  3. We need more armed people.   I dream of a society in which striking a person without provocation carries at least a 50% chance of being gunned down like a rabid dog right there on the spot.   :2cents:

  9. This ebola scare is way, way overblown.  It's just the media hyping the crisis-du-jour. It's not airborne. You have a greater risk of being killed by an escaped zoo animal than contracting ebola.

  12. I caught an interview on NPR with a doctor who worked with Dr. Rick Sacra, the US doctor who was transported to Emory. He said they're all pretty sure that he and the sick nurses contracted it outside the ebola ward. Probably while treating other patients suspected of "normal" diseases over there like typhoid, dengue, malaria, etc. who actually had undiagnosed ebola. In other words, they were probably infected the same way most others were infected: through contact with early-stage or misdiagnosed carriers.   There are unintentional side-effects to the way they're trying to isolate ebola over there. Patients suspected of ebola are placed in an isolation ward with other suspected patients. Most of them probably have malaria, etc, but one or more will likely have ebola. That means that in the confines of the isolation ward, they all end up with ebola. In short, if you go to the hospital with a non-ebola fever, you will probably be exposed to ebola in the isolation ward. The people have figured this out, so they quit going to the hospital. That means ebola, malaria, typhoid, etc. are all on the rise due to spreading exposure and lack of treatment across the spectrum. Add in the crazy people who are saying the government is conspiring to gve ebola to anyone that goes to the hosptial and you quickly spiral out of control.   We'll have some ebola cases here in the US, but our advanced medical system, public sanitation, and superior ability to do real isolation (plus the fact that witch doctors aren't covered under most plans) will keep this one from being widespread here. That will be of little consolation to the handful of people in the U.S. who will end up in the hospital bleeding from their eyes.

  13.   Personally, I much preferred working a Mal over a Shepherd.  They are such high energy dogs and driven animals that working them is a breeze.  If you get a good one, their behavior is so intuitive that it seems they require little guidance.  There is a drawback though.  When they aren't being worked they develop severe anxiety issues.  Yeah, all dogs do to some extent, but I've never seen anything like this.  Severe anxiety accompanied with high intelligence and energy is a horrible mix.  Throw in two small children and a couple other dogs and you now have your own madhouse.   If I were to have a dog simply for protection and the occasional agility/obedience competition, I'd take a Shepherd all day.  Then again, there is a sense of comfort I get knowing I have a malligator in the house and on the clock.  If someone breaks in, they won't be leaving with all their body parts.

  15. Personal thoughts aside here, but the younger crowd just doesn't seem to know any other words these days. I was as bad as most guys growing up, but this is just plain poor education.    Can't think of a decent word to use, so they curse.   Of course, the movies and music they are exposed to is a big influence as well.

  19.   I'm not counting on that.  I may be more likely to catch the flu, but I've never known it to be 50% fatal.     I've had the flu about 4 times in my life.  Survived them all.  I'm betting that if those doctors who were treated with that "miracle serum" hadn't gotten the serum, they'd probably be dead.  Or at least messed up for life.  That stuff causes internal hemorrhaging.  Probably permanent damage.  Just speculation of course, since I'm not a doctor from the CDC telling everyone that there isn't anything to worry about.   Oh yeah,  I'm worried about the enterovirus, too, since it's hitting little kids.   Sheesh.  I'm gonna self-quarantine now.     Edit:  I just re-read your post.  I get it now.

  20. Take your pick.   1) Evelyn and Jim: The gorillas that escaped, more than once, from the Los Angeles Zoo. 2) Nala: The lioness that escaped into Disney's backyard 3) Virginia: The wolf that escaped from the Los Angeles Zoo and may or may not have been recaptured. 4) The 170+ Rhesus monkeys that took over Long Island in the 1930s. 5) Ken Allen: The "Hairy Houdini" of the San Diego Zoo. 6) Nikica: The hippopotamus that wouldn't stay put. 7) The nine bison that ran loose in Oakland only to be coaxed back into their enclosure with bread. 8) Satara: The rhino that ran away from home after his mate left him for a younger rhino. 9) The penguin that escaped a Japanese aquarium. 10) And of course, the clever Bronx Zoo cobra.   http://www.cnn.com/2013/06/25/living/buzzfeed-cnn-escaped-zoo-animals/       BTW, today at work to a co work I said, it won't be long and they will be selling vaccines for both Ebola and Enterovirus D68.  He replied or they will give them to the people they like.

  23.     That's sounds like a situation where use of deadly force to defend yourself would have been justifiable. I'm getting more and more sick and tired of hearing about these young punk thug human garbage parasites beating up old people, attacking innocent people for the fun of it in grocery stores, having no conscience believing it's cool to be a thug. I'll give no sympathy for some parasite like that if they wind up on a floor bleeding with a bullet in the chest, they asked for it and they deserve it.

  25. Yeah, the ID/EP departments seem to have schedules for maintaining, inspecting, and rotating into service pretty much everything currently in storage in case of emergency. It's an amazing thing seeing behind the scenes where all the little things that keep a hospital VUMC's size running like a clock.   Shoot, today they are vaccinating over 12,000 staff, students, and faculty for the flu, but the event is also used as a training for mass vaccination of the population in general god forbid it should ever be required.   http://news.vanderbilt.edu/2014/09/annual-flulapalooza-event-happens-oct-1/

  26. In all seriousness, it could be a real opportunity for you. Guns are still popular, and we've seen a lot of these shows come and go recently. You are a lady with a family, so you would hit their female demographic that they always want. If you are serious about this: My advice : 1) be sure to be writing about the humor in your life in addition to the biz challenges 2) write about the stuff you get to see and do In all the cities you visit (adds a travel element) 3) we all know your dad has some fun "toys" so add any stories about the characters you meet at the show which lead to a visit to a firing range where you get to shoot interesting weapons. 4) keep writing - its a habit Have fun and good luck!

  31. Though I am careful about drinking possibly contaminated water/substances or knowingly coming into contact with known diseases I am of the mind that we are overly using antibacterial soaps and hand cleaners and setting ourselves up for a pandemic we will have no natural defense for. I think some of these germs are actually good for us, specially when young so we can build up antibodies to protect against worse germs.

  38. No, it doesn't. There are plenty of providers that will write 3 separate scripts to last their trustworthy patients. Or, as you suggested simply write one for pickup with a phone call from the patient. All they do is future date the script to ensure they aren't filled before the time they should be. Now, is that the best practice? No, but as far as I know there's no regulation against it. My suggestion...get used to it. My guess is before long, there will be a lot more drugs that make the same move.

  39. The folks at VRPC are a bunch of idiots with the exception of a couple. I was told by them that if they ever caught me with my legally registered suppressor they would seize it and I would have to get it back from the ATF. They recently told a member that they could not shoot there if their Mosin had a muzzle brake. They have told me that when my brass hits the ground it belongs to them. I eventually started marking my brass to keep the thieves at bay. I have caught them catching other peoples brass and sticking it in their pockets without the shooter's permission. I have caught them rifling through my shooting bags because they had to "inspect" what I had. I have had high end stuff come up missing several times when the only people who could have were the RSO's. But if you question the RSO's about anything they will threaten to have you barred from the premises and arrested for disorderly conduct.   BTW, one of the RSO's, who is a NRA certified instructor, pointed a pistol at my wife with an unknown condition pistol and pulled the trigger. It had a magazine in it at the time and when my wife jumped his ass his response was "this is a gun store, get used to having guns pointed at you". He is also the POS that would raid the brass box for the Boy Scouts. VRPC had an agreement with the local boy scouts so they could recycle the old brass to fund their troop. This same guy would take brass destined for the boy scouts then sell or trade it for his own gain.   I was there when one of the RSO's used a plastic soda bottle to make a suppressor for a 22. When asked, by some kids, about the legality of it the RSO said it was perfectly legal because it wasn't made out of metal and because it wasn't registered. He said as long as you didn't register a suppressor it was legal to have. That was the same idiot who said LC brass was so good because it was made in Lenoir City. He got a dumbfounded look on his face when I told him it was Lake City, not Lenoir City.   My advice is to stay away from that place and if enough people do eventually that place will shut down leaving all the liars, thieves, idiots and cantankerous asses without a place to inflict pain upon the general populace.

  42. Not gonna gloat but Heads are gonna roll before this is over. I don't think the other day when Obama said he felt totally safe with his security force that he was told the truth about how far the guy made it into the house but actually into the living quarters. I think now that he knows the whole story his idea that he trusted his Security may be changing.    And to battleop: I don't have to support the man elected to the office of the President of the United States to have total and complete respect for the office itself. If I was on his Secret Service staff and it came to taking one or more bullets to protect him or any member of his family you can bet i would take the bullets if it kept him or the family member from being harmed.  I would not be protecting Mr Obama or just a person in a family. I would be protecting the President of the United States or a member of the First Family.   Maybe your the one who does not understand and cannot separate the man from the office.................jmho

  45. Its a catch 22. Not matter how they handled the situation, it would have seen as a terrible way to handle it by one side. Thats what is happening. A nice and big schism dividing the country. Blame the president all you want, but he isnt the one sole responsible party for all these problems. Its everyone.
