  1. I thought you guys would enjoy this. Here is a picture of the 2nd Amendment Foundation proudly displaying the check they had cut from the City of Chicago as a result of being awarded legal fees ($399,950 to be exact) they incurred to successfully fight and win the McDonald v. Chicago case in 2010. They posted it on their Twitter feed to kick off their public relations campaign in support of their new lawsuit against Illinois regarding restrictions in there nascent CCW law. Here's hoping they bring home another win, and another big fat check!

  6. Bike.... Ya may have missed the point; and i'll confess to not makin it too clear... The point is that three things contribute to incapacitating animals (...yes, and hoodlums...)... Bulllet placement, wound channel width, and penetration; ergo the "white hunter" point...   The "white hunters" needed for the great creatures they hunted, often at close range, to be incapacitated quickly... That was accomplished by a quick loss of blood, hitting of a vital organ (... heart...) and penetrating deeply to make the wound channel and blood loss very quick... The sad truth is that it's the same way with humans... God forbid than any of us would have to stop a hoodlum from hurting us or someone in our care....      Forgive us old grumps for being incredulous at the "under-penetration" thing; but it's true...   I happen to be in the camp that believes that there is plenty of snake oil baloney out there conjured up by the ammo folks to sell "premium self defense" rounds... Hollow point rounds have been around a long time, you could even buy them when i started reloading in the seventies; and, yes, they were available for both pistol and rifle calibers... The fact is that there is nothin new under the sun; but lots of folks seem to be enamoured by these "advanced" bullets... As others have opined, the Glasser slug has been the only real breakthru in self-defense ammo...   The "new, improved hollowpoints are simply old wine in new bottles... The problem with hollow points is that they can mushroom too quickly and do the "flesh wound" thing... Ya simply cannot deliver "flesh wounds" and efficiently stop whatever varmint ya are shootin at; be it four legged or two legged...    Michael Brown was shot 7 times if i remember right... He ran away from a cruiser, turned around, and almost made it back to the cruiser before he fell...   I'm willin to bet that he was shot with 40 caliber "magic bullet" hollowpoints...      By the way, "all situations ain't different"... Sadly, they are all the same --- you are tryin to stop the threat...  That may mean quickly stopping folks that may be high on dope or just plain mean is serious business... At the end of the day, that's what this is all about... Here's hopin that no one has to face that terrible task....    Forgive us for being insensitive... We were, however, trying to be truthful...   leroy

  8. One of my grandsons is getting an average of 50 to 60 hours a week now and has been for about a month. He asked one of his supervisors if they knew how long the overtime was gonna last and all the guy could say was he had no idea. My grandson called me gripping and bitching about all the overtime and how he had no time on weekends to do anything but rest up on Sunday for the next week. I told him, " Do you remember 4 years ago when you were working for all those Temp Services and barely scraping by and worried all the time about being able to pay your bills. I do because it was me loaning you a few bucks here and there to get you through the week. I finally had a friend of mine get you that job you have now and you have gotten three raises, a newer car, checking account and savings account and your own place by listening to ole Grandpaw. Now listen one more time to him. Shut up, quit your bitching and enjoy all the overtime you can get because over time was always a blessing to me and you will have plenty of time to spend the money when the overtime ends." He said , "That is why I always call you instead of Mom and Tommy Grandpaw." They agree with me all the time and you give me pep talks."...............................

  11. They aren't our of spec per say. Anderson uses a special anti friction coating and it is a bit thicker than standard anodizing. You may even find that the upper is rather fitting especially the rear tab. Once you wear down the coating in those areas it'll fit more like normal. Kinda like it starting tight as posed to loose.

  12. This is my shout-out to a group that did something quite unexpected and very nice for me.     Did you ever have a moment when you knew that you would be a rabid fan of a company?   I had one this afternoon with SLR Rifleworks  (they were suggested to me by our very own member - Lumberjack)     I had ordered one of their adjustable gas blocks for my TGO build -   http://slrrifleworks.com/index.php?route=product/product&filter_name=Sentry+7&product_id=128   ......and had a minor hiccup.    I first emailed them at ~10:20pm on a Sunday evening, and they replied THREE (3) minutes later  (!!), and promptly made an arrangement to my satisfaction.   *then* - two weeks later, my order was fulfilled yet again.....uh-oh....   Called them - explained the duplicate.   Their response - "no problem.  Why don't you just keep it and use it on your next build!  Send us pictures!"    This blew my mind. 110% all the way (which was plenty enough), and then an awesome gesture to a fellow who really needed the unexpected pick-up in low moments of life.   SO, I had read good reviews about the performance of their gas-blocks.  I have yet to install mine, and will report back as soon as the TGO 204Ruger is up and running; but I can attest to the solid character of the vendor. I will be an enduring customer and cheerleader for SLR.  Cant wait to get started on the next build too.   Bert

  20. New M&P40's can be had for less than $100 more than buds is charging for the police trade-ins. I can't imagine buying one of them when I could get all the new goodies S&W has changed on the M&P lineup in the past year for less than $100 more. In the .40 I will take an M&P over a G22 any day. That's coming from a huge Glock guy....

So, I do have a slight childhood draw to the Glocks for nostalgic reasons, but I handled the M&P in a store the other day and I was dumbfounded at how comfortable it was. But, the Gen 4 Glocks have the interchangeable back straps too. Guys, I think I'm going through an mid-20s post-divorce life crisis. Amazing what not being married can do for your bank account.

  25. Calling a Game warden and having them come out and show them what they did is a good idea. The Game Warden might put trail cams up in hopes of catching the bad guys at their game. They could face a list of criminal offenses and a Game Warden would love to get credit for a bust like that. Figure you could lose your life with a stunt like that so attempted murder could even be a charge. I promise you I would not let this ride if it were me and neither would any of my sons or grandsons that hunt their own land and have ladder stands up..............jmho

  27. That does happen with the "hand picked, best men available types" sometimes.   Back when I was working a parts sales job, a newly promoted GM started hiring some high pressure, fast talking sales types. During all this, he expressed his concerns that I would be able to do the job to his satisfaction, and be able to keep up with his new hires and greater expectations; indicating he thought I didn't have the "right stuff" for his new sales force. Also told me he was worried for my future there. Hmmm.   Within a few months, his new sales force began dropping out like flies on a hot stove. Our customer base didn't like the high pressure and "add on" tactactics he wanted employed. The expectation was that these new guys and methods would double our sales within 6 months.   When the numbers didn't appear, and the promised high commissions didn't come; the actual sellers moved on to where they could make money. The fast talking pushy guys soon got tired of actually working for a living and not sitting behind a desk and on a phone.   And several of the others had some really interesting sidelines going on.   One was on heroin from day one, and had been able to conceal it. But was found out when an account called in and complained that he'd offered to sell some of his wares to the employees there.   One was found to be coming in at night helping the loading crew to get this truck ready for the next day; making sure all his sales were "loaded correctly". Turned out he was taking merchandise out of the warehouse and selling on the side. He and a warehouse accomplice were met by Metro one evening and given some new short-term jewelry to wear.   My favorite was one of the "best" who was given an East Tennessee territory, a company credit card, a new truck, and a rented warehouse storage area to house product in as a satellite base.    The industrious young man immediately started padding the sales list by adding fake accounts and stocking those products in an adjacent unit he'd rented for himself.   So with the real accounts he had being placed on a net 10 basis, he was able to stockpile quite a bit and sell on a cash deal to many others. But you can only put off the past due accounts for so long.   He initially paid some of the real invoices and floated along like a pyramid scheme, but was finally so greedy that he stopped paying the real invoices and customers started receiving past due statements.   At the end, it was found that he had embezzled in the neighborhood of 50,000 in cash; and had a stash of parts worth more than that.   After the dust settled, the GM and I were having my evaluation meeting one evening. I causally asked if my style of sales and performance still worried him.   Probably wasn't the wisest thing to do, but I did.   He just looked at me a little harshly and laughed it off. We actually became pretty good friends after that.   So...the moral is that management isn't always completely right and totally competent.

  28.   It would be funny, except now these girls will grow up believing they should get equal pay for unequal work. Women are paid less, in general, only when you don't compare apples to apples. Women who have had the same number of uninterrupted years in the work force as a man in the same position not only make the same amount, they often make more. But the victim-creating feminists will never acknowledge that. They only want to compare women of the same age as men. Women of the same age often have taken time off to raise children. Women tend to value family higher than careers, on the average.    This kind of B.S. infuriates me, and not because children said a "dirty" word in a video. That could have been funny. But telling a child at that age that the world is against them is just pathetic.

  29.   We need to have a serious discussion in the country... if you are convicted of a felony-level violent crime as a juvenile, you should be tried as an adult and locked up. Period. Where you go doesn't matter - so long as you're not on the street. But I'm speechless when trying to rationalize why this was done in the juvenile system at age ~16. Speeding tickets? Sure, went through "juvenile court" for it myself at 16. Petty theft or truancy? Sure. Armed robbery? You're well beyond "juvenile" acts.   This shouldn't have happened because the perp should not have been free to begin with.   We have a new DA since Bottoms retired. He better do his job correctly!!

  31. First, thanks for posting this, I'm sure it has some valuable information for novice buyers of Mosin rifles. Having said that, I would offer a couple of observations of the author's assertions: 1. Buying a rifle with a good bore is typically a good idea, but doesn't always indicate how good it shoots.  There are plenty of these old rifles with less than good bores that are excellent shooters, and not all mirror bores shoot well, ammo selection probably has more to do with accuracy than bore condition.  There's absolutely nothing wrong with counterbored rifles, most of them shoot considerably better than the non-counterbored rifles, as crown problems are eliminated, and the armorers often selected rifles for counterboring from those with the best bores. 2. Looking for matching numbers is a complete waste of time unless you are very knowledgeable about these guns.  Upon refurbing the rifles, parts were mixed and matched without regards to "matching" parts from the rifles they tore down, part of the refurbishing process was to grind old numbers off and stamp, or electropencil "matching" numbers on.  Collectors can almost always spot minor differences between the fonts of the stamps, few non-collectors can.  Virtually 100% of the rifles being sold today do not have matching numbers, regardless of the claims of the sellers. 3. Hex receivers are no better, stronger, accurate or reliable than round receivers.  The change was made circa 1935-36 to make manufacturing cheaper and easier.  Wartime barrels and receivers often have rough tool marks on the exterior, this makes no difference in the function of the rifle. 4. Headspace is essentially never an issue, these rifles were built to military standards with huge tolerances.  There's nothing wrong with checking headspace, but most collectors and shooters who have a lot of experience with these report that they have never seen one with headspace problems. 5. Laminated stocks, markings, accessories, etc. have no bearing on function, if it's a shooter you want don't pay extra for any of that.  If you find an imperial era dragoon rifle in original condition though, pm me at once!

  34.   the difference between 800-1000 feet per second and 2500+ feet per second is significant in its own right -- more than doubled.   But that is not even a tenth of the story; since velocity is SQUARED for the energy equation.  800 squared is 640k.   2500 squared is 6250K.   10 times as much nearly.  Cut the mass in half (typical rifle bullet weights) and its "only" 5 times as much in the grand scheme.      On top of that antipersonnel rifle rounds are designed to flip and are generally quite long.  So the .22 caliber rifle makes a 1 inch hole because the bullet is flying sideways.  So it makes the large hole that people favor in their 45s.    Or, as others said already --- you can't really compare the two weapons.

  35.   +1. Some theaters across the country actually tried that a few years ago. It didn't last long. My local theater, which has finally gone digital, will actually stop the movie & put a "turn off you cell phones" message on the screen for 30 seconds if they see someone using one during the movie. If that doesn't work they come in & escort the cell phone user out of the theater. I've seen them do both at least once.

  39. There are plenty of folks ln the graveyard from bein shot with both 38 special and 9 mm rounds... That bein said, there is no "best round".... There is the "one you like" round... Shot placement trumps everything...   A 22 in the eye will kill ya just as dead as a 50 caliber... Pick out the one you like and dont believe the "fan boy" baloney about "stopping power"... There aint no magic rounds...     I carry a sig 238 380 all the time...  I like the "j" frame smiths loaded with the heavy 158 grain semiwadcutters as well as anything for CCW...     If ya are a bit more nervous get ya a glock 33 or a glock 27 like i do from time to time...  Plenty of rounds in case ya have to shoot it out with the local MS13 boys... I would be carryin a single stack 45 acp if i could find a "lightly used, lovingly cared for" one at a decent price...     Don't worry about the caliber, worry about marksmanship...   leroy

Of course it can be done. Most folks cant do it and the reason why is they don't train to do it.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk[/quote] Not to mention, when you're training, you're not likely suffering an adrenaline dump while in the midst of a possible life and death situation. I don't believe the average person would have the wherewithal to chamber a round if they were to be surprised by an attacker. By the time you got over the shock from what is happening, you could easily be a gonner.
