  1. My wife, daughter, nephew, and myself all head to Waffle House this evening for supper. As I pull in I notice the same front plate on a Suburban that has always been on the front of my Dad's vehicles "Once a Marine, Always a Marine". I get the same proud grin every time I see it, or any military branch plate. We walk in and I see the older Marine sitting at a table by himself wearing his Vietnam Veteran cap and walk directly to him to thank him for his service. My daughter and nephew followed and thanked him as well and we all shook his hand. He smiled, thanked us, and wished us a good evening. When we sat down, I waved his waitress over and before I could say anything she walked up, smiled, and said "You want his check don't you?". I guess she could see how proud we all were to thank this man for all he'd done. As we finished our meal, I just thought about all of our veterans and how I wish I could buy every single one of them a meal and how it's the least we could do. As we were getting up to pay, he was leaving as well and had just been told that we'd taken care of his check. He walked up to us, leaning on a cane, and I wish y'all could have seen the smile on his face. It was heart warming. He thanked us, and said told us that it was a blessing to him. I told him Thank You and that he was a blessing to us and that MANY people are so proud of all that vets give and wished him a "God bless you Sir".    One of the greatest things about this forum is that I know we all think a lot of our vets and have a lot of members who are vets too. I also want to take this time to thank you all for everything you have done and do everyday.  :usa:   I've always respected what the men and women of our armed forces risk and give up for their country. But as I've gotten older, it sinks in even more. God Bless the USA and all those who fight for her!

  3.   Cool.  That way I can rationalize checking this thread numerous times throughout the day.  Every day.  I can't believe I've gotten myself so excited about a knife.

  4. My advice... buy a basic, complete upper and lower (or whole rifle) and shoot the piss out of it until you notice improvements that can be made by changing out parts for reliability and ergonomics. I promise that within a couple years (or less) that rifle will be part of you... then, you'll know what you want to build. Sounds like a lot of time invested, but that's way better than spending a ton of money on a setup that doesn't work, or fit you, before you are accustomed to the platform.

  5. Once payments close on the 9th, I will be sending Pro Tech the money to get started. They have to pay a set up fee to get the logo done and to save you all money we will be doing it all at once. Just in case there are more than 50 orders Once production starts on the knives I will update the thread with pictures as they are sent to me

  9. After numerous problems with my Kahr I finally gave in and bought a Glock 26. First 9mm I've ever owned and I have to say I love it. Over 200 rounds with zero issues. I now know why so many people love them, and my wife's already eying one too.

  10. The Lorcin threads reminded me of this. About two years ago a Lady Friend of mine mentioned that she had a .38 snubbie, but had never fired it. She asked me if I might give her a few lessons and take her to the range. Naturally, I said yes. Told her to come to my house, bring her gun and I would teach her the basics before going to the range. When the appointed day came, she showed up with this. :stunned: :squint: :puke: :wall: :censored:  I really hated to hurt her feelings, but I sure couldn't let her shoot that thing either. To further complicate matters, she unfortunately lived in rather unfavorable area. So I did the only thing I could do. I traded her a well used, but perfectly servicable S&W Model 10 I had for her Unfired, NIB collectors item. I think it was one of the best trades I ever made. ;) BTW: she turned out to be a quick study and did quite well with the Model 10.

  12.   I do. Conflicted on it myself a bit. However, if local jurisdictions cannot allow something that's against state law, why should they be allowed to bar something that is allowed by state law? And I see no justification for the age of the local law to bear into it at all, myself.   Now, the whole question of whether some TN state laws are unconstitutional under its own constitution is another discussion.   - OS

  13. For the last 14 years I have been traveling all over the world for work. I can not count the times that I run into Soldiers on their way to or back from combat. Every time that I get the opportunity I thank them. Sometimes by picking up their tabs at a food joint or buying them a beer, I always do what I can. The look of gratitude on the faces when I thank them for their service and for keeping my family safe is more heartwarming and rewarding than anything I can think of, More than once I have given up a first class ticket and taken their coach seats on flights May God bless all of you who have served our wonderful country!

  14. They are not going to advertise taking away authority from local jurisdictions. ;)   Think of it what you will, I'm a bit conflcted on the issue myself, but I simply don't approve of centralizing authority,   City is to State as State is to Federal Government.  Get my drift?

  18. Prag, thanks for the kind words, it was a pleasure meeting you and Jericho.   This was my 4th and 5th training sessions with Randy, so any review I add will appeared biased, but here it goes:   What's in it for me: as the host of any SI training event, your fee is waived. That's it. No kick backs, no free ammo, no free t-shirt.   The instructor: Randy is very much a low-key, non Type-A kind of guy. Best way to describe his style: teaches doesn't preach, shows doesn't tell. He uses just enough humor to create a fun and relaxed training environment. I will say  Randy doesn't need to brag about skill, he can "do" but is not a showoff! Randy also shared with us the instructors he seeks out for continuing ed so he can be a better teacher today than yesterday.   The venue: my in-laws had the shooting area perfect for us and the weather was great. I always provide a pop-up shelter and table - it makes a difference to have some shade.   Shotgun day. I am more practical than tactical. I ran my 870 Tactical with a front bead sight, $14 Gander Mtn sling and pants with big pockets for extra ammo. I also have a good belt (leather 5.11 Tactical) I was a little jealous as the other students had much cooler shotguns with accessories - side saddles, improved sights/optics,  etc. harness systems for dump / shell bags, fancier slings, etc. Did I feel out of place - not at all. Did my bare bones Remington do the job - yes and flawlessly. I did learn the pull of my shotgun is too long, especially when transitioning from a ready position to my shoulder. Need to cut it down to 12.5" - 13" from the factory 14" - 14.5". I handled Randy's pump with a 13" pull and it was easier to get consistent placement when brought to my shoulder. Am I more comfortable and confident with my shotgun - yes, do I better understand how to utilize a shotgun in a fight, either from a static position or moving - yes. We also learned how to transition from shotgun to handgun and started the habit of automatically working the slide immediately after firing and topping off.   Handgun day. Only 3 students, not good for Randy's pocket, good for us as we got more personal attention. Once again, I'm not tactical, same 5.11 belt, N82 Tactical holster for my P-01 SDP and a High Noon Hidden Ally for my MK9. Started out with PESTS EAT FAST or how to avoid and if it goes bad how to win a fight. Excellent refresher during dry work, grip, sight picture, trigger control and reset. Moved onto draw stroke, all the while, slow is smooth, smooth becomes fast. Live fire exercises were awesome, Prag brought some steels which added a neat dimension to the experience - paper is static, steel falls down. Never though I could hit a target 3 times before it hit the ground. A few things I learned: the sweat protection offered by the N82 Tactical holster is perfect, 2 eight hour days and the back of the holster was soaking wet - no transfer to my pistol. The sweat shield does make it more difficult to get a consistent, good grip on my pistol, so you do have to concessions. I need to work on my transition from DA to SA on the SDP for consistent first shot placement. I will also give a strong endorsement to the MK9 for shootability, it eats up the recoil, is fun to shoot, flawless operation and accurate. The downside are the 6 / 7 round mags which are NOT drop free. With multiple BGs and a low-cap handgun you may have some big pucker action...   We also did some alternative sight indexing, meaning you are aware of the sights, but at 3 - 7 yards, a perfect sight picture is desired but not necessarily critical for getting rounds on target --- no we did not learn "point shooting"!!!   The last thing to mention is SI teaches "explode off the X" or simply move from your original zip code while drawing and be in a new zip code when you fire.  They give the building blocks from a static position so when you do move, you have the confidence and are able to get rounds on target.   As always, I enjoyed the sessions and feel I am better equipped today than before to handle a close encounter of the bad kind, I strongly endorse Randy Harris as my "go to guy" and lastly if you do carry a handgun please seek out continuing ed / ongoing training from a top tier professional expert in the field!

  19.   How would anyone know the homeowner were 'waiting for them' unless the homeowner either   a.  told someone beforehand that he/she planned to do so or b.  confessed after the fact that he/she had been doing so?   As far as parking his truck in a different place, I know of no law against doing so as long as it isn't parked illegally.  I also know of no law requiring someone to vacate their own home if they suspect a burglar/home invader might be coming by.  To my mind, the bottom line is the homeowner is home and the intruders break in leading to an assumption of justifiable use of lethal force.   Setting up a comfy chair and a tape recorder is going too far and looks like premeditation.  Delivering a coup de grace once the intruder is down looks like murder.  Simply not going out of one's way to be gone when intruders break in or to make sure the intruders know when one is home, however, wouldn't be enough to get me to agree to a 'guilty' verdict if I were on the jury.

  25. I'll say it again,.. a good notebook and lots of meticulous notes every time you sit down to the bench....and always double check settings DO NOT rely on memory there's alot of difference between a charge of 4.7gr Bullseye and 7.4gr Bullseye for example and some of the number powders look similar but are vastly different in "personality"   I think and close enough  are words that should never be used while at said bench it is pretty black and white either perfectly right or perfectly wrong   any of those press kits are a good starting point   I have in my "toolbox" a Lyman and RCBS single stage and a Dillon 450 with powder upgrade kit  and they all make top shelf ammo though I lean to RCBS or Dillon for my dies I do use LEE for my .223/5.56  my 10mm set uses dies form 3 different mfgs.    a good solid bench to mount the press to with good lighting and a separate shelf for the scale and if it is digital no fluorescent lighting as it will cause variances I use 2 beam scales and check weights to verify often   case lube for rifles is pretty much mandatory and optional for pistol cases you can make your own for pennies using alcohol and lanolin and a dollar store spray bottle    Adopt the 1 powder 1 bullet on the bench policy keep all other components separated from the table you really don't want to mix powders the results are unpredictable and usually not good.   When I started out my Dad had the 15 year old me write out a Loading Plan  basically a sheet of paper with powder and charge weight, bullet and primers along with any press settings (OAL,Crimp) he would check it and we would double check charge weight against the established loading manual and that sheet hung near the press until after loading then it was put into a loose leaf binder and went to the range with us so I could fill out any range notes.      This practice has kept me from KABOOMING for close to 30 years now.  I have loaded bad ammo we all do at some point  a crimp setting off, short or long OAL etc. which brings me to the next piece of equipment  a Bullet Puller  you will use it eventually so go buy one when you get your press I think every press should come with one.....   Always keep in mind what you are doing has certain risks, like anything else in life if done right can be enjoyed for years  done wrong you end up in the ER or worse.   I wish you good times and enjoyment in your new hobby,   John

  28. Honestly for those of you thinking of buying a second one, it will be an investment, down the road I guarantee you with all the feedback that everyone who purchased one will leave, it will leave a huge desire for those who have not bought one in the first place therefore leaving you room to make a profit from it. I have personally seen this on nearly every forum knife that I was involved with especially when they are ProTech knives and this will be extremely special!

  39. I love stories like this. Nice show of respect. :usa: :usa:   My wife and i were on vacation and visited a local watering hole one evening. I noticed a older gentleman across the bar in a leather jacket with military patches. He was sitting alone so i told the bar tender that we wanted to pick up his tab. About a hour later, after a modest 2 beers, the man found out his tab was covered. He walked over and sat down next to me and my wife. We spent the next two hours listening to incredible stories of his past. It was almost like he had waited years for someone to listen to him.   Around 1:00, we parted ways. It was a very moving experience for me. It was much like talking to either of my deceased grandfathers who served. Then, to my surprise, the manager came over to talk to us. He said the guy had came to that bar alone for the last five years and had never talked to anyone. He covered our dinner and bar tab and thanked us for taking the time to talk to the "old grumpy vet".    These guys are out there. They hold a great deal of history that will be gone in a few years. I encourage anyone who can to engage a vet in conversation. They often provide a good example of what being an "American" is all about!

  41. A few thoughts.... "Finishing Shot"? That's all I needed to hear to know this guy had crossed the line from self defense to execution. Premeditated? No. At least no more than you or I are premeditating violence against an intruder. The perpetrators had a choice whether or not to engage in criminal behavior, and as such are subject to any and all consequences for their actions, epecially while engaging in them. What this guy did wrong was not to shoot intruders in his house, or be prepared for them in response to previous criminal activity... His mistake was choosing to use deadly force after the threat was eliminated, out of vengeance or anger. That is not justifiable, morally or legally, and he should have gotten murder in the second degree. I sincerely hope that I am never the victim of actual or attempted violence by a minor, there is never a winner.

  46. Palmetto State has daily deals that are tough to beat! You have to check everyday as the deals change but they had lowers a while back for like $49 which is going to be all but impossible to beat. My best bit of advice would be to spend some time figuring out exactly what you will use this rifle for, shooting beer cans in the field, plinking at the range, serious training, hunting, etc... Knowing that will really help in building your parts list (the hard part for me) because it sucks to spend a bunch of money going one direction only to decide you really wanted "that" handguard rather than the one you bought and now have to sell and take a hit on it. If you can find a member in your area that's willing to come lend a hand when the parts all come in that would be awesome.
