  1. Had to say goodbye to a great friend this afternoon after almost 14 years. Daisy was the most loyal dog I've ever known. My wife and I got her a week after we got married, and she's been everywhere and through everything with us since. She really should have been a working dog. She took absolute joy in performing the jobs you gave her. She would retrieve until you were the one who was worn out. The second picture below on the paddle board was the only way she'd let my kids swim in the lake If she wasn't out on the board right beside them, she'd jump in, grab the strap on the back of their life jackets and tow them back to shore. Man, we're going to miss this dog.

  4. I am of two minds on this. On the one hand, from a political and philosophical standpoint, I agree. If a person has to sign up to possibly (however unlikely in this day and age) be drafted to go to war and kill or be killed, can vote for our political leadership and, most importantly, is considered 'mature' enough to be an adult when it comes to criminal charges then that person should also be considered to be 'mature' enough to decide he or she wants to drink a damn beer or legally carry a firearm. Now, however, for the reality. The reality is that many lawmakers obviously do not agree with the above which means that those of us who have already met the requirements - and paid the money - to obtain an HCP that was recognized by most of the states in the union have already and may continue to lose 'value' from said HCP simply so a handful of people can have the option of maybe getting a carry permit a scant three years earlier than before. Further, don't forget that (unless I completely misunderstand other, recent laws) those folks could already legally 'carry' in their vehicles without an HCP for those, few years. So, philosophical belief aside the reality is that there is much potential for loss for all TN HCP holders verses a minuscule amount of gain for what is likely an almost infinitesimal number of people. Weighed in the balance, therefore, the scale tips decidedly to the negative for this law. Further, if I really delve into the philosophical side of the issue I have to say that I do not believe there should be any connection, whatsoever, between military service and the excercise of rights. If one 18 year old can legally obtain a permit then any and all 18 year old citizens should have the option (as said 18 year old citizens are still considered adults for criminal charges, ect. - if they are legally 'adults' in one place then they should be legally 'adults' in all considerations regardless of military service or lack thereof.) Further, I have known several members of the military and can say that, when we were younger, they seemed no more likely to be 'responsible' and no less likely to be 'hot headed' than those of us who were not members of the military. Therefore, it would make a lot more sense to allow anyone 18 and older who can legally have a gun to carry in TN without a permit and limit permits to 21 and older. That would allow 18 year old residents of Tennessee - all of them - to be eligible to carry while not screwing the rest of us over with respect to reciprocity.

  6. Finished up my most recent build thinking it would shoot 5.56, turns out it throws flames. Joking aside I was shooting some Monarch ammo that had considerably more flash than American made ammo. This picture was also the worst out of multiple magazines. Thought it was a funny picture regardless.

  8. I have compiled the information for a DOPE card with my .22lr trainer, but I've never done this before. If someone can review my process and maybe point out any areas I didn't think of I would greatly appreciate it. I gathered data in three ways. First, I shot groups at 30, 40, 50, and 60 meters to measure the actual bullet drop from my rifle. My rifle is zeroed at 30 meters. Second, I shot 10 rounds and recorded the velocities with my chronograph. Third, I plugged the numbers I had into the ballistic calculator from the Berger Bullets website. The DOPE card it spit out seems very close to my actual observed drop. I think the only things left to do is watch out for velocity fluctuations due to temperature variations and record the effect of wind. I also checked my scope for accurate tracking by doing a box test as well as just randomly twisting the turrets and then returning it to zero. I'm pleased enough with it's performance although an upgrade is in my future. Thanks for any help. http://

  10. Here is a second gun resurrection post. This is a "how's it done" posting that I hope will be enjoyable as well as an informative posting. The Marlin #47 pictured here is one I bought on GB a few years ago. The 47 was made in 1930-31 and only given to investers who would buy at least 4 shares of Marlin stock for $100. It was also the First Marlin to get the new cyanide process color case hardened receiver. Of course it would have to be THIS rifle to be caught up in a fire! All the springs including the mag tube spring are still in good working condition making it a worthy project. This segment will deal with making a new pump handle since the wood on this was toast. I have already fitted a new semi inlet butt stock from Numrich Gun Parts. To find a piece of wood that may be the easiest to remanufacture into a handle, I found I had just the piece. It was an unknown broken butt stock that would save me one whole machine operation. The butt stock tang bolt hole happen to be slightly larger in diameter than the Marlins barrel OD. So I band sawed the stock to include half of the length wise hole. Once the chunk was cut out, it was a simple case of measuring the mag tube hole center below the barrel channel and putting V counter sink holes on the ends for turning the piece on centers. Here I match the OD to the original tho slightly over for later sanding. Once I had a round handle, it was easy to bore the mag tube hole centered in the 6 jaw lathe chuck to this raw pc. The next step was to mill in the action bar relief. The mag tube hole drill is set into the handle and then clamped snugly into the bench top mill so as to not crack the handle in the vise. A nice snug fit The action bar has a defined rust line where the wood covered it so that line was where I chucked the rusted end of the bar into the vise. I use a drill that would be the ID of the bar's attaching holes. That drill is put directly in line with the Bar hole and then the wood is slid on under the drill and a perfectly in line hole is born! Same pre line up the hole, then get the wood in between the bar & drill. Once the line up holes are in, the handle its self is chucked up and the holes bored to attaching screw OD. Then the screw escutcheon reliefs are bore to exacting depth. The escutcheons yet need to be sand blasted cleaned and blued before I press them in the handle, but here it is in the rought. The next segment will be the relining of the barrel.

  11. She also said she's making the jump so that she can spend more time with her kids. Please.......anyone making $15 million/yr ought to have enough saved up to chuck it all and be a mom. Why doesn't she just say it's the glitter job she's always wanted and shut up.

  13. I haven't gotten one yet. :/ I got distracted (M9A1) and am just gunna wait for the inevitable Performance Center version to arrive. The PC Shield 9 is so much more awesome than the already really good Shield. I know I'd just replace the regular one as soon as the PC model arrives. I'm in no hurry for one. Will probably get my first 1911 before I get a 45 Shield... I'm on a streak of steel gun buyin'.

  14. Meant to add: where it will likely be found unconstitutional by any SCOTUS regardless of makeup, unless the right to carry is incorporated to the states first. edit: and come to think of it, the right to own firearms has been incorporated, and yet states may still demand waiting periods, licensing, registration, and even ban certain types of firearms, hicap mags, etc. So if none of these states rights are prohibited, why would a state's right to honor only certain permits, or none at all, be prohibited? The only thing I could see with the right to carry incorporated is that all states permit process might be forced into "shall carry" rather than "may carry". But even then, the exact "reasonable" hoops to jump through to do so would still have to be attacked case by case. - OS

  15. She was a dog whose story was bigger than her life. She loved that paddleboard. Primarily I think it was because she could stand in the end of it and I could paddle silently up into a bunch of ducks where she could jump into the middle of them. If I left in the board without her, she would swim after me until I turned around. Ocean, lake, creek, river or farm pond - she didn't care - she would go. And, Lord help you if you were standing on the edge of a dock and someone threw a decoy or a tennis ball past you

  18. MikeW, Thanks a ton for your very able assistance. I'll go to the P.38 forum in the future. Yes, the slide removes fine. The gun is easy to take down and clean and the bore is excellent. Took me a bit to figure some things out, but disassembly and reassembly wasn't too dramatic. The slide springs are OK and cycle nicely. The locking block is a nice tight fit but moves easily. I'll check the links and then I'll contact Luger Doc if I'm still stumped. I don't wanna spend a lot of $$$ on this gun. It's a relic, all I care is that it's functional - I have no qualms with retiring it and simply make it a display piece. Mucho thanks again, Mike S Stafford, VA

  23. It dries out faster if you pour it out into a baking pan. Plus you can easily see when all of the desiccant is dried out (assuming yours changes color). Then use a funnel to pour it back in the canisters. I use an old baking pan that's only used for this. I wouldn't use one for food after this.

  25. These old box lock doubles look a lot alike, I have my Fathers Savage/Fox model B in sixteen ga. If this one is like my Fox there will be some markings on the action under the barrels. Look for charts on line for Western, and Savage as they made Model B's for different company's. These can tell you when it was made. I used charts from Savage to tell mine was made in 1960. WTH. 33. I retired in 05. The Navy has restructured the helo community since then, but back then we had HS (carrier helo squadrons with 60 F and H), HSL (small boy, aka surface ship helos squadrons with 60B) and HC (supply ship helos with 46's) The 46 crewman were crew chief and maintainers. Since I retired the have done away with that command structure and I haven't cared enough to learn what they did. My DD-214 and retirement cert that came in the mail on 7 Dec 16 which was with the orders stating I was transferred to the retired list on 1 July 05.

  35. For things that need oil, not grease, I use a 50/50 mix of 30 weight synthetic and automatic transmission fluid. If I want a little more cleaning action I add 10% of injector cleaner into the mixture. For things that need grease I use the molybendum disulfide grease from Walmart. It is less than $5 and lasts forever.
