  1. This would be a skinner/camp knife I guess. It's made from 1/8" 1095 carbon steel. The overall length is 9" with the blade itself being about 4". It has a RC of 59. It has jimping and a bit of filework on the spine and brown micarta scales accented with with G10 and white G10 liners. It has brass pins and a large brass lanyard hole.

  6. JMO, I don't believe you could make a better choice for a first gun. You bought a good revolver in a configuration that gives you 2 caliber choices, and a very durable, well made, and highly thought of(not that it makes any difference) pistol.   Congratulations

  7. As most of us have found there is no perfect gun; it is application driven. That’s why so many of us have multiple guns, because we have multiple applications. It sounds like your main concern is concealment. To get concealment you have to give up capacity and barrel length. There is a chance you will be in a shooting AND need more than five or six rounds, but it’s up there with winning the lottery or being struck by lightning. It also won’t be a target gun; that is a different application and requires a different gun. You can’t go wrong in a revolver with a steel or stainless J-frame; it has owned the revolver concealment application for decades. I have a model 36 I have had for nearly 40 years and still carry. However if I were buying today I would get a model 60 so I could use .357 if I wanted to, it also won’t have finish issues. You also mentioned the Shield. As you can see from the replies and other threads it is very popular. It’s my favorite “Sub Compact” because I could get it in .40S&W. Neither will impress anyone as a target or range gun. If you want that get a S&W 686 L-frame, it will shoot the center 10 ring out of a target at 25 yards; then you just have to find a way to conceal it. You are going to need more than one gun. Just decide if you want the carry gun or the range gun first. You can buy and sell guns without losing a dime. The only other hobby I have had where I could do that was Corvettes.

  10. Those wooden magmas on j frames are sexy but don't do a lot for recoil. I will agree on everything, recoil is weird. A pf9 may be the worst recoiling handgun I have ever shot, a shield may be the lightest in 9mm without getting super big. The LCR may recoil less than an airweight come to think of it.

  12. Having carried both a Kel-Tec P3AT (the gun the LCP was copied from) and a S&W 940 (a 9mm J-frame)... I'd recommend a Kahr P380; with that you'll get the accuracy, quality, trigger and price of the Smith with the portability and controllability of the .380.

  13. Sorry to hear that happened, especially at an event that's supposed to be all about community and all. Even if the other people weren't the type of scumbags to hit a parked car and leave, they'd have filed a report if their vehicle had any appreciable damage and wasn't some hunk of junk. So, at least you know what kind of folks you're probably dealing with.

  16. Been looking for a decent holster for my newly aquired G34 IDPA gun and not having much luck. Well I say that, every holster I strapped on felt like I had a shoe box stuck on my hip! So I ordered the stuff and this is what I have so far. Still need some cleanup and polishing the edges but I think I'm gonna like it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  21.   Very good advice.  Thanks.  I actually bought my first gun recently, a Ruger GP-100.  I plan to use it for home defense (.357) and range practice (.38).  So I already have that base covered.  My next purchase will be exclusively for concealed carry purposes.

  24. Not a gunsmith, but thinking that soaking won't cure "internal corrosion" if there is any; that only disassembly and cleaning/replacing of parts can fix corrosion. Considering your problem and the age of the gun, a thorough cleaning might be in order. I wouldn't soak a revolver in anything.

  26. Go up and tell any game warden you killed a snake in your yard on the road or where ever and 100 to 1 he will ticket you for an illegal kill. If he takes his job more seriously he may even take you to jail. I was told by a game warden once if its not listed to be hunted as game its then illegal to kill any wildlife. 30. This may be your personal experience but I consider it some of the most accurate information posted in this thread. Even in a snub nose 38spl in 20-24oz gun is a tack driver. You sacrifice a lot to carry a 13-15 oz gun.

  31. The P380 is much better finished than the CW380, also has a different barrel. I have no complaints from mine, it goes everywhere with me. I havent even laid hands on a G42 yet so all I can say is from pictures it appears bigger. Big enough I personally wouldnt try to pocket carry it.
    1 point
  32. I have owned a cw380, it was ok. The G42 is quite a bit bigger but not in a bad way. As far as shooting the two, the Glock is probably a better shooter. The G42 and the M&P Shield honestly conceal about as well as a j frame or LCR. The G42 I have handled was a friends who has had a little bit less than 100% reliability. I can tell you though, the Shield is a lot better of a package than the G42, more powerful round with more capacity, without getting much larger. The Shield may be a better shooter as well. Call me crazy though, my Shield is the second one I own and I would trade it in a heartbeat for another good j frame, even though I own several. My complaints on the Kahr was it had an extremely tight chamber not liking any reloads and just had rough edges. I used to get cuts just handling it, I actually preferred a LCP over the Kahr.

  38. You be surprised how much I get to witness my last name being butchered and be considered a hispanic because of it. Thats probably the reason I still dont go and get a carry permit. I would be thinning out the herd of all the idiots and bigots. But it would be considered mass murder by the media and would cast another evil shadow on firearms. So I will settle with trying to end them with a single well placed punch.

  41. Dean A. Mellberg shoots and kills four people and wounds 22 at Fairchild Air Force Base hospital on June 20, 1994 with his AK type rifle.   His mass shooting was ended by Senior Airman Andrew Brown, age 25 with the 92nd Air Force Security Police Squadron.   While patrolling base housing areas on his bicycle a quarter mile away, he received the call over his radio and responded.   When he spotted the gunman some 70 yards away he ditched his bicycle and ordered Mellberg to drop his weapon.   When Mellberg turned and shot at Brown, he crouched and engaged him with his M9 Beretta.  Of four rounds fired, two missed the gunman, one hit his shoulder and a final round struck his head ending the fight.   If I recall correctly he did suffer PTSD after the incident not for ending Mellberg's life, but because he wished he was able to get there faster IOT save more lives.  I can only imagine how out of breath he was while making the shot after hauling ass on a bicycle, and 70 yards is a hell of a shot even when you're not winded.   I have a hard time getting all my rounds center mass at 25 yards while I'm not under stress in the comfort of a shooting range. I remember a story of a man who was shooting an enfield rifle from his porch at police officers.  One of them had only his sidearm to respond, and he was a competitive pistol shooter, but wasn't experienced at shooting at the long range he was faced with.  IIRC after the shootout ended they found a nice tight group of impacts that were about a foot too high because he wasn't sure what the holdover would be.   Other scenarios I can think of include shootings at theatres (if you're in the back row and they're near the front it's easily over 25 yards), across a gas station lot, some places of work, and so on. You just never know.   Obviously as a civilian it's not our responsibility to end killing sprees, despite being justified in protecting a third party.  And in some circumstances it may be better not to draw at all.  However as a community carry permit owners in general tend to be people who, by their very nature, want to help others.  To protect ourselves and our family is our first priority, but when something goes down there are a brave few who will run towards the threat rather than away if it means saving lives.   The odds of you needing a firearm in the first place are thankfully small, and the odds of you needing to be able to make a longer distance shot is even smaller still, but I can't imagine who ends up having to do so wishes they had LESS practice at longer ranges.  Even if you never need it, it's good to know yourself and know your weapon -- and more importantly know your limits.   Be an expert with your gun, know it's ins and outs, and learn what you can and can't do with it.

  43. Scary thing's happened in Canada (From another forum)         In the process of banning some questionable firearms, they used it as an opportunity to ban a whole class of firearms.  Apparently in the confusion that followed, there were some clarifications, that gun owners would be granted a two or five year amnesty period (depending on which article you read) during which time they won't be criminalized.   http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/swiss-arms-rifle-owners-granted-amnesty-by-government-1.2558585   While the country in question is Canada, it's not that big a leap to think someone would pull something like this here.

  44. Strongly disagree with the perception that the Ruger trigger is better than the Smith trigger. Of course, all of us (especially me) are just forum jockeys so who really cares what we say. I have owned both... I still have the Smith double action revolvers. No more Rugers. The nice thing about the Smith guns is that you can just about find anything you want from Scandium to Aluminum to Steel for whatever you deem to be a good balance of weight for shooting comfort vs light for carry comfort. They offer more options between the nice but heavy SP101 and the light butt ugly LCR. I am not very recoil sensitive. 357s out of a steel snubbie don't bother me, but even I can't take more than a cylinder of hot 357s from a Scandium gun. 38 +p, on the other hand, is fine by me no matter what platform it comes flying out of. More than anything, +p seems just a bit louder with a touch more snap. As others have said, you also have a lot more aftermarket holster/accessory options with the country's #1 carry gun for decades running, the S&W J frame. That's this forum jockey's useless opinion. ;-)

  47. My opinion is, in the end he was just being arrested for drunkenness, or whatever. If he struggles a little so what. If he wiggles free, so what. If he was present a violent danger to the officer and others, ok, but I have my doubts about that. I realize he could try to grab a weapon and all that. But he was clearly in control by two other officer before the choke was applied. I feel it was excessive and glad JJ acted with authority.
