Here's where I get decidedly UN-PC. As a white male I am advantaged, but not how the grievance industry attempts to make it sound. My entire life I was told that I was going to succeed or fail on my own merits, by my own actions. I never had anybody telling me that I was disadvantaged by "X" or that the system was set up against me. That put me in the advantaged place of not having anyone or anything to blame for my own shortcomings. I have to own them. I do ok, but I could have been much more successful in life many ways. The reason I'm not is due to my own poor decisions. I know that and I own it. Many folks have spent their whole lives being told that they are disadvantaged due to skin color or gender and so when they fail, they have an easy target to blame for their troubles never having to look inward and make a true assessment of their strengths and weaknesses. That is how they are really disadvantaged they have someone to blame other than themselves.9 points

Food stamps should be abolished and you get a voucher to get a block of cheese, flour, powdered milk, water, and beans from your health and human services establishment. And call all these programs what they are Handouts not entitlements. Also have you noticed how they have started calling Obamacare affordable health care on the news now. He is trying to separate himself from it.4 points

Some of us have a lot of fair advantages too. I won't go into details but my dad pretty much pulled himself up by his boot-straps and made sure he made the best life he could for me and my brother. He is a man I continually measure myself against. Should the good work he put in, the long hours, the night school, the daily grind to be a provider be negated? (Well, judging by what is happening to my efforts, apparently so). Absentee fathers are not even the complete issue. My dad's dad was one of those. It may even have been what made my dad the man he was. I suspect the main difference was the he wasn't raised in a culture of government dependence. That's the most corrosive element on *any* culture.3 points

Her 5 minutes of fame may cost her more than just some media attention. When it comes to kids, parents are like a rabid Rottweiler on steroids. As it should be!. We do not want our kids to get hurt. All it takes is some overzealous parent to do something stupid over this letter. I would ask her wtf she was thinking..3 points

Well apparently; we folks in Tennessee are pretty damn lucky. I mean, we must have solved every other criminal problem we have if we can now go out and buy a tractor so that we can concentrate on texting while driving! I wonder what they'll do to stop distractions caused by such things as... 1. A heated discussion with a passenger, or 2. Fiddling with a GPS unit, or 3. Fiddling with a radio or DVD player, etc, etc.3 points

'Fraid yer a preachin' to my choir thar feller. Anytime I let myself slip from role of stoic contemporary historian to that of patriot, it's numbingly damned depressing, but neither does my best objective mode exactly foster much serenity about the Great American Experiment either - which I do consider as a clearly failed one. I can only equate my relatively close attention to the macabre fascination of watching ants slowly but inexorably kill a scorpion. Oh "they call me a cockeyed optimist" Shoot2 points

Guilty. You know what... It's one on a whole long list of unfair advantages I claim. I don't want to discount this problem. Being a white, evangelical male, I don't know that I have standing, so to speak. That said, I will make one point that I find so interesting - and this applies to your average, upper middle class entitled white kid, too. We're at an inflection point in history. The internet has changed things radically, and the boat is pulling away without us - all of us. So many barriers are being knocked down right now, and we're so focused on who's getting what from the government's teat that we're failing to see the world shifting around us. Education is changing. We're almost to the point where there are some truly viable alternative paths. I'm a postgraduate educated Engineer - recognized as an expert in my field. In the last year, I've taken four Stanford and MIT engineering courses outside of my discipline. These are the MOOC's (Massive Open Online Courses) that you hear people talking about. Each one of them has been completely free discounting my time spent. I've learned so much. And yet, do you know who's taking advantage of this? One of my colleagues recently taught one of these courses - and a popular one at that. We talked about enrollment, and about 1500 people finished the coursework for the class. Do you know how many of those resided in the US? About 30. There is a hungry world surrounding us that recognizes that the internet gives them access to some of the unfair advantage that America has claimed historically. We're missing it, because we're too busy pointing fingers and complaining that someone got a bigger piece of the pie than we did. We're about to have our collective asses handed to us. And it shouldn't come as a surprise, but it will. I know that I'm privileged. I'm appalled at our history, but I can't change or affect that. What I can change and affect is my behavior. As I tell my kids, you can't affect the fact that the world is unfair and it sucks sometimes. You can affect how you respond. I hope that I can use my privilege to help people who haven't had the same experience I've had.2 points

It's both parties. It's us (the people) vs them. It pains me to see people fight so hard in support of political machines that don't give a crap about us. The masses are being played against one another for the benefit of a few. It's been going on forever.2 points

So if some innocent person is killed in a vehicle accident because some other person was texting while driving, is that really "worse" than the exact same situation except that the person was messing with their radio? Their GPS? Talking with a passenger or just plain not actually DRIVING their vehicle? It's only my opinion but I don't believe the problem is "TEXTING"l texting is just the symptom...the problem is STUPID IDIOT INCOMPETENT DRIVERS and until you get them off the road these people will continue to cause accidents and kill innocent people. You can throw all the $60 tickets at people you want but I can tell you now, if I want to do something that's against the rules, no $60 ticket is going to stop me and i don't think it will stop anyone else either. A couple of pages back (post 9) bersaguy mentioned that his grandson has already had two and perhaps three accidents that were the results of texting and/or listening to his GPS while driving...if the grandson hasn't come to grips with how stupid it is to do this after two or three vehicle accidents does anyone really think a $60 ticket will make a difference??? I'm not against enforcing the law...I'm not saying people should be allowed to text while driving (and frankly, the whole "hands free" bs is just that...you are STILL distracted while listening to/replying to a text or a phone call while driving)...I'm not discounting the pain or the loss of a loved one killed in a car wreck because of the actions of another driver. However, this "big rig" and $60 ticket garbage is just that - garbage...window dressing rather than having the guts to do what needs to be done. Okay...soap box put away...everyone have a nice Friday.2 points

"Whether people want to acknowledge it or not, whites do have an advantage over minorities." Applied for any universities, federal jobs, or jobs with companies that deal with the govt? The exact opposite is true. Pole Position, I've had to deal with stupid people too. And then I had the pleasure of dealing with institutionalized stupidity. I personally don't care if you're black, brown, green, or yellow (now, I really hate reds). But to slack off, not do your assigned duties, screw over your mates, go awol for the weekend and get away with it because you pull the race card... To be perfectly honest, the most racist people I have ever met were asian, followed very closely by blacks. Yeah, I've met a (very) few racist whites, but like I said, dealing with stupid people is a cross we all have to bear. A racist white will get corrected in a skinny minute. A racist minority is encouraged. And the white male gets blamed for all of it. I'm just as tired of that burden as you are.2 points

As someone who spends all day driving the roads in a semi, it is amazing how many people are addicted to their cell phones. I see countless drivers on a daily basis who can't even put their phones in the seat next to them, or anywhere else but their hands or lap. Less texting. More flashing. :dirty:2 points

It didn't happen quickly. The politicians started giving you the weiner inch by inch years ago. You got accustomed to it while hoping that it would stop, because you happened to like your politician. Now some big chocolate guy and his prison mates are ramming with no lube. Yes, it's disgusting, but so is what both parties are doing to us.2 points

Deja Moo ("I've heard this bull**** before") White? You're a racist. Male? You're a sexist pig. Stereotypes are only bad when applied to minorities, cults, or females. Equal opportunity means giving the job to someone who isn't qualified. I've had it with the whining. Either you can cut it or you can't, but quit crying that it's my fault. Next one to get in my face with that crap is liable to get their feelings hurt.2 points

I think we get the point you're making, but in order to change things we need to move up the chain. I think people underestimate the importance of what the TNHP are doing, even if it's stopping drivers texting. That will save lives! I also agree that people endangering the lives of others should be knocked in the head with the book, not just slapped on the wrist. Start with with your local law makers like your sheriff, mayor, & go from there. The law makers need to be made aware that changes are needed. The highway patrol officers spend most of their time traveling the interstate & not within your community. The law makers should be reminded that they work for us & voters remember. The TNHP's job is primarily traffic violations, working accidents, & upholding the rules of the road. Of course they'll help anywhere they're needed, but the sheriff dept. & city police are the eyes & ears of the community. My cousin's a trooper & says he often patrols several hundred miles a day, sometimes 12-16 hours a day or more, covering anywhere from 1 to 3 counties. You would do better to contact your lawmakers (as should we all) & hope change happens.1 point

Yeah, because there are so many college scholarships that are proudly given only to whites, not to mention all of those that are specifically for men, only. Goodness knows there are no, such scholarships for minorities or women. Oh, wait... Oh, and then there is so-called 'affirmative action' that requires a certain amount of a work force be white males. Can't forget that one. Oh, wait... Of course, we can't forget all of those government backed, tax dollar funded social programs intended to help the poor, white kids in rural areas get better schools, all the programs to keep those poor, rural white kids off of drugs and make sure they succeed. Too bad there aren't programs for inner city minorities. Oh, wait... Finally, we must not forget the NAACP - National Association for the Advancment of Caucasian People. Oh, no, that's right - it's the Advancement of Colored People. To have an association for the advancement of Caucasian people would obviously be racist. I suppose a mind wasted is only a terrible thing if that mind belongs to a 'Colored' person. Personally, I am so sick of all this crap I could puke. Quite possibly the greatest number of 'priveledged' people in this country are white but that in no way means that all white males are 'privileged'. Personally, I am too busy trying to make a living and get by from day to day to have any time to oppress anyone and I am sick and damned tired of being blamed for something I haven't done or told that I receive 'advantages' that I do not receive.1 point

Exactly. If you've ever played chess with a skilled player, you often won't see that you've already lost until bam, you're two moves away from checkmate. I'm sure there's some football analogy for those who are more comfortable with that. These people have been patient and have undermined things for generations.1 point

Lol I saw the ramp up for this a week or so ago, that peta or whoever was selling drones to their people to spy on unethical hunters. And I predicted this would be the result. And, LOL, those drones are expensive. http://www.outdoorhub.com/news/peta-launches-drone-fleet-advocates-hunter-watching/ says well over 300 bucks a pop, duh. Normally I would frown on the destruction of private property but spying on other people without a warrant is also a crime so I say blast the things until the price becomes too high for this program to continue.1 point

Well, really just thought it'd be fun to open the box and see what's in it. I could use a hat or two, so as long as it is a good looking hat I won't be disappointed. If I ended up with a light or something, that would be really awesome. That watch looks awesome, and I reckon 1/250 odds of winning it aren't bad compared to most other forms of lottery.1 point

In judging that yes. In judging why a kid standing on my porch is fat, and for me to judge whether this child gets candy or a note, is not for me, you or anyone else to judge. Treat everyone as an equal, the rest works itself out. We as adults are suppose to be role models for all the little people who look up at us. When our children (even other kids) see us acting as such as this lady is, then all of a sudden it's ok to single out obese children and treat them differently than other kids. Why your child is skinny or fat is none of my concern. But I damn sure ain't going treat them differently than other kids in the neighborhood. May we say that chunky little kid that you denied candy to, but give his friend some maybe getting bullied enough at school for being obese, that us adults shouldn't be doing it as well? The problem in this country right now, is that we care very little about other people's feelings, just so long as OUR's feelings don't get hurt. This country would be a much better place to live, if we all just cared a little bit more about the next person. That's why we shouldn't judge. DaveS1 point
