1. I'm so proud of my 14 year old daughter. She attends a private school. Her school requires all 8th grade students to do a 25 hour project and log their hours. I helped her with a couple of difficult cuts on the angle grinder and router but she did most everything on this. She even demonstrated it outside of her school. Her teacher was so excited to give it a try as soon as the teacher shot it she said "Well you'll be getting an A!". Other teachers heard about it and came out to give it a go. This was her project: -Stock is 2x4 pine -Trigger and mechanism is a flat piece of steel cut and bent after she heated it with a blowtorch. -Bow is a piece of 1" PVC heated and flattened then reheated and bent to shape. (People on the interwebs are getting 150lb draw on 1 1/2" PVC so we went with 1" -String is 550 paracord -bolt is an oak dowel rod with a penny ground into an arrow shape and packing tape fletching. ( I actually made this arrow, she made two like it with foam on the tips in case they wouldn't allow her to shoot the sharp one) Yup, my daughter rocks! -southernasylum

 2. Many moons ago my family and I were robbed in our driveway after returning from church. I was not carrying and there was no such thing as a HCP then anyways. I was pistol whipped on the forehead and the children were put against a wall of the house ( both around 10 - 13 years old ) , they took my wallet , house keys and my wife's purse. When I came to from the momentary black-out ( I hit the blacktop when the pistol hit my forehead , big blood puddle ) we got into the house by raising our manual garage door. I went to get my Sig P226 from the bedroom and racked the slide ( kept it with no round in the chamber ) and went outside searching through the bushes and dark looking for the robbers. Once the cops and ambulance got there I was treated and they left. I barricaded all doors that night until I could change the locks the next morning. While sitting in my den going over things at around midnight I decided to double check my pistol , guess what , no round in the chamber. I did not pull the slide back far enough when I thought I charged it. Funny thing is , I had $3 in my wallet , my wife $10 in her purse ; my 10 year old son , $60 in his wallet belt they did not get. The moral of this story is , load it , keep it loaded , otherwise it's a brick and you could be too.

 3. It's made from 1084 carbon steel 5/32" thick. Total length is just over 10" with a blade length of about 5 1/2". It's a big knife with indigo blue dymondwood for scales and stainless steel pins and lanyard hole. The spine has file work from the handle to about 1 1/2" from the point. As you can see it is a drop point design. I acid etched this blade except for the edge which I protected and also gave it a bit of a design. This knife turned out terrific...it's one of my favorites. The handle is made for a big hand. It's thick but nicely contoured to fit the hand. I'll be making more of this blade design in the future. It's of good size and the shape lends itself to many different design opportunities.

 4. Good things come to those who ask their wife nicely. I found and bought my dream gun today. A s&w 65-3 3" .357 mag, quite possibly the most utilitarian , practical handgun ever made. They were common on the used market about 10 years ago but then they dried up to where they do not hardly exist. The best part was I bought it at 10 years ago pricing. It was a Puerto Rican Police Trade in. I have all these 4" and 2" revolvers now that I do not have a use for because I have a 3" k frame.

 6.   The idea here is to build confidence by having gun ready to fire with no round loaded, to prove it won't go off.   Anyway, yes, rack the slide with no mag, then insert mag. Carry it same way then as you would if round were in chamber.   - OS

 7. Excuse me while I whip this out.... :) http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5PmnKOkt7fI I also can't imagine carrying anything bigger than 4" daily. Been carrying something about that size for dang near 40 years... Why change now? ;) Other than camping or just for show, a knife much bigger than that gets unwieldy... unless your name is Spots.

 8.
This is a very interesting topic to me, as I have two small children. I am currently looking for the "safest" hot weapon with a safety. I don't carry my revolver often for this reason. My children are constantly climbing on me, etc. Balls being thrown, airplanes, spills- you never really know :) I want to find the weapon through research and then train w it. But during that time of training- I may not carry chambered. Or I may only carried chambered away from the children or when I am in a situation that is quite uncomfortable. We travel a lot with the children and I carry hot in and out of restrooms and travel stop areas. But I am a nervous wreck the entire time. In the car it stays next to me in a gun vault and then unloaded when we are back w the husband or feel safe. I keep an unloaded shot gun near the bed as well when the husband is out of town. I wish I had the right answer and open to the right answer but it's like the threat that is apparent is the risk of my babies getting harmed...by me.Btw- I am taking opinions on a handgun that can safely be carried hot- with a safety, by a smaller framed female with smallish hands that can train to quickly disarm said safety, that wears tight clothes, runs, and has rheumatoid arthritis w a bit reduced grip strength that can't handle much recoil in a caliber that will drop a meth head and be enjoyable enough to practice with (lots) without flinching. :). Y'all know of one of those? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Ladyhay, I have 4 boys ages 4,5,10,13. My wife and I both carry glocks. She is a small framed woman similar description to yourself except without the arthritis. I carry with one in the chamber and she does not (most of the time). My kids climb all over me and use the gun in its holster as a step up at times. We have zero concerns with a unintentional discharge. With all of that said my kids also know that we carry and know what a firearm can do. My 5 year old has already began shooting at the range. When considering how to carry please consider what your other hand will be doing during an attack. I would bet that it will be sweeping the kids in a safe direction and loading a weapon will be the last thing on your mind. When you decide on your method of carry do it that way 100% of the time. Having it chambered here but not there is a sure way to find yourself in a bad place if you need that weapon. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

 10. I just hope they let Seth Macfarlanes team do the writing. The Simpsons writers have been coasting in neutral for some years now. Personally I thought the Futurama/Simpsons crossover would happen first. I'm a little disappointed that even after writing the book, they still haven't made the show.

 11. I bought a M&P .40 caliber compact a few weeks ago. Me being a rather large fellow with big hands the standard magazine just doesn't get it for me. I called into S&W Customer Service asking how I purchase a finger extension for the regular magazine since it wasn't listed online. They are sending me one without charge! That is great!!

 17. I lived there for 7 years.  I would recommend Maui, Kaui, or the Big Island.  Oahu isn't bad but you have to get away from downtown Waikiki sucks - the north shore is what it's all about but not a lot of restaurants shopping etc - so a car is a must. On a good day it's an hour easy to Turtle Bay driving from downtown the only real resort on the North Shore - most people rent the beach houses.   The Big Island and Kaui are my personal favorites, for the price though as others have said many an all inclusive vacations can be had for cheaper. Also, gas prices downtown will be $4.50 a gallon at least.

 18. Well, thinking it through further, I wouldn't find it strange for someone to have two guns, why not have two knives? And if you're going to have two knives, why not have one of them be bigger than you "need"? I'd have to be limited to the big folders, like the one Oh Shoot has. A belt knife at work wouldn't fly for a minute.

 19. Exactly, take out the magazine and pull the slide to charge the gun and then insert a magazine but remember if u get in trouble don't forget to rack it again to get it loaded and no worries being a newby we have all been there it takes time to get comfortable with a gun but u will get there and it is great from you to be on this forum and ask the questions, that's why we are here for - to help a fellow member and one more advice get to the range and shoot as much as u can afford it every other weekend will do and u will get to understand your gun quickly

 21. We pulled into Pearl a couple times, and I visited Maui once. Maui is really nice and laid back, if you were taking your family that included younger children I'd go there. If you a car and plan visiting the sites on Hana hwy, get insurance your rental; it gets tight. If you're wanting to do the Honolulu thing, rent a car or learn the bus routes because they rape you in cab fare. Waikiki is full of tourists and squids, it's not horrible but can be annoying I'd imagine if you're a family man. I'd stay on the north shore of Honolulu if that island is your choice, it's quieter and not a bad drive back to Waikiki. Hiking up diamond head is pretty. I really enjoyed the Atlantis submarine tours, taking an all-in-one hiking / biking / snorkeling tour, hiking some of the parks, and skydiving. If you've ever wanted to, skydiving over Hawaii is amazing and I'd recommend it even though it can be pricey. And go to a luau, they're touristy but pretty entertaining. The main tourist areas were safe, the back alley bars got a little dicey. Sent from the blue lagoon.

 22. I like the Big Island.  It's far better than the urban train wreck that is Honolulu.  Pearl Harbor is terribly sobering, but the rest of Honolulu just isn't worth it to me.    My wife and I stayed in the Hilton Waikoloa Village a couple of years ago, and I'd definitely recommend it.  I've stayed all over Waikiki Beach.  When I'm there, I like the Moana Surfrider.

 25.   This is the most important lesson from this thread.   Pretty much any time you hear of someone having a accidental discharge it's because the gun was in a poor holster (trigger not covered, or else the gun fell out) or else no holster at all.   Incidentally, I do know someone who learned to shoot with an old western-style single-action revolver (one that WOULD fire if you smacked the lowered hammer hard enough) who to this day carries a new hammerless DA LCR with an empty chamber on top.

 26. I practice (a little, not much) shooting out to 25 yards or even further... not so much because I expect to have an engagement at that distance, but because it improves my shooting abilities at shorter distances.  Fundamentals of marksmanship are tested more at longer ranges, therefore training at said ranges is a great diagnostic and teaching aid.   If I can hit a torso at 25 yards, I can hit a head at 7, or an eye 3.  :2cents:

 29. Oh, and notice in the Brassfetcher tests that the only FMJ tested pretty much overpenetrated - 20 inches in bare gelating and 18.4 through heavy clothing and into gelatin.  Those results also match with other tests I have seen.  That is why I would not be comfortable carrying FMJ in a .380.   A fellow going by the handle of GoldenLoki did a test of several .380 rounds, too.  He has since shut down his site but thankfully his results are still archived, somewhere.  His results showed that there are actually a few .380 hollowpoints that will expand and still meet or exceed the F.B.I. penetration requirement.  His tests also indicated that FMJ could be prone to over penetration (he got around 16 inches with the ones he tested.)  All of his .380 tests were from a P3AT.   http://web.archive.org/web/20121007184825/http://www.goldenloki.com/ammo/gel/380acp/gel380acp.htm   A .380 is not a .45, a .357, a .38 or a 9mm Luger.  That said, I really don't understand (given the results of tests such as the ones I have posted) why so many still look at the .380 with good, modern ammo as such a marginal round.  I know that Dave TN is a former police officer and that he has likely seen real life shootings with various calibers which have helped him form a real world opinion and I respect that.  That said, I would respectfully suggest that - due to the recent .380 craze and the ammo companies taking a fresh look at the .380 as a result - ammo development in the .380 may have advanced significantly since his time in the field.   The bullet diameter is considered a 9mm (it is called 9mm Kurz or 9mm short in other parts of the world..)  If it can expand and penetrate to 12 inches with the right ammo then what is so 'marginal' about it?  I do not mean that as a rhetorical question - I am far from an expert on the subject and really want to know why some folks consider a round that, with the right hp ammo, can expand and meet the F.B.I. penetration requirement to be 'marginal'.    The only thing 'marginal' I can think of is that ammo selection is very important in .380 - especially a small .380.  Much more important than in larger or 'heavier' calibers.  In more powerful handguns, just about any old hollowpoints might work (not necessarily but hopefully you get the point) but in .380 that is not the case - some work well and some do not.  You have to find one that works well in ballistics testing and functions well in your gun.

 32.   If you do not want a gun to fire then you simply don't pull the trigger...   A good friend came by one day with a new LCP in his pocket bragging on how small it was and when he showed it to me he exclaimed that the chamber was empty; when he handed it to me I set it down and promptly removed the staples from a desktop stapler and handed it to him and said here is a fair exchange....   I rough house with my grandkids all the time and usually I'm armed with a cocked & locked SIG P938 it does not worry me as I know that guns don't "just go off" while they are encased in a well made and well fitted holster

 33. probably the best advice for folks that are starting to carry a gun, every gun type except the revolvers, carry it cocked and without one in the chamber to get comfortable with it for few days and keep checking it and you will gain that trust in your gun and get a good holster that covers the trigger, there is nothing worse carrying chambered and being a nervous wreck and freaking out about it thinking it will fire on its own that is not safe for you or anyone around you.

 34.
Women have purses and us guys have holsters. At least it's like that with my wife and me. She has a crap load of purses and never seems to find the right one. The same goes with me. I have went through a ton of holsters and I am now narrowing it down to a few. This is getting expensive and it's got to stop  Who here also suffers from this infliction ? Here are my holsters I may keep but you never know :snore:
Finally a support group I fit in with. Most of the ones I own I've only used once or twice, enough to see they weren't for me. I don't have a count right now, but I know it's over 10. A lot of mine were just on sale at the time or something, I guess I haven't convinced myself that even though it's on sale, it still costs money. By the way tercel, do you like your alien gear holsters as much as I do?

 37. Yeah, I got a few lying around. Bought at odd times and places, for different guns an purposes. I should do as you do, tercel buddy. I really need only a few for the specific carry guns. But when you run across something...it's like...Wow. I can use that for this or that pistol. And I never do. I should go thru them again and let most go. And as I type this, there are 3 holsters staring back at me on the desk. Just daring me to get rid of them.

 39. Had a dog attack my wife in our yard a few years ago and the pistol I had on me had a empty chamber and malfunctioned hanging a round sideways when I racked the slide so I had to resort to knife and hand to hand combat with it. Since then all pistols are ready to go at all times and the shotgun is too. Btw the wife has great respect with what I can do with a blade if I have to now lol.

 40. I've lost interest in the 299 Days series. I just finished the 6th book I believe. These books provide very little value when you look at the pages and the price. At this point I think the author is just trying to drag it out of fatten his pockets. On top of that, it's boring.   6 books in and nothing has happned. Seriously, nothing. They killed one meth head and bugged out to a cabin. Whopped-dee-do. :snore:   The Holding Their Own series is leaps and bounds ahead of this.
