-gun folks are out in force and making sure their voices are heard.  With record sales of guns and ammunition over the last few years the pro-gun voice should be loud, strong and be roaring in our representatives ears.  If every gun owner will speak up that voice will be heard.  For those who are afraid to put your name in an email, to a phone call or in a letter, You have already lost.

contacted rand paul, sign petition, stopped by walmart for wiper blades and they had 2 1000 round cases and 4 150 round boxes for around 40 cents per round.  This is one of the smallest walmarts i know of, they close every night.  Might be worth a shot if you need it to try rural areas.
