  1. Last weekend I saw something at Larry's Pistol & Pawn Shop that sparked my interest. The occasion was our 15th anniversary and I was looking for for a little something extra for my wife Julie. What I came across was a 100,000-volt pocket/purse-sized Taser. The effects of the Taser were supposed to be short lived, with no long term adverse affect on your assailant, allowing her adequate time to retreat to safety...?? WAY TOO COOL!!!       Long story short, I bought the device and brought it home...I loaded two AAA batteries in the darn thing and pushed the button. Nothing! I was disappointed. I learned, however, that if I pushed the button and pressed it against a metal surface at the same time, I'd get the blue arc of electricity darting back and forth between the prongs. AWESOME!!! Unfortunately, I have yet to explain to Julie what the burn spot is on the face of her microwave. Okay, so I was home alone with this new toy, thinking to myself that it couldn't be all that bad with only two AAA batteries, right?    There I sat in my recliner, my cat Gracie looking on intently (trusting little soul) while I was reading the directions and thinking that I really needed to try this thing out on a flesh & blood moving target. I must admit I thought about zapping Gracie (for a fraction of a second) and then thought better of it. She is such a sweet cat.     But, if I was going to give this thing to my wife to protect herself against a mugger, I did want some assurance that it would work as advertised.  Am I wrong? So, there I sat in a pair of shorts and a tank top with my reading glasses perched delicately on the bridge of my nose, directions in one hand, and Taser in another. The directions said that:  A one second burst would shock and disorient your assailant.    A two second burst was supposed to cause muscle spasms and a major loss of bodily control; and  A three second burst would purportedly make your assailant flop on the ground like a fish out of water.      Any burst longer than three seconds would be wasting batteries. All the while I'm looking at this little device measuring about 5" long, less than 3/4 inch in circumference (loaded with two itsy, bitsy AAA batteries) pretty cute really, and thinking to myself, "no possible way"!!      What happened next is almost beyond description, but I'll do my best. I'm sitting there alone, Gracie looking on with her head cocked to one side so as to say, "Don't do it stupid", reasoning that a one second burst from such a tiny lil ole thing couldn't hurt all that bad...I decided to give myself a one second burst just for heck of it.  I touched the prongs to my naked thigh, pushed the button, and ..... HOLY MOTHER OF GOD. WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION. WHAT THE ....!!!! I'm pretty sure Hulk Hogan ran in through the side door, picked me up in the recliner, then body slammed us both on the carpet, over and over and over again.     I vaguely recall waking up on my side in the fetal position, with tears in my eyes, body soaking wet, both nipples on fire, testicles nowhere to be found, with my left arm tucked under my body in the oddest position, and tingling in my legs! The cat was making meowing sounds I had never heard before, clinging to a picture frame hanging above the fireplace, obviously in an attempt to avoid getting slammed by my body flopping all over the living room. Note- If you ever feel compelled to "mug" yourself with a Taser one note of caution:      There is NO such thing as a one second burst when you zap yourself! You will not let go of that thing until it is dislodged from your hand by violent thrashing about on the floor!! A three second burst would be considered conservative! A minute or so later (I can't be sure, as time was a relative thing at that point),        I collected my wits (what little I had left), sat up and surveyed the landscape. My bent reading glasses were on the mantel of the fireplace.*The recliner was upside down and about 8 feet or so from where it originally was. *My triceps, right thigh and both nipples were still twitching. *My face felt like it had been shot up with Novocain, and my bottom lip weighed 88 lbs. *I had no control over the drooling. *Apparently I had crapped in my shorts, but was too numb to know for sure, and my sense of smell was gone.    *I saw a faint smoke cloud above my head, which I believe came from my hair. I'm still looking for my testicles and I'm offering a significant reward for their safe return! My wife can't stop laughing about my experience, loved the gift and now regularly threatens me with it! If you think education is difficult, try being stupid!!!!

  2. Comms absolutely right. The Feds had every opportunity to serve a warrant in town. They chose not to do so. THey wanted to make a statement, "We're in charge & don't you ever forget it". That's what they did. Koresh was not saint, but he was made the scapegoat. Same situation at Ruby Ridge with Randy Weaver & family. Bunch of jack booted thugs.

  3. I just put together a last ditch emergency 'better than having nothing' pocket kit based around an Altoids Arctic tin. These tins are smaller than a regular Altoids tin and open at the (flip top) endcap rather than across the body of the tin. Compared to a regular Altoids tin: This is in no way an 'extensive' kit but it is pretty compact and fits easily in the pocket of the Dockers I wear to work. The original intent was just to use the tin as a small, pocket fire kit for EDC but once I got started it grew a bit beyond that. By filling the tin and then adding a few things to the outside of it I was actually able to fit a decent amount of supplies. Altoids 'Arctic' mints tin with match striker glued inside lid x 1 Contents: Small piece of fatwood x 1 Waterproof matches x 5 Orange bank line, ~5ft. on metal bobbin Acetaminophen 500mg each (extra strength) x 4 Caffeine tablets 200mg each x 4 Diphenhydramine HCI (generic Benadryl) 25mg each x 3 Promethazine (generic for Phenergan) 25mg each x 4 Band-aid plus antibiotic 1 inch x 3 inch x 1 Band-aid plus antibiotic 3/4 inch x 3 inch x 1 Small fishing float x 1 Fishing line, 10lb. monofilament, ~24 ft. on metal bobbin Fish hooks, baitholder size 6 x 3 Fish hooks, baitholder size 4 x 3 Round split shot sinkers size 3/0 x 6 'Bream Getter' artificial lure x 1 Small 'zipper' closed plastic bags x 2 (one containing medications and one containing fishing gear.) Attached to tin exterior: Piece of adhesive backed 180 grit ceramic blend sanding disk stuck to side of tin for possible field maintenance of knife edge (hopefully I'd at least have my EDC Spyderco Resilience with me.) Black bank line x 10ft Bright green, narrow Duck brand tape - basically narrow duct tape - x 3ft (thin plastic film from sanding disk placed over sandpaper to protect surface from tape adhesive) 3 inch curved upholstery needle x 1 Jute twine x 3ft Mini Bic disposable lighter x 1 I made a conscious decision not to include a blade in the kit. I did, however, modify one side at the bottom of the tin so that it is sharp enough to easily abrade through the fishing line and can, with a few passes across, abrade through the bank line. I did this by crushing the rolled edge flat using pliers on a multitool and then sharpening it a little with sandpaper, a diamond stone and a leather belt. It isn't really 'knife blade' sharp, more like the level of sharpness left on a can lid by a standard, electric can opener. One of the bicycle inner tubes I bought for making ranger bands is a little wider than standard. I cut two, wide pieces from it and with some effort and a bit of foul language was able to stretch them - one horizontally and one vertically - around the whole setup. This should make the package fairly water resistant if not outright waterproof: Side view Front view The final package is pretty small. In fact, I don't think it is as wide as a pack of cigarettes and is probably about as 'thick' as a cigarette hard pack with a Bic lighter in front of it. My hands aren't small but they are also a long way from 'Shaquille O'Neal' hands and it easily fits in my palm: I may eventually make a paracord pouch to carry it in, possibly with enough room to include a micro multi-tool or something similar in the pouch alongside the kit. I am under no illusions that this is a fully outfitted survival kit. I carry a lot more things in a SOG slingpack that I EDC to work and most, other places. As I mentioned, above, this is simply a 'better than having nothing' setup I can have in my pocket in case I don't have access to anything else. I wanted to post this up because I think the various commercial and DIY kits are interesting and I hadn't seen many pocket kits based around this type of Altoids tin or done exactly this way.

  4.   He also walked back and forth to town, by himself all the time.  The feds, cops, ATF, sheriff and the locals all knew this.  They could have picked him up ANYTIME they wanted too.  He was not hiding.   They wanted to make an example of him and his compound.  Period.  It really is that simple.

  5. Good God. I miss America.   Where the hell did it go?   I remember watching (on TV) the "compound" burn like it was yesterday. I don't recall anything "heroic" about it.

  6. I've got to be honest... as a father of three, one of whom is half the victim's age, I am having a really hard time with this.  I am having a terribly difficult time rectifying the base instinct I have to just say "Kill every damn last one of them" against the thin vapor of supposed moral superiority that Western culture tries so hard to smother us in that says "They aren't all murderers".   Right now, the basal instincts are winning, hard core.  I want to keep my kids home, behind locked doors, where I can protect them.  All the time.  I want to destroy the group of people that spawned this unholy monster.  I want it to be impossible for any of them to ever rise up again against us.  But none of this would bring back the child whose life was lost.  None of that would ease the pain those parents are feeling.   Sooner or later this is showing up in our streets, in our towns, in our cities.  They know the thing that we value most as a society is our children, and that's where they will hit us.  But we continue to usher them in because we feel safe in our moral superiority.   God help us.

  7. Since when has being a sociopath or a nut case been a crime in this country? If Koresh was still here, I wouldn't whizz on his head if his hair was in fire but I have no respect for anyone who just blindly followed orders and moved in to kill them. I would say the agents got what they were asking for. I feel they were making a power statement by trying to make an example out of the Branch Dividians. It failed miserably and people needlessly died for it. Screw the ATF agents involved and any and all of the cowards involved,in the pisspoor decision making of that day. Agree or disagree all you like, next it could be your family stomped on. It could be your church or your group gathering. Never say it couldn't never be you. Ohh yeah, This thread reminds me. Rest in peace Vikki & Sam Weaver Burn in hell Lon Horiuchi.

  9. Two nights ago I had just left a gig in Augusta, GA and was driving back to the hotel as I was the sober one of our group and something really strange happened. We pulled up to a stop light and two lanes over from me there was a lone tricked out Chevy Impala. Big shiny rims, nice paint.. As soon as I came to a stop the passenger door opened and a man swiftly exited the vehicle. My adrenaline surged and the first thing I did was reach for my gun in my holster in the 4 o clock position, but my hand got caught in the seatbelt and I lost a split second. I was able to draw the gun safely and inconspicuously before the individual completely vacated the car and thankfully he was just going to make sure the trunk was closed. But, the situation made me nervous after looking back. When I am in my car, a pistol is always easily accessible besides the one I have holstered, but because I was driving a strange car out of town for work, things didn't go quite as practiced or as planned. Thank GOD it was a non-event, but I've known people that were murdered or beat to a pulp at random for gang initiation in New Orleans, and it just seemed like his timing was too perfect when I pulled up. It didn't feel right. The fairly liberal drummer was singing his praises for guns after he knew it would've been a gun that would've saved his ass had the situation turned ugly. Anyway, just another reminder to stay aware at ALL times, you never know when evil might be lurking around the corner.. Or at a traffic light!

  10. 82 men, women and children murdered over the suspicion of an unpaid $200 tax stamp for something that shouldn't be against the law in the first place. The Nuremberg defense doesn't hold water. The only honorable thing those four officers ever did in the employ of that organization was done that day when they got themselves killed. I imagine I am already skating on very thin ice at the moment with my comments so I think it is best if I stop now.

  11. *edited to add* the first shots fired were by the ATF and resulted in a blue on blue friendly fire caused injury. While I am a strong and vocal critic of the tactics and actions of many legitimate LE organizations, I don't wish the harm upon most officers as I do the jackboots of Burn All Toddlers First. That's because the BATF isn't in any way a legitimate LE agency. What happened in Ruby Ridge, Waco, and Fast & Furious aren't aberrations. They are only the most publicly known episodes in a pattern of behavior that goes back many decades. The wanna be Rambos over at F-troop have a long history of use of excessive violence, blank warrants, raids and imprisonment of folks over minor paperwork failures, just outright made up charges and general abuse of the public in the most sickening displays of government malfeasance. They exemplify everything that's wrong with and makes folks despise LE. When I reference Nuremberg defense not holding water, I mean it. Not just the way they enforce the laws, but the laws themselves are an immoral act of violence against the people. The Branch Davidians in Waco were as justified in their use of force in defense against the ATF as were the Jews in Warsaw ghetto uprising of 43. The ATF are our American Shutzstaffel.

  12. Stumpy points out something. A .444 sizer will size the head of the hull. You can buy a roll crimper from Ballistic products. Everything can be done by hand and in a drill press afterwards. I load .410 on occasion and do just that. Deprime with a pin and hammer on a peice of wood with a hole drilled in it. Resize. Prime on a solid piece of wood with a larger pin and hammer. Powder, wad, shot, over card and then roll crimp in a drill press. By the way, you can buy PRIMED .410 hulls from Ballistic Products with no hazmat for cheap. They were on sale last month for less than $10 per hundred. They're usually almost twice that so keep a watch out. I bought 100 primed hulls, 250 stump wads and 500 over shot cards along with my roll crimper for like $60 and half that was the stupid roll crimping tool which will last forever.

  13. I disagree with the tone of this thread.  The real bad apples in this mix were David Koresh and his leadership team.  The behavior of the Branch Davidian leadership was sick and reprehensible and most likely included crimes against children.   The ATF had a warrant to serve.  The agents who were killed serving the warrant died in the line of duty.  I appreciate their duty and acknowledge that they paid the ultimate sacrifice.  I'll also say that I have found the ATF to be completely helpful, even as they serve a president that is very, very anti gun.   The FBI started the siege.  Undoubtedly, they made mistakes.  A sad fact of life is that leadership in government seldom accepts responsibility for making mistakes.  As best I can tell, the FBI has made significant changes in response to this situation.   I don't like the government.  I don't like paying taxes.  I also recognize that as governments go, ours is better than most.     Their mistakes and lack of accepting responsibility don't change the fact that the ATF went to serve a valid warrant, that the Davidian's didn't like it, and broke out with the guns.     Looking at modern day, we see these thugs killing our police officers and are outraged.  I don't see how the Davidian's are any better.   I think we also have to remember that law enforcement is a very, very difficult job.

  14. Got one of their cheap Daily Deals Freedom stainless midlength uppers for my kids to shoot. Originally put Magpul MOE handguard on it. Later I decided to use an extra UTG Pro Slim free float handguard I had laying around. To my surprise, when I went to torque the barrel nut off, I got aggravated trying to get the barrel nut wrench to engage. Found out the barrel nut was not even hand tight and was spinning freely. I know it can happen top any builder (except RRA rockset nuts), but you may want to check your uppers. That could have been bad.[emoji15]

  15. I had an interesting problem while coaching a new shooter. She is new to handguns in particular, and a novice with long guns. The problem was regular stove pipe/FTE failures with a S&W shield 9, and also with a Sig P320 in 9mm. Nothing I suggested would cure this. My thinking was that she was limp wristing. After some very careful observation I noticed that her trigger finger was coming off the trigger on reset. As much as I had emphasized pressing the trigger she was aagressivly anticipating recoil and muzzle blast. This anticipation or pushing the gun was the cause of the stove pipe FTE. It took some time but slowing down and deliberately pressing and holding the trigger to the rear (follow through) for each shot solved the problem, 100% reliability was achieved. Speed will have to be worked on, but I don't expect that to be a problem. This isn't my idea, I remember reading it somewhere and it just clicked when I saw her pushing the gun and her hyper agressive reset. I thought that this might be helpful to others.

  16. It's not a religion it's a cult. No religion on earth would claim a pathway to God and eternal peace and paradise, and promote this behavior. AND this broad is one of many an this poor childs name would be lost on a list too long to read. Only good muzzie is a dead one. I don't care who likes that comment and who don't. They should get what they give. They give nothing to society and have nothing to offer mankind but death turmoil. Give it back to them tenfold. ....but they're not all like this....pffffttt. They prove time and time again they are.

  17. It has already happened again. A huge police presence opened fire on a crowd of bikers in Waco last summer, over a fist fight, then arrested every rider at the COC meeting, 173 total. Slapped them with million dollar bonds each and smeared them in the media to make it seem like they arrested a bunch of gang members. Those were men and women a lot like the rest of us. But for the most part nobody cares because they were biker scum. Sent from behind the anvil

  26. When I feel like I am getting ripped off my inner curmudgeon raises his ugly head.  After tonight's trip to the grocery I once again am suffering from curmudgeon overflow.  On the bright side, my wife will probably not hit me up to go with her again for a while.  Anyway, I refer to the following as examples of how we as consumers are being ripped off: Cardboard sleeves inside toilet paper and paper towel rolls are bigger around reducing amount of sheets per roll. 1/2 Gallon of ice cream is now 1.75 or 1.5 quarts Coffee containers of any brand continue to shrink and price goes up (All containers for that matter) Five pounds of sugar is no more, now 4 pounds or less We all remember how big a Baby Ruth, or any candy bar used to be Re-configured containers with indention's as handholds or visual appeal which reduces content When was the last time you saw a 50 pound bag of dog food? These are just a few examples and what started this rant was I love Claussen Kosher dills pickles.  I picked up a jar tonight and realized that the pickle spears were "floating around" in the jar with about a half inch of juice in the bottom where the spears did not even reach the bottom. They used to be packed from lid to bottom and packed so tight you had to pull the first one out with a fork and had friction between the spears to do so.  It appeared that there were at least 4 to 5 spears missing from the jar.  I looked at all the jars and they were all that way.  I put them back.  Sorry to bother you all with my rant, but my wife was tired of hearing it.

  27. Used pistol Manufacture year was 2000 - picked this up today and it's my first Hi-Power. I really like the bluing and there is not a scratch or blemish to be found. It appears to have been shot very little so much so that internals look new as well. Came with just one mag and I ordered another today. I don't have a trigger gauge to tell me lbs, but this trigger is very smooth and crisp and feels the 5-6 lb range. I'll post a range report next week when I can get to the range. Cheers!

  34. My wife had (has) some follow-through issues as well.  It took some coaching to get her to hold the trigger to the rear until the sight picture returns.  I think doing that helps keep her grip firm through recoil instead of relaxing immediately after the shot breaks.  I first noticed it in the form of her resetting her grip after every shot.  It takes some discipline to only move the trigger finger and not relax the whole hand during trigger reset.          That'd be 4 times for me as keeping both eyes open has me seeing double.

  38. So, the boys get to bragging about their hunting skills, she pulls out a picture of her most recent deer harvest, the doves she took, or the squirrels she took last weekend, and some Greenie teacher hears the conversation and here comes the SWAT team. Or, the community Doc comes to school and  the authority figures "demand" answers to their questions...know any 12 years olds that would not be intimidated to tell the truth, or do we start them young learning to lie?  I guess as we slip into a "Papers Please" society we should? We had a female Sargent in the Police Department leave her purse with a backup Glock in it in a grocery cart along with her 4 year old grand daughter who popped off a round at the Dollar Store.  Nothing was done about that, and nothing will be done about a similar instance in the future, as some are just more equal than others. This is a bad law, put forth by two real Democrats to make the life of gun owners more difficult.  The "problems" are already covered by existing law, as Omega proposed, prosecute those guilty under them.  We have enough Statist laws as it is.

  39. I was given the chance to tour this area several years ago. Our tour guide was a Texas federal judge who was very well versed in this. When the feds showed up to serve the warrant they first went to the local sheriff to inform him of this. He told them if they wanted Koresh he would just call him and have him come in as he and David played domenos fairly often. The feds told him not to bother they would handle it and the rest is history. Also within days of the end the whole place was bulldozed, buried and a chain link fence was installed around the whole place.

  40. As to the topic at hand, it's a legitimate topic for a pediatrician, but no more so than general safety in the home. It could easily be handled with statements rather than questions. That gets the information to the parents and it remains none of the Dr's business.   Examples: If you have chemicals in your home, like bleach, detergents, bug spray, or a jug of battery acid, please keep it locked up and inaccessible to your child. They don't understand that it can hurt or kill them. Please be sure to always use a child safety seat in the car. Here's a pamphlet with contact information for where you can get one at no charge if you can't afford one. Look for one with (whatever seal of approval is the one to go by these days). If you have firearms in the home, please keep them locked away from your child. Hiding it on the top shelf doesn't cut it. Kids WILL find everything in your home. Here's a pamphlet from the NRA with some suggested safety guidelines. While we're on firearms, here's another pamphlet from the NRA's Eddie the Eagle program with a child-centric approach to gun safety. even if you don't have a firearm, you still need to teach your child the information in here because you never know what they might find away from your home. Be sure to check the batteries in your smoke alarms. If you don't have smoke alarms, please get some. The local fire department usually has them for free for people in the community who can't afford them. etc.

The list goes on and on and applies to about everything we buy.  I picked up a box of Cheerios tonight and it was so thin, not to mention shorter, that I was surprised it would stand up without falling over.  It couldn't have had more than three small bowls in it, and that was the family size.   Then of course the fine print includes "contents may settle during shipment" really, half a box of air worth of settlement?
