depends on what it was, where, when, etc. If its a bunch of idiots waving guns in public, I will pass ---- as others said, it takes ONE mistake or intentional (left winger sneaks in and shoots) to make the whole thing go really, really badly. If it is a sensible gathering and something I can get to (location, time etc) then yes.6 points

It seems like some things that would never happen to anyone else can happen to me. Dolomite is the only part of this whole deal that can be said to be completely faultless. His kit performed perfectly, until the Spikes lower trapped it because I didn't check it first. Yet he's the one stepping up to make sure everything is right, when he has no obligation to. You just don't find people like that every day. :up:3 points

There are no friendlies, assume they all want to hurt you and take your stuff because they do. It is best to sneak, hide or move at night or you WILL become a victim. The highways are going to draw all the wolves because it will be easy pickings. Forget about a bug out by highway because it will be clogged within 30 minutes. And unless you are already completely packed and your BOV is full of gas you are not going to make it out. The average person is not going to make it ouf of a population center before the other 50% of the other people leaving the cities clog the roadways. What is going to happen is the highways are going to clog like Rita/ Katrina leaving leaving them stranded and with the option of walking to the "hills" or walking back to the cities. And when you start walking you are going to be able to carry far less than what you left with or even left behind. Bugging in has some real advantages and if I lived in a city I would, without a doubt, stay put. First is you already have everything you are going to have without the need to transport it to a new location. You can call for help from those around you while in a remote location you cannot call for help. Another big advantage is you know the area. You also know who friend and who foe is or at least have a good idea. Travelling exposes you to more dangers. It is also easier to defend a building or high rise than a tent in the woods. Those buildings are going to protect you from the elements and be easier to keep warm in and survive in for the average person especially those used to living in the city. Food, at least initially, will be easier to come by in the cities as well as potable water. There are literally a few weeks worth of potable water in your water heater and toilet bowls and that is if you don't ration. With rain gutters, collecting water is much easier too. And as disgusting as it might sound cities have tons of rodents that can be harvested for food. If any type of relief or supplies is handed out it is going to be in the population centers first. You need to also realize that there are going to be a lot more people than just you heading to a bug out location. This is going to clog the roadways like we saw during Rita/Katrina. The only way you might get a head start is if you are in a position to get some notice, like LE, emergency services or the government would get to prepare. Otherwise it is going to be a race to get out and if you are not in the lead you will find yourself stuck in the rear. And once you are stuck you and your stuff become vulnerable to roaming bands of thugs set on taking your stuff for themselves. And honestly it would be easy pickings. Dolomite3 points

I wasnt categorizing no one but I do think its a slap in the face that all the years you were sworn in with your hand on the Bible not the Hindu scriptures or the Koran. I do believe the turning away from God has led us down this path we are on currently.3 points

To the original question, I think the traditional symbols and gestures will be sufficient. I am not one who believes that the majority of society's members will immediately turn aggressive and predatory. Most will be like most of us: nice, honest, and fair. We'll be scared and not looking for trouble, but cautious. If someone verbalizes that they mean no harm and/or use common hand gestures like hands in the air, I will deal with them appropriately. Ultimately it will be their actions that drive my response.2 points

It's only a slap in the face to a Christian (not specifically directing that towards you, but in general) who thinks that the Bible is the only "real" Religion and religious book there should in America or at least that our government should recognize. For anyone else who isn't a Christian the ability to worship as you choose is called Liberty, a pretty important part of the American constitution. I am none of the above, so I feel I am pretty neutral on the issue. I am all for you being able to give your opinion like I have given mine, we just happen to disagree on the irony I see.2 points

This is easy. Buy low, sell high. If you are concerned about civil unrest and didn't ever get around getting an EBR or two, or are concerned paying high $$ just to have your EBR taxed, regulated, confiscated and not be able to sell them or pass on to your heirs..... I would look at a nice scout bolt, lever or long range bolt action rifle. Go the to local store and see what obscure ammo is left on the shelf and match the hatch to the rifle. At least you will have somthing (maybe) legal and a couple hundred rounds. A nice Marlin in 45-70 might be in order.2 points

It's difficult to discuss what we "should do" when we don't know what will get passed or if anything will get passed. Certainly, beforehand, we need to be as active as possible in opposition and that includes our personal efforts of calling and writing our elected officials (and meeting face to face with then when possible) as well as joining every pro-2A group out there with additional contributions to those groups lobbying efforts. Once something does pass...I think every person is going to have to decide for themselves what they are and are not willing to do to retain their rights; rights not given by the Constitution but by God (or if you don't believe in a god then at least rights that every person has simply by being a "person"). I think starting NOW (and we probably should have all alone); we need to be VERY CAREFUL about what information we give here about ourselves...I'm not wearing tin foil but I know enough about technology today to know what data mining can uncover and I suggest that we think carefully before committing something to writing in an internet forum.2 points

INTRODUCTION - Hey folks, Looking through the Survival & Preparedness forum index, I do not see too many discussions on entry level radio communications. One comment up front (stolen from DaveS) - "Practicing" for SHTF situations still calls for LAWS to be followed.". So, if it needs a license to operate....get one. Or don't operate the radio equipment described in this thread. I'll plan on putting some general information together here in this thread, and focusing on the basics of preparing to "get in contact" when the lines are down. Most of it will be web links to sources that are a lot better than I can do, but will include at least (in no ordained order, yet) Getting Started in understanding what you can do to prepare, radio waves, frequencies, operating bands & services (HF, VHF, HAM, CB, FRS, GMRS, Commercial, Government, etc), propagation (gets from point-to-point),terrain,distance, TX/RX - transmitters and receivers (a combination of the two are called "transceivers") modes of operation (analog and digital), power (operating sources and transmitting output), Antennas, feedlines (between antenna & radio), and support structures, Operating & Communicating (home, mobile, portable, and use of "repeaters") Thoughts / Sources on Regulatory Guidance (staying out of trouble, minimizing attention to yourself), Reliability, Sustainability, Efficiency, Economy, Resourcefulness ("Hints & Kinks" - how to do it cheaper and better) Sources and Vendors (places to purchase stuff) "I can Help !" (identfy your self (w/callsign if able), and any other useful info on how you can help folks) It will not be exhaustive, or even necessarily precise, but will be close enough to get a new-comer started on learning, and identifying folks who can help. It is not meant to act as a all-in-all, but rather as a starter of learning process and a pointer to other resources. Contributing OPS, please Title Your Post as top of this post (Antennas, Operations, etc and keep it informational as best we can). Lets try to do lengthy sidebar discussions in new threads, not this one. It is not limited to Ham Radio, although it will be a major contributor.1 point

Ok, so I know Feinstein's bill may get watered down and pass, or may not pass at all...but let's discuss what to do if it passes as is. For those of you who don't know what it entails, here is a good video describing what we know so far: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDglpt8hpyg So what do we do if it gets passed? Do we all meet up somewhere and discuss it? Do we just keep our discussion here? Or do we just grit our teeth and start the paperwork required to register our newly classified "Assault Weapons"? If it does pass I wouldn't mind meeting with some of you guys in the Nashville area to discuss what to do. By the way I'm not suggesting starting a terrorist cell that starts plotting the overthrow of the government. So as a group what do you guys think would be the best thing to do if this bill passes, (again, not your own personal actions but those that involve us as a group) if anything? Thanks, TheFinder1 point

Just a head's up for folks that are unaware. Walmart.com, of all places, carries Augason Farms LTS foods, and the shipping is free with orders over $50.00. You can combine any "home free" listed items to meet the $50.00 requirement. For me this has worked out cheaper than ordering directly from Augason Farms. I know money is tight for everyone these days, so I hope this will help some of you folks out.1 point

How about the lunch hour on a Saturday and get a group that would eclipse anything you would get on a work weekday? Good luck getting a bunch of gun owners to agree on a point man. But I would suggest we ask Hickok45 as opposed to some PR guy.1 point

The fact that no such data exist proved our point. And regarding your prior comment: " I can show you statistics, for example, that show the states with the highest gun ownership also have the highest violent crime rates." You realize that correlation does not equal causality. And this statement is looking at aggregate numbers not rates which would adjust for population differences. Based on this statement I like say that sttez with the highest auto ownership have the highest violent crime too. The problem is not with the data, it's the abuse of interpreting it. Most people don't have a stat background and those who wish to spin data know that.1 point

Personally if given my choice I'd rather see people sworn in with their hand over the constitution, but hey that's just me. Aside from that I'd also rather an individual be sworn in over the book of worship from the religion of their choice. I think a vow that ends in (so help you god) carries more weight to an individual when its said with their idea of god in mind. As far as tradition goes, it outdated IMO. No I'm not saying god is outdated, simply that the idea of one bible to rule them all is.1 point

So your saying that they shouldn't have the right to do that, or somehow that is the reason this country is going downhill? Sorry, don't buy it. Funny how everyone get's up in arms about the 2nd Amendment, but when the 1st doesn't suit them, it's all the other religions or someone else's fault. I may not like Obama's policies, but linking that to the downfall of congress or the reason we allow a Muslim or Hindu to be part of Congress is shortsided. I don't think either person who used a Koran or Hindu Book of Scriputres is any worse than those who used the bible. I suspect you may like them better than Feinstein or Pelosi if you really looked into it. Maybe not, but categorizing two specific people by their religion is no better than a Democrat saying guns kill people. They are both ignorant statements in my opinion.1 point

It is simple ecomonic... supply and demand. People that have been postponing buying guns, mags, ammo etc are now thinking their time is running out. Guns, mags, ammo are like stock. Buy them low and sell them high. A fool and his money are soon parted. The value of an object is what people will pay for it. John1 point

I beg to differ in a major way. They may not have the stopping power for up close engagements, unless there is a CNS hit, but at the same distance a person would use a scoped deer rifle a 22 is quite capable fo stopping a threat. A suppressed 22 engaging a threat at 200 yards is a very effective tool for protection. It would also very demoralizing to have no clue where to go to hide. Even without a suppressor a 22 can keep people at bay well beyond 200 yards. I can hit 1/2 sized steel targets at 200 yards 9 out of 10 times. That is a target that is 12" wide and 18" tall. A 22 is less intimidating to kids or women and provide a level of protection a pointy stick doesn't. I can guarantee if I start engaging a threat at 100 yards with any of my 22's they will not be a threat for very long. Here are several studies on the varsatility and lethality of the 22. http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=22+lethality&oq=22+lethality&gs_l=youtube-reduced.3..0l2j0i5.103962607.103965059.0.103965396.12.12.0.0.0.0.147.894.9j2.11.0...0.0...1ac.1.iLAFFo7B72s Dolomite1 point
