I almost hate to add this to the mix, but I know of some who will appreciate it and a few others who will be glad it wasn't them. (This was also published in "Muzzle Blasts" magazine a few years back.) About #$%@* years ago (back when the earth was still cooling), I had the opportunity to get in on a week long survival outing. It was intended to be real live mountain man stuff with nothing to eat but what you shoot or catch or gather. This was in September of 19*#. Starting to cool, but warm enough during the day. My regular outfit back then was moccasins, breechcloth and leggings. I almost never wore a shirt. I carried my rifle and shooting bag everywhere I went. My camp name or buckskinning handle back then was "White Man who falls on Ass" although most called me "Wumwufoa", which is the phonetic pronunciation of the acronym. (W.M.W.F.O.A.) Or just "Wumwuf" for short. All in all, there were about 12 or 13 of us on this particular outing and things were really looking positive. We were camped in a primitive area, several miles from the nearest road with a couple of lean tos for shelter. We had a high of 75 degrees on the Thursday we started. And we had our guns and plenty of powder and lead... That's about as far as the positive part went... On Thursday night, it started raining. When we crawled out from under our blankets Friday morning there was 8 inches of fresh snow on the ground. But, hey! We were roughin' it like Bridger and Carson and we were in good shape! Especially, after I borrowed a buckskin shirt so my "stipples wouldn't nick out." Anyway, we were having a great time except that no one could find anything to kill! I guess the snow storm had run all the critters back into their holes. And being as how it was a wet snow, it didn't take much time to get soaked to the skin. So we spent a lot of time hunkered around the fire talking about how nice it would be not to have to spend all our time hunkering around the fire. And boy, wouldn't it be nice if a big ol' 12 course meal would wander into camp just looking for someone to eat it! It snowed another 4 inches on Saturday and we decided that maybe we oughtta' start gettin' serious about finding something to kill, before "Fat Jenkins" started getting REAL hungry. Besides being an eating machine, Fat was also one of the best stalkers I've ever known. He was 5'6" tall, nearly that wide, and could move like a ghost. He was phenomenal! Anyway, Sunday morning we split into 3 groups of 4 with one man left in camp to tend the fire and hog tie any stray 12 course meals that happened to wander by. We hunted pretty much all day long and finally managed to take 8 or 9 rabbits. The man we left in camp said he didn't see so much as an after dinner mint, let alone a 12 course banquet - We accused him of sleeping on the job. After an unfortunately light meal, supplemented with judicious applications of Taos Lightning and Grumpy's "Moon Juice", we turned in under the light of a nearly full moon. Since my leggings and borrowed shirt had become soaked, I took them off and hung them over a bush at the edge of camp, then crawled between my blankets with my rifle and shooting bag close to hand. (Like a real Mountain Man.) About 4 O'clock the next morning, I awoke to the sound of laughter. When I roused up and asked what the hell was going on, a guy we called "Stinky" pointed at a coyote running up the side of the steep hill to the west. I looked and sure as heck, it WAS funny to watch! Every few steps the poor critter would stumble like he was getting tangled up in something, and slide back down the hill a few feet. All of us were up by then, laughing like fools at the misfortune of that poor, dumb beast. Then I happened to glance at the bush where I'd left my legging's... Then I looked back at the coyote... Then back at the bush - GIMME BACK MY LEGGINS, YOU SON OF A BITCH!!!! Well, I grabbed my rifle and took off on a dead run. Behind me I could hear someone hollering "Get 'im, Wumwuf, sic 'im boy!" And raucous peels of laughter. The temperature had dropped during the night and what had been WET snow was now slightly dryer and considerably hardened ice. After falling twice I discarded my rifle, considering it to be an impediment to my progress. (Not to mention the fact that it hurt like a b*tch when I landed on it!) Having lost sight of the coyote, I had no idea that he had dropped my leggins and headed for parts unknown. The guys in camp were still hollering things like "Sic 'em, Wumwuf!" And "Yer a gainin' on 'im now, hoss!" in between snorts of laughter. I was roughly half way up the hill (a good 250 feet) when I slipped for the third (and last!) time. All I really remember is my feet going up in the air and blurry scenery. Needless to say, I came back to camp considerably faster than I left it... Luckily, my breechcloth caught on a snag on the way back down and slowed my progress enough that I didn't slide completely through camp. ...I don't remember who finally fetched my leggings for me, but I do seem to recall that it was a couple of days before I could stand to wear 'em again, what with the major league rug burns I'd picked up from sliding on the ice. The bright spot was that I killed a nice doe while laying on my blankets in camp later that morning while everyone else was out hunting. (Which served to bouy my spirits considerably, knowing that I was no longer the dumbest creature in the vacinity.) All in all, our survival outing was a success, although for some reason we never tried it again. The snow had melted almost completely by the time we hiked out, and except for the psychological ones, I have no permanent scars. Now, after a little more than thirty years, I still (as you might imagine) have yet to live this episode down. Although the fact that I don't hang around with any of those guys any longer makes the memory easier to live with. And, oh yes, someone did have the presence of mind to snap a few pictures of my wild "ride". ...But fortunately they all came out blurry... ...TS...3 points

I just talked with a member of the school board and figured out the idea behind this. They obviously couldn't just GIVE these kids a 50, because that wouldn't be fair. But it's also unfair that some kids have 100s and some kids have below passing grades. So they're going to take points from the kids with 100s and give to the kids with less. They call it a "grade tax." This way, all the kids prosper and can get into good schools. It may lower the grades of those kids with 100s, but what do they need such high grades for? Now, what are they going to do if they run out of points to redistribute and kids still aren't passing you ask?! And the answer is equally as genius. Knowing that plenty of kids have done well for several years and, for lack of a better description, "put 100s away for years," they're going to go back to those years and pull points from those previous years and give to kids now. By raising everyone's grades in this manner, the class as a whole will prosper and less kids will be forced out of high school.3 points

For me, I will be buying another Nighthawk Custom; probably a Talon just like the one I just traded away a few weeks ago - once you get into that level of 1911s it's almost impossible to say one it truly better than the other but I guess I'd give my nod to Nighthawk Custom I had an Ed Brown Executive Targer; sold it...don't really miss it. Not saying it wasn't a great 1911 but I wasn't all that impressed with it. I have a Wilson Combat CQB and it's a phenominal 1911; same with my Les Bare Thunder Ranch (which has the most incredibly light and smooth trigger I've ever had on any weapon) There are good reasons for buying a 1911 with a particular name on the side but it's not really the name...these firearms are pieces of mechanical art built by some of the best gunsmiths, not just in the area but in the country plus you have a major company behind you when you need it. .2 points

RE: The McCain "respect" thing. I think we make mistakes passing out the term "respect" in lots of cases; and the McCain thing is one of them. Its important that "respect" be passed out for action that gained it. It is not "eternal" .... . It can be lost; and that is what has happened with McCain.. Said another way, respect is earned for the actions that precipitated that "respect"... It can be lost. It is not enduring. The fact of the matter is that john mccain is an old hippie with a backbone; nothin else. I dont like hippies on principle, and i damn sure dont like MCCain. Havin said that, i held my nose and voted for him because i couldnt stand the alternative that we have now. McCain is a genuine product of the rarified atmosphere that permeates the majority of the "Inside the Beltway Crowd" and the top echelons of the military. He symbolizes all that is wrong with politics today, both within the Republican party and politics in general. He believes everything he says is right and that us delightful rustics should bow down and do what he says.. period. John McCain is exactly like John Glenn. He is a shameless politico who has used military service as a stepping stone to political debauchery. He no more is a patriot today than i am an russian cosmonaut. He is an old statist, out to tell us delightful rustics what to do and what to think. After all, he is "...The best and brightest..." and we should bow down. I say pooey. Forget it.....I aint doin it; and i aint gonna honor anyone like McCain nor let him disarm me. Remember, military service doesnt translate to patriotism. It may translate to heroism, but it does not translate to patriotism. The Hessians were german mercanaries for the British in the Revolutionary War. non believin leroy2 points

Some folks want to act as if McCain is some kind of anomaly within the Republican party but that simply is not the case. I mean, this guy was chosen as their candidate for President in the next to last election. That means enough Republicans (or, at least, enough of the Republicans that matter - the ones who really pull the puppet strings) thought he represented everything the party believes and stands for that he was picked as their '#1 guy' less than eight years ago. Perhaps even more than the Obama vs. Romney nonchoice, the Obama vs. McCain election was proof positive that it really doesn't matter which side of the plug nickel we vote for as the 'differences' between the two major parties really aren't all that different. McCain is simply confirming that fact, again.2 points

Sickening. It goes beyond gun control by Guv'mint, it is an attack individualism; that I as a rational, thinking human being pose a threat to the public safety because I can think and discern. Vigilantism? Free from gun violence? Law enforcement at greater risk due to assault and high capacity weapons? Loopholes and corrupt dealers? Straw purchase and innocents murdered? 12 year olds terrified of being shot and killed at school? Explain how or why this should impact ME. I take full and personal RESPONSIBILITY for my gun ownership and expect to be prosecuted if I break any of the thousands of laws on the books. Callous since I haven't been a victim of gun violence, perhaps. But I do not and will not place my safety or that of my family in the hands of Guv'mint or any other man.1 point

Hey guys, I would like to give a shout out to predator custom for the fast and AWESOME work they did on my SR1911. I got a smooth trigger job on this gun, and I just finally was able to get to the range to give it a shot. I was told it would be 3 weeks, when I dropped off my gun on a Saturday. It was ready in just 4 days on Tuesday. (I also got a smooth trigger job on my Kimber, and a broken ejector fixed, but I haven't fired the Kimber yet so I'll save that review for later). As soon as I get the $$ together I'm going to add some VZ grips to the gun. Without further ado, here are my targets from the Range. 10 shots fired per target, target on left at 3 yards, and target on right at 7 yards. These are the first shots I took with the gun once I got it back, no warm up :) In the first target I jerked the trigger pretty bad, and anticipated the recoil on that one low hole as you can see, but don't worry about that little guy. On the 7 yard target I feel like I was slightly jerking the trigger consistently to group left. These shots were taken standing, no rest, at Shooter's Depot. Very happy with Predator Custom and with my 1911. This one is a keeper and I will be giving more work to Predator.1 point

When asked about it; he refused to answer. I doubt they found or read that paperwork until after he was arrested and they got to HQ to fully examine the weapon and the case. It isn’t their responsibility to go on a hunt for the paperwork; it’s his responsibility to display it upon request. Of course he is arguing that unless they are ATF or IRS agents they don’t have the authority to even ask to see it. Because Tennessee state law outlaws suppressors unless a person has Federal paperwork I think he will find out he is wrong, but we will have to wait and see.1 point

In my mind, the finest 1911 'smith out there is Richard Heinie. I had two of his custom .45's that fired thousands of rounds each without one single malfunction....ever. That was with all types of bullets using all kinds of magazines, including $2 military surplus ones. Accuracy was outstanding. Sadly, he no longer takes orders for new guns, but if those Richard Heinie Signature guns sold by Nighthawk are only half as good as the ones I had, then the Nighthawk would be my choice.1 point

A massive power outage over a widespread area for several weeks is different than what we experience with hurricanes and rolling blackouts. We're talking about an area so large that the government could not provide enough resources fast enough to feed a population who have nothing. 30 days is about the mark I would say where things get real. As big as Sandy was, the power outages were not so widespread and for so long that people were starving. Hell, I grew up in Florida, so I've been without power for nearly a week at a time following a hurricane. What we're talking about is something that is so widespread and damaging that the gov doesn't have the resources to cover down, with aid and the ability to repair damage. Say what you want about New Orleans, but that still was a small area by comparison and they were able to effect a plan in less than a week. What we're talking about is something very different.1 point

My current job. Aircraft mechanic. If you fly out of Nashville on United or Delta and there is a problem with the aircraft. I'm the guy that most likely shows up. Only mechanic on duty and I have freedom and variety. The airplane is mine from avionics to a broken passenger seat, its all mine. My company is wonderful as I show up and thats pretty much it. No one looking over my shoulder or wondering where I'm at. If needed, they know I'm a radio call away. I love the freedom and trust they have in me, plus I just walk around the airport enjoying the "view" that is always present. If I ever have to get a real job again. I'm screwed. The downside is, if I screw up, people die and I go to jail.1 point

I myself don't get all the Probable Cause arguments. Forget the body armor for a moment and just consider the appearance of a firearm alone. It's illegal to have a loaded gun on your person in this state. If you have an HCP, you have a defense to carry a loaded handgun. If a LEO sees the handgun, he can ask you to see the permit. If you don't have one, seems he would also have PC to check and see if the gun is loaded, to see whether he should charge you. There is no such defense for a loaded long gun on your person, so when a LEO sees one, or what likely appears to be one, how does he not have the same Probable Cause to inspect it? I don't see where a case, regardless of how it is shaped, figures into it at all. Indeed, the TN statute only gives an out for "an unloaded rifle, shotgun or handgun not concealed on or about the person and the ammunition for the weapon was not in the immediate vicinity of the person or weapon". Indeed, having it in a case that visually and logically implies that it contains a long gun might be interpreted as "concealed"? Or perhaps a case that does not imply "long gun" is "concealed" (but would be problematic for Probable Cause). Point is, though, by what interpretation of 39-17-1307 and 1308 did the LEO not have the full authority to check out the firearm, especially since the case itself screamed AR-15? I suppose a locked case presents another particular set of legal parameters, but in this case it was not locked (and I don't believe gaffer tape could possibly be construed to be so). And "locking" the firearm itself, well, dunno about that, but here they did not defeat that lock anyway. So certainly seems there was every reason to legally detain him until they could look in that chamber. The fact they arrested him for the can seems to be the only problematic part to me, especially if indeed the paperwork was right there in the case plainly visible, whether Lenny ever drew their attention to it or not. - OS1 point

Is an EMP "expert" the same as a global warming "expert"? I want to see some math. Total destruction of the power grid ain't gonna happen. Can an EMP destroy megawatt level power transformers? Maybe, if it has enough energy. Can it melt every component? No. When a power component fails, it turns into something else... a fuse. Not saying a disaster can't happen. Just saying that total destruction isn't possible. Maybe our government is on to something in this case. BTW... power transformers normally fail from external conditions in two different ways. Either the internal voltages get high enough to punch through the insulation in the windings and create a short, or the load on the transformer gets big enough that it overheats and something melts. They're real tough, and are normally surrounded with things that are designed to protect against the two primary causes of failure... fuses and overvoltage protection. A localized lightening hit is a HUGE amount of energy, and the grid survives them all the time.1 point

Folks can go a good while without eating. It isn't fun, but I've done it. Most people have a few weeks of food in their cupboards if they ration appropriately, and once real food runs out people can still make it eating just about anything that is left that one wouldn't normally eat for sustenance alone. It becomes a calorie game at that point. So reasonably, most folks do have enough to see them through the first 30 days. That's actually the part that is scary for me. Once the regular meals run out, folks are now going through the scraps to make an acceptable caloric intake. That is when the real panic sets in; when they realize they might starve to death, yet they still have enough to give them the strength to look for food elsewhere. That's when they start killing people for a ham sandwich. That's when thugs start banding together to pillage homes, steal what they can carry, rape and murder. No matter how much food you save, that scenario is going to happen. I'm not worried at all about starving to death. I'm worried about the mob killing my family.1 point

Search Engine Optimization. ... probably necessary, and is the rage in web-marketing.. but probably every single person on here besides me can better tell you about who to hire. Now... a certain un-named, young, female country music star was given the task by her father to spend a couple hours each (and every) day on facebook interacting with fans (long) before her career took off. It was like homework, and it was hard work.... and it did work. If you could have been looking from the inside, you would've seen someone just as pretty, just as talented with a career track that parelleled hers.... without the difficult and laboriously repetitive ground-pounding on FB - that other someone is still trying to land deals that will make them a living. The uber-successful star built a personal relationship with her fanbase... one message at a time. My suggestion is to remember to use the web "presence" to build relationships with individuals.... who, in multiples, turn into identifiable "markets". ... The difference between you (your dad) and your competitors can be that your relationship with those individuals translates to everyone they know.... blah, blah, blah... Web presence is good. Showing up in the top 5 of google is great. What you do with that web presence can be the key to real, lasting success. For Example: If TGO David opened up a coffee shop, a gun shop, or even a quilt shop, how many of you would go out of your way to go in and see him... and find any excuse to buy something from him? :) see? When someone "walks" into your web space, you want to treat them just like if they walked into your office/home/store... and as close as you can get to "conversational" with them, the more they will feel cared-for and "known" by you. That's my rambling... there are incredibly smart folks on this site who have put these principles to good use, and I'm thrilled to learn with you as we read their responses. All the best to your father in his endeavor.1 point

At first she didn't trust the safety so she carried empty chamber with it cocked and locked. After a few weeks of her seeing the safety was working she now carries loaded chamber, cocked and locked. She would and still does practice at the range disengaging the safety on her practice gun which is another p238 before starting our shooting exercise. Also she is a better shot then me :)1 point
