  1. Things that make you go . . . hmmmmmm . . . . ‘Guns Are Welcome’: One Restaurant Bucked a Trend — Here’s What Happened Next Jul. 19, 2014 11:23am Zach Noble As many restaurants, including Starbucks, Sonic and Chili’s, tell customers to leave their guns at home, one restaurant in East Tennessee took a different approach — and gained quite a few customers. Sharma Floyd, owner of Shiloh Brew and Chew, adopted a gun-friendly policy after she read about other restaurants banning firearms, WBIR-TV reported. “[The other restaurant] had put up a sign that said ‘No Weapons Allowed’ and they were robbed at gunpoint two days later,” Floyd recounted. “That got me thinking.” She posted a “Guns are Welcome” sign on the front door of her establishment about a month ago, and since then, she says business has really picked up. Image source: screengrab via WBIR-TV “I can honestly say I’ve gotten way more support than the one person who really gave me a lot of grief over it,” said Floyd. ”I have had so many customers take pictures of the sign, ask to meet me in person, and thank me.” Floyd says she keeps some safety precautions in mind — for instance, she won’t serve beer to customers who are carrying firearms — and so far the policy seems to be doing nothing but good things for her business. “There have been as many as eight people in here at one time who I know for a fact had guns,” Floyd said. “And no one would have known it except I know them personally. They’re law abiding, god fearing, Christian people. And that’s what I stand on. That’s what my restaurant is based on. ” http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2014/07/19/guns-are-welcome-one-restaurant-bucks-a-trend-and-sees-dramatic-results/

  2. I consider myself a good judge of character, however, recently I placed my faith in several seemingly good people and did some very big favors, only to be screwed hard by those people. Adding insult to injury would be several other events occurring over the past few weeks in which I had no control over and had depend on folks to do the right thing, only to be let down big time and suffer the negative consequences. Understandably, I have been pretty upset, and have rapidly expanded a few peoples' vocabulary and tossed a few nuke rounds in recent days. The end result was making a pact with myself that I will never, ever put myself out there for a stranger again, nor will I trust anyone who is not verified. Up until now, I've used my keen sense of a person's character to determine who is worthy of my trust. Now I've resolved that close friends and family are the only folks who deserve it. Then yesterday, a series of unforeseen events unfolded at exactly the wrong time, which seems to be a trend this month. I found myself in a catastrophic situation in a place far from home and far from those I depend on, and I required immediate assistance from a stranger. Much to their inconvenience and potential hazard, a good person stepped in and gave me a hand. It was something they didn't have to do and could have easily gone past, but they didn't. What bothers me today is that I never had the opportunity to thank this person, due to the circumstances. I wish I could thank him for not only his help, but also for restoring my faith in people. If not for this person I would have been in a very bad situation which would have become much worse. Afterward, I thought about if this person didn't exist and no one came to my aid. We live in a society of growing indifference to our fellow man, and I believe my recent declaration has made me part of the problem. If roles had been reversed, would I have done the same thing? Before, absolutely. Now, not so much. So I'm recanting the pact I made, and I owe some serious karma to my fellow man, even if it means assuming risk. If I get screwed, I'm gonna be okay with that. We shouldn't let those that would take advantage of us change who we are, or stop us from doing the right thing. I know I'm more cynical and callous than the vast majority of society, but I'm not gonna let that affect my decision making. Now that I'm finally home with my wonderful wife and kids, the unbridled rage that I've had toward those that effed me doesn't seem to burn hot anymore. The only things I want to remember about the past few weeks are the people who helped me, and why that is more important than the people who screwed me. Sorry for being so vague, but I didn't want to type a seemingly endless bitch session about all the wrongs in my world. I hope this helps a few folks out who have lost faith in people, and I hope there are a few others who will find inspiration to perpetrate some random acts of kindness. 6. TGO'r Plinker4life furnished the stock and pillar bedded it (I refinished it such as it is), Dolomite Supafly tuned the bolt, I cut down a 150.00 barrel to 18.5 inches and recrowned it. Pliner4life redid the trigger and it is perfect for this. This thing is a moving target annihilator. That C-More is the perfect match for this at standard squirrel or rabbit distances. Now I need to get a decent sling for it and it is done.

  8. I traded for this with another TGO'r last week. It already had the Boyd's stock and had the trigger spring out and I think some minor polishing. Anyway, measured with my Lyman digital trigger scale and it is a crisp safe 1lb 2oz. Shoots like a dream. Oh yeah, it is a Ruger American Rimfire Compact with a Boyd's stock. The stock hooks to the barrelled action in two places so isn't as prone to movement as the 10/22 might be. It uses 10/22 mags which is useful.I actually like shooting this better than the CZs, older Mossbergs or other bolt .22s I have had.

  9. You know, life's really short. Faith And hope are good things. The world is a cruel place, but I kind of believe that only by putting ourselves out there for others can we really put ourselves in a position to really receive the help others give us. Call it karma, do unto others, whatever... Regardless, life's just really short.

  10. I have a buddy that lives in Philadelphia PA-- while not a full-blown hoplophobe, he had very little experience with firearms, and was generally fearful of them, primarily due to a scary childhood experience. His general take on firearms was the usual "respect your right to own guns but public safety trumps all" mentality.   Well, he was in town last weekend, and my fiancee and I decided to take him to OK Corral in Woodbury. We went late Sunday afternoon and the place was practically empty, most likely due to the oppressive July heat.   Started him out at the pistol range with simple stuff like a Ruger Single Six, and gradually moved him up the scale to a P226, and a Taurus Judge-- handling empty firearms first to get a feel for each of them before ever putting the first round in. My fiancee is an NRA certified instructor and CRSO, and she took him through each firearm at a relaxed pace, explaining (and making him memorize) the 4 rules of firearm safety, and explaining in detail the differences between each gun. Come to find out he's actually pretty good with a pistol.   Before we left, we visited the rifle range, and again started him out easy with a Henry .22-- after running through a couple of boxes of .22, I broke out the Mosin M44, just for a demonstration-- I didn't intend to let him fire it since I didn't want to lose the progress we had made that day by scaring him out of his wits. However, after I ran five rounds through the M44, he was standing there, with his mouth open in awe at the sound and the muzzle blast. He actually insisted that he have a chance to shoot the Mosin. I reluctantly explained that this rifle was nothing like he had shot so far that day, and it probably wasn't a good idea... I lost. As I conceded, I walked him through the basics of the unloaded rifle, explaining how to hold it, how to sight it, etc. just as we had done on the pistol range.   The biggest reward was the huge grin on his face when he fired his first shot with the M44. It was so worth it. As we drove home, he kept saying how much fun he had, and how glad he was that he had experienced and patient instructors. We discussed the possibility of him owning a gun in the future, and while he said he probably wouldn't, he did sheepishly admit that we had changed his mind (positively) about quite a few of his misconceptions about guns...   So, while he's not a converted firearms enthusiast yet, at least we're off to a positive start!

  11. I'm older than you, and can assure you that the adage is certainly more true that not that "few good deeds go unpunished". On the other hand, yes, I still do some, as "few" does not equate to "all".   Life's a delicate balance between lots of opposing principles, and avoiding being a sucker yet remaining humane is just one of them.   Sounds like you may have come close to a Bad Thing happening, so I'm quite glad that balance swung to your side in the matter!   - OS

  14. I use dogs as an alarm system. There's a large dog that sleeps on my front porch at night, another on the back porch, one that stays outside on the front lawn, three that patrol the back yard, one down at the barn, and a little dog that sleeps with each family member in their bed. If someone tries to mess around here, I WILL hear them. ;)

  15. Something I purchased a couple of years ago came with a free 1 year subscription to RS.  Having never really read the magazine I was wrongfully thinking that it was a music publication not a rag piece for the Liberal agenda.  I was happy to see my subscription end until I started getting the "This is your last issue"  issue every month.  My subscription ended over a year ago but  I still get that trash delivered to my house weekly.  Needless to say, it goes straight in the trash.  I could call them and try to get it stopped but it gives me a little satisfaction knowing that it cost them to pint and mail it to me every week just so I can trash it.

I thought it was funny so I found it online and am posting it, here. I did not create this 'poster' (although I wish I had) and do not know who did.

  17. Stopped in tonight as my wife and son are visiting my mother inlaw. Low and behold the was a plaque on display from the Nra thanking them for their support. Seemed like a really nice place food was good a little spendy but I would rather support a chain that is not anti Gun.

  18. I'm getting excited about the season, too! With the way time has been flying by, it'll be here in no time. $13 was a good price for the Thermacell. I was a little skeptical about deer smelling it too, but their behavior seems the same whether I'm using it or not.

  19. What the hell good are we if we can not help each other out from time to time. That said, my good will has been abused, I will not abuse some others.   Last month I gave a man some money for gas, he was on the side of the road out of gas, he did promise to send the money back, not seen it yet.   Give more than you get, you will get more than you need. This is true for the good and bad you do in life.   TMF, it all works out in the end.

  20. Either the gougers are growing tired or the planets were just all lined up right. I walked into Academy Sports in Mt Juliet the other day at around 11:00am to pick up some barbecue stuff. When I checked out at the register, I was surprized to see a stack of 50 count .22s sitting on the shelf.   "OMIGOD!" I exclaimed to the register girl who kind of looked at me funny. "Is there a limit on those?"   "Two."   I bought the two, CCI std velocity for $3.49 ea.   I did a quick count and there were more than 20 boxes still on the shelf when I walked out, no one around. I scanned the sky in the parking lot to make sure we hadn't been nuked and I missed the big SHTF or something. Didn't see any zombies either, so I drove my happy little self home ... 100 rounds richer :pleased:

  21. Lots of strikes tonight.  Then they cut to a memorial service in Australia.  Both Rueters and the Telegraph feeds showing the same thing.   Anyway, did anyone see/hear that strike that came in within two blocks of the camera position on the Telegraph feed?  Wow, heard it coming, then BOOM.  Got to give it to the camera guy, he just panned over and got the shot.

  28. As a Vet that's a good idea but perhaps an even better idea is to write you your  Senators and Congressmen and tell them to quit spending  money on foreign concerns and put those billions of dollars toward aiding the Vets who gave everything for their Country. Tell them if they don't want to discuss these problems then expect to get votes elsewhere.

  30. As a whitewater kayaker, I love it when it rains long and hard in the summer. It brings up the creeks and rivers. Although, I'm not sure this event is going to be quite enough. Probably will be great river levels on Monday, when I have to be at work.   Here's a song that is my kayaking mantra. Maybe it will pick up your spirits:   http://youtu.be/esEdC0c3YI4

  32. We had a very nicely dressed guy demand to come in our house the day after Christmas, no doubt casing the house for a later robbery. We turned them away then several months later they came back while I was overseas. When they came he, not dressed as nicely, and a few other guys were in an old beat up van. He came onto our porch and my wife met him with the muzzle of an AR. He high tailed it out of the area pretty quickly and we have not seen him since.   So how someone is dressed has no bearing on how I treat someone because I treat everyone I do not know as if they are up to no good.

  41. I generally do. Rarely do I see any 22 priced even remotely normal so it doesn't happen very often. And reasonably priced 22 get snatched up before it gets pulled down but I do my part to keep it our of the hands of those who are buying to resell.
    1 point
  42. Stay on top of Armslist in the area and flag every single ad for 22lr. I do it every single day. Eventually these gougers will not be able to sell their ammo at elevated prices putting them in a bind when the credit card bill comes in. I even flag normal priced 22 so the gougers cannot buy it to resell.

  44. Bringing this one back to life to keep the thought going.    Guys, think about the shops in your area.  Think about those purchases you have made or not, based on a smoking internet deal.  I've bought there as well.  But I'm changing.   Think out into a not to distant future.  Politicians know they really can't push a gun ban or confiscation nationwide.  We've all heard and discussed the methods they would use to ban guns, all they have to do is: Limit ammo sales in the correct way (finding .22 easy?) Expand other laws that can prevent you from owning or buying (had a doctor ask if you own guns?  know anyone with a frivolously applied order of protection?) Heck, ban or limit primers......nothing else works then   But what if it were this easy....just don't put an internet tax on anything for a little longer.  The local guys are hurting!  Or worse, gone already!  When all the local guys are gone.....who is going to do that transfer?  Bud's and the other big internet dealers are gone shortly after that.  Who is going to do that transfer you saved a smoking 20 bucks on?  Think about it.  Buy local!  When you do a transfer, buy something from that FFL while your there.  These guys want to make a living and serve you.  When you walk in and pick up your 3 Aim or two Bud's deals and then happily avoid the sales tax and then buy NOTHING else, you are helping create and perpetuate the scenario above.   This is a forum for gun owners.  Are we helping our own cause with our purchase methods?

  46. That would currently be D&T.  I used to part time there and went by there last Friday to pick up a new Vortex Sparc.  I have also shopped with G&L, Larry's Pawn in Portland, Antlers and Fins in Lafayette.  Do you mind if I ask why it matters?    Will I drive to Rivergate to buy a bottle of Hoppes, nope.  But will I stop buy and get the sleeve of targets, couple of boxes of ammo and a sight, like I did last week, HELL YES.
    1 point
  47. Who's going to do that transfer when they are gone?  Spend the extra dollar, buy your ammo, work with them on your firearms purchases.  They want to be there and we want them there.   Carry on
