I would suggest that if your friend wants to keep any type of decent relationship with his neighbors that you don't hunt deer in a subdivision. There are easy ways to deter deer from eating his flowers. an acre is very little area, bow or not. My advice, stick to the woods if you want to deer hunt. I go back to, just because you CAN do something doesn't mean you should. This is a very bad idea in my opinion. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk3 points

I've worked for the .gov for about 20 years (military and local LE). What drives me crazy is "We're equal opportunity!" But then, there's a block on a job application about race. Why? If you're an EOE, and want to hire the best person for the job, why do you give a damn about what color they are? Race questions on job apps should be removed if you're really wanting equal opportunity.3 points

I've been on the lookout for an older Remy 700 30.06 ADL or BDL for a couple of years. Recently found this BDL vintage 1996. It's in excellent condition and came with a Leupold 4.5x15 VX scope.2 points

Over the years the African Americans have been known by many different Classes or Nationalities of people depending on who you ask. i am not trying to start an issue he so please don't take offense by my questions. When I was a very young man growing up in West Chicago and having a lot of African American friends they were kind of offended if they were called Negro and they became wanting to be called Black so as time passed they were called Blacks And then as time passed by and the Civil Rights movement came and the Desegregation and Discrimination laws were signed into effect by the President they took a new role as African Americans. Now here is where I get a little confused. If a person is born in America they are an American plain and simple (well should be anyway). I have friends that are of Irish descent that were born here but they are not Irish Americans. They are Americans. I have friends that were born here that are of German descent and they are not German Americans. They are Americans. I have friends that are of many different nationalities from generations past that have been born here and they are all Americans. I also have some African American friends that were born here and raised here but for some reason unbeknownst to me for some reason cannot just be Americans but must be African Americans. Now with that said I do have one friend that is a true African American. He was born in Nigeria and is of Nigerian descent and came here as a child at 8 years old and became a legalized American Citizen at the age of 17. He and I were having lunch one day and he was talking about his and I asked him which he preferred to be known as and his reply was I am an American. I was an African and now I am an American were his words. So now Since that lunch I have always wondered why Africa Americans that have been born here and raised here and educated here don't want to be called Americans but would rather be called African Americans. I ask my friend from Nigeria and he had no answer for the question. He just said he was very proud to be an American............Just seeking input and thought on this issue............................... :ugh: :ugh:2 points

Congrats, I did it 42 days ago and it is nice. I tell folks I have 6 Saturdays and 1 Sunday every week. No more M-F. I was going to hold out until January, but it wasn't any fun anymore and a fellow told me years ago that was when it was time to hang it up. I don't even think about the crap that used to be on my mind in the middle of the night or when I was hunting or fishing. I had some people tell me prior to retiring that it wasn't what is was cut out to be. Well I say BS!! I know that I have to stay busy, but heck I got 2-3 years worth of honey do's to do, espescially when I keep putting them off. LOL Sorry to jack your thread Randall2 points

It takes awhile but you'll adjust and love it. I retired in 2010 and at first, kept thinking I had to use vacation time to do any trips...lol. But 4 years+ into it, I realize that life without a schedule is paradise! I'm so busy now doing anything and everything, I sometimes wonder how the heck I ever had time to work. The best part is fishing during the weekdays ... nobody there except an occassional fellow retiree :pleased:2 points

Haha, they are fun to watch. I went to a different part of the woods today than where I saw that one Saturday. I'm curious to see if he will still be there next time I go to that spot.1 point

I think one of the best things the TN Legislature has done in recent years is to allow HCP holders to carry a sidearm all year even while bowhunting. I like having my carry piece in the woods while hunting, camping and hiking. What I carry depends on the hunting season and if I want it concealed. I have leaned heavily towards revolvers for this purpose, but lately I have been jonesing for a Glock20 :) Here is what I carry now (until I get the G20) #1) S&W 3" Model 13-3 in .357mag. This is my primary "woods gun" at the moment. I can conceal it and it shoots well. The problem is I don't want to mess this gun up, so it's not ideal for this purpose. It carries great during bow season or while hiking though. #2) Ruger Super Blackhawk 4-5/8" bbl in 44mag. I'll carry this if weight/concealability is not an issue and I want a backup to my rifle if deer gun season is open. I also prefer this if I'm camping or bowhunting in bear country. #3) Next, as I mentioned, will be a G20. Since I've started shooting 3gun, I've realized just how important capacity is, lol. If I lived in griz country, I'd consider a G21 with a 460 Rowland conversion, but a 10mm should be more than sufficient in TN woods.1 point

Yes, it is the "Survival and Preparedness" forum. So far, I've managed to survive and am fairly prepared for most likely scenarios which would cause problems. I've found that the location of one's home is of more importance than it being built like a military fort. I've yet to suffer a "drive by shooting", but have dealt with floods, tornadoes, and ice storms. Sickness or job loss are two of a myriad of likely possibilities one will have to face. Total societal breakdown makes for entertaining conversation on an internet forum, but honestly, it isn't likely to be the thing you'll need to be prepared for.1 point

I went out this afternoon, and slipped as quietly as I could to one of my stands that still needed some serious maintenance. I ended up just improving that site and getting it ready for the rest of the season. I saw a few squirrels and found a turkey feather. I also sweated way too much and lost my Scott release to my bow :( It's fun just getting out in the woods. I'm bummed about losing the release though.1 point

I saw 4 does this morning at 6:30, but the closest they got was 50 yards. That is 7 in 2 mornings and all in the same spot crossing the ridge. Next weekend I am carrying my climber and moving about 20 yards down the ridge. This way I will be able to cover all of the trails in use, not just 2... I killed 2 from this ladder stand last year during rifle season and it is not a terrible location but my FIL placed it, and it is a terrible spot for a stand IMO. Picture 2 trees, one 2 feet behind and 1 foot left of the other. The stand is attached to the 2nd tree, so the first tree blocks basically anything from 1:00 to 4:00, and makes swinging a crossbow or rifle around for other shots to the right very difficult. And he placed the ladder on the uphill side so the platform slants down to the back causing leg strain when you stand. I told him I wanted to move the stand this spring but he didn't agree. And since it is not my land or even my stand I left it but next spring it is going to move.1 point

I have seen and heard nothing about the city council enacting the state law that they are now required to do to ban carry in parks. I honestly think they have no clue, but that pretty typical for the city council and city government in general here.1 point

Thanks for the compliments guys. I go back and forth between wanting extremely clean ground blades and leaving them as forged. To me the performance means more than looks. This is a very large chunk of properly heat treated high carbon steel. It should be more than capable of any large chopping or cutting chores or abuse. Its intimidating in its sheer size, but the smaller one thats my edc is far more dangerous because its quicker unless your just a brute of a man. I like the heft and power of the blade, but its gotta be 3.5 lbs at least. Heres a little different size perspective. I'm 6'1 for reference1 point

On the whole, I agree with that, but small venues like the Ryman, and TPAC still offer a good experience for music. Not saying it's perfect, but beats the 50000 screams of my youth.1 point

I hear people say all the time that police officers do not shoot much and are terrible shots. When I went through the Academy we shot about 1k rounds each during firearms week and then I shot about another 1k during my first in service. The agency I am with now requires about 200 rounds a quarter, but gives you more if you wish. I have yet to be beside an officer at any of these that failed to score at least 85%. I am going I say that the level of marksmanship I see is far better than what I saw in the Army. I think the officer in OK did just fine; he hit the assailant and did not shoot any bystanders. A new trend that I do not believe in is telling officers to not shoot anymore than is necessary. This is because of the backlash from possibly good shoots that left public scrutiny of assailants being shot more than 3 times. Example: Ferguson, MO.1 point

Do y'all have any idea how long it took me until I could tell the difference between a squirrel and a deer?! Years! Much ado about nothing is my take on this whole mess and I've been reading this drivel since the late 1960's. In the end it comes down to training, common sense and street smarts because if you can't hit it than what difference does the round make?1 point

I think that was placed on applications right after the Discrimination and Desegregation laws were signed because in the laws it required companies to hire and employed certain amount of Minorities so if they were working on getting that balance in their company and they needed to hire a few more minorities it would help the employers get their quotas met. I think theta should have been removed from the applications within a couple years and some companies don't have them on them and some do. Thing is about 80% of all big companies now do all their hiring through Temporary Employment agencies and weed out the ones they want to keep and get rid of the ones they don't based on work performance and can release an employee without fear of suit..............jmho1 point

Back many many years ago my father had a small open top low side trailer a riding mower may not have even fit on and they made him buy the semi tag after he got stopped by a state trooper and received ticket for no tag on a Semi trailer so go figure that one out. Back then the tags were based on size of trailer. When my Father went to get the tags they ask him for the title and he said, I don't have one and the court clerk said, how do you prove ownership and my father said with this bill of sale. Now this is were it gets really good. My father bought this little trailer in Illinois for some small stuff he wanted to pack in it when were moved south. The clerk said you didn't pay any tax and my father said I bought it from an individual and the guy said does not matter, you have to pay sales tax. My father said ok, who do I pay it to since I bought it in Illinois and I now live in Tennessee. The guy said I will be right back. He comes back and says you pay us and we forward it back to the state of Illinois. Ok My father was a very patient man all his life and I never saw him get mad about anything and he was not even getting mad about this but as it went on he was starting to smile. Now because the guy was a friend of my fathers that sold him the trailer he only pay 35 bucks for it and that was what it said on the receipt. So now the guy looks at my father and asks what the size of the trailer is and my father says well lets see, it says here on the receipt that is it 5 X 8 open top trailer. The guy is in this huge book looking up semi trailer sizes and he says it cannot be that size because our book does not show a semi trailer that small. My father said well the Tennessee State Trooper that wrote me this ticket I am sure will argue that fact with you. Pretty soon another man joined in on trying to figure it out and this was the actual County Court Clerk. After another 20 or so minutes the Clerk was about to tell my father to take it to the judge when my Grandfather walked into the clerks office and up beside my father and said He son, whats taking so long and the clerks all raised their heads when they heard my grandfathers voice. The actual clerk asks "Bubba Lee ( my Grandfathers nick name) do you know this gentleman?" and my grandfather said "yep, greatest son in law a man can have and this one is married to my only daughter." Well we need to take care of this issue right now. One of the other clerks ask for my fathers ticket from the Trooper and my father gave it to him. He left the office and went across to the judges chambers and came back with a case dismissed stamp on the ticket and signed by the judge. They handed my father a Semi Tag and a registration for the trailer and we were able to leave with the problem fixed. That little trailer sat in back of the barn for about 30 years until it was nothing but a pile of rust and never moved again. I still visit the old family ranch even though we have not owned it in many years because my son is buried in our family cemetery up there and I always look behind the old barn the road goes past and think about that old trailer and my father and Grandfather. My grand father was known by everyone in Cheatham County and the main county road that that runs through the Ranch now bares his name. "Lee Greer Road"1 point

It is worth book value - no more. If it has museum/history value, then so be it. Its "history" certainly doesn't raise its value to me.1 point

Situational awareness is still the best survival tool anybody can have. If you think you need to fortify your home with ballistic level protection, moving to a more civilized location would more than likely be cheaper than making the needed fortifications to the entire house. I suppose you could pile sandbags, if you had the time, energy and didn't mind living in a Vietnam movie. Knowing how your neighbors would respond in a crisis, and knowing how where the likely hot spots are (i.e.: places likely to be looted, areas where violence will spring up from, ect) are your best bets to let you gauge how much time you have to decide to either bug out, or man battle stations inside your home.1 point

Well, I see a couple of people have thought about this. However, some of you really need to read up on your Testosterone supplements and attempt to cut back on your doses. Abnormal aggression to a fairly simple question on a forum is one side effect. I guess I should have posted this in the Survival and Preparedness section….Oh wait…I DID…! LOL. I will respond though by saying I didn’t tell, nor do I give a hoot how anyone spends their retirement accounts or college funds and civil unrest in no way compares to a freak’n army invasion nor the need for anti-artillery or missile bunkers, castles, nor shark infested moats…I might like to have an armor plated Winnebago though. I’m retiring in 2 weeks and that thing could be good on the freeway! But those comments did crack me up so thanks!! I WAS mostly thinking civil unrest as in drive by spraying of houses, and possibly attacks spreading into suburb type neighborhoods by gangs however. No doubt this could happen if things got really bad in the streets like in the other post I read. From the news, there’s no shortage of guns and ammo in the hood and drive by shootings do occur pretty frequently now in some areas of the hood, but could spread to other areas if, say for instance, the welfare checks quit coming? Or the Obama phones crap out? Anyway, Dolomite hit on a good idea though and thanks for the constructive comment. I have a small 9ft. room that faces the street that would allow covering the front door and has only one small window. It’s in the center of the house that would easily cover the front door and both sides of the house. Heck I could even give the Papa Johns Pizza guy cover while he delivered pizza to the window of my fortified room!! Maybe a steel plate backed by solid 2†rough lumber 4 or 5 ft tall on the side facing the street might do the trick. Guess I’ll just check into it and see what’s out there. Yall be safe and keep your powder dry.1 point
