  1. Without knowing the entire story behind everything going on, nor caring to, I personally started feeling like his posts were going towards "everything I say is right, and if you disagree, you're wrong" kind of thing.   As far as knowing the specifics of whatever happened, this is a privately owned board and I don't think we have a right to know anything that happens on the backend.

  6.   These are not normal operation.  You should not have it at half cocked because it is a full cocked safety on gun.  I have never had mine at half cocked and loaded; maybe when cleaning it but it was unloaded then.   Yes, it WILL drop the hammer from 1/2 cock & trigger pull.  I just checked mine. Dunno if it has enough oomph to fire, or if it is blocked.  I can try to fire it next week from that state if people really care that much.   But why would it ever be at 1/2 ???   Yes, it DOES strip a round off the mag if you mess with the slide.  Its really simple.  Rack it one time (or close the slide on a fresh mag), put the safety on, and it will work. Mess with it, and it may not.  Sometimes dropping the mag when not empty strips a round and both mag and loose round fall out of it.  This is normally a non-issue; if you did a tactical reload it might lose you a round on the removed mag.   This has never interfered with operation for me.  Not once.  But I shoot it empty and reload from there....   The actually aggravating issue is that the grips like to come unscrewed when shooting.  Locktite solves that one, but it should not need it.   Patton -- it may be visually difficult to see if the safety is on but it has a positive click into place and can easily be mechanically verified (take it off, put it back on, feel the click, its safe).  I have not ever had it slip into "fire" while carrying over a long time -- had one since the first shipment hit the stores and carried it not long after that (verification process).   I usually ignore safeties but on a cocked pistol, I take it seriously.   I have tested it enough and cannot find a safety failure condition, nor have I had one.  It does its job.   BTW I see you are near chatt... if you are down this way you can shoot mine to test it out if you like.   Same for ladyhay if practical tn is a big place...

  9. Most people want something powerful, reliable, and intimidating for their first handgun.  This is a bad idea for a LOT of reasons.  Your first handgun should always be a .22lr.   1)  Bad habits learned with your first handgun are very difficult to un-learn.  Flinching, bad hand position, anticipating recoil, and lots of other bad habits are usually the result of buying a full-power handgun first. 2)  Accuracy and good habits are formed with practice.  The best shooters in the world go through thousands of rounds each MONTH!  While I'm not suggesting that every shooter needs to do this, I am saying that a new shooter needs to be prepared to go through more than a couple of boxes and  to learn to shoot properly.  That costs money.  You are much less likely to develop 'wallet-flinch' when buying .22 than when buying 9mm.  And you are more likely to be willing to buy a decent amount of ammo, rather than just a box or two. 3)  If you are asking what gun to get, it means that you really don't yet know what you like or dislike.  Buy the .22 first, and that will let you develop opinions based on experience.  There is a reason that there are hundreds of handgun models on the market.  Not everyone likes the same things.  Use a .22 to learn at a much lower cost. 4)  Get training.  Sure, I know that you and your buddies have been reducing beer cans to aluminum trash for years.  Not even close to being useful.  You've learned bad habits.  Get a basic pistol course.  Pretend that you've never held a pistol before so that you'll actually listen.  Women usually do better than men in basic pistol courses because they don't ASSUME that they know anything.  Training with a .22 is every bit as useful as training with a larger caliber. 5)  Repeat #2 above.  I no longer compete.  But I still go through over 1000rds of .22 and 9mm each month to keep my skills from deteriorating too fast.  I shoot mostly .22 as you use the exact same skills for less than a fourth of the cost. 6)  There is almost nothing that you can do with a larger caliber that you can't do with a .22.  Aside from hunting larger critters, the .22 is a remarkably versatile round.  And several hits with a .22 are much more useful for self-defense than any number of misses.  A .22 is used for home defense about as often as all other calibers combined. 7)  You never outgrow a .22.  If you decide to pass on the shooting sport to friends and family, you will want a .22 to get them started.   Lastly, buy quality.  Cheap guns wear out more quickly and aren't as accurate or reliable.  There are a lot of choices for quality, reliable, and accurate .22 pistols in the $300 range.

  12. I debated between these two pistols as well. I shot a M&P 22 at the range and liked it. I held the SR22 at the store and liked it. My 9 yr old son was the deciding factor. The SR22 was a perfect size and fit. After taking it to the range and shooting it I am very happy with the decision. I have only had 2 FTF and that was some old questionable federal laying around for years. Myself, son and wife have put 1000 + through it and enjoy it very much.

  13.   I store all my whiskey at room temp, but actually prefer it chilled so I use mine quite often. Another good item to acquire for the whiskey aficionado are some of these...   http://www.amazon.com/Franmara-Private-Preserve-Preservation-Spray/dp/B001AS4NCM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1398645996&sr=8-1&keywords=private+preserve+wine+preserver   I keep several bottles of whiskey on hand at a time, so sometimes it may take a few months to drink a whole bottle. That stuff does a great job of killing all the oxygen in the bottle before you close it back up. Especially when a bottle gets way down to 1/4 or so left, the oxygen in there really starts to deteriorate the whiskey. The preservation spray will make a 1-2 month old bottle of opened whiskey taste just like the day you opened it if you use it every time you pour.

  14. I just got rid of my SR22.  Years ago I had a Walther P22 (sold it years ago due to financial hardships) and it, in my opinion, was a vastly superior gun.  Maybe I got an SR22 that was less than exemplary... it had a lot of internal rough edges, and quite often would not chamber the second round from the magazine.    I bought the SR22 instead of another P22 because I wanted to try this new Ruger that everyone was raving about.  I am a bona-fide S&W M&P addict (currently have four) and thought about the M&P22 for precisely the reason you stated; to practice with the same platform I shoot normally.  Then I realized I have a bunch of different guns!  Trigger discipline and sight alignment are pretty similar across the firearm field.  I like small 22s, so I decided against the M&P22.  The 12 round capacity of the M&P22 is cool, though.    If I had it to do all over again, I'd get another P22... and in another month or two, I probably will!   I know everyone's tastes and experience are different and that's cool.  This is simply my experience.

  18. We will NOT being going into why anyone is banned. The punishments handed out are between the staff and the member. If the member chooses to talk about it that is fine but we, as staff, will not discuss it.   With that being said we sometimes find it in the best interest of the board to remove members here before they are able to do harm. To all onlookers it may seem as though some members did nothing wrong but I can assure you that those who were banned were banned for good reason. And in some cases it doesn't mean they did anything wrong on TGO but was done to prevent potential harm to the board or its members. We as moderators are here to protect the board and hopefully protect its members, especially so if TGO is used to do the damage.   Trust me when I say those that were banned were banned for good reason. We take banning people very seriously and unless it is something major that has to be addressed immediately we, as staff, often discuss what needs to be done. We have been discussing those that were banned for a very, very long time and it became time to act.   As far as a list of who is banned and why, I see no need for it. It will not change anything and will only serve to satisfy the curiosity of some. It will also serve to embarrass some who may not wish to have it posted. I know they are already banned but as I said before all punishments, including banning, are between the staff and the member. And just to give you an idea we have 91 pages of banned members with 10 members on each page. That is a HUGE list even if we wanted to post it.

  23. Be very careful if you decide to carry without a round chambered... If you do a press check to make sure there's no round it WILL effect the feeding on the next round in your mag. I've tried this at the range a couple of times. It did repeatedly fail to chamber a round after a press check. Had to drop the mag and let the round fall out.

  25. I have never shot a 938 but I have manhandled them on a few occasions. Some people like the triggers, I found it a little stiff. The slide was easy to rack but, if the safety is on you can not rack the slide unless the hammer is pulled back, this caught me by suprise. It is kind of hard to tell if the safety is on or off. Something else, the gun can fire from the half cocked position with the safety on, it's not exactly easy to tell if it is half cocked or forward. The magazine is not as easy to release and change as many other guns. Other than that the sights are good, it is about the same size as a shield and they say they shoot very nice.

  26. I really, really like mine.    Pros: trigger!  cant be beat by anything else off the shelf in its size/class reliable -- hundreds of no problem free round in mine small/light/etc recoil is not harsh -- can practice with it enough to have confidence ambi safety easy to clean/ inspect/ etc   cons: low cap size/space/tradeoff RHO mag release price tag might be a little small for people with giant hands   comments on others: many of the models you list *have* a safety but it could be left in the "go" position as the trigger pulls are so harsh.  The sig is very different from the extremely long and heavy trigger guns like the kel tec.  And, honestly, if you can afford the sig, kel tec may not be for you, its primary draw is the price tag; they are rough utility guns.  Apparently the latest generation of ruger's stolen kel tec designs have improved the trigger pulls.  I just tried them and the pull is lighter and shorter than it was (which still is not saying much: it went from horrible to tolerable on the jonnin scale).    The 238 is basically the same gun in 380.  Small size differences, but you would be using a weaker pistol that costs more per round to shoot.  380 is for people that can't take the recoil of the micro 9s, but again, the sig's recoil is only "modest".

  28. I loved mine especially with the pinky extension mag grip.  The safety is always nice especially if you don't want to put it in a holster inside your bag/purse (most females just throw it in the diaper bag), but it has little weight and is extremely easy to shoot, not to mention it feels good in your hands and is reliable.

  29. Time to muddy the water. I just bought a VZ2008 rifle in 7.62x39.  It's a semi-auto only copy of the Czech VZ58 service rifle.  I remembered shooting one while in the Army many years ago and liked it much better than any AK I've seen.   The VZ2008 is a decent choice for home defense.  Lighter than an AK, very compact with the folding stock, more ergonomic than the AK variants (like THAT'S hard to do!), has a bolt hold-open, more accurate, and spare parts are very cheap right now.  Drawback is that it doesn't use the same magazines as the AK.  But the magazines are aluminum, high quality, and very light compared to the heavy steel AK mags.  Cost is over $600.  But that's seems to be what AKs are going for as well.   BTW, after coming home from the range, my wife stole the VZ2008.

  31. I've known people to get gift cards for large amounts as wedding or housewarming gifts, only to turn around and sell them for fifty or seventy-five cents on the dollar. I've bought some in the past. If I don't know the person, I meet them at the store to ensure the cards are legit. I haven't had any issues.

  36. Just an update: gun ran flawlessly today! All I had to do was move the rear sight 9 clicks to the left and we were golden! Wolfattack went prone and put 3 shots in one hole at about 20 yards with irons... good enough for me! I took it easy going through the first mag. Later, we set up some water-filled jugs, loaded up both my ARs (I took this one, he had my fancier one) with 42rd mags and blazed through them in probably 20-25 seconds, then I burned through another 42rd mag to continue the carnage. Yea... the gun was HOT!!! All the grease and lube was smoking/ steaming off for about 2 minutes. Then I picked it back up and dumped another 30 chasing golf balls. :-) I'm super happy with it! Perfect function, light weight, and no tendency to baby it! Flippin' SWEET!!

  44. I would agree they are better out of the box, and a good smith can improve them. But the Rugers aren't bad, cost less, and as I'm a fan of pointing out, you won't find too many, if any "S&W only" loads. They are just crazy beefy. I'd recommend one as a first gun if someone really wanted a revolver. I think Ruger is on top of the heap for best (American made) overall value for the money. S&W is great, but the saved cash can go a long way toward ammo. Having said that I would recommend going to a few shops and putting as many in your hands as possible. If you can rent them to shoot, even better.
