The finger pointing, blame game, speculation and anti-gun theme is all a result of people not willing to face the harsh reality that evil exists, and there is little to nothing we can do as a society to prevent or stop it. The only way evil can be mitigated is at the individual level. Life is not safe, and is terminal by design. That is scary to folks, and is illustrated dramatically when something like the CT shooting happens. The fact is, we are never safe no matter where we are. Someone bent on destruction will most likely achieve their goal if they planned properly and even with all the preparedness in the world, you may still lose. Do what you can to stay protected, but accept that risk will never, ever be mitigated to zero. That is a very scary realization to the average person. The answer to the question people keep asking is simple: "How can something like this happen?" "Because evil does exist."

If you have to explain, they wouldn't understand.  I'm far beyond worrying about people's opinion of me.  And no, I didn't feel like a leper.  I felt fine.

All is not lost. Unplug for a minute and take your mind off things;     Where did "Piss Poor" come from? Interesting history.They used to use urine to tan animal skins, so families used to all pee in a pot.   And then once it was full it was taken and sold to the tannery...  if you had to do this to survive you were "Piss Poor". But worse than that were the really poor folk who couldn't even afford to buy a pot...They "didn't have a pot to piss in" and were the lowest of the low.   The next time you are washing your hands and complain because the water temperature  Isn't just how you like it, think about how things used to be. Here are some facts about the 1500's   Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May, and they still smelled pretty good by June.. However, since they were starting to smell, brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor. Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married. Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, Then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children.  Last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying, "Don't throw the baby out with the bath water!" Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw-piled high, with no wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the cats and other small animals (mice, bugs) lived in the roof.  When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof.. Hence the saying, "It's raining cats and dogs."   There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house. This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings could mess up your nice clean bed. Hence, a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded some protection. That's how canopy beds came into existence.   The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt.  Hence the saying, "Dirt poor." The wealthy had slate floors that would get slippery in the winter when wet, so they spread thresh (straw) on the floor to help keep their footing.  As the winter wore on, they added more thresh until, when you opened the door, it would all start slipping outside. A piece of wood was placed in the entrance-way.  Hence: a thresh hold.   (Getting quite an education, aren't you?) In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire.  Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day. Sometimes stew had food in it that had been there for quite a while.  Hence the rhyme:“Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old." Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special.  When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man could, "bring home the bacon."  They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around and chew the fat.   Those with money had plates made of pewter.  Food with high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food,causing lead poisoning death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous.   Bread was divided according to status.  Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests got the top, or the upper crust.   Lead cups were used to drink ale or whisky. The combination would sometimes knock the imbibers out for a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial.  They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up. Hence the custom; “holding a wake."   England is old and small and the local folks started running out of places to bury people.  So they would dig up coffins and would take the bones to a bone-house, and reuse the grave.  When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying people alive.  So they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the graveyard shift) to listen for the bell; thus, someone could be, â€œsaved by the bell" or was "considered a dead ringer."  And that's the truth. Now, whoever said history was boring!!!   So get out there and educate someone!   Share these facts with a friend. Inside every older person is a younger person wondering,  "What the heck happened?" We'll be friends until we are old and senile.  Then we'll be new friends.   Smile, it gives your face something to do!

I overheard a conversation at a local restaurant today between a customer and a server. Customer was very anti-gun and was almost run out the door by the whole room of people. He quickly finished his meal and left. Spewing something about a BB gun being enough for him and that people should just call the police. I actually kinda felt proud to be among like-minded individuals. God bless Tennessee!

  So you are ok with gun control as long a it doesn't affect you?   You are silly to think that if they limit one set of "evil" guns then they will stop there. They will continue to find other "evil" guns to ban. Heck in some of the more liberal areas pellet rifles are outlawed because they are too powerful.   If you willing give up ANY firearm rights you will eventually be stuck holding a butter knife for your defense. As much as I depise the WBC, I find it rather ironic that Anonymous - a group that claims to fight for freedom of speech - is now attempting to quiet the members of WBC.

There are a few Patriots left, but they aren’t discussing how to overthrow our government. Those trying to overthrow or destroy our government would know who we were because we would be the ones they would be facing when they decided to take up arms against Americans. “We” are our “Government” and any unlawful acts against us would not end well for the enemy combatants. Because of our “government” (our Constitution and the Legislative, Judicial, and Executive branches) someone like Hussein or Hitler can’t gain power. If our “government” collapses we will lose everything including our freedom. I don’t like Obama being in office any better than anyone else, but it isn’t the end of our country. I have no doubt that he will pull out all the stops on gun control. I think he was going to do it anyway, but he will certainly manipulate this tragedy for his political gain. We have to put our trust in our elected officials to do what’s right. Our Supreme Court has recently ruled that you have a right to own arms under the 2nd amendment. They have left the bearing of arms laws up to the states. Obama can’t change that. Yes, he will try to ban hi-capacity magazines and he will probably get that done. He will try to ban AR’s; I doubt he will get that done. We will be going through some though gun legislation, but no one can ignore the Heller and McDonald decisions. Legislation may be passed that will have to make its way through the courts; but that is what we will have to do.

Thank you Governor for not following the anti-gun crowd. Cool heads need to prevail. Unlike the talking heads in the media and  so called journalists.   First of all, you, me, our neighbors had nothing to do with this terrible act. Our hearts and prayers are with the families. But yet the anti-gun crown wants us to give up our rights.  They say no one "needs an AR-15, or a AK or semi-auto hand guns.   Well excuse me, we have a bill of "rights" not a bill of "needs". The bill includes the 2nd amendment along with freedom of speech and property rights. These are individual rights that are not up for "national discussion" as Obama and the talking heads in the media say. No law on the books would have stopped this crime.   Last time I looked, murder was illegal no matter what weapon is used.   Write you Senators and Congressmen and tell them to stand strong. Defend the Constitution and the bill of rights. Don't let them temporary politicians destroy our way of life.  :usa:

Personally, I don't think that it's a good idea to debate such things in the heat of the moment particulalrly with the leftist media and their tactics. America has a short attention span, so why jump in the fray?

There are details lacking in this story.  One would hope that he was not arrested merely on the basis of what he said, but on the basis of what he admitted to when questioned by the police.  Threatening statements made on Facebook certainly should be grounds to question someone, though.

This is no were near severe enough. The beating should just be the beginning of what should happen to this idiot. My emotions are very high about this, I have 2 nephews and a niece in that age range and both sisters are teachers....

I haven't watched 1 second of news on this story after the 2-3 minutes I saw mid day on Friday. Only thing we've watched this weekend was some Dinosaur Train, Veggie Tales, and the Elf on a Shelf Story from the other night. Well Guys.....I don't think the anti-gunners really care who or how many are killed. They just ride every possible excuse to push the disarming of America. They have to disarm the country before they can put us in bondage.

By myself or with my wife I'd keep my weapon holstered. If I have my three year old holding my hand or I'm carrying my baby and someone comes at me, the gun is coming out and it's up to him of I use it.

With the way things are going, economy in the toilet and about to flush, gun control coming, whole world going to hell in a handbasket, I am beginning to hope the Mayans were right.

The people I work with have no idea I'm into guns, I have no idea as to their personal views either, quite frankly I'm perfectly happy with the arrangement. Only a few non family members know I'm all that into guns and most of my extended family has no idea.

We don't need a bill allowing teachers to carry, we need a bill that allows all HCP holder to carry in schools and colleges.

Everyone is too emotional to have a rational discussion now. It's better to wait until more time passes and more facts come out. For example, nearly every mass shooter has been taking prescription drugs that can have violent side effects.  The Aurora shooter was taking Vicodin. Eventually, we'll learn that this kid was also on some mood altering drug. Really? Why do people think this is a good weapon for this scenario? It's pretty, sure, but it's a boat anchor that barks waaaaay too loud for what he uses it for. Any python fans out there, ask yourself one thing, Would you REALLY want to touch that thing off inside? Goodbye hearing. Not to mention reloads suck. Unless you're Jerry Miculek you're toast. I'd rather have a solid 22 like a Ruger than the python. My personal choice would be a Glock 19 with a lone wolf barrel and a heavy, subsonic cast bullet. Low recoil, low noise. Which by the way, I have two of. Penetration of a slow moving heavy cast bullet is amazing and more than enough turn a brain stem into catfish chum. Much cheaper to produce and takes up less space. If you ask me, Carl is the sharpest tool in the shed, gun wise. A suppressed browning hi power. While I question the longevity of a suppressor made form a softball bat, it would certainly work. With a low volume of fire and vigilant maintenance it would work quite well.

I originally purchased the book when it was first released. I re-read it a couple of months ago.   Like Orwell's1984...it was prescient in it's nature...just a few years off.   The first 100 or so pages are incredible in detailing the destruction of our Constitutionally Protected God Given Rights.   Definitely worth the time. It should actually be mandatory reading  for any serious member of the "Gun Culture". :up:

  Well, to opine a contrary notion to that, it might only take about 1/300th of the population to make this kind of quick um, "change". Which would be a Million Man March of a different ilk. :)   Maybe just a million still ambulatory old farts, who may have a different mindset about just what they have left to lose, and are certainly the group that would consider themselves the most stalwart patriots. This (so far) fantasy, of course, would all depend on just what the roughly 2.3 times more active military and reserves combined would really do.   Then again, there's the old as war itself guerrilla tactic. A million dedicated folks around he country in groups of 10-20 could really have an impact doing various ... stuff. Especially if the economy keeps sliding, and federal resources slide with it.   I do believe the Revolutionary War was won with something around that 1/300th of the population taking up arms. Or less, I disremember the estimates I've read. And against even greater disparity in forces, counting the American Loyalists, Germans, and injuns.   Soon as the first 999,999 commit, I may jump right in there myself. ;)   - OS

You cannot legislate morality. The sickness that this country suffers from is immune to anything the government can do. WE THE PEOPLE must deal with it or it will be our downfall. God help us.

You will get all kinds of guesses/speculation/interpretations when you ask about the use or threating the use of deadly force.   My opinion (which means nothing) is that the threat of force has a much lower level of justification than the use of force. If someone approaches me in a threatening manner I will draw my weapon. However, that doesn’t mean a scary looking guy asking for money or a cigarette. It would be more along the lines of me walking away from someone and them running at me or grabbing me.   However, if you ever pull your weapon you better be on the phone with the cops right then, right that minute, not after you drive home and think about it. The first caller is the complainant the second caller is the suspect.   Whether or not you were justified in what you did will first be determined by the responding Officers. If they agree you were in danger they will let you go. (Talking about you pulling your gun, not killing someone) If they don’t agree it then goes to the DA and then a Judge or Jury.   If you make the decision to pull the trigger it’s all on you. There are no hard and fast rules, short of someone threatening you with a deadly weapon or shooting at you. Everything comes into play then. No one cares what you were thinking or whether or not you were scared; they only care what a reasonable person would think or do. My own personal test is “Would a reasonable person believe I am in fear of death or great bodily harm?”   So many things come into play in deciding if you were justified. You will be judged by people that have weeks if not months to think about and decide if what you did was right.   As a Police Officer we had access to the States Attorney for our County. We had a pretty good idea of what he would do, without having a specific case to look at. In a perfect world citizens would have that same kind of access in their counties so they would know the feelings of the DA.   One of the Attorneys here is going to have a class on this. (Need a link) That would be a great source of information. Unfortunately when it comes to the use of deadly force or what you should do after shooting, Defense Attorneys and District Attorneys are going to have differing opinions. You need to hear both sides and make informed decisions as you are the only one that is going to be held reasonable for your actions. I’m not aware if County DA’s make themselves or someone from their office available for this kind of information.
