  1. Well I finished it yesterday. It's 1/8" thick 1095 carbon steel with a RC 60. The blade is ground very thin....good for a skinning knife I reckon. I etched it in Super Blue and bleach first to obtain the pitting and and generally the "damn that knife looks old look". When it comes out of 3 hours of the bleach it has about 1/8" of an inch of rust on it. It looks likes it's been rusting in a barn for 50 years. The you have to clean it all off and sand it smooth and when you get it where you want it I dipped into my regular etching solution for about 8 minutes and it turns it all black. Then you have to clean it off again and sand it again. I sanded the blade to 800 grit. You can see how shiny it actually came out. The blade grind is smooth as a baby's butt. Then a final sharpening and installed the handles and coated them with a coat of linseed oil and burnished them with leather.

  2. Since graycrait has been bitten by the mousegun flu, I thought I'd share some of my collection. These are mostly Zamak framed, but there are a few exceptions, such as the Sterlings. The ones in the first pic are all .22LR. The second pic is of the 5 variations of Ravens. The last pic is of assorted .25acp pistols. Sorry for the picture quality and the lighting. I'll take some pics of the higher quality Beretta, Astra, Bauer, Seecamp, Hi Standard and Colt pistols another day with better lighting. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

  6. So many if you know I'm dedicated to the AK and have little care for AR's, but I was wanting a 308 platform and nothing in the AK world got me too excited. Came across an Aero M5 receiver set and so started assembling an AR in 308. Since its not really an AR, I could justify it. [emoji6] Anyway here it is. Ambush Tactical fluted barrel 16", Larue grip, knock off brake, Ergo F93 stock, PSA BCG. Still waiting on a proper length gas tube and the UTG rail is quite impressive. I know the UTG name doesn't instill confidence, but options are slim on the 308 and this thing is fantastic. Especially for the price.

  8. I decided that I would go down to GT's to look at the M&P's and found a magnificent deal. Apparently an agency bought M&P 9mm's and decided they didn't like them. I got one that looked brand new with 3 magazines and night sights for about $430 OTD. It feels great and I will gets one range time on it tomorrow.

  12. Got my Smiff'n Western in Wednesday. I kinda like the look with the ridiculously huge sun shade on the scope, lol! It's an MA compliant model, so that stock will be replaced soon, and probably a drop-in trigger eventually. The handguards will also go bye-bye in time. Hoping to try it out Sunday after church!

  13.   We had our drills back in the early 80s but there wasn't much danger of being deployed overseas at the time. We did wonder if we would ever be deployed to Iran but a funny thing happed, the Iranians released the embassy hostages the very day Ronald Reagan was inagerated. Wonder why? There was some Central America stuff going on then but nothing that the U.S. would get "directly" involved in. I remember cheering on Iraq and Saddam back then to kick Irans ars in their war, funny how things can change. We did however deploy to Eglin Air Force base in Florida for 35 days, loaded all the APC's, M-60 Patton tanks on some huge cargo ship in the Savannah River and took busses to Eglin to unload. I only got to bathe 3 times in 35 days, I learned that you will reach a certain point of stink and you can't stink any worse after that. I called it "terminal stink". We loaded all the vehicals back on flatbed train cars for the return trip back to Stewart and we got to fly back on a 707, Arrow Air, the charter service the Army used then. It was a couple of years after that I believe when the 101st lost alot of soldiers when an Arrow Air flight crashed in Newfoundland.

  14. You should sight it in at the most common working distance you will be shooting. Is it a range rifle, hunting rifle, are you putting a scope on it? Usually its 100 or 200 yards and then you gather ballistic info for what you are shooting.

  16. I saw this article and I was sort of disappointed that Tennessee was not among the states who had filed amicus briefs. Apparently, the guy just elected governor in Maryland made some campaign promises he never intends to make good on regarding second amendment rights in his state. You might not think it impacts us as Tennesseans, that is until you want to take a nice long vacation with your family, in your car and have to spend time in one of these Communist leaning states and have to travel without your guns. Besides, the slippery slope of losing constitutional rights in one state impacts us all sooner or later. As was pointed out, perhaps the Tennessee AG sat this one out because he doesn't share our enthusiasm for the Second Amendment.

  17.   We got a new one now, surely he can't be as bad as Cooper was on gun stuff?   Matter of fact, impetus from AG in these states might have been significant factor in whether they joined in, and Cooper nixed it?   http://www.tn.gov/attorneygeneral/agbio.html   - OS

  20. IMNSHO, whatever else you do with a 10/22, the factory extractor should be changed out to a Volquartsen or similar, period. Almost all feeding probs/jams, "only liking certain ammo", etc.,  masquerade as this and that, but are actually simply due to the sub par design of the factory extractor not holding the round optimally all the way back to the ejector.   You can also file the factory one to the better angle, but it's still not as strong as the Volquartsen, MIM vs hardened A2 steel.   - OS

  24. Sub 9mm calibers are still useful IMO depending on the situation.  Your mindset may vary and I completely respect it, but in my eyes something like a little .22, .32, .380 etc are what I think of as like 90% guns... in the vast majority of cases, just HAVING a gun will be enough to save your bacon and they're small enough to carry even in an environment where a regular sidearm might be prohibitively big.  They're like pocket knives, just no reason not to have one on you if laws permit.   The other 10% of cases (both percentages are arbitrary of course) is the worst case scenario we all tend to prepare for just to cover all the bases: a determined attacker or someone who is under the influence.  Will it be enough in that situation? It could, but might not.  Even a service caliber might not.  Still, someone who WILL carry a mouse gun all the time (if the alternative is nothing at all, or only occasionally), so long as they're aware of the limitations, is still admirable.   Same rules apply for minimum desired penetration and shot placement though, so as it's been pointed out above, select ammo wisely and practice often!

  30. Unsers death was the most satisfying of them all IMO. He was a dirty cop who was IMO at least as responsible as anyone else for every death past the season 2-3 finale (where they executed the hot DEA chick). No spilt tears for him or for Juice the rat, but I am at least glad it was quick and he got to finish his pie. Gemma. Wish I could say she got what she deserved, but she didn't. It'll have to do I suppose. Jax is going down on the mayhem vote, Chibs will be Pres if he lasts long enough, but won't ever be an Irish King. Wrong fit all around. Nero is doomed, not sure how, but his character is a perpetual victim in the world of bad guys. At the end of the day, not much is going to change for SAMC except some of the faces.

  35. I match what the local PD carries. If not the caliber, I at least have the same make of round. If it's good enough for the police to protect themselves, it's good enough for me. I was told by other LEO's that legally it presents a better case in the unfortunate event it had to be used.

  38. I've tried everything, ridex, butter milk, rotton milk, porta potty blue junk (my stupid brother in law). Even bought every septic product on the market, even bought one can, 54 bucks and it did nothing. The only thing that has helped me is the extra water flow. Any one that has girls knows what I mean, I think they wrap the paper around their arms up to their elbows, and that paper does add up.

  42. After killing 2 deer on Saturday I almost decided to take off Sunday but decided to go. About 730 a 4 point comes out the ridge to about 30 while I managed to drill the only branch around him with a 300gr XTP. He hung around like nothing happened till I got reloaded then wandered into the brush. About an hour later this six came down the same trail and gave me a shot at redemption. The three of us took 6 deer and saw around 40, was a great weekend to be in the woods. I got quite a few looks when I headed home from the lease. Had this bobcat under me for a few minutes, very cool, never been that close to a live one. My boy was on cloud nine, already requested deer meat tacos for supper one night this week.

  45. I know this product has been mentioned many times around here, but I wanted to give it my own stamp of approval. When it comes to sharpening knives I'm truly "sharpening challenged". I've tried about every gadget out there and have spent hours behind flat stones with mediocre results. I thought I hit the jackpot when I bought a Chef's Choice 3-stage sharpener a few years back. I could actually get sharp kitchen knives. It wouldn't get anything razor sharp, but it sure was sharper than I've ever gotten a knife. After hearing about the Sharpmaker from you guys I decided to get one for myself for Xmas. I had a cheap S&W knife in my pocket that day when it arrived from UPS. I had previously "sharpened" the knife in the Chef's choice and it was crap. $10 knife and cheap steel just will not sharpen. This thing is better suited as a screwdriver. Anyways, I unbox the Sharpmaker, go through the motions as described in the manual, then laid the knife against my arm and shaved a patch of hair right off! OMG WTF just happened?!?!?? I turned around and sharpened some of my good knives and all now have razor edges. If you are as challenged as I am, I highly recommend you go buy a Sharpmaker today.
