  4. A while back I acquired my grail knife, a double-Ti bolstered Todd Fischer Archangel XL in S90V with a skull crusher backspacer. I loved the knife, but I was never all that wild about the sheep horn scales that were on it. It just so happened that one of the scales started to bow a little and I could see a small amount of separation between the scale and liner, which was killing me. Sheep horn is a natural material, so it can shrink, expand, etc... with a change in weather and humidity. It is an easy repair with a little heat and soak in oil, but since I didn't care for the scales anyway I opted for a replacement material. I had originally spoke to Todd about some moku-ti scales, which would have been badass, but he talked me out of it. While they would have looked great, the moku-ti scales would have just added too much weight and would have been way too expensive. I guess the moku-ti would have also pushed the knife more towards a legacy/presentation knife than a user, which is not what I want (no safe queens), We finally settled on silver lightning strike carbon fiber, and that turned out to be an excellent choice. I received my knife back today, and it is just down right mean with the new scales. Here are some pics. How about this for some absolute rock solid early lockup?

  5. Depends, if you buy it, will you or family have to cut another corner or not do something else?   How long will it take you to squirrel away that MAD money?   Most things I consider for a few months before I jump in.

  7. I have an '03 F350 with a 6.0 with a service bed on it. We bought it new in '03, It has 171,000 on it and has always given us good service. We are in the truck and bus repair business and use it for road service calls.   Here are a few things I have learned about the 6.0:   1. keep oil changed regularly, 7,500 miles, and change fuel filters every other oil change. Use a good diesel rated 15w40 oil, we do not use synthetic in ours just regular dino oil. We currently use Conoco, but have used Texaco, Shell, Mobil, and Pennzoil from our bulk tank over the years. 2. I added a coolant filter like the big trucks have, these engines have casting sand in the cooling system that eats up the water pump and egr cooler, the filter gets it out. We changed the coolant to the red extended life coolant like we use in big trucks. We have never had any cooling system problems. I cut open the first coolant filter we changed out and it was full of black sand. 3. Rev-X Oil additive,https://www.revxoil.com/REV-X_High_Performance_Oil_Additive.aspx, this is like a miracle product for powerstrokes, or any motor. I found about from an older retired mechanic that I know. I don't usually believe in snake oil type products but this is good stuff. I got mine from amazon. 4. Allow for warm up time in cold weather and allow for turbo spool down/ cool down time before shutting it off. 5. Take care of your truck and it will take care of you.   Hope this helps you out.   Another option for you might be an older suburban with a 6.2L diesel. I used to have 2 of them for company vehicles and we got excellent service out of them, 23mpg on the highway and 18 to 20 around town. Just hard to keep a 700R4 trans going for very long.

  8. The Shelton Laurel Massacre is a complex story. Let me tell you the version I know, it may not be accurate.  This happened in the heart of the Appalachians. The city folk were all about the Confederacy. The mountain folk could have cared less. They just wanted to be left alone. The city folk always looked down on these mountain people as being "backwards" so the relationship was not very good even before the war.  When the war started the city folk wanted all the mountain people to join the Confederate Army and fight for the cause.  When they didn't, the city folk decided not to sell the Mountain folk any salt. If you can't salt your meat, you won't make it through the winter. Well the Mountain people got their rifles and went into town and got their salt and gave a little lead back in return. This started a big feud. The feud went on the whole war. The Mountain folk around Shelton Laurel were Pro-Union and they would harass any Confederate unit deployed to the area. They would bushwack, ambush and snipe at the Confederates, then disappear into the woods. The Rebs couldn't catch'em. Finally Col. Keith had had enough and began visiting the homes of these people and torturing the women, trying to get information. This ended when the Rebs rounded up a dozen or so local men, from the age of 14 on up, lined them up and shot them dead. The Confederate governor of North Carolina was going to arrest Kieth and hold him for trial but the war ended and things were so chaotic that nothing was ever done. If you drive up Big Laurel Creek near Hot Springs NC, there is a memorial to the victims. It's on private property but they will give you permission to go there if you ask.         Those Mountain Folk are tough as tree bark. They spawn the ugliest men in Tennessee or North Carolina, but their women are the most beautiful women in the south. The mountains are also the home of many of our countries great writers and scientists. It hurts my head to think about it.

  11. A while back PSA ran a deal on an AR10 and AR15 Stripped lower for $170ish. About the same time they ran an 18" Melonite Rifle Kit with MI 15" Float Rail for $699 so I jumped. A week later they emailed me to tell me that they were having some delay with their melonite 18" barrels, so offered to cancel the order, or build the same spec upper with a stainless barrel and throw in 3 G3 308 PMAGS. I took the offer. I ordered on Sept 27th and received the kit on Oct 16th. I got it out to the range for a few shots on Friday to sight it in. I only had 10 M80 rounds, and 5 GMM 168 SMKs with me, but maanged a 7 shot 2 inch group with the M80, and a 5 shot 1.5 inch group with the SMK's. I was shooting off a bipod at 100 yards. I think I can tighten up a bit with a sandbag. Maybe can get 1.25 with the SMK's consistently. I did have a stove pipe about 5 rounds in on the m80. The gun is a little stiff, but is loosening up, so hopefully no more stove pipes. The trigger is the standard PSA classic. I polished the contact surfaces a little bit, which helped a lot, but it is still a little too heavy, but not gritty at all. Anyway, the fit and finish are GREAT! I have a really nice looking AR-10 for less than $850 (with three mags!) I had the harris bipod laying around, and replaced the standard M4 Stock and grip with an ACS-L and MOE+ grip I picked up on Saturday. the scope is a Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10X44 that I used to run on my SCAR. I am pretty happy with this thing. I hope to wring it out a bit in the coming weeks if I can get away from work. The guns is fairly light. The MI rail PSA uses is a lot lighter than the MI rails I have used in the past. There are a lot of gripes about PSA Customer Service. Yeah they ship slow, and they are hard to get in touch with, but they have always stood behind their products and the offer to "make it right" was much appreciated. The stainless barrel is a decent upgrade, and the 3 mags is a $55 toss in. It's worth waiting for smoking deals. As I have said before, if they hired a bunch more Customer Service and Shipping folks, they'd have to raise their prices.

  14. Wow, 45... that thing is a beast! I'm suddenly more excited abiut the direction this is going. I know it can't happen, but how crazy would it be if there could be some way to work the logo into a cutout pattern like your scales? Like each side has a shiny aluminum frame and the black scale on top, but the TGO emblem is cut through the black to reveal the aluminum below. Too crazy, I know!

  16. I still really want a runt, but I'm more than happy with this, too. And I like tanto blades. Probably 70% of my knives are tanto, and the profile on that one is killer awesome! In. Of course. But probably just for one. This one is more hightech looking... I wanted multiples of the runt when I thought it might be coming with wood scales. I'm itching for something really beautiful. Maybe I should go Newport or Half-breed... dunno why that standard grip and smaller blade looks so pretty to me.

  23. I'm just the same. Guitars, guns, and now knives. Not as prevalent, but still there is my love of cars and saltwater reef tanks. I just have one nice (to me) car and no tank right now, as we are buckling down hard to have our house paid off by my 40th birthday, which is 8 years away. If I didn't have to feed a couple of my hobbies we could do that even faster, but there has to be some kind of balance between working for the future and enjoying today. We also blow too much money eating out. These are the pleasures we afford ourselves. We buy used cars and keep them for about 7 years, I do most maintenence on them. I don't think we're saving quite enough right now in IRAs, etc, but console myself with the fact that we're blowing our mortgage out of the water ASAP. Anywho, it was hard for me to figure out our balance of fun vs responsible. Thankfully, wifey is a saver... though I hate it because I'm a spender... and she's right. I was jobless for over a year in 2008-09. I learned a lot about needs vs wants, and had to let a lot of my favorite things go so we could continue things like... eating. Hobbies can be a problem, if not managed. It's not necessarily the addiction, but what happens when all the extra money we make goes to fun stuff, then an un-fun event pops up and we have no buffer. Anyways... if it can be afforded, you DO need just one more gun. ;-)

  24. Yeah, GAS is a thing in the gun world too. If I had to rationalize my guns beyond being able to afford them and wanting them then I'd have a lot more room in the safe to say the least.

  29. not every R win was a 2nd win either.  We still are stuck with Lamar and our worthless governor, and other states had defeats as well -- hickenlooper won his battle, for example.     It was a great day.  But for gun control, it was only a meh day.  We got as good a results as could be asked for, of course, and that is awesome, but that is because the bar is set pretty low right now.

  30. i got a 2004 6.0 f250 so i know a little about the motor.  yes they have problems, but not all of them. i did the work three years ago on my truck to correct the problems.  the big problems was ford used the wrong coolant in them.  they used the ford gold coolant that is for a gas motor, not diesel.  this caused the problems with the oil cooler and egr cooler.  the head studs are only a problem if you use a tuner and want to hot rod the truck.  go over to the diesel truck sites to read on what to look for and how to fix the problems.  get a scangauge before you buy and use it to get the "delta" reading of the engine oil temp and coolant temp and the "ficm" reading.  the scangauge will give you all the reading you will need to get a overall idea on how well the motor is. the ford diesel sites will show you how to do this and what to look for.  this way you will know how much work you will need to do correct the problems.  if someone tells you that he has done the work ask for receipts.  no receipts, then no work done.  no way to see/tell if the work has been done by looking at the motor.  you can get a 6.0 with low miles for a very low price these days.  it does not take much to correct the problems.

  39. Things have been going much better than I ever imagined. Thanks to everyone who has given me feedback. It has really helped! This is all still  in draft form. I will say that I caused some lively debate on some state forums. Information was exchanged and laws discussed and in some cases there was no clear answer.  Some depended on what the definition of “IS” is!  Had to throw that “Is” in there as some laws are so hard to understand and even read. It just showed how out of touch some lawmakers are/were when writing gun laws.   I have reworked the first page trying to explain that people need to look at Places off Limits etc on each States Page at www.handgunlaw.us. Plus other information they need to be aware of. I have also made the states name on each section a link to that States Page at Handgunlaw.us so they can access it easily.   The states I have information for still need looked at by others and feedback on what may need added or removed would be greatly appreciated. The biggest problem is that if there is no law against something it is legal. Laws are so varied and spread out in the Statutes/Administrative Rules and Hunting Regulations it can be tough to find some of them. Then if there is not a law against it you can search forever and there is nothing to find. I have been cautious on some state entries. I just don’t have enough information and don’t want to get someone arrested and maybe lose their gun rights. That is where your feedback can assist me. Then we get to the Catch 22 again as there may be no law against it so you can’t show a statute/Rule Etc that states it is legal!   Below is a link to the latest Draft. Again feedback is most welcome! This is the same link to the first Draft Document. I just updated it. Thanks again to everyone who has assisted me. It is very much appreciated! http://www.handgunlaw.us/documents/LongGunDraftDocument.pdf

  41. ammo production has remained at relatively consistent production levels with pre-sandy hook numbers vs a demand level maintained by gougers and hoarders, more gun sales,  lots of high capacity .22 plinkers and "tactical" pistols/conversions.  Profit per round too low for increasing capacity.   It won't happen but a .22lr buying moratorium would help especially those folk who buy from gougers out of panic, and seem to continue to do so. Paying 10+ cents a round for ammo that a big box store can sell for 5 cents is the act of the rich or numb skulls.  Sure prices have gone up but the store I work at didn't start selling firearms until a little over a year ago and their price, when they have it of 100 rd boxes of Winchester Super X is 7.49.  Armscor 36 brain HV hollow points were 3.59 the other day.  I saw CCI Quiet and Std Velocity midday for sale at Walmart just in the last few weeks.  I think the days of sub 4 cent ammo may be over whatever the reason.  I would be happy to be able to buy a case of CCI Std Velocity and call it a year.  Fortunately I have been able to live off of my pre-Sandy Hook ammo for the most part, but have gathered a few bricks here and there through gun trading.  Funny thing is that in certain retailers there seems to be a lot of Norma Tac 22 floating around for around 11-12 cents/rd.  The gougers are still successful in perpetuating the myth and fanning irrational fears that the party controlling the executive branch is just minutes away from creating an executive order that will essentially do away with .22LR ammo forever.

  48. And this is how it gets perpetuated. Even if there were 1,000's of boxes of ammo and there was no shortage this idiot would still be telling people the 3 box limit is federal law. I would have gotten his name and contacted his district manager then follow that up with an email about your store experience through the Walmart website.   If an employee looks at me wrong that is what I do now, contact every boss between the employee and the district manager. I know every store manager by name as well as their boss and have all their numbers. I will not put up with minimum wage workers acting like I am some idiot. I have even had a worker call me an idiot when THEY could not find the item they told me was in stock over the phone. The same employee told me they were going to hang on to the game I was buying for my son to "keep me from stealing it". Both times I contacted store managers and followed it up on the website.   I have overheard the sporting goods supervisor recommend the best pellet rifle to a customer to kill the neighbors dog. He also said 1911s are designed to maim kids and he would never order hollow points because they are designed to "kill kids". He also said he would never sell military ammo and I have caught them hiding 5.56 under the counter several times per his orders. He HATES ARs and tries everything, including lying to customers, to try not to sell them. He told me all a person needs is a bolt action rifle. And yes I contacted his boss over all those comments.   I am spending my hard earned money there and I do not have to tolerate idiots.
