  1. I am surprised that there is more outrage over this issue than the bank bailouts and the billions that this country pisses away in foreign aid bribes annually. Until drastic changes are made, our government will continue to waste our tax dollars. Until we stop the losses that we incur giving away resources and money to foreigners, I'm not going to have a stroke because Americans get enough money from the gorvernment to remain poor. When we stop military projects that require that at least one screw be manufactured in every congressional district in America I'll have stroke over poor people screwing the system out of goods that we will willingly fly on our tax dollars to the beaches of a foreign country before storm waters receed from their shores. I'm not attempting to justify the abuses. I work as hard or harder as most people here and I have to put on my big boy drawers every April to write Uncle Sam an extortion check. I get your anger. I just have different priorities when it comes to how Uncle Sugar disburses our tax dollars.

  4.   Yep.   In the real world, would take some extraordinary circumstances to got popped someday for having first made a rifle from a virgin lower, but hey, do it according to the book and you never have to think of a lie, eh?   (A quirk of this ruling is that federal law has no maximum length for a barrel to be classed a handgun, so really, anyone who builds an AR and puts the stock on last, first made a handgun, cause it can't be a rifle without a stock.)  But don't necessarily take that advice as your statement. :)   - OS

  5. While I can see why one would hold that position, I can't justify the theft from citizens necessary to raise the funds in the first place. Government doesn't have any money of its own, it only has what it has first stolen from the people.

  7. Corporate welfare is an investment that provides a return to the people? Tell that to Solyndra. The way you make an environment hospitable to business isn't by bribery with tax dollars. It is by not taxing and regulating them out of profitability. Leave people and business to live or die by their own merits and get the government out of their hair. Tax dollars should be spent only when absolutely necessary to provide bare bones essential functions like the courts or national defense (not offensive war adventuring). If the government has to support itself by stealing a third of its citizens' wealth and STILL has to borrow 40% on top of that it makes one wonder weather we really need it or if it just a really big, overgrown parasite on the people.

  9. This is just a WAG on my part, but I think it may stem from the fact that the abuses of the EBT system are much more visible to us. I am sure most of us here can recount an experience where we were first hand witness to what appeared to be abuse of the system. Not many folks look deep enough into the arcane convolutions of defense contracts or other .gov appropriations to see the extreme amounts of abuse of our tax dollars. It all pisses me off, but of course I am one of those extreme libertarian types with a heavy ancap influence who would see 90% of the government abolished.

  14. Thanks for sharing your story. I hope that your situation improves in the immediate future. I tend to believe that there are more stories like yours as opposed to people enjoying the substandard living that comes with being on government assistance. I believe that it makes some people feel better patting themselves on the back because thru proper preparation or sheer luck they haven't found themselves at the mercy of people like themselves. No matter how highly we think of ourselves and our abilities it can always be stripped away and we my need to depend on the kindness of strangers, forum members or God forbid the government. I refuse to lump the recipiants of government assistance into a monolithic group of leeches, because that's as crazy as some of the negative labels placed on responsible gun owners after a wack job goes on a shooting spree.

  15. Confessions of an EBT Leech   In January I was averaging slightly less than a thousand bucks a week before taxes. Then I tore a quad tendon and a few weeks later (after wok comp. kicked in) had about six hundred fifty bucks a week coming in. Then, on March 15th, while on "hawk patrol" in our back yard (my wife had left the door of the chicken run open and the hawks were having a heyday with our bantys), I became the reluctant recipient of a self-actuated adventitious ballistically induced subcutaneous astragalus aperture (my left knee buckled and as I stumbled, I accidentally shot myself in the freakin' ankle with a .357mag rifle - been around guns literally all my life and it's not supposed to happen, but sometimes it just does). Anyway - BANG - six surgeries, several weeks in the hospital and ZERO income from April until the second week in July when I was able to start working part time in our office, making about a hundred eighty bucks before taxes. Since then, I've missed three weeks of work because my wife contracted viral meningitis in mid August and spent a week in the hospital and then needed 24 hour care for a couple of weeks afterwards and there was no one else to help.   Man, talk about being damned glad to be one of those weirdo prepper types! We had enough food set by to get us through quite a spell, but we went through our savings pretty quickly just trying to keep heart & soul together and purchasing "specialty items" that I needed that insurance wouldn't cover.   One of the members here spread the word while I was still in the hospital and a collection was taken and, as much as I detest accepting "charity" of any kind, the money couldn't have come at a better time. I know I haven't thanked the members and friends here on TGO nearly enough and I'd like to take this opportunity to once again thank everyone for the words of support and their donations when I was at my lowest, both physically and mentally. Mere words cannot begin to express the depth of gratitude and humility I continue to feel for the outpouring of support.       I said all that to say this: I'm not out to chew anyone's ass and I agree with some of what has been said here so far and there was a time when I, myself, thought that everyone who received food stamps or an EBT card was lazy and no account and just needed to get off their butts and get a job...   Then all of a sudden I had no choice but to apply for EBT myself. I haven't been able to buy beer or cigarettes or even a hot rotisserie chicken from the grocery store like a bunch of people seem to think. We can't buy gas, batteries, hot nachos, or even freakin' toilet paper. I applied for (and was rejected by)  Social Security Disability - figured since I'd paid into it all these years, I'd take a little out until I could get back on my feet (no pun intended). NO ONE wants me to get back to being a productive member of society as much as I do. And as I type this I still don't know if I'll ever be able to go back to work full time. And we're still getting by on less than two hundred bucks a week.   I agree that there are a lot of abuses to the system. I've heard radio talk show hosts go on and on about the worthless EBT card leeches stocking up on steak and pork chops at the end of the month. And I was outraged right along with them. Then I had to become one of those worthless leeches myself. And I found out a few things. I'm not going to bother to share what I've learned here because I've read this thread and I'm beginning to doubt that it would make any difference.   And no, it doesn't look like I've missed many meals. Part of that is because, thanks to careful planning on the part of my wife and myself, I haven't. And part of it is because I still can't get around well enough to get the physical exercise I need to get myself back into decent shape.    There's more I could say, but I won't bother because it won't change any minds and besides I've got to worm my way under the house and work on a water leak that I can't afford to pay a plumber to work on, so I'll leave you with this:   There are a lot of abuses to the system. Not nearly as many as people seem to think, but they do exist. I'm sorry that I'm one of the leeches who uses EBT. If it's any consolation, I haven't bought any ammo, guns or fishing gear since before I got hurt. Every cent I make goes back into our household and I've even been forced to sell off some pretty dear possessions to keep the lights on...   I just pray that none of the gloaters here ever have to eat their words and become an EBT or SSI leech. Believe me, it's not only not fun, it's humiliating and degrading and top of everything else, you get to listen to people you used to respect talk about how worthless you are and what a drain on society you are. Oh sure, they won't mean you, personally, but that's only because they don't know you're an EBT leech. When they find out, they'll feel sorry for you and pity you and become conciliatory...   ...and that's even worse.     :(

  17. I needed my toys again , I decided to do some rebuilding and get my garage cleaned out , some will be for sale but not the Rupp. While one of our four wheelers is down I figured it's time to fix'em all. My 1996 XR 600 needed new rear bearings and prob a carb rebuild , then it started. I decided let's get my wife's old 1971 Rupp out of the way of the garage refrigerator door , we're always dodging around it to get the fridge door open.. Well , after a carb rebuild kit and a lot of soaking , new points and condenser , plug and tank varnish removing I am proud to announce it is running again !

  18. Am I the only one who gets irritated as heck by the people on GunBroker who will list an item, but stick the model of a different firearm in the title so it comes up in other searches?  For example, tonight I did a search for a Sig P228 and I get results for a P220, P226, P238, and P239.  Why? Because people will list their item as: "P226 NOT P228 P229" or "P220 Used P226 P228 P229" It just irritates the living bujeezuz out of me and I wouldn't bid on their item simply out of principle.   There. I'm glad I got that off of my chest.  :wall:

  19. Speaking for myself, the reason why it invokes so much anger is because it is a direct theft by other Americans who are fully capable of working, and we have it thrown in our faces by those on the dole who demand even more and use their votes to have those demands met. While I tend to agree on defunding most foreign aid, or at least using the money in wiser ways to advance our interests, I can't fault the governments of those nations for taking a handout. They don't elect our leaders, and they have no inherent loyalty to us or duty to make America great. Each American does have that duty whether they chose to honor it or not. I can't forgive those that defraud the system and steal from the rest of us. There are plenty of other things to get worked up over, but this is certainly a bitch-worthy category. If we're going to have government mandated charity I want that funding to go only to people who are mentally or physically incapable of being productive members of society. Everyone else can work or die.

  22. Medical supplies including antibiotics(look into fish antibiotics) and training on how to administer aid, a way to heat your home, I wouldn't solely rely on propane for this, a wood stove with a good stack of wood is a better choice. You said you have spring water and that's perfect for drinking but what if it gets contaminated, also you should collect rainwater even if it's only 100 gallons it could be used for baths and washing dishes and clothes. A way to charge batteries like a simple solar system would make a huge difference. Maybe some fuel for your vehicles for emergency use only. 20 gallons is usually about a 400 mile range for most vehicles. Knowledge and training will be the most important things. I composed this list cause its things on my list, you can never be prepared enough.

  27. Some of those numbers are suspect, Red. There are 7,000 grains in a pound, not 1,000. Generally, FIVE thousand small rifle primers are $120-150, not ONE thousand at that price. Other than that, I mostly agree. :-)

  28. If you get stupid over showing an ID to an officer, you might still make a friend - and your cell mate probably won't ask for a ID.   While in a Jackson restaurant recently, I was asked for an ID when requesting a menu. As I was producing it, I asked if they planned to give me a senior or military discount.  I probably would not been asked, if I had sat at a table instead of at the bar, but would have had slower service.

  29. I've given it a lot of thought and I see absolutely no reason to open carry. No offense to anyone else here because this is totally my personal opinion. OC'ing puts you at a disadvantage in a self defense scenario because if a thug sees you're armed and you don't notice him, he could get the jump on you. Worse, you might be targeted just because said thug wants to steal your gun. I don't mind anyone owning or carrying a gun. If you conceal and it accidentally comes out, no problem. But OC'ing just seems like a really bad idea for all intended purposes of having a permit. I believe the law of being able to open carry is just there to protect us incase it accidentally slips in to view. I hope they always keep this protection in place because it is hard to totally conceal a gun at all times when moving around and reaching for stuff at the store. :2cents:

  30. A change I would suggest, and STRONGLY advocate is the legalization of car carry for those who cannot obtain a HCP (due to age, or just don't want it).  If you have the right to have a loaded firearm in your home, you ought to be able to keep it in your vehicle.  TN law is so ambiguous when it comes to transporting firearms, this would just make it a much simpler affair.  Not being able to obtain a HCP due to age, I struggle with the immediate vicinity phrasing of TN law.  When something such as that is not defined by law, it worries me.  What I consider to be not in the immediate vicinity, and a police officer consider immediate vicinity could be two different things, and would just add a layer of protection to pro-2A citizens.  Considering most, if not all states surrounding TN allow it, I believe it is time that TN allow the 18-20 y/o pro-2A citizens to be able to legally carry in their vehicle.  What are your thoughts on something like this?

  34. Went down and talked to the guy living out of his pickup. Pretty nice guy. Turns out he's homeless because he chooses to be - Well, actually what he said was that he could get 3 hots and a cot if he wanted, but that would require doing something against the law to the woman he's been married to for the past ten years (and is now separated from) and he chose not to go that particular route no matter how much he feels she deserves it.   Thanked me profusely for the noodles and the coffee pot - he's in a tight spot right now because his employer cut back his hours to avoid having to offer him healthcare and he refuses to not pay his bills and hasn't been able to find an extra job to make up for the lost wages. Told him I could relate.   Asked him if he'd thought about or applied for food stamps or EBT. He said he'd rather starve than be labeled as one of the moocher class. Told him I understood perfectly then I admitted that his noodles had been purchased with an EBT card. Told him lots of folks don't understand how the rules have changed and that it's not as easy to get and keep as it used to be. He said Yeah? What about the guy with the fancy cedar walking stick and new blue jeans he saw in Walmart with a pocket full of cash and using an EBT card? I told him it might've been me - bought the jeans before my accident and hadn't been able to wear 'em out much... spent 3 months in the recliner with my foot propped up and used the time to make the walking stick in hopes of someday using it to walk. Had the cash in my pocket because I'd just sold a pair of custom made cowboy boots I bought a couple of years ago and couldn't wear anymore thanks to surgery number six which permanently fused my left ankle. Explained that Walmart was on the way to the power company and I didn't think that leaving the cash in the car was a real good frickin' idea. He said he reckoned that maybe things weren't always what they seemed after all. Told him yeah, but good luck convincing anybody else of that.   Nice guy. Enjoyed talking with him. Told him to go ahead and apply for assistance - the way the system works and the way things have changed, he'd probably be back to sh*ttin' in tall cotton before he got approved, if he got approved (it took six months for us). Told him I'd bring him some more noodles next week and not to worry about the stigma, if anyone said anything tell 'em it was my taxes that went to feed him - theirs had been used up funding a study of the sex life of the Abyssinian crotch cricket and if they didn't want to fund stuff like that they'd better quit voting for the ******* idiots who keep giving away their tax dollars for stuff like that...   Learned some things today. Reckon I'm richer for the knowledge so I guess that classifies the day as a success in my book. Hope everyone else had a successful day, too.   :hat:   ...TS...

  37. Someone attempted to translate it on Reddit (curse words below): I translated most of the exchange between the people in the video. It starts at 0:41. Robber: Stop! Stop, stop, stop. Give me the alarm! Victim: Okay, okay. Robber: Give me the alarm, give me the alarm! Robber points the gun at victims head. Victim: It's here, it's here. Robber: ####, hurry! Victim: It's right here, it's right here! Victim hands over the alarm system key. Victim: You can take it away, you can take it away! Other robber approaches say something inaudible. Victim: No man, I'm not armed. Robber #2: What? Victim: I don't have any gun on me, I'm not a cop. Robber #2 to Robber: Let's go, let's go. Victim: You guys can take it, take it. Cop approaches Robber and BAM! BAM! (or pew! pew!, whatever you prefer) Robber: Ouch! ####! Victim: Thank you police! Thank you police! Thanks a lot! Victim: Now you're gonna rob in hell. You're not gonna take away my bike. You're not gonna take it, thank god. Victim put's helmet on the ground. Inaudible exchange between victim and cop. Another cop in black t-shirt steps in and talks to cop hero. Black tshirt cop: I work for "Guarda". (a division of the police department) Are you a captain? Cop gets in the car. Victim: Now you're gonna rob in hell you son of a bitch. Robber (whining): I got shot! >Victim (pissed off): You go #### yourself! You're the one pointing gun at other people's face! Robber: Oh, I'm gonna die. Victim: You sure will! You should have already! Son of a bitch. Robber inaudible, apparently asks someone to get him something to drink. Victim: You're gonna drink in hell! You're gonna drink the devil! Victim to other people around: ####, I'm going on my way and this asshole comes to rob me. Victim pick up the helmet. Victim (to camera): I'm lucky it's still recording. They tried to rob me here. Victim (on the phone): Just come over here. This guy just tried to rob me and the cop shot him. Come quickly. Just don't tell dad. Come quickly! Victim hangs up. Victim: You have to live so you can get beat up in jail! Victim (to himself): ####ing idiot. Robber: I'm dying! Victim: Yeah, you're supposed to! You have to get ####ed. You're not the one that likes to rob? Getting a job is something you don't want to, right?! Do you have any idea how much I'm working to pay for this motorcycle?! You have no idea, right! And then you take it away easily! Victim: And you're lucky that I wanted to get your buddy as well! But don't worry because he's gonna get caught. Guy in blue t-shirt to victim: Was it red or black that one? Victim: Red. >Victim (to some cop): Guy wasn't wearing a helmet but I noticed when I looked in the mirror they were up to no good. Guy in blue t-#### starts patting down the robber. Robber: Keep your hands off me! ####. Blue t-#### guy reaches for something and hands it over to cop. Robber to cop: I'm dying sir! Victim: Oh now you say "sir" right?! You first scare the #### out of other people and now it's all "sir". "Sir" my ass buddy! Now you're gonna get ####ed up in hell. Vicim: How about your buddy? You see. He ran away! Victim: You wanted to ride some Hornet, right?! (flips off) Here, now you're gonna ride a hornet in hell! (Hornet is a Honda model) Victim picks up camera Victim: Now you see this guy. He was going to rob me, now got all ####ed up. The cops shot him.

  39. Absolutely, at least for some Americans anyway. Native peoples, African slaves & all people born a woman most certainly were, add to that the Wiskey Rebellion or more to the point add the reason why it happened & we see a very selective application of our Constitutional protections even during our nation's first administration. Over the last 222 years it has slowly snow-balled, sure a few advancements were made for this group or that group, but the gradual decline in personal freedoms & liberties has been unabated with every single piece of legislation passed, almost like bits of sand dropping from the freedom/liberty side & slowly but surely filling up the tyranny side of an hour glass. I cannot fathom how anyone would argue it hasn't, I just need to look back into my own childhood & count the number of things that used to be lawful, which are now unlawful, things that were once permitted, which are now prohibited, things that were once voluntary but are now compulsory, to realize how with every passing generation we've slowly subjugated ourselves, our children & our children's children.. Calm seas of despotism & all that I guess ...

  42. As for pre-emption, remove all exceptions for local pre-emption of state law (even those passed before 1986).    Remove 39-17-1352a3 or at the very least require a non-ex-parte hearing before a circuit court judge before being able to revoke or suspend a permit.  It would be nice to require a hearing for all revocations and suspensions to require a hearing.   Criminal penalties for any person intentionally violating 39-17-1351l.   Place the burden of proof on TDOS for denials under 39-17-1351i instead of on the person making application.   Amending 39-17-1351g+h to prohibit the sharing of any fingerprint records with any other state, local, or federal agency unless there is a court order for that specific persons records.   Amending 39-17-1359a1 to remove the words "or local, state, or federal entity" :)   Add to 39-17-1359c1 the word knowingly.

  43. This happened in a little town in South Central Kansas, and even though it sounds like an Alfred Hitchcock tale, it’s true. I was on the side of the road hitchhiking on a very dark night in the middle of a terrible rainstorm, and no cars were on the road. The storm was so strong I could hardly see a few feet ahead of me. Suddenly, I saw a car come towards me and stop. Without thinking about it, I got in the car and closed the door and only then did I realize that there was nobody behind the wheel! The car started to move very slowly. I looked at the road and saw a curve coming up. Petrified, I started to pray, begging for my life. I had not yet come out of shock when, just before the car hit the curve, a hand suddenly appeared through the window and moved the steering wheel. Now paralyzed in terror, I watched how the hand appeared every time the car was approaching a curve. Finally, although terrified, I managed to open the door and jump out of the spooky car. Without looking back, I cut across country and ran through the storm all the way to the nearest town. Soaking wet, exhausted and in a state of utter shock and shaking visibly from my recent harrowing experience, I went into the first bar I came to and ordered two shots of Scotch. Then, still trembling with fright, I started telling everybody in the bar about the horrible experience I'd just gone through with the spooky car with no driver and the mysterious hand that kept appearing. Everyone in the bar listened in silence and I could see that they, too, were becoming frightened hearing my eerie story. Hair stood on end when they realized I was telling the truth because tears streaked my face and I definitely was not drunk! About half an hour later two guys walked into the bar where I was still trying to regain my wits and one pointed at me and said to the other, “Hey, there’s the sonuvabitch who jumped into the car while we were pushin it!”     :leaving:
