3. 300BLK and 6.5 Grendel are really on the opposite ends of the spectrum as far as use cases go. I'm seeing comments like the above a lot. You might think some about what you really want to do with the rifle and let that guide your thinking some. 300BLK is a good defensive caliber and enough for almost any game you'd want to hunt in TN, but it's not going to win any awards for distance. 6.5 Grendel will be great for putting holes in paper at range, but is a pretty expensive option for that whitetail.

 4. My wife got spooked from that video a while back of the dude kicking in the door and nearly beating a woman to death in front of her nanny-cam. Now she wants to get her carry permit, which I'm of-course all for.    My worries are that I think people get this idea that the moment they point a barrel, they now have control over the situation. It's the way it happens on TV, but I've had guns pulled on me before and all they do is piss me off. I'm afraid a rapist or other dirt bag might see her pull her piece and doubt her commitment on pulling the trigger and take it as an excuse to escalate the situation from bad to really bad.    I told her I really hope that if she picks nothing else up from the carry class, it's that if you pull your pistol out you better be 200%-ready to blow some holes in someone, or else things will likely get really bad really quick. No warning shots, no drama, just draw and shoot.

 5. Since someone brought this thread back to the top, I will let you guys in on another issue of similar nature.  I managed to break all the bed slats on my bed.  Last week I ordered some heavy duty steel supports for my bed from Amazon http://www.amazon.com/X-Support-GS-3XS-Bedding-Support-System/dp/B004OT0S2I/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1382320775&sr=8-2&keywords=steel+bed+slats .    The package was delivered to my house on Wednesday.  As I pulled up my driveway, I saw a bunch of cars at my house.  A bunch of relatives decided to stop by the house.  Everyone was in the kitchen, and when I went in my older sister told me that I got a package from UPS.  They asked me what it was, and I told them.  My mom asked me why I bought those, and I told her that I broke all the other bed slats.  Everyone started laughing and my mother said, "I have no idea what y'all are doing up there, but I have been married twice and have never broken bed slats."  :)

 6.   And I think this sums up what the carry class is about.  It is not a self-defense course, it is an explanation/instruction on the laws of carrying and using a handgun in TN.  It is also a test for the basic understanding of the law in this regard and a test to be sure you possess a minimum of knowledge to load, shoot and handle a handgun safely.  What concerns me the most is that a lot of people consider this self defense training, and now are 'trained' to handle such a situation.  To me, the HCP is analogous to a Hunter's Safety course or your Driver's Learning Permit......it should be just the start.

 7. Careful with this. If it is for sure a mental health issue, then have the kid checked for that as it can't be avoided. If it is just a behavioral problem, do not let it go to mental health. Seen too many people medicated that really didn't have MH issues. People without MH issues take MH drugs, do get crazy. And when the drugs don't work properly, the Dr's switch their meds around trying to find something that works and that makes the problem even worse. I've even seen folks take MH drugs recreationally that had zero MH issues ever in their life and they became severely depressed and even suicidal after using. It doesn't help my opinion on this since my best friends sister used MH drugs recreationally, got addicted to MH drugs like Xanax, etc., and went from a beautiful girl to a nut who was slashing her arms and body, even had stove top burner scares on her arms where she turned the stove-top burners on and burned herself. She ended up passing away in her sleep at 35 years old (I was never told the cause of death, but I can assume a cocktail of drugs and or suicide). And.... My sister works in Mental Health, so I get all the inside stories. So make sure it isn't just behavioral problems because MH drugs do not fix those issues, they make them worse IMHO.

 9. Not only are powwows fun, they're very educational about the first nations people.  We used to visit friends of the Dakota tribe a few years back and learned that not only do they have a rich history, they are very patriotic.  Most Native Americans serve with honor in the armed forces since it appeals to their warrior traditions and their relationship to the land and its protection.  The regalia (don't call them costumes) the dancers wear have significance.  Your interest in the designs and decorations may earn you an explanation if you ask about their meaning respectfully.   On our very first South Dakota visit years ago, our friends invited us to join them at a memorial gathering for a member of a tribal family who had served in World War 2.  They danced and sang songs in the Dakota dialect about his exploits and honest character as a loving husband, father and devoted helper to the community.  It is the Dakota tradition to give gifts to those who attend the memorial as a token of their appreciation that you set aside time to come and honor their departed loved one.   Imagine our surprise when they called my wife and I to come forward and receive a handmade blanket and another expression of their gratefulness that we attended the service.  Through our friend, the family learned we were visiting and wanted to welcome us to their culture.  Their kindness was extremely significant because the family was not wealthy, but gave lavishly of what they had.  How many of us in the wasichu (white man) culture would do the same?

 10. That this is even remotely a serious question shows how broken the Republican Party is.  :shake: Sorry folks, but it seems that all it takes to be considered as a viable candidate for POTUS is to be loud and obnoxious and make abstract statements about policy that people like.  The Dems got Obama, The Reps wanted Palin, then Newt, and then Bachman.  Then it was Rubio. Then it was Rand Paul.  Now it's Ted Cruz.  And people here are seriously saying that Ted Nugent would be a good candidate, but would also likely say that voting for a solid Libertarian is giving the election away to the Dems???

 12. Now I like Ted Nugent but before anyone puts him in an ivory tower you may want to look up his history.   He has a bunch of kids, 8 with 5 out of wedlock, and this "family man" fought hard to keep from paying child support for some of them. Eventually he was ordered to pay but it seems like he would have done the rightthing in the first place and take care of his kids.   Then there was the incident involving the 17 year old Pele Massa when he was ~30. Because he coudn't legally marry her he convinced the parents to give him guardianship. But rather than marry her like he promised he sent her on her way when he was done with her.   I support his views on guns but not much else.

 14. I have bought quite a bunch knives over the last couple of years, and quite a few have been fairly expensive. While I have enjoyed having, using/abusing, and in some cases, giving away my knives, things change. Interests, priorities, and even relationships change over time. I have been a fan of Rick Hinderer's XM line for quite a while, and my XM-24 is one of my favorite blades. The downside to Rick's knives has always been their popularity and the price they command on the secondary market, which is no fault of Rick; he makes a great product. Anyway, a friend of mine at USN, got on one of Hinderer's Friday specials where they were selling 15 XM-18s at normal cost. He knew I didn't have one, and he got one for me. While I wasn't really looking for a new XM, I jumped all over this one since it was at normal cost. It is nothing special, but here is my XM-18 (bottom), which will be the last knife I buy for quite some time.

 15. Channel 4 dropped by our warehouse the other day wanting some footage of a gun safe for a story they were doing,  What was the story? Well it seems a gun owner had purchased a cheap safe from TSC and didn't bolt it down and shockingly someone broke in and stole the entire safe and along with it his gun collection and other valuables.    Here's the story that channel 4 ran :   http://www.wsmv.com/video?clipId=9423403&autostart=true     Moral of this story?  Buy a good quality safe that is secure and heavy enough to keep someone from getting your hard earned valuables  AND by all means BOLT IT DOWN !        [sharedmedia=core:attachments:89] Another example of a cheap safe that was bolted down but was beaten open with a mini sledge hammer.   Drop by we would be happy to show you a good quality safe .   Mark The Safe House

 16. I was having a beer or 3 tonight and thought I'd share this. Doesn't have a great ending or anything but here goes........       I had to go recliner shopping this evening. My old friend of the past 6 years went to the 'man cave in the sky' earlier today. As I was trying out a suitable replacement an older couple walked by followed by what I guessed was their son. I flopped the footrest down and we exchanged a hello as they walked by.   Now I'm deep in thought about making such an important purchase. This recliner isn't about me, it's about the dog. Is there enough room for him to lay beside me without me having to sit on the opposite arm of the chair so I'm not touching him? Will he have enough of a landing pad when he jumps from 10 feet away running at 100 mph? Is the footrest big enough for him to lay sideways on his back exposing his kibbles and bits for the world to see? Still I manage to notice something.   The son is wearing scrubs and semi pocket carrying a revolver, a big revolver. How do you semi pocket carry you ask?? You grip the big ass gun and stick most of it in your pocket. Next you leave the grip exposed above your pocket. How does the gun not just fall in or out of your pocket? You never take your hand off the grip is how!! I'm watching this guy walking around with a partially exposed gun in his hand.   I'm not gonna lie, when I first saw this it was hard to keep my hand from finding it's way under my shirt and on to the grip of my Kimber. So I stand there for a minute looking at this guy. When his Dad asked him something it was "yes sir". He's helping his mom by holding her purse while she fondles something. He's holding the purse with his left hand, right hand never comes off the grip. He sets the purse down and helps her sit on a chair she likes. Again, never lets go of what looks like a big S&W. Dad asked him another question, "yes sir". I'm thinking...seems like a nice guy but what the hell. So I ask.   Me: What ya got in your pocket? Him: Ahhh...S&W revolver. Me: Looks kinda big. Him: Yeah, a 629. Left my carry gun home. This is my truck gun. Me: Nice. Why you carrying it like that? Him: Didn't have a holster with me. Me: Guess you don't have enough pocket for it. Him: Pocket has a hole in it. Me: What?? Him: My pocket has a hole in it. Me: LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL Him: No, really. There's a hole in my pocket and that's why I'm holding on to it.   I've absolutely lost it laughing at this point because he's serious as hell. There was so much more I wanted to say to him but he walked off as the guy from the warehouse walked up and said my recliner was up front waiting for me.   Here's the best part. I'm sure I was the only person that noticed. There was at least 20 people walking around and no one paid any attention. Too busy doing their own thing. And I worry about printing sometimes.   The story doesn't have a happy ending. The dog won't get near the new recliner. Pretty sure it's going back tomorrow.

 22. Something we all need to be reminded of from time to time in regards to a hand gun carry permit 1) in a life or death situation when we pull our hand gun we must be willing to shoot and 2) if we feel we must shoot we shoot until the threat is stopped. if any doubt about this we probably don't need a handgun carry permit.

 32. swim:  I believe that the finish has rubbed thru... See the coppery color that is fanned out between the bare spot and the nickle plating... What you are seein is a spot worn thru to the bare steel, a ring of copper plating, and the worn area of the nickle plating--- three distinct rings...   My guess is that the pistol originally wuz carried a lot in a holster (...think sheriff deputy, policeman, or other everyday carry over a goodly period of time here....) and the movement between the gun and the leather holster over time has worn the finish off... I would just keep the worn spot clean and rub a bit of hard finish paste wax on it from time to time... I've seen several older nickle guns that have been carried a lot in a holster with wear spots on them similar to what ya get with a holster worn blue gun... When they plated the gun, they plated the copper on first to hold and smooth the nickle plating on...   Ya cant fix this sort of thing easily, and it hurts the collector value a bunch... The only way is to fix the spot is to strip the plating and re-plate, and you never get a good job with re-plating... I kinda like the "well used, lovingly cared for" look on these older  nickle pistols... I would just watch the spot and keep a coat of wax on it... It adds character to these old guns... We've got several nickle plated colts and smiths that show similar wear... Nickle (...believe it or not...) is soft and will scratch a bit... I think that contributes to the surface wear on the nickle guns...     leroy

 33.
That this is even remotely a serious question shows how broken the Republican Party is. :shake:
+1 here. It's quite obvious that the Repubs are badly fractured. They could learn a lot from the Dems. For example, regardless of their internal bickering, they know how to coalesce and become one when the cards on the table whereas the Repubs act like separate parts of a whole. I live in a pretty politically diverse area and when election time rolls around, I frequently see the Dems out in the neighborhood knocking on doors, can't say that about the Repubs. For whatever reason, many Repubs feel like people should come to the party instead of the party going to the people. I think if they made minor but significant changes, they would have better results. From my GSIII using TPR

 36. It has been a steady decline in the value of the dollar. If it were backed by something that was actually worth something( not the government's word), we could see prices on everything go down. Printing more money dosen't help us, it actually hurts us.   I miss the days of $1.00 gas, I actually would settle for $2.00 a gal gas. But like it or not, everything is gonna go up from now on. Unless something changes. Talking real change here, not this hope and change bull crap the "Big O" has been spouting.

 48. I was spotted and stopped yesterday. I was was carrying OWB with a shirt over it and was probably printing pretty hard. I don't carry ALL the time but everytime I have to hit the WW on Walbrook in West Knoxville I make sure I am. I had a bad experience there so I make sure I am ready this time. I had to bring my kids this time and that was apparently what the guy had a problem with. Here is what went down: A guy came up to me and asked me if I had a gun on me, I asked if he was security, we both did not answer the questions. After a short awkward pause he started into me about how I was a bad parent for having my kids around guns. He got pretty loud and started to cause a scene. He got loud enough that it scared my daughter who began to cry. At this point someone apparently told security, the arrived just at the right time, I was about to start yelling back. When security came up they promptly escorted the guy out and asked me what happened. One of the security guys laughed as the took the other guy away and said he is getting tired of how ignorant people are about guns. He gave my kids a couple of stickers and told us to have a nice day. They also had a guy waiting at the door to make sure I made it to the car ok. This was the first time I have been spotted that I know of. As much as I dislike WW, I was impressed with the way they handled the situation.
