  1. I know a good bit about straight razors. Golden Rule Cutlery-Chicago I would guess a US branded German Razor. A popular thing to do during the straight razor hay day. You can even find them with hardware store names on them..lol F.W.Engels-Solingen-Seems to be the nicest of the three. Looks to be in good shape nothing super fancy but nothing bad either Wade & Butcher-Sheffield-Has engraving on the blade. Nice old Sheffield blade. I would guess it to be around 1860's-1880's.. somewhere around in there. Looks like horn scales as well. Really nice razor. the most valuable of the group. A nice little set

  2. It reads like you are thinking a bushcraft/live off the land type scenario. I’m curious how we get there from where we are now. Living in the wilderness with only what you find and what you can fit in a backpack and maybe in a game cart is very difficult and has a TON of disadvantages. Even in the most catastrophic TEOTWAWKI scenario, long term survival (longer than 6 months) will be dependent upon if you can raise animals and grow a garden. In the 6-12 months prior to that (immediately following the “event”) when it’s complete and total anarchy with Mad Max roaming gangs (hypothetical) you will want nothing less than an AR/AK and high capacity pistol. But afterwards, you can’t roam forever, when you settle down or bug in, you can have anything and everything (gun wise) you can get. You will have to get a plot of land or work for someone who does. If you really want a 2-gun battery for that either a .357mag revolver/lever gun or .22 rifle/centerfire pistol would suffice I suppose. But you wouldn’t be limited to just 2 guns. Of course the optimum solution is to just live in the country right now, commute to work if you must, and practice growing a garden and raising chickens or whatever other animals you have room for. It doesn’t just happen it takes work and skills knowing what to do. Otherwise you’ll likely not make it past 12 months. Within 3-4 months all game and fish will be gone. You can’t live out of a backpack/off the land indefinitely.

  3. The only thing i have to say that’s not good is that I’ll repeat myself about it being non retention. While you are wearing it that means nothing because your hip presses the leather in and it has never moved on me at all - even riding my motorcycle (where you move around a lot). It’s not cracked or frayed in any way And it’s still as solid as when I bought it so for the money it’s awesome, but just that one thing should be noted because i have one situation that comes up occasionally with the retention issue. The issue is that when it’s off person the gun can easily fall out of the holster and the only time that matters is when I’m having a day that the shorts are too tight on my fat arse and I’m not feeling wearing the holster while driving my truck. I’ll unclip the holster and gun and set it in my (a) glovebox (b) console (c) between the seat or behind it. This means that if there are rough roads, a big jolt, sweeping turns, etc..... there is a chance (happened once) that the gun can slide out of the holster and you have to reach down and pick up a hot gun that has no trigger guard. I’m always careful so no chance of me grabbing it wrong, but if you had a passenger and they needed to get in the glovebox, console, etc and you trusted them and said “it’s under the gun and holster in the console just grab it out of there” then you may have someone reaching for a live trigger that is out of the holster. Yeah, it’s a long shot and sure it’s going to boil down to responsible handling, but in a world of idiot proofing things for people safety - it’s just something to be aware of. As far as real issues go, nothing to complain about. I have several months of use now and it’s just as nice as when i bought it. I expected leather wear and it hasn’t worn at all other than taking a comfortable shape.

  5. I bought a new orient komasu, or mako iii depending on where you buy it. Orient is owned by seiko, and the komasu is taking the place of the SKX. The sop in New York that I bought it from wanted a picture for their Facebook so I sent them this lol!!

  6. eBay holder for the Canik TP9SFx IWB - $39.95 shipped Any drawbacks - not really but “because Canik” you’ll get a mark on the holster from the extended slide release on this model. Retention is not click retention, just friction. It fits, it’s medium grade quality compared to “super awesome custom everything”. The leather is the same you’ll find on $200 - $300 saddlebags on a motorcycle. Not super cheap, not super awesome. The optical fits perfectly, no issues there. For the money it’s a win. You can spend more, you can get more. In the under $40 class of IWB with optical you are way ahead of the game with this one. In racing we say how fast you wanna go, how much money you wanna spend? This would be a time-slip you didn’t expect to get for what you paid. Surprisingly decent. (Clickable thumbs)

  7. I’m going to stick to a narrow definition about what your asking and just talk about a combo firearm. If I were going to go that route, then I wouldn’t go with a rifle/rifle, I’d go rifle/shotgun and I’d select a .22/12 ga. The lowly 12ga shotgun will take any beast in North America, provided you have the right ammunition, the skill and the bravery. Anything from a rabbit to a grizzly bear. The .22 is perfect for small game. All that being said, it’s a poor choice for a firefight or for long range. The old Savage 24 were excellent quality guns. Latter on Savage brought out an updated model, called the 42. I believe Remington also imported a combo made in Turkey and badged as a Remington. Chiappa makes a version of the old Air Force Survival rifle in .22/12 ga that the Air Force used. https://www.chiappafirearms.com/product.php?id=213

  11. It appears to me Vortex claims to have an excellent warranty. I have no information on their customer support other that they have responded quickly when I have emailed them with a question. So it appears you shouldn’t have to pay to replace it. The pricing right now is crazy.

  12. For a rifle I'll go with my M1A Scout/Squad. Its a good do it all rifle. Handgun, well as much as I love my 1911s, I'd probably go with a high cap 9mm just for ammo availability. Then there would be a good .22 handgun in my pack for small game and throw in a suppressor for keeping a low profile.

  13. I agree that a handgun is best because it can be carried at all times, but for most people needing a long arm for defensive purposes, I think a shotgun is best. While I understand the attractiveness of recommending a battle rifle like the AR-10, it requires a reasonable amount of training to use an AR-10 effectively at close quarters, and when you start talking about shooting people at ranges of many hundreds of yards, you're no longer talking about self defense.

  14. I have had several family and friends asking about owning their first firearms due to the recent riots, and money is usually a factor. My break down for them is usually this: if you're a decent shot or willing to train first buy a good used handgun and a good holster (m&p, glock, Springfield,..etc brands that are common and reliable even after heavy use). A handgun can be kept on you at all times, you have two free hands, and if you need to be out for whatever reason its concealable. Next get a decent shotgun like a mossberg 500. My reasoning is that first, they can be bought used for 300 bucks or less. Second, they are always gonna go bang even with a beating, and lastly they're not the best shots, and its a shotgun it's a one-and-done if you give a potential violent attacker a load of 00 to the chest. When asked what caliber/guage I usually say. "Whatever you can find the most of" and leave it at that. I have found most newbies will pay 450 for a used glock 17, but nearly throw up at the thought of paying 600 for a new one. I just try to keep them away from Taurus.

  22. I first picked it up at the stockyards decades ago. It basically means someone who buys something with full intent on resale. After doing shows for so many years i can pick out the veterans at it. More a cutthroat crew to deal with than at the stockyards.

  26. To me it sounds like the case wasn’t sized enough and they are jamming in the chamber. Pull the barrel and drop the round that doesn’t feed in and see if it drops flush into the chamber. My most recent 1911 has a tighter chamber than the rest of them and I would occasionally get the same jam. I had to lower my sizing die down a little bit further to get them to chamber 100%. This is all based on that I’m assuming your shooting reloads.

  29. Update: I repurposed this to carry my Elite SC so I cut off an inch and a half as well as curved the side that goes on the leg when you bend. Made a nice difference and is proving to be a comfortable holster. Also didn’t realize how thick the Kydex was until I compared it to another holster (factory Canik Elite SC holster). I think for what I paid I did well.

  30. Everything is application driven so it depends on what we are surviving. “Survival” to me implies some form of civil unrest. If “Survival” means traipsing around out in the wild, disregard my response; I will not be doing that. But none of those, an AR10 and a full-size M&P would be my choice. Rifle: The AR10 because it can do it all. From close quarter combat to 1000-yard shots. Handgun: The full-size M&P in either 40S&W or 9mm for quality and capacity. (.40S&W for me )

  32. I read a study once, it focused on the Eastern Seaboard, if the migration begins, by foot, 95% of them will die before coming over the Cumberland Plateau. The Appalachian Mountains will be very dangerous. That is of course not counting the existing population. Honestly I think that most urbanites will be too busy looting to worry about survival. History has shown this time and time again. It is my plan to bug in for a month minimum in my home. Defend and survive. Depending on the disaster, either 90% of the population will have ended themselves in that month, or order will be restored.
