  1. Vet them through buyer/seller feedback here on TGO. Never meet after dark, if you can at all avoid it. Always meet at a well populated, well trafficked location. Most police stations and sheriff's departments are perfectly fine with you using their parking lot for this. Some even have designated parking spots FOR online sales handoffs. Discuss with the buyer/selller ahead of time if anyone else will be present so that there are no surprises. GO ARMED. Be ready to use it if you have to. Don't leave it in the car, in the glovebox. Keep it on you. LISTEN TO YOUR GUT INSTINCTS. Be willing to drive away if ANYTHING feels off about the setting or the situation at all. The possibility of resulting negative feedback or hurt feelings are completely inconsequential. Your instincts exist for a reason, so trust them. And one last tactic: I have, in the past, gone to a rendezvous and taken my own backup with me. Another person who I knew I could trust to handle the situation if it went sideways. They were armed and as skilled or more so than I am. I circled the lot and let them out nearby so that they could monitor and quickly respond if things got ugly, but far enough away from the rendezvous point that they weren't easily spotted. Basically, learn to think like a predator. Think like a bad guy. Think about what you would do if you were up to no good, and then think about how to circumvent that.

  2. I forgot one more important point: 7. Never get in their car. Never let them get into your car. If it's cold, rainy, sweltering hot or otherwise ####ty weather outside, it should make for a quick transaction. Dr. William Aprill of Aprill Risk Consulting used to say that you had to know ahead of time what lines you weren't going to cross so that you knew when to start fighting. For him, being put into another car or having someone enter his car was where the line was drawn. I agree with him 100%.

  4. I've been doing this work for 40 years; the longer I do it the less it seems I know. Here is a fair "10,000 foot overview": https://www.health.com/condition/depression/8-million-americans-psychological-distress I have never seen anything affect our collective mental health like COVID. People who were minimally functioning and got through the day by going to work, coming home, and going out in public went into two years of isolation. The levels of anxiety and depression skyrocketed. Two years of massive life changes challenged everyone's perception of life, normalcy, and safety. Add political unrest , family strife, etc. and we have a greater level of triggering events with fewer and safe places to express oneself For many people "family" is not safe anymore.. People who were not functioning well got worse, many who thought they were "well" were found to be "unwell." Substance abuse has also reached new and scary levels during the pandemic. And we are all trying to figure out what "normal" is again. The one good thing that happened during COVID was that insurance started paying for telehealth which it never did before. Allowing people to do therapy from home has been a help to all. At this point I still do more therapy online than FTF. On the other hand, there is not enough mental health available. In the Nashville area therapist wait time is 2 - 4 months; 6 - 8 for a psychiatrist for medications. As a culture we still do not make it easy for others to seek help; many are stigmatized by friends or family to seek help. While some will take a blood pressure medication when their PCP tells them, if a PCP suggests a medication for depression others will respond by saying "I'm not crazy." Please do not misunderstand my thoughts: I am not saying I am "right" or have all the answers. I'm just trying to do the best I can with every client, and most every client is more challenging now than they were in 2019. And at the end of the day, it's a matter of personal will. How many therapists does it take to change a light bulb? Only one, but the light bulb really has to want to change . . .

  8. I like any and every 2A win, even if they are limited or temporary. Judge issues an injunction declaring the dubious parts of the CA Roster unconstitutional. https://bearingarms.com/camedwards/2023/03/20/federal-judge-issues-injunction-against-ca-microstamping-requirement-and-other-aspects-of-unsafe-handguns-act-n68616 What's the roster you ask (short version): 22 years ago the gun grabbers took the long play approach toward a defacto ban by preventing any newly made guns from entering CA by adding unreasonable requirements to be 'safe'. This left only older legacy models 'certified', with them counting on the manufactures sunseting models in-favor of newer 'unsafe' (in the eyes of gun grabbers) designs. They did not count on makers knowing where their bread gets buttered, keeping lines of legacy guns available for sale in CA. One of the reasons why Gen 3 Glocks are still made among other things.

  10. I totally agree. In our practice you only make it to the med provider only after it becomes clear that CBT is not able to address the condition. Folks that come to us wanting meds only are disappointed.

  12. Treats symptoms and have negative mental side effects that are more often than not worse than the symptom. In no way do they treat casualty or give usable coping skills. Our society has absolutely lost all ability to cope with difficulty/conflict (normal life) and it often festers into what we are seeing. Everyone wants a pill fix and not a work/effort/overcome solution. While "get over it" is extreme, it is far closer to a solution than medication. Pills only help natural chemical imbalances. Very few cases are natural chemical imbalance. Most are cognitive behavioral imbalances.

  15. I am not a mental health professional, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn last night. What I do have are some doubts about this statement. Over the last 30 years or so we have dramatically destigmatized mental health problems, and as a society are far more accommodating of them than we ever have been in the past. During that time, it seems as if the general mental health of folks has only declined. We’re not getting any better the more options and availability of treatment that there is. We’re only getting worse, much worse. On some level, I wonder if we’re simply getting more of what we accommodate and accept? i’m not calling in to question your expertise or credentials, simply making statements of generalities based upon my observations. What I don’t think is in question at all is that as a society we are obviously doing something very, very wrong.

  17. Gun values are in general what the market will bare at a particular point in time and a honest true evaluation of the condition of the gun(s). I agree with with what people have already said use Gunbroker, books, and etc. However, you must consider this: Gun values and what you can get are two different view points that in my experience novice people just do not think through. Now as far as what you can get for your gun(s) will depend upon your patience, targeted market, your evaluation, and medium of advertising in my judgement. Also, as a seller complying with law is a given, and make sure your friend follows, and is aware of prohibited buyers. There are some resources on this site to read up on.

  20. I use my credit card instead of my debit card every chance I get. If I had my way I'd never use my debit card. IMHO, it's way better to cancel my credit card and get a refund for those charges than for a thief to drain my checking account and me have to wait for that to be reversed.

  21. FTF. Knoxville area. Have a trailer and might be able to meet or deliver. Two Ridgid tool boxes. Orange. Bought several years ago at Home Depot and never used. They are still in the cardboard packaging. Check HD’s website for prices. I’ll take $400 for the 48”, and $500 for the 60”. Prices are fair and firm.

  25. Research done by the same people who did the jab research. All in good fun. Medication should be a necessary second only option. IMO. Stats show clearly Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is the only solution to the positive across the board by a wide margin. Not discounting medications, but psychological and behavioral are different applications. One is medicinally approached and the other is cognitively approached. There is a direct correlation between moving our culture from a behavioral approach to medicinal approach over the last 30-40 years. It has not been good. The medicinal approach failed miserably and is usually viable only because CBT is added in. It's not all one or the other, but it is definitely one way before the other. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3584580/

  26. I won't speak for Greg, but I don't think he was talking about "gender identity" specifically as a topic, but rather the types of things that trigger people into completely absurd emotional responses.
    1 point
  27. I believe we’re envisioning two different things when speaking of mental wellness. Gender identity is not a concern of mine. Live and let live as far as I’m concerned. I’m speaking about issues that actually prevent an individual from being a stable, functioning member of society.

  28. I guess I lean more toward this line of thinking. We as a country have had it too easy for too long. I don’t believe many folks in Namibia or The Congo worry much about which bathroom to use or micro aggressions. Cold hearted, yes, but logically, a good old fashioned famine would go a long way into curing problems many Americans feel they have today.
    1 point
  29. I respectfully disagree. Based on my experience, I see more of what @Chucktshoes points out. I feel American society is more accommodating toward mental disorders than ever before. I also see the problem growing as it is becoming more normalized. Maybe "sucking it up" isn't the answer, but whatever is causing it to grow so fast also isn't the answer.

  30. TGO is the ONLY way I'd arrange to meet a stranger to buy or sell a gun. If there's not a lot of witnesses, I get leery when I see trash in the parking lot, oil stains at EVERY parking spot, and if the MSRP on all the cars looks lower than average.

  32. As a licensed mental health therapist the severity of what my clients bring in as issues now compared to 10 years ago is startling. As a culture we tend to have this "just get over it" attitude that does not always understand and appreciate the experiences of others.

  37. Very sorry this happened, and I pray the bentleman is ok. However, my pitiful size/weight recognition skills wonder if that 2000# assessment is a wee bit off. I have one that appears to be about that size. It's 56 x 48 and was just under 1000 #. My brotherinlaw and I moved it off an open trailer and sat it up safely. But we had rollers, a hydrolic lift jack and blocks to sit it on. All we had to do was push and shove to get it placed on the blocks. That was 20 years ago though. I wouldn't even think of trying to move it now. Too old, too slow, and way too paranoid of getting hurt again.

  40. Wife is taking good care of me(retried nurse), about the most stressful thing she allows me is to take a rollerwalker to the bathroom about 20' away. Saw the PT person that does the first round of evaluations yesterday and she said I'm set for twice week starting this week. See my regular doctor early tomorrow, not sure why. Will be on a remote heart monitor another 9 days and see the heart doctor in 2 weeks. By then I hope I know something. My exercise till I hear back from PT is trying to type using my left hand and TV. Thanks all.

  43. A couple of things to think about: The intent of this thread was not to start a cat fight about who is who, what their pronouns are, nor to assess the morality of society in general. The answer to the " morality of society in general " is obvious... It stinks. Simple observation teaches that fact. it was to point out the grievous error in judgement that McNally ( a politician ) made in this episode and to prognosticate on the political fallout. These are two separate issues. I'ma thinkin he may be done, regardless of his " pronouns n proclivities ". His problem is self created. He lives in a world where folks are watching for any error or excuse to remove or gain advantage over their opposition. McNally has allowed a grievous one. He is a " public figure ", and can be worn out by his enemies; political and otherwise, in the public court of opinion. The second issue is one of " legislating morality "... As others have opened; it can't be done. That said, every citizen of this state has to recognize that the " grooming n hitting on kids thing " is dead on arrival here in this state, and most everywhere else I know of. It is the responsibility of parents to be " parents ". It is the responsibility of those who interact with kids ( both teachers and other adults ) to keep their hands off them in any way that is " suggestive". It's that simple. " Hands off " means no drag shows open to kids, no books, no " alternate literature " in textbooks n school libraries ", no " show n tell ", etc; you get the picture. You ( and me, and " ...them ... priests, preachers, teachers, librarians, neighbors, kinfolk, polititians, etc." ), as outsides, should keep your conduct non suggestive and pure. Failure to do so is dangerous to your career, your overall physical condition, and even your life here in Tennessee. The " libertarian " ideal doesn't apply to kids; it applies to adult citizens. Children are put in the care of their families, they are not " freeborn citizens of the world ". Failure to respect this truth can be very dangerous on lotsa levels in most every place I've ever been. There is no " libertarian utopia ", where you are free to do whatever you want, free of rules n boundaries. Societies and gubts don't work that way. Finally, my apologies to Brother GrayFox; I couldn't get the quoted text box to go away in this post. Leroy...

  44. I just found out that Girsan is now making a shorter Detective version of their Hi-Power clone. Called the MC P35 PI. It will come in several different colors and include rail and optics ready versions. MSRP is expected to be in the $560-ish area. They're just starting to be available now. Rumor has it that there's an alloy frame version in the works. 46. I feel like a lot of people either disregard, discount, or do not adequately appreciate the Sig P938 pistols. I have had mine for..... 6 years? I've never had a single malfunction or other issue. Maybe its a "1911 style" pistol and so I'm being to nit picky since everyone loves a good 1911 but I see people selling P938's all the time and it always seems like they are slow to be picked up. Conversely everyone nowadays seems to be wanting a SigP365 or some such "new gun." No offense to those new polymers but the P938 with extended mags is a great pocket pistol with no printing even in athletic shorts.
