2. Bersa and SW are exactly right.... Everybody needs to pay attention to their surroundings, make eye-contact with folks they meet, and; above all else, be armed and willing to use it.... I'm like lots of other folks have opined; i aint goin into an alley, period... anywhere... If ya stay clear of places where the rats are; ya generally dont have to deal with 'em... We can quibble about the causes of this sort of behavior; but that aint the real problem... The problem is that it is, in fact, bein done... If you aint there to be smacked; they aint gonna smack ya...   I'm a relatively old geezer now; and one good punch would probably finish me off... If ya hit the ground; they will probably gut somp ya and probably kill ya if ya have any age on you; that's why i aint gonna have that happen...   keep your powder dry, leroy

 3. I'm pretty much with JayC on this...since when does a "school policy" override a parent's right to control his/her own children (such as deciding to walk them home rather than wait in a mile-long like of cars to pick them up?   I'm not saying that this parent couldn't have handled the situation better and without question, this cop was completely out of control and should, at the very least, lose a few weeks of pay, but still..if I go to school to pick up my child, early in the day...middle of the day...end of the school day; whatever...they had damn sure better produce my child.

 4. Thanks Dave, you are a great example of the "authoritarian-mindset" that I mentioned in my previous post, this is exactly the sort of mentality which is currently corrupting our nation's most basic founding principles & destroying the last little bits of individual liberty & freedom that the American People have remaining. Your "if there was only two people left on earth" comment, where you automatically assumed that one of them would have to have authority over the other one, instead of the two of them being equals is what our founding fathers attempted to protect us from when they wrote the Bill of Rights. If you've ever played a game of "Jenga" imagine replacing the tower of stacked wooden planks with our individual liberties & freedoms, if people who believes as you do keeps pulling pieces of them out one at a time even each plank is removed very slowly/carefully, the tower will still eventually collapse & have to be rebuilt.

 5.   I hitched my wagon to Zimmerman's cause because he wasn't guilty of murder. Trayvon wasn't a 12 year old baby face child. If people latched on to Trayvons thuggish nature, it was to combat that outright lie by our sorry ass media.

 6. Just like all those run-ins with the law he had before Trayvon. This poor guy must just have bad luck. After all, he was never "convicted" of the stuff he was originally charged with prior to the shooting, so that must mean he is clean. He just has bad luck and the world is against him. He never assaulted that cop when he was drunk. The restraining order filed against him years before Trayvon was bogus. The reports from his ex-wife and recent girlfriend are bogus. And those claims of rape by a female family member were just made up. He just has real bad luck. The world is against him. Poor Zimmerman. I wish the media would just leave him alone, this hero of the gun owning community that so many would love to buy a new gun for and have as a neighbor.

 7. Ah, more regulations.  "Laws" that aren't legislated.   So just how many guns are stolen from FFL's?  I wasn't aware it was such an epidemic.  Why don't they focus on the bigger problem of burglary of homes and automobiles and find a solution for that?  That's where the vast majority of "illegal" guns come from anyway isn't it?  Maybe if property crime was treated as it should it wouldn't be such a problem.

 8. These kids are not 100% stupid.  I would say the video footage is probably only a fraction what is going one, but I observed.  Kids in a group, attack a lone person walking opposite.  What appears to be a woman, sucker punched from behind, goes down like a pancake.  Only situational awareness gives one the edge, not the gun.  They'll pass by the one that is aware and choose the one trying to update his Facebook as he/she walks down the street.

 16. Well I don't know about big cities any longer because I avoid them like the plague. I seldom see Nashville any more and really don't miss it at all. I have never one to be found in an alley at any time. Never saw a need to go into an alley when there are streets full of people to walk on. Going into any alley in a big city is asking for trouble these days. Even in Walmart parking lots of any other large parking lots I am always vigil about what is around me and will not make myself vulnerable to an attack from any direction if at all possible. I realize that people do have to travel to Nashville or live in Nashville. All I can tell you is stay vigil when your out side the safety of your work place and home..................jmho

 17. There are no custody issues here other than the school holding his children hostage after the school day is over.  He is a legal guardian and normally picks his kids up from school.  The issue here is that the school instituted a new pickup policy that even the sheriff has admit is causing an unsafe situation in and around the school.   The 'security guy' Captain Donut made some rude comments the day before to Mr Howe and Mr Howe called the sheriff and complained...  the comments from Captain Donut stem from that complaint and him being clearly upset having his boss called.   And btw, Howe showed up outside at the normal pickup point, and it was Captain Donut that told him to go into the office... after school was let out, so there is no way Mr Howe's complaint impacted learning in anyway shape or form.   But lets be honest exactly how is a public school in this state ever a 'positive learning environment'?  It's a daycare prison at the best of times, not a learning institution.

 23.   Nah.  He was doing stupid crap at least as far back as 2005.   I believe that the reality is the Zimmerman some folks thought was an upstanding citizen never existed.  The guy is, was and will forever be a jackass.  A jackass who was (I believe) rightfully found 'not guilty' in the Martin case (being that 'not guilty' and 'had no responsibility for creating the situation in the first place' are not the same) but a jackass nontheless.   The current woman is not the first, not the second but the third woman to accuse Zimmerman of domestic violence.  Sure, they are probably not 'winners', themselves - and the fact that they are dating (or even married) someone like Zimmerman strengthens that suspicion - but c'mon, when the same or similar situations arise involving three, different women then you have to start considering what the common denominator might be.  In this case, that common denominator is Zimmerman.   It is kinda funny, to me, that getting in trouble at school and posting a picture of himself flipping the bird was enough for some folks to label Martin as Public Enemy #1 and a stone cold killa, gangsta in training but a history of violence against women and even a row with a cop simply means that the whole world is out to get poor, ol' Georgie.

 28. If the right people get hold of this one; it's a long way from over... This whole thing is, in fact, at best, a screw-up on the sheriff's deputy's part; and, at worst, an unlawful use of police power... The sheriff aint much better, much less the Cumberland County educrats...   While im on the subject; it seems to me that some pretty interesting and strange things are goin on in Cumberland county around this sheriff's department anyway... Witness the shooting of the four kids that wuz confessed to by an apparent dopehead and his wife... I think this one is a bit too convenient....   As i remember, he entered a guilty plea and apparently is tryin to waive the trial; very interestin, indeed...   As ive opined before; ive seen some things  over around Crab Orchard in clear sight of the interstate that made me very uncomfortable... I dont anymore believe the dopehead killed them kids than i believe that i killed Cock Robin... There seems to be some very wrong things showin up in lots of places over there; but that's just me... After all, im a pretty suspicious old coot....   This one will be very interesting to watch...   suspicious leroy

 29. It's good to see that not everyone has been drinking this early in the day. It seems that as we age, people get so caught up reminiscing about the so called "good old days" that they forget that we have always lived in a violent world. I guess that it's just more terrifying when the thing that you fear most causes you to lose sleep at night. ;)

 30. This is something I forgot to mention and I don't think anyone else mentioned it but I just did this a couple days ago and I didn't do it because I don't feel secure because I am a good shot with any of my weapons. I did it in hopes of never needing to actually use them. I have motion sensor lighting put on my out side of m home. It now lights up all sides of my home and only cost about $150.00 and I think is was a very good investment. A bad guy depends a lot of the cover of darkness and when that is taken away from him or them they will flee in most cases , I would say 95% of the time flee the area to get out of the light. In the light they are a clear and present target...............jmho

 31.   I keep thinking that, too.  On the other hand...   When we were younger, my sister had a pony that was calm and sweet as could be when she was riding it, when you were just standing around petting it or so on.  However, it hated having the bridle/bit put on and would pitch a fit whenever you tried.  One day, when I was about sixteen or so, I was trying to hold it still while dad put the bridle on.  It ended up raring up on its hind legs and taking me with it - which caused it to pitch us both over backward.  The back of my head hit a rock so hard that my mom heard the 'thump' from about thirty yards away.  After the adrenaline rush went away, I got a little woozy but never lost conciousness.    There was also a time when my sister was angry at me and she broke a broom handle across the back of my shoulders, neck and head.  She ran away when I turned around and growled, "Dammit, that hurt!"   For that matter, in a case of mistaken identity (some guy hated one of dad's brothers and mistook dad for him - dad didn't even know the guy) some guy once hit my dad across the forehead with something - he was never sure exactly what because the guy just hit him out of nowhere with no warning but dad thought it was probably a bottle - that caused enough damage dad had to have stitches.  From what I heard, that was the only hit dad took - and the other guy ended up in the hospital.   I am nowhere near the level of badassitude that my dad was but the point is that my head is pretty hard and I come from a long line of hard heads.  I'm not sure one of those little punks could knock me out with just one punch and I wouldn't be inclined to let him have a second try.

 35. I can't second the shotgun advice enough.  No need to get all tactical and get something you don't really need, one of the ones you have lying around may work.  A pump action in 20 or 12 gauge with a wooden stock and a 18-20" barrell is perfect.  Heavy enough to absorb recoil, but short enough to maneuver around tigt spaces.  I like shotguns because of their versatility.  You can load with birdshot, buckshot, or slugs.  I'll probably get laughed at but I like birdshot for in home defense, it is super deadly at 3-5 yards (come on how for are you really going to be shooting indoors?)  Yet at the same time it's not hardly going to penetrate walls and if it does the likelyhood of it having enough energy to seriously harm someone on the other side of the wall is slim.

 36. Link:  The "Japanese Winchester" thing caught my eye... In the long ago, Browning imported some absolutely beautiful winchester 92 action rifles in 44 mag and 357... They were all 16 inch carbines and were absolute works of art...We have one on the 44 mag carbines and it shoots like a dream.... My guess is that SKB built them for Browning.... If the Winchesters are built by SKB (...or whoever built the Brownings...); they will be a real rifle...  As to the others: ive not shot, but have handled the ubertis.... They are an excellent rifle....   Good luck, leroy

 39. Sounds like you've got your head right on the matter and capable of making the right choices for your family. The fact that your actively seeking information bodes very well. To throw my two cents in, I would stop feeling overly anxious about your upcoming trip as though it were some kind of big deadline. You'll set yourself up for failure, what your talking about is an involved, lengthy process. At least it should be. I might have missed this earlier, but do you have any trigger time on either pistols? If not I would practice safe operation (firing) them both and see if you have a preference to one over the other once you take loading out of the equation for the Glock. If you like the revolver best, then fine. Continue to get as much practice as time and money allow before your trip. Buy a speed loader to have a ready reload handy, and keep your loaded revolver at home in the bedroom. Once you get home for the day keep it on you if you wish, or keep it in the room, whatever feels right. Whenever you find the chance for some good training, get some. And remember, the odds are astronomically huge that you will NEVER NEED your weapon, which is not to say you should not be prepared, and vigilant, more to hopefully ease some of the nerves your feeling about the whole thing. Also number 1 most important, you can't be afraid of your gun. Respectful, absolutely. But afraid? No. Try carrying your gun around the house with you unloaded as much as possible. Familiarize yourself self with it and you'll be much more comfortable. You need to reprogram your brain to think if it not so much as "a gun" and more so as a tool. A very deadly, very specific tool, but no different at the end if the day than a hammer. Also your kids are about the perfect age to start reinforcing gun safety.

 41. This got me wondering exactly how old mine was, I knew it was mid 70's because I still have Pappaw's receipt somewhere. Googled how to age them and it's a 1977. Pappaw never hunted with this particular Marlin 336, only sighted it in, and it sat in the gun case until I got it in 2001 when he died. Killed my first buck with it also, pretty awesome!!!   Oh, and in case anyone else doesn't know how to do it:   Take the first 2 numbers in the serial number and subtract those numbers from 100 and it will give you the date. Example , if your first 2 numbers are 24 your rifle was made in 1976.

 45. CVA Optima .50cal Dave and others....I had a HECK of a hunt today! One of THE BEST hunts I have been on in a long time! I was hunting over a wheat/clover field about 200 yards as the crow flies from a bedding area. Its about an acre plot as well so its not too big. I was hunting out of a RedNeck Hunting Blind in a very comfortable chair. Anyways, my day started with a 3pt buck that came cruising through. I was able to glass him for a bit with my Nikon Monarch 5's binoculars. Beautiful animal! Then a lone doe came out about 15 minutes later. She was tearing into the clover. My goal this year is to only kill does to help reduce our deer heard and balance the doe/buck sex ratio. Anyways, I thought about taking her, which would be my first with a Muzzleloader, and decided not to because I was a little afraid it might be a button buck (turns out it was a doe). So I decided to wait and I am GLAD I DID! So I look up and see a big bodied deer on the edge of the woods. Nikon Monarch's indicated it was a 2.5 year old buck with 4 on one side and atypical with 2 on the other. He was STARING HER DOWN. He wanted her so bad. He ended up bedding down on the edge of the woods just watching her for like 10 minutes. THEN he got up and started making a scrape! Thrashing his antlers around on this overhanging limb, hoofing the ground and then taking a wicked piss right on the center. Then he took a few steps towards her and started grunting at her over and over. He ran like 3 steps to her and she ran a bit but still for the most part ignored him. Then once he was in the middle of the field, he bedded down again! Then more time passed and she wandered off and he followed in hot pursuit. Then I started hearing turkeys purring. A group of like 9 gobblers came out right by my stand. So awesome! Then after they ran off a group of 3 deer came out. A mom, and two fawns, one of which actually was a button buck! So I ended up taking out the mom. I cleaned her up and gave her to some Mexicans that were working on my FIL's farm house and they were very thankful and excited for her! What a hunt!!! All I had was my iphone 4s, so sorry about all the crappy photos.
