  2. So for the last few years, I've kind of wanted to get into making some blades, but haven't. Time and lack of tooling really put a damper on my plans. I told myself that I would start when I could find a decent deal on a grinder, but never got around to it. Well fast forward to the holidays last year, and I had a little time on my hands. I decided to give it a go without the expensive tooling and do it by hand. Here are the results of my efforts with nothing but hand tools - hacksaw, a couple of good files, and various sandpapers. This started as a piece of 3/16" O1 tool steel. Cutting it with the hacksaw didn't take nearly the time I thought it was going to. I have a bandsaw, but in the spirit of "handmade", wanted to try it with the hacksaw. I'd say it took about an hour to cut the profile. I then proceeded to clean it up with the files, and let me just say that a good file, kept clean can really remove some metal. I put together a jig to hold the blade, and each side took about an hour and a half to get where I wanted it. Mind you, I likely could have cut this down some, but my kids wanted to help and I went slow to keep from screwing it up. I finished the blade by getting it non-magnetic with a torch and a quench in warm oil. I then heat treated in a small oven a couple of different times. I wish I had taken some pictures of the blade at this point. The scales are some cedar heartwood I recovered. I sharpened it on a standard Lansky set and finished on a strop. I really put it through some torture and it held its edge better than a lot of factory knives I've owned. I'd say my overall time spent was about 8 hours. Here is the finished product: I guess the moral of this story is don't let a lack of power tooling stop you from doing something fun.

They should f'ng know better, and if they don't they should have never put a uniform on in the first place. There aren't too many things that made me lose my mind and go full NCO nut-crusher while I was in, but if I saw this it would be off the scales if these were my troops or if these clowns were within choking distance. If idiots like these end up carrying my body some day I swear I will haunt their sorry asses until the day they die. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

  5. My response to Sen. Ketron-- I hope I didn't go over the top. I Just tried to get a clarification on his objections:   "Mr. Adcock:   Thanks to both Sen. Ketron and yourself for your personal response. Perhaps I am missing something here, but I fail to see how the simple cosmetics of a knife would affect whether or not it would/could be used in a crime. The concern appears to be over the difference between an automatic knife designed for hunting purposes, and the classic Italian-style "stilletto". Currently, there are many, many legal knives which by design can be deployed as fast as the classic "switchblade". They are no more or less prone to be used in the commission of a crime. Given the logic offered in your response, my question would then be, does Sen. Ketron feel the same way about pistols vs. revolvers? That is to say, a 38 special revolver= "OK" but a Glock= "evil'? Both are perfectly legal, both accomplish the same purpose, but their appearance is very different. The simple fact is that the current bill actually imposes a stiffer penalty for use of an automatic knife in a crime than does the current law. Has this not been taken into consideration? I'm just trying to understand whether Sen. Ketron's position is dictated by logic, emotion, or political hubris in an election cycle. I don't mean that in a disrespectful way-- but I do understand that legislative positions and votes can be and are sometimes affected by political climate and current party leadership, regardless of constituency position. I have supported Sen. Ketron at the ballot box in the past, and would like to continue to do so. It is my hope that Sen. Ketron will re-evaluate his current position on SB1771 and re-consider supporting this bill in its current form. Again, thank you for your time and your response. It is VERY greatly appreciated."       I doubt that anything will change. But no response on my behalf would indicate that I was satisfied with his position.

  6. That video really shows how fast this crap happens. I've told my wife time and again to keep a gun nearby when I'm gone. You don't have time to get one out of a safe in that kind of situation. No kids at home of course. These thugs were in the house in less than 5 seconds from the first kick.

  8. That's pretty well spot on. I have a couple of friends that are communists. I don't mean commie like your average college age liberal idiot or teamster boss, but red dyed in the wool, celebrating Che's birthday card carrying members of the CPUSA commies. These are guys I consider friends and have had plenty of arguments and debates about politics over beers. I don't have any desire to stick a gun in their face or gut them and hang them by their own intestines because they have no ability to be a danger to myself or my family. They don't have the ability to get together with a couple of other folks, take a vote and then grant themselves the power to take my life, liberty or property with the ability to send armed folks to my door. They don't have a national audience and use it to sell the lies of thieves and murderers and increase the power of the state to control the lives of the citizenry. My two friends and I have a difference of political opinions, The bastards that I am talking about that need shooting have the means to enforce their will upon me.

  10. Any group or person who publically disrupts or disrespects anyone's funeral for any reason, including Jane Fonda's future internment, IMO, is of the lowest moral character and is reprehensible.   Our American flag is a symbol of our great nation and our loved one's who have fought and died, got disfigured and maimed for life to protect our freedoms, loved ones and posterity. Either you respect it's symbolic meaning for which it stands or you don't.   Speaking as a veteran, I've fought for other's freedoms I don't necessary agree with, but non-the-less contrary to popular belief, freedom and individual rights are not free. If I were in attendance at a military veterans funeral and the flag was not draped correctly, I would immediately be the first to correct it and admonish those responsible. God forbid, if I were in attendance at any funeral where intentional disrespect and disruption were openly shown by individual(s), especially a veteran or loved one... It would be my duty and my honor to serve out the punishment twelve of my peers might impose on me in a court of law.   If these groups of clowns believe they have the "moral right" to disrupt or disgrace a military funeral or veterans funeral, sooner or later they're going to run into a veteran with an attitude on such.   If you can't tell, I may not like many of our politicians or the direction our nation is heading but... I'm damn proud of our military, our veterans and their loved one's. I'm especially proud and indebted to those that gave their last measure of self, suffer life long emotional and physical trauma and their families.   I'd like to see an accurate poll of Americans who think Veteran's Day is more about bar-b-que  than those that served our nation?   Rant / Off

  11. There is NO excuse for sloppy folding of an american flag that's just doing a bad job.   As to the honor guard goofing off with the empty casket that's actually more common that you might think, though sharing it publicly was a terrible misstep. Humor is many people's way of coping with death. I see it often in funeral staff, coroners, and even our trauma docs. Though it should never be allowed to disgrace a person's funeral.   http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2009-02-25/news/0902230153_1_humor-deputy-coroner-sense

  14. Back when I was just a kid I worked for a company after high school each day for a full shift and it was a family owned company. Right after I went to work there I learned there was a steel workers Union trying to get their foot in the door. They had been trying for about two years and had not made it yet. I had a guy that worked there ask my how I felt about the plant going union and I said I think it would suck and he walked away. When I got out of school I kept the job and I saw the man that owned that company help out a lot of people that fell on hard times. sickness, deaths in a family, even if the guys kids just needed shoes and clothes to begin school with he made sure they had the money. Every 4th of July he would pay to have an amusement Park come and set up for the entire weekend and it was all free. Even the food. Every Thanks giving every employee got a huge basket of food and a Turkey. At Christmas every employee got another basket full of food and a ham was in the basket. I mean this guy didn't have 10 or 15 employees. They ran 2 shifts and each shift has about 200 people working or more on it. Everyone got a 1 week paid vacation the first year and after 5 years you got 2 weeks paid. Paid time and a half for overtime. I mean the guy ran a great company. I was getting ready to enter the military so I had left the job but he told me when I returned I would have a job. Well I had made a few friends while there and we wrote back and forth and I learned that about a year later after I left all at once there was a walk out and people wanted to vote in a Union. And they did and that was in May of 1968 and the employees got a 2 year contract with the union and an across the board 80 cents an hour raise. And Union Dues which consumed about all of that 80 Cents raise they got which quite a few there was husbands and wives both working there paying double dues. The owner didn't say one word about them and their union. Even gave the guy from the union an office all of his own. About a week later a guy got hurt while at home and couldn't come to work and had a large family. When he was able to get up and out with the cast on his leg he came to the owner and asked him about a loan. All the owner did was tell the man to go ask your union man for a loan and pointed to his office. Needless to say the man didn't get no loan. Come 4th of July they didn't get an amusement park all free either which had been going on for about 20 years. Thanks giving came and went along with Christmas and there was no food baskets. You see unions don't give those or loans or amusement parks. All they do is collective bargaining for your contracts on raises and benefits and take money from you for dues. During the first year of the contract the owner because turning a lot of jobs into automated positions and began putting in robotic lines to do the work the humans were doing and the robots didn't have a union so he could work them 24/7 with out paying overtime. By the time the 2 year contract was up the plant was about 70% automated. Union guys office was empty. He had moved on about 5 months earlier. When the contract was up the union was gone but they got paid right up until the last day of that contract and dues were taken out for exactly 24 months but the Union was gone because the number of employees had dropped to make it not profitable for them to be their. The union could not force him to keep people employed when that persons position was taken by a robot. Once the plant went almost completely robotic the Owner and his family sold it, moved out west where they had another plant operated by people. Never heard any more about them after that but I did learn a lot about Unions and I wasn't even there. Got a lot of letters keeping me updated..................................jmho

I am soooo ready!  How about you?  What signs have you seen?   Yesterday, I had to drive by a swampy area on my way to lunch, and I heard the first sounds of spring, those spring frogs aka spring southern peeper frogs, sure were in concert loudly.  Other than Daytona 500 this weekend, this is truly the first nature's sign of spring I have seen this year.  This has been truly a bad winter by Tennessee (East) standards.   I remember last year, my Easter flowers were in full bloom in late January.  This year, the same flowers have not even broke the ground yet.  One other sign, not a nature sign, but my young boys have their first baseball practice of the season 2 weeks from this Saturday.  That is always a sign of Spring.  I can't wait to start up my shooting clays, and my soon 10 year old will get to join me this year with his soon to be owned O/U 410.  This is a gun forum, I had throw that one in!

If you want a fairly good explanation here is a good read. http://forums.1911forum.com/showthread.php?t=416928   You will also need to know if your current grips are cut for an Ambi Safety. If not, you could cut them yourself. Or buy them (what I'd do) already cut.   I personally don't trust myself enough to install one. And honestly I would advise you to take t to a professional and have it done. You really can't put a price on SAFETY.

The funny thing is that they changed it to help farmers, but it didn't matter to most farmers. The time on the clock didn't matter, every farmer I know works from dawn till past dusk. The amount of daylight doesn't change, just what time the clock says, and when you are a farmer or someone else doing that type of work, the clock doesn't matter. Tapatalk ate my spelling

  31.   That would be "Smart Gun" feature 2.0 After implementing and requiring gun smart features, instead of posting signs on doors businesses would also pay the "smart gun" companies to install devices in buildings that would disable "smart guns" based upon RFID technology, geofencing, radio frequency, etc. Carry your smart gun into a restaurant that doesn't allow carry? Don't worry, you are safe because they disable all the guns (except the black market "dumb guns" and of course those of LEO's whom are all trustworthy).   An alternate future shows that instead of doing what I've shown above, perhaps in order for the gun to fire you have to be wearing your "tag" if you will but also be within range of an acceptable "use" tag. Examples of acceptable "use" tags would be at a shooting range, on a reserved hunting area, etc. Then your firearm would only fire within specific areas. For a lot of money you could have a tag installed in your home so you could use it for self defense, but only after you go through lots of classes and training. For the extremely privileged, you could have a "use" tag installed in your wallet so you could carry.   Just my pondering but also all possible with existing technology. It would only need to be implemented. Of course criminals could easily circumvent it all, but possible if the legislature and research simply pushed it. I think I will write a book on it. Quite scary stuff.

  32. Since your question is rhetorical I’m not sure if you are trying to elicit a response or merely making a statement. It’s illegal for the average citizen to carry a gun in Illinois; same as it is in Tennessee. We have legislation proposed here to change that but I’m told by those in the know it’s impossible that it will pass in this state. Meanwhile the Illinois Supreme Court has ruled that restricting carry off your property is an infringement on your rights. So things may change there before they do here, we will have to wait and see. The Officers at the scene can’t make a ruling in a shooting so of course his gun was taken; as it would be by any investigators doing their job. If that’s a big deal to you make sure you have a backup. The States Attorney will make a call on the shooting and the gun should be returned. The only time I have seen a DA blatantly refuse to return a gun to someone was here. I sold a gun to a guy in another county. It was then stolen in a burglary of his home. They caught the burglar and recovered the gun. The DA had the guy come to court and testify in the trial that the gun was his and it was stolen. He contacted me because he lost his bill of sale and without it the DA would not give him the gun back. I don’t pretend to be a lawyer but it seems unprofessional to me that a prosecutor would put someone on the stand to testify to ownership of a stolen gun and then refuse to accept that testimony himself. There will be a huge investigation in this case but it will be on finding the two guys that got away and trying them on murder charges. The video pretty clearly shows what happened with this guy. The investigation of him won’t last long; the fact that he is a cop will make little difference.

The next one is a set of outdoor urinals at a warehouse in Bangkok, mostly women worked there so modesty was not really an option & lastly that was the toilet at said facility., the idea was to do your business wipe with your hand, rinse it in the foam cooler of water then scoop enough water into the bowl to get it to flush. 40.   Damn skippy.  I saw the ammo shortage coming and, unlike many, had a feeling that .22 would be included this time so I put a little back before it got scarce/ridiculously priced.  Thing is, I expected .22 ammo - mostly bulk packs - to be scarce for a year or so.  I didn't expect it to all but completely disappear, even in 50 round boxes, for three or more years.  Therefore, I have enough .22 ammo on hand that I can shoot my .22 rifles and handguns a little from time to time but I certainly don't have enough to maintain the level of .22 shooting I was doing, before and will have to ration what I do have if it is really going to be two years before the industry catches up.   I have been hoping that things on the .22 ammo front might start turning around by this summer.  The Winchester rep's statement is disappointing but I am still holding some hope that we might see improvement - may not 'normal' but at least noticeable improvement - later this year.  One, big thing that gives me hope is that Remington has said that they are expanding their ammo factory in Arkansas to help keep up with the rising demand.  Yeah, I know that Remington bulk pack stuff isn't generally the best but having compared results on paper (by which I mean shooting paper targets) between the 'new, improved' golden bullets and some older ones, I think Remington really has made them better.  Besides, for plinking as long as the ammo is minute of plastic soft drink bottle I'll shoot it with a big grin on my face and save the 'better' ammo in case I need it for something else.

  43. I agree about the pitfalls of opening a new rim fire manufacturing plant. It would take years to see any profit and this panic will be over by then. But you might catch the next one. Also agree that only higher prices will quell the demand. That's the only thing to do in this situation. People spew vitriol on cheaper than dirt and the resellers, then brag about having bought all the 22 ammo available when they saw it on the shelf. By doing so they're justifying the existence of the very companies/people they hate for raising prices. Personally I'm just going to shoot less 22, maybe 100 rounds a month. At that rate I could go several years before my supply started to get too low for comfort. Hopefully before then it'll come down in price. But I'm also preparing myself mentally to pay higher prices. We'll see how this year goes.

  44. The 7th and the 9th Federal District Courts have fallen right in line with the SCOTUS and Heller. The Illinois State Supreme Court has ruled that infringing on carry off your property is a violation of the 2nd amendment. Who here that has been in this battle for the last 40 years ever thought they would see this much action in a couple of years. The 7th and the 9th making pro-gun rulings????? I got really frustrated when some of the folks here new to this said we need to take baby steps. We have been doing that all our lives. Some of these crazy laws being passed in other states will not stand. But don’t let what’s going on in those states get you so upset you forget what’s going on here. 49. So over the past month I have been hanging out on this website. http://www.nightvisionforumuk.com/index.php Because they really do not have a firearms market anymore accessories like night vision are also not readily available. So what do they do? They make their own using readily available and cheap security cameras. You can get everything from just the camera board to complete security cameras that you must take apart to use. How this works is there is always infrared light which is invisible to mamals but visible to these digital cameras once you remove the IR filter. Every camera comes with an IR filter because there is no need to see it. And also because when you remove the filter the visible and IR signals are slightly different which can cause some blurriness with cameras. But it is not that bad. So what I did is start researching which cameras were best. And it comes down to two choice as far as criteria. you either get light gathering ability or high resolution. Lower resolution may sound bad but when "low" resolution is still better than the screen there is not need to loose light gathering for resolution you will not use. So I chose the best chipset for light gathering, except for a brand new $700 camera fro Watec. The best is a chipset called a ICX633/632 and it is 2x-3x better at light gathering than the camera with the highest resolution. It is a great trade off unless you are using a BIG screen but on a weapon you do not want, or need, a huge screen. Now this setup is more of a one off setup because I enclosed the camera in a project box for a clean appearance. But it is possible to have a setup that requires very little custom work. And how much do I have in this setup? Honestly it went a little higher than I wanted but I have less than $130 in the entire setup. I started with this board camera: http://www.aliexpress.com/snapshot/6006732453.htmlhttp://www.aliexpress.com/item/NTSC-1-3-Inch-Sony-CCD-Sensor-Board-ICX632-CXD4140-D5148-520TVL-NTSC-Signal-System/763678504.html You will notice a screen on the front of the lens, that is the IR filter and the manufacturer will remove that for you when you order. The back has two plugs. One is for the power and video signal and the other is for the On Screen Display that allows you to make adjustments to the camera. And because light gathering is the priority I decided to upgrade from a standard lens to a CS mount. The CS lens is larger lens so it allows more light through. The seller also sells the CS mount and the correct 16mm lens for use behind a scope. http://www.aliexpress.com/snapshot/6006732455.html And because you have the ability to change settings you must have the OSD cable. This is the one that I bought and it works great. If you notice the pictures below you will see how it is wired into the plug because it does not come wired. http://www.aliexpress.com/snapshot/6006732456.html The housing I bought was actually recommended by someone and it was the wrong one. It was not deep enough for the board above so I had to drill a clearance hole for a diode, see pictures below. I think this is the correct housing or at least it is deeper than the one I bought. http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Indoor-Metal-MTV-Mini-Metal-Housing-for-CCTV-38-38mm-Security-Camera-free-shipping/1150236035.html And because I knew I would eventaully not have to use the OSD cable I ordered these. It allows me to power the board and send the video single without all the extra wires of the OSD cable. http://www.aliexpress.com/snapshot/6006732457.html Now we need a way to power everything. For that you need a 12V DC battery. I ordered one that is way too big for my needs but it should have run times measured in days rather than hours. I ordered this one. http://www.aliexpress.com/item/6800mAh-DC-12V-Super-Rechargeable-Lithium-ion-Battery-Pack-EU-Plug/1401084329.html Next we need a screen to view everything. I ordered a 3.5" TFT screen like this one. http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-5-Digital-TFT-LCD-Screen-Rear-View-Monitor-Car-Reverse-Camera-DVD-VCD-/161052693327?pt=US_Rear_View_Monitors_Cams_Kits&hash=item257f7d134f It was cheaper on Ebay so I ordered from there. And finally we need a cable to power everything up. And Ebay provided this as well. http://www.ebay.com/itm/390576798464?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT Now that we have all the parts assembled how do we mount it? Because the camera needs to be centered in the scope I used the scope rings that were the same height for the scope as well as the camera. The camera itself is 30mm so you need rings that support 30mm and the scope which for me was 1". And athough it is not in the pictures these are the ones I ordered. I ordered two sets, two rings for the scope and one ring for the camera. http://www.ebay.com/itm/141172611188?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 I also bought a IR bulb for my Surefire. It works great and gives a fair amount of IR light out to about 100 yards. http://www.ebay.com/itm/850nm-CREE-IR-LED-NVG-Spare-Bulb-Surefire-501B-502B-and-Hugsby-Flashlight-/181280294546?pt=US_Flashlights&hash=item2a3525c692 Now the camera needs to be about 2" behind the scope so you may have to move your scope forward. Or another way to do it is to use a seperate picatinny rail that goes from a single ring installed at 270 degrees on the scope to the scope at the rear. Here is a good video showing the setup: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wnNFR99xGI I wanted mine to be more permanent for now and although I can use the method above I plan on making another NV setup that will be able to be moved from gun to gun. I mounted the camera in a "project box" from Radio Shack. It cost something like $4. I also added a 5.5mmx2.1mm femal plug to get power into the box. The plug was like $3 So here are some pictures of my setup: I do not have my dedicated battery pack yet so this is just a pack that uses either AA batteries. Here is the camera installed in a "project box" to protect it some. The bottom plug is the video and power. The empty plug on the left is for the OSD. I just need to plug in the OSD cable to make adjsutments to the camera. The plug is from Radio Shack to supply power and I cut a RCA cable in half and passed it through the glued it in place. I also glued the camera in place. And all I need to do is remove the back cover to make OSD adjustments. Here is the front side of the "Project box" with all the connections as well as the camea passing through. The accordian looking thing is an eyepiece you can buy off of Ebay. I use it to keep the light from the screen from entering the camera. And here it is all buttoned up. So how well does it work? Let me start by saying that the screen shots do not do it justice. It is extremely clear but when you try to take a picture of a digital device when using a digital device it never looks all that great. Here is how the reticle looks throught he camera. You use your scope to zero so all the adjustments are the same, you are just looking at a screen rather then through and objective. Here is a picture of my neighbors house 100 yards away as seen with your naked eye: And here is the same view through the DIY night vision. Again the quality sucks because of the camera but you can see all the light the camera is picking up. And this is without the scope setup to run night vision only. It can be used at dat or at night. I could have got it much brighter had I set it up for night only. And this is without any weapon mounted illumination. And here is in total darkness with an IR bulb in a Surefire. The distance is 25 yards. I am sure i am missing a bunch of stuff but I will add as I remember. The scope used was a 1.5x6 and you see exactly what is in the scope. If you use higher magnification the field of view shrinks just like a regualr scope. I will post a parts list as soon as I order another setup and that will happen when the Chinese New Year is over in a few weeks. I am going to talk to the supplier to see if they can setup a DIY kit where the camera can be bought with the correct case, lens, OSD cable, screen, battery and cables. If they can then it will be so easy to setup. I am going to be ordering a few more setups to try to figure out an easy way to duplicate for those who are like me and are technologically handicapped. Ask away.
