  2. I walked into Academy this morning about 15 minutes after they opened. As I wished the greeter a good morning my eyes rested on what appeared to be ammo....22 AMMO...!!!  So, I did this  :stunned: and they were still there. So I headed that way like a dog after a soup bone. There were 3 other guys headed that way and I  :panic:  and picked up my pace...the race was on!!! I managed 3rd place in the race and I saw 4 boxes of 525 round Remington and maybe 50 boxes of some other brand I'm not familiar with. But then I thought....what is the limit???  Well the lady told the first two guys who were together they could buy 1 of the bricks or 10 boxes of the other (It think that's what she said. I am pretty deaf). They began a long discussion about which was the better ammo and this went on for what seemed an eternity but was actually only a minute or so. I became very  :bored:  :waiting: with this and began to feel that  :panic: feeling again so I asked one of the ladies if I could go ahead and purchase one of the bricks. Well the sales people were looking at them both like this  :shake: and this  :grouchy:.  She was very glad to hand me a box and get the ball rolling. i paid and  I was instantly feeling  :biglol:  :hyper:   , took my brick and headed to fishing dept and got some hair jigs. But I suppose the jigs can wait.  It's off to the range with my buckmark, my walther P22, and my new CZ 452...!!!! Like the song goes...."Life is good today..."   THE END.

  3. About a month ago I didn't own a Glock. Didn't like 'em, didn't want one. That all changed when a guy let me shoot his Gen 4 G19 one day. I liked it, I REALLY liked it. Don't really know how it happened but after today I now own 3 of these butt ugly abominations. I picked up a Gen 4 G34 to keep my 19 and 26 safe. Hopefully I've got whatever it is out of my system and can go back to lusting over 1911's. Now excuse me while I go find a set of competition sights and a magwell for the 34.

I ain't fightin'  :poop:   If there's ANY possible way to run, I'll be diggin' a trail as good as any coward on earth. :leaving: If I can't get away and there's a threat to me or my wife....that's why I carry.  I leave the fisticuffs to the UFC guys I watch on TV.     I've found that holding your tongue and looking with both eyes goes a LOOONNNGGG way in preventing the need to brawl.

  11. Ironically, I think the "Car Carry" bill that did pass will cost the state a lot more money in permit revenue than permitless open carry.    I know quite a few people that only want to get an HCP to carry in their vehicle.  I don't know anyone who didn't already have an HCP that was planning on open carrying if the law passed.

  12.   Its really frustrating talking to the TV people who are so far behind.   If you want to know what happens, you can read it and get way, way ahead of the show, but I think he stopped writing to play with the TV series ... been stuck with nothing new for a while now.  Ive been waiting for a new book for at least a year?

  16.   That's a very good question. And I don't think there's a correct answer here either.   I'd consider purpose first. What are you going to do with it? Range and target use? Home protection? Car gun? Or for carry later? Caliber? Barrel length? All manner of questions you need to answer here.   Since you brought up the 686, let's start with that. You know you can shoot 38 in a revolver chambered for 357, right? Just not the reverse. So first off, I'd look for one chambered for the 357 to give you the caliber versatility. 38 for target and practice, and the 357 for defensive use. And there are several frame sizes as well to look at; j-frame and k-frame probably the most common. But the j-frame is pretty much going to be 1.5 or 2 in, and for me, not real comfortable to shoot 357 in.   But in the K-frame size, there are many choices available for a first Smith revolver that won't cost nearly as much as the 686. Model 65, 66 guns are pretty common and can be gotten usually for half the price of the 686.   Another is my personal favorite, the Model 19.     Some consider it to be the pinnacle of the Smith wheelie. Probably in the 500 range on them. Good quality revolver that won't break you. Shoot 38 loads in it and it's a pleasure. It will also tame the 357 fairly well. You'll know you fired off a little more than a 38, but not unmanageable or painful to shoot.   You came to the right place to start asking questions. No, not me, but TGO in general. There's a lot of good, friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable guys, and gals, to get with here.    And one not  too far from you. At the risk of sticking foot in mouth here, DrAlarms is in the Athens area just as an example. Not suggesting you try to track him down, but there's a lot of guys who would probably be glad to help close by you.   And talk with the guys at your local gun shop(lgs). Ask them for help. Rent a couple of guns and try them out.   But above all, make your own decision. Whatever feels right for you. Not what someone says is right for you.   And btw, welcome to TGO. Come back often. Ask. Comment. Learn. And most of all...Enjoy.

  18. In no particular order: Cozy Corner Neely's Interstate BBQ Memphis BBQ in Southaven, MS One and Only BBQ Corky's That being said, I think we have it pretty good when it comes to having good barbecue. We probably have pretty high standards for that reason. Those folks in Kansas City just think they know how to BBQ. :)

  19. Rendezvous is highly overrated IMHO...the novelty value of restaurant is ok...but the BBQ is no better than the "fast food " variants...

  20. I saw the first episode last night on FX. Dark humor like the movie starring Billy Bob Thorton. I liked it personally, thought it was pretty good keeping up with the Coen brothers type of humor.

  22.   Good choice there, tnguy. Rick Wakeman, Al Stewart, Moody Blues, Jethro Tull, Queen, and Dire Straits also.   I listen to about anything, but the above are some of my favs for when the wife isn't home. I have some 20 year old Denon equipment mated to a pair of 30 year old 200 watt Kenwood speakers. I can rattle the house, or just have the smoothest, clearest sounds I want out of them.   I really need to listen to more music at home.

  27. I would agree they are better out of the box, and a good smith can improve them. But the Rugers aren't bad, cost less, and as I'm a fan of pointing out, you won't find too many, if any "S&W only" loads. They are just crazy beefy. I'd recommend one as a first gun if someone really wanted a revolver. I think Ruger is on top of the heap for best (American made) overall value for the money. S&W is great, but the saved cash can go a long way toward ammo. Having said that I would recommend going to a few shops and putting as many in your hands as possible. If you can rent them to shoot, even better.

  29. Ok, I can appreciate that. I know a wee bit about knives, but had never heard of this company before. Like I said, I don't mind paying more as long as I am really getting more for my money rather than paying for a name (I buy Wrangler jeans and not Levi's because they fit better and hold up just as well for half the cost, but I will spend more to buy a Sig over others without batting an eye because I think it's worth it). I want a solid carry blade that will last a long time and I certainly appreciate a finely crafted product made by an American small business, much like the Seecamp I own.

  30. Justice Antonin Scalia was at UT Law School today. My son went to his talk. Someone asked the Justice what decision he was most proud of. His answer, District of Columbia v. Heller. He also stated that anyone that thinks the second amendment only applies to the national guard is a complete moron. we need a few more Justices like Scalia

  31. Just so everyone is clear this law was passed in 2013 (last year) and the CA's database was last updated before that law went into effect.

  32.   Well, one thing that's not in either the last version or this version: any actual penalties for anyone who does get hold of the data and uses it? Matter of fact, there's no penalty in the bill for even releasing it -- maybe state employees violating any state law without specific penalty mentioned is blanket covered elsewhere, dunno.   - OS

  34. I've never gone, watched a TV show that expose'd that place about 10 years ago so that sort of killed my curiosity for the place. Anyway as far as BBQ I typically make my own, mostly because if I try to eat BBQ I end up wearing half of it, so I will order something less messy off a resturant's menu. If I ever shave off my beard I'll have to go try some of these places though.

  36. Lemme tell you how this is going to work since I've been suckered into more than one of those modern live dare-devil shows...for two hours you'll sit there while they show the same thing over and over going on and on about what a dangerous and death-defying attempt this is.  A good hour of that two will be commercials.   When it comes time for the feat they will either cancel or it or something will go wrong with one of the cameras so you don't get to see anything worthwhile or it will just in fact be so completely boring you'll want to throw something at the TV.

  37. I'll let someone more versed in Pro Tech answer but I will throw in that EDC is a Benchmade Presidio Tanto. It's an awesome knife with quality steel blade that had lasted many years and hold an edge for a long time. I paid $165 for it on sale. Quality steel on a quality handle/scales and then you add in the fast auto action. I find the value at that price easy to spot

  39. A 4" 686 is not bad with magnums and they aren't that hard to find(pricey, but worth it). It's not like you are stuck with magnums, .38 spl ammo would be mild.

  47. Here's the biggest issue I've seen (including on this forum and in my own family) from "pro-2A citizens" - they don't support it because they HAVE or CAN GET an HCP and they don't want other's rights expanded for fear of additional postings.  I can guarantee if you were in a position where you were  a law abiding citizen but could not get an HCP for some reason, you would be all for it.  I have yet to see all of those with the Gadsden DTOM and mall ninja Facebook pictures put their money with their mouth is and actually support one of the biggest advances in TN Firearms laws in the past decade.  I can guarantee you, not all people who would be open carrying if this law passed would be the **** that walks around Walmart with a 6" Taurus Judge in a nylon Uncle Mike's Holster to act like a badass. While OC isn't ideal, if its passed, I damn sure will carry everywhere that isn't posted because its MY only option.     *I'm sure this post will piss people off, so rant over - I don't mean to anger anybody, but provide another perspective on this bill*

  48. For some of you retired guys, this could be your contribution to the ammo shortage. Create you a favorite sellers list of resellers and go every couple of hours and flag all obvious resellers posts. Maybe they would get the point we made it harder to market their product. 49.   Think? Hell, it's well documented damn near 1:1 correlation with Type 2 (80% or more).  It's not so much that "obesity causes diabetes" as it is that "overeating, especially carbs and sugar, causes both", and the two conditions then become synergistic.   Simply stated,  with vast over consumption of carbs and sugar, the pancreas just can't keep the insulin production up to regulate the resultant glucose, plus all the excess not used for energy is stored as fat, which makes the whole system less efficient in general and also changes body chemistry,  especially in the liver so that the existing insulin is less efficiently utilized.   - OS
