  1. Somewhere people have gotten the idea that exploiting people, whether due to ignorance or desperation, for a "good deal" is capitalism. It is not nor has it ever been understood that way. Capitalism works off integrity of both ends. That is why we have problems with so many corporate and government issues. A good deal has to be a fair deal or else it is exploitation. It's like cheating at cards and then justifying it by saying its ok because they agreed to play you and didn't object.

  3. One afternoon a lawyer was riding in his limousine when he saw two men along the road-side eating grass.   Disturbed, he ordered his driver to stop and got out to investigate.   He asked one man, "Why are you eating grass?"   "We don't have any money for food," the poor man replied. "We have to eat grass."   "Well, then, you can come with me to my house and I'll feed you," the lawyer said.   "But sir, I have a wife and two children with me. They are over there, under that tree."   "Bring them along," the lawyer replied.   Turning to the other poor man he stated, "You may come with us, also."   The second man, in a pitiful voice, then said, "But sir, I also have a wife and six children with me!"   "Bring them all as well," the lawyer answered.   They all entered the car, which was no easy task, even for a car as large as the limousine.   Once under way, one of the poor fellows turned to the lawyer and said, "Sir, you are too kind. Thank you for taking all of us with you.”   The lawyer replied, "Glad to do it. You'll really love my place. The grass is almost a foot high."

  4.   That's what makes a good one.   -------------   Lawyer loses big case, walks out of court, throws his hands to the sky, exclaims "I would do anything to never lose another case!"   Poof! The Devil himself appears, says, "I can make that happen for you, my man. But I will require not just your soul, but the souls of your wife, your kids, your parents, and even those of your dog and cat."   Lawyer thinks for a long moment and says,   "So what's the catch?"   -----------     - OS

  7.   And to me that is the real problem.  To mention "Blazing Saddles", again - as well as other Mel Brooks movies like Spaceballs (another of the funniest movies ever made) - sure some of the gags and comedy in those was silly, vulgar or crass but you could tell that a lot of intelligent thought went into that silliness and some consideration went into the vulgarity and crassness.  In other words, those things were included on purpose for a particular comedic effect, not just thrown in because they were expected.  There was a scene in "Blazing Saddles" where a bunch of cowboys are sitting around a campfire eating beans and farting.  That was funny - not just because of the farts but because it played on the stereotype you always saw in Westerns where guys on the trail are constantly eating beans.  We all know what beans do to you but no movie that I know of had made that connection, before.  In that case, then, the farts weren't just thrown in there to have a fart joke/scene but actually served to further the parody of Westerns by acknowledging the results of eating all those beans.  I mean, the way many of the old Westerns would have it cowboys on the trail lived on beans and not much more.  If that were the case, they probably produced more methane than the cows they were herding and Brooks was pointing that out.   The same idea is true of most of Monty Python's comedy - those guys had to be geniuses to come up with some of the silly things they came up with and to carry them off in such a funny way.  Many of today's movies have silliness and vulgarity for the sake of silliness and vulgarity rather than as a part of truly satirical comedy.  I think that is why I thought the show Beavis and Butthead was really funny and always hated South Park - the former was comedy making fun of a couple of teenage losers while the latter was just an excuse to create a character that was, literally, an animated piece of feces.

  8. The XD line is at least as good as any Glock, at least as far as I have experience.  Mine are extremely accurate and reliable.  The only issue I ever had was using SWC bullets, but never an issue with HP or target.   I also don't get people saying they have an issue with the grip safety.  I have never noticed it.  If you are holding the pistol properly, you won't either.  I'm curious if the same people complaining about the Springfield grip safety also complain about 1911s.

  9. I fail to see how the entire restaurant chain, that is actively investigating and promising action should be boycotted.   The manager or employee that did this, yes, they should be fired at a minimum.   However, it would be like holding your entire company accountable because one of your installers said/did something that offended me, instead allowing you as the employer to deal with the offending employee.

  10. Well, the whole thing was a farce anyway since I did not end up going due to a last minute business related emergency.    That said, I guess I need to clear things up just a bit, so that the assumption isn't that I'm stupid here.    I did not call them and ask if I could carry a gun into the symphony hall. I called and inquired as to whether or not they have a weapons policy. For all they know, I could have been an anti-gunner making sure that they were providing a "safe" environment for me to attend the symphony. Or maybe they thought I was asking if I could carry a gun into the building. Either way, I don't care one little bit. What bothers me more is that I report my findings here on this forum, and all I am met with is the assumption that I did something stupid or wrong by asking a question.   I see fear and derision from people who are supposed to be supportive of the rights that I choose to exercise and defend.    I understand that the majority of you are trying to be helpful, but for the rest of you, please refrain from offering useless, fear-based advice and comments. They should have no place here.    And one last thing. If we are beaten into submission to the point that we can't even ask questions for fear of the reprisal, then what's the point of fighting the madness anyway?

  11.  I don't know about any one else but I am getting sick and tired of our Government sticking our noses in issues regarding other peoples problems. People keep talking about freedom. Back in the beginning when the Americans held the Boston Tea Party in the Boston Harbor it was the beginning of our reach for Freedom. Out numbered and far out gunned a determined group of Freedom loving people told the King and Queen of England to kiss their butts and what they could do with their taxes. Way I see it these third world country's seeking freedom can earn theirs the same way we won ours. They can fight for it and if they want it bad enough they will win the fight. Some people call them Civil Wars, other people call the religious wars. We had our Civil war also and I didn't see any other countries rushing over to help fight in ours. We settled it and the nation became one again. I say we quit volunteering to help every that asks for help and say NO!!! If you want it fight for it or live under the oppression you live under now. When we left Iraq they were a free and independent country. 4000 Americans died and thousands more injured and maimed for life giving the that freedom and now they are screaming and begging us to come back and help them again. I say NO NO NO and 1 more NO!!!!! If they want it bad enough they will find a way to get it. If they want someone else to come and do the dirty work for them again and lose more American lives the answer needs to be NO!!! Freedom is not free and if we keep fighting and dying for a country we earned the freedom for once and go back again they will never stand on their own. South Korea is a good example of that. We fought to keep them and we have had to have a standing army presence there ever since. I say not again anywhere except Israel. We stand with Israel which is the only country over there we could depend on to fight for us and I guess that is probably why our President resents them so much..........................jmho

  13. I sat down this afternoon and tried to watch "We Are The Millers", which is supposed to be a comedy. After listening to 10 minutes of nothing but expletives and profanities, I finally turned it off and am sitting here shaking my head.   I grew up in the days of Red Skelton, Martin and Lewis, Danny Kaye, and clean comedy, which was actually FUNNY. Today, every show and every movie seems to have nothing but vulgar and offensive language and sexual innuendo which is supposedly "funny".   I just don't get it. Years ago my wife and I went with two other couples to see a Whoopi Goldberg and Ted Danson movie that was billed as "the funniest movie of the year" (funny how every comedy gets billed this way; can they really ALL be the funniest movie of the year?). Nothing but foul language and nothing that I found even remotely funny. I told my wife I couldn't watch any more of it and I walked over to the next theater to see the last half of Jurassic Park. I don't mind a few colorful metaphors, but when every other word is the F bomb or something equally offensive and gratuitous, I simply can't watch it. How did we get so far away from cleanliness and true family entertainment?

Yes   I used my zip for shipping estimates and it came out to about a little over 11 cents a round shipped.  You also get an ammo can.   Is it cheap?  No.   But it is better than the cost of other plinking ammo.   Only about double what ,22 should cost.  But it is in stock.   A year or two down the road this stuff might be considered cheap.  Just thought I'd pass it along.   http://www.jgsales.com/22lr-s-b-38gr-lead-round-nose,-2000rds-loose-in-ammo-can.-p-70090.html

I'd love to be able to pocket carry it, but it looks like it's a bit too big for that.[/quote] To be honest, it depends on what I'm wearing. When I'm wearing a close fitting pullover, I carry it in a Crossbreed style holster I made. If I have a baggy shirt on, I usually carry it in a Bianchi Minimalist (model 105)...my favorite holster for it. If I'm not sure where I'll wind up, I use the paddle holster that came with it. On the weekends when I'm wearing looser pants, I put it in a DeSantis pocket holster, but it takes big pockets and loose pants for that.

  17. Everything is relative.  Personally, the idea of running a $15,000 engine close to destruction in order to see how fast you can go 1/4 mile isn't my bag.  But, I do like shooting my Sterling and M10/45.  A $250 case of 9mm lasts a lot longer than a 1/4 mile run!!!   The sad thing about renting a machine gun is that the cost is counter-productive to giving you any experience other than just hosing off a magazine.  For me, learning to engage multiple targets in line, column, and echelon is what full-auto is all about.    Shooting real belt-feds is a dying art.  Modern militaries don't really teach how to most effectively use a ground-mounted belt-fed machine gun.  And not many places teach proper control of a shoulder-fired automatic weapon either.   Still, I'd encourage you to go and have fun.

  18. I find them very easy to pocket carry. Loaded it probably will not feel any different than your 640, but you will be gaining at least one round. I will say that the .45 version may not be for the recoil sensitive. I have not been able to shoot a XDS 9 yet so I can't comment.

  19. I guess I'm one of those people who really don't have an absolute, be all, end all favorite handgun. I do have several XD pistols, and one XDm. I have no problem at all with the grip safety on any of them. Personally, I absolutely love the XD 45 Tactical(5" barrel). I find it to be one of the easiest shooting and most accurate 45 pistols I have. It holds well for me and with the longer sight radius, it is very easy to be accurate with it. As an added bonus, I traded for the gun not knowing it had a guide rod laser system in it. And eitherthe man I got it from didn't know or just forgot about it. But it is dead on poi at under 50 feet. I really haven't tried it at any longer distances. My first was a SD9 subcompact, and I'll not part with it. I find it as easy to shoot as any compact, such as the G19, and favor it over many others; compact or fullsize. It now resides at home with an extended mag and a TLR-1 light on it and I find it to be a very good house gun. The XDm 9 5.25 is awesome for target shooting/competition. As with most of my guns, it is capable of far outshooting my abilities. But one of the greatest things about the XD line these days is that they are no longer the trendy, most wanted, newest item on the market. So prices are really dropping on them, at least I seem to seethat happening in some places. I'm sorry I don't remember the site, but I ran across nib XD9 subcompacts over the weekend for 395. That's a very good price for a now under-rated and high quality handgun. I would heartily recommend to anyone in the market for a good 9, or subcompact 9 take a look at these.

  20. Yes. The knoxville's park carry law was pre '86 so they didn't have follow the new parks law. However, this law preempts all local weapon laws, so now for knoxville to ban carry in their parks they would have to pass a resolution and post just like the rest of the state. But let's not point that out to them.

  21. Haven't heard, sounds like their experience is closely matching some negative reviews on the web. Personally if accompanies installer came out, set me up, shook my hand at the end and said we were set, I'd give them exactly one chance to fix the error after an alarm went off with no response. If it's happened multiple times I'd call them and tell them to collect their crap out of my house ASAP, because I'm calling a real alarm company.

  23. OP: I want to take a minute to congratulate you for accepting the responsibility and taking the initiative to prepare yourself to protect you and your loved ones. For the moment, let's say that by "AR" we are talking 5.56 or .223 caliber. 5.56 or shotgun slug or 00 buck.... and penetration. Penetration will differ for the many variations of rounds available for both - the construction of your "building" and your chosen lines of fire will all affect penetration. in 5.56. hornady TAP 75gr has proven very effective at stopping BGs. black Hills loaded w Barnes 55grTSX are also highly effective rounds. might I suggest: Learn the 4 laws of firearm safety cold. obey them always. 1). You are doing a good thing in thinking this through. keep asking questions and reading. grrreat info & folks on TGO. 2) get some training by a reputable defensive tactics/firearms instructor (inferring from your posts that you are relatively new to the aforementioned firearms). 3) Plan your home defense, where to entrench, when to engage (the line in the sand), where you might retreat if that becomes a necessity (fire, overwhelming numbers, etc.). Don't just have a weapon (tool); have a plan (and the learned ability) to effectively utilize that tool in your defense. 4). Intentionally choose lines of fire. know what is beyond your target along your lines of fire (adjust line of fire if necessary/possible). - making sure you cannot be "scared into" shooting toward a portion of the building which is occupied by loved ones. if you can incorporate natural backstops like brick or stone fireplaces, library shelves full of books, etc., then do so. 5). practice at your chosen distance like your life depends on it. practice makes permanent, so slow and correct is better than fast and sloppy. over-penetration is less of a concern if you can reliably (read every trigger press) put rounds on target at chosen distances under stress. later, if you can do so safely, introduce stress into your training. good luck! also, if you have kids, find a way to secure your HD weapons so that kids cannot access them.

  24.     That part of ATF FAQ is wrong, btw, has been wrong ever since it's been on ATF site. Federal law only requires notification when shipping between two non-licensees.   But FedEx requires it under their FAQ. So does UPS.   Both FedEx and UPS allow individuals to ship firearms to an FFL as per both of their TOS's but has to go a form of overnight. You just got an idiot clerk, which happens frequently, and why it is such a hassle to deal with any of the three carriers.   But better that you got a label, would have cost you at least 30 clams to send it yourself.   - OS

  30. Thanky, that's exactly what I had in mind. I like the old school fixed stock rifle look but the A2 stocks are too long for me. While they're essentially the only game in town, I'm quite happy with the Cav Arms stock. The mid-length upper gives it that rifle look. I still may get a carry handle for it, but having shot a couple AR's with red dots... they're just so darn easy. And I got a good deal on the optic here. Time to build it? I probably watched the lower assembly videos 2 or 3 times before I started assembly. Took me about an hour to build the complete lower... and I probably did it 3 times. Both the pivot and take down pin were really stiff at first and I fiddled with them for a bit until I was satisfied I'd put them together correctly. While the threaded bolt catch pivot pin is very easy and convenient... mine was also pretty very stiff. A minute or two with a small round file fixed that. Then the issues that I had with the selector spring made me completely remove, check, and reinstall the trigger group twice.... and I still used the wrong spring! I blame PSA for intentionally confusing me by putting too many springs in the LPK. But I'll fix that when I get the new pistol grip. Beyond that it takes about 5 seconds to slap the upper on the lower (I bought a complete upper) and you're done. I did swap the hand guard which took maybe 5 minutes. The hard part there was installing the Magpul version. It was really tight on the FSB and took a bit to convince myself to push it that hard. But once I did that, it went right on. Installing the flip-up rear took maybe 2 minutes. I read the reviews that said to push it rearward while tightening... so I did and it tightened up fine. Installing the optic took maybe 20-30 minutes. No rocket surgery there, just me being slow and anal about leveling it and getting it where I wanted it on the rail. I've not shot it yet but after installing the sights, the red dot and irons appear to be within a couple inches of one another at ~100 yds. The dot appears to be exactly the same height as the front sight and the width of the post to the right. So in all of that... maybe 90 minutes if done all at the same time. Probably 20 minutes (or less) for someone who knows what they're doing. These things really do go together like Legos. On the other hand, that FAL that I built was MUCH more involved. ;)

  32. It is good to re-read that article.   I'm with KKing and Dustbuster on this.   I don't own any "safe queens" and have gone through 1000's of rounds of Wolf and Tula in my AR's and will continue to do so. Guns are tools...I take decent care of mine...but I consider them tools, and they get used, and used hard. Barrels are replaceable and relatively affordable.   I respect that others choose not to shoot steel cased ammo through their guns...but I personally couldn't afford to shoot mine much without the steel cased option.

  33. Have three XD 9mm: the subbie, service, and tactical.  Love 'em. Jumped into them as my "main pistol battery" about 8 years ago (had always just had centerfire revolvers before).   Picked over Glock because:   - Gen 3 and forward finger grooves don't feel right to me, and didn't want to spend however long to ferret out used Gen 2s   - although can shoot Glocks as well as anything else with sights, they point high for me like no other handgun I've ever held   - I like both the loaded chamber and cocked indicators on the XD fine, and the grip safety was actually a significant selling point to me -- I see it as added safety margin for reholstering if nothing else.   Carried the subbie for a good while IWB, but had to be even more discreet at times, so settled into Kahr PM9 in pocket most always anymore. But I do really miss the good feeling of that 13+1.   Ya get up this way (Knox) you can shoot 'em.   - OS

  38. I'd skip the antenna and get a netflix account instead. Recurring cost, but about $10.00 a month and all kinds if good documentaries and old shows and movies. If you want to be really slick you can get hulu for about 8. More bucks and have even more shows. Really fancy and you can get amazon prime and watch even more there. I've got amazon prime and it pays for itself in shipping savings so the shows are a bonus. I have Netflix too, but I use my old roommates girlfriends account. ( they're fine with it Netflix and girlfriend both.) I access them both on the TV through an xbox video game system so pay about 10 bucks a month for that. Seems a bit much but I've for more entertainment than I can shake a stick at for under $20 a month and having the xbox reintroduced me to video games as I'd stopped playing years ago but always enjoyed them.

  39. I hear you - and I'm a youngin', only three months out of my teenage years! I can't understand how disgusting and foul things have gone from unaccepted to supposedly "LOL"-worthy in the space of about two to three generations. It's why I don't even watch movies. Our tastes as a whole have gone from refined to trash.   I'd like to add one more thing - this seems to go in tandem with how folks present themselves in public. My dad (71) says that he and his old folks would always dress nicely when they went "out" - as seldom as that was. Their car was always shined and in shipshape. The women dressed with at least a half a thought of respect for themselves.   We've gone from that to where nobody cares how they appear in public - I'm not talking about everyone wearing a suit and tie or a dress all the times, but at least something half decent. If you look around in town - wherever "in town" may be for you - you see so much trash. What gets me the most, odd as it may be for a young man, is seeing attractive young ladies who don't appear to be dopeheads basically advertising themselves. Skimpy tops, skimpy shorts. It's disgusting.   It seems to me that society seems to follow the state of the entertainment industry, I swear... in the 40s and 50s we had more class, a sense of respect for ourselves. Now as movies and all entertainment has devolved into an orgy of provocative and piggish filth, so has society. I don't know, maybe it's just me. Being so young, who am I to say anything?

I'm one of those bikers that doesn't look like one, I find it funny when I go to those places where the garb is the lifestyle. There is nothing better than riding with a large group of bikes but I'd rather just be me and wear what works for me as opposed to what's in style. The full throttle saloon has become a circus down in Daytona, I like the small scurvy biker bars where the women are friendly and the beer is ice cold and priced reasonably.

  49. Thought about this some more and realized that, due to my rather catastrophic ankle injury earlier this year, it kinda' already has happened to my wife and I. I mean insofar as my becoming suddenly disabled with pretty much ZERO income for several months, it really gave a us a chance to test our preparations. Indeed if it weren't for the prepping we've done, we'd have been more or less completely helpless from the start. As it is we've gotten by reasonably well with just a little outside help from friends.   It hasn't been fun, but we've learned a lot from it and now know what changes we need to make in future preparations to avoid the pitfalls we've encountered thus far.   Question: "What if all of this is for nothing?"   Answer: Then you count your freakin' blessing that you never actually had to put it to the test... And then you really give thanks that you've never stumbled and put a .357mag 158gr JHP through your ankle or suffered some other equally idiotic & crippling accident and had to suddenly find out the hard way whether your prepping ideas actually work.   What if all of this is for nothing? Well, it's not for nothing --- Because it doesn't take a government or societal meltdown or an electro-magnetic pulse or even an earthquake to put it to the test. Just one stupid little accident... I found out the hard way that only Superman is truly invincible. The rest of us are frail and human and only one stupid little stumble away from finding out just how freakin' important prepping actually is.   ...TS...
