  1. I'm going to take a different tact... DON'T BECOME COMPLACENT! With a 2A-friendly President incoming and a GOP-controlled House and Senate, now is the time to keep pushing for gains in favor of the Second Amendment. Push hard for the changes in legislation that we want to see! The fight isn't over. The fight is never over. Reagan wasn't as strong of a 2A ally as folks think, but he was a smart man and he wisely observed that freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.

  4. Scarcity and perceived scarcity are well studied when it comes to consumer behavior. Gun owners have been operating under this paradigm of thinking things are going to be less available in the future for at least the last four years. Then, you have the fact that we have a ton of new gun owners in the market, and a lot of them have stockpiled more ammo then they will reasonably shoot in several years. Some may have sacrificed on other things to buy now perceiving that they may not be able to get it later. There is a bubble in the gun store space right now. This is evidenced by the fact that there are so many stores out there that are nothing other than capital arbitrage opportunities. That is, you've got an owner that knows nothing and cares nothing about firearms - rather they've got some money they need to put somewhere, and see gun owners as an easy way to move some product and make some good money. Think about the stores you've been in where customer service is the furthest thing from their mind. You've got money to spend, but often leave without doing so because you have trouble even getting noticed. This is a store that is nothing other than in arbitrage play. We've got several of them here in middle Tennessee. I expect we're about to go into a dark period for gun stores. Access to capital it's still really tight for small businesses. And, now gun stores are going to need to do something other than just show up and open their doors and expect people to trip over each other to buy stuff. I expect the show the weekend after Thanksgiving over in Knoxville will show this as well. That's usually a pretty well attended show, and it wouldn't surprise me to see traffic down. All of this is to say, that if you've got a local gun shop that you really appreciate, find a way to go in and support them. They're going to need it.

  6. Nice! I like the look of the straight dust cover models. Sadly, I'm down to six Berettas now. (The Beretta Cougars are my favorite series though) Don't let the number of parts hold you back. These are extremely easy to work on & modify & will digest any ammo you feed them. They're tough as nails too. Odds are you'll never have to repair yours, but if you ever do, parts are cheap & easy to find.

  10. I've been wanting to pick up guitar for a while now, and finally made the leap. We had a fundraiser auction at work today and a new Fender American Standard Stratocaster (made in USA, not Mexico) was in the mix. It's a 60th Anniversary model in Mystic Aztec Gold with Fender Custom Shop Fat '50s on all 3 pickups (whatever that means). I think it looks super retro-cool. I managed to snag it for less than $400, which I think was a phenomenal price, especially compared to what I see them listed for online. It's this one: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Fender/Limited-Edition-American-Standard-Stratocaster-Electric-Guitar-Mystic-Aztec-Gold-Maple-Fingerboard-1409670722552.gc So I have the axe, hard case, strap, and cable. I need a beginner amp. Nothing too crazy loud. Probably 10-15w would do it for my purposes. No particular budget in mind. I see plenty in the $50-$100 range which would be just fine. I don't mind going a bit higher if it means I get a lot more, but I'm not looking for pro-grade gear here. Any suggestions? I'm finding plenty of YouTube videos to get me started playing, so I'll start there, and maybe check out the Yousician app. I've already discovered the free guitar tuning apps for smartphone and tablets, so that saves me a few bucks on not needing to buy a tuner. Any other beginner advice?

  12. I own two of these little LED flashlights that I paid $29 for and they are awesome. At $19, it's a great buy. They are very bright, 7 mode programmable memory, and come in three light colors: yellowish, neutral, and cool white. It's a floody, wide beam with a center hot spot. I just ignore lumen ratings, since they can be all over the place, but it's close to being as bright as a single car headlight on low beam. Indoors pointed at the ceiling, it's about the same brightness as a 75w lightbulb. The thing I really like is that it has a firefly mode, which is about as bright as a single match. BLF stands for Budget Light Forum, an online forum on flashlights. It was set up initially as a group buy a couple years ago, but the light has been very popular. build quality is very good. You can find the programming instructions over at Budget Light Forum. Trust me, you'll never figure it out on your own. They use 18650 rechargeable batteries, but you can also use 2 CR123 batteries. If you have an old broken laptop, you can rip open the battery pack and find 6 18650 batteries. In my experience, 4 of the 6 batteries are still good even if it is many years old. http://www.banggood.com/BLF-A6-XPL-1600LM-7-4modes-EDC-LED-Flashlight-p-991823.html?rmmds=search Don't accept the default setting of standard shipping or it will take a month to get here. Use the drop down menu to select priority direct mail for $1.17. It should arrive in about two weeks.

  20. All I got to say is now is the time to buy and stock up because if Trump loses 4 years from now, sure enough the next Democrat president residing over a Democrat majority congress will ban everything Obama and Clinton wanted, and probably more. So relax, buy in celebration, but don't wait until the next round of panic buying after a ban threat where prices have shot up 2x to 3x over MSRP. I'm going to keep hoarding mags, guns and ammo every chance I get. I don't want to be caught behind another assault weapons ban like the Bill Clinton era ban.

  21. This article came across Hacker News this afternoon and I found it fascinating. If, like me you remember from science and history that the church prosecuted Galileo as a heretic for his heliocentric view of the solar system, then it's quite interesting that the church had been tracking the sun in detail before that time. http://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/catholics-built-secret-astronomical-features-into-churches-to-help-save-souls I'd love to check some of these Meridian lines out.

  22. Can only point you to current permit holder data from TNDOS: https://www.tn.gov/assets/entities/safety/attachments/Current_HG_PermitHolders.pdf So it's simple to know that initial outlay from all current holders was $116,208,600. Beyond that would take some figuring and guesstimating, plus this doesn't take into account whatever % at some point did not renew their permits or the small % that had them pulled. There's data back to 2008 there too: https://www.tn.gov/safety/article/handgun But you'd sorta have to guesstimate a renewal percentage x renewal fee per year and stuff like that. Also, of course, you'd have to know true admin costs, fingerprinting contract, and whatnot to know just how much wound up as "profit" in the state coffers. There are ATF statistics about 4473s per state per year too. 2015 there were about 650,000 in TN, so that's $6.5 million right there. https://www.fbi.gov/file-repository/nics_firearm_checks_-_month_year_by_state.pdf/view - OS

  23. <caveat - written under effects of post-operation anesthesia> I pondered this also, and largely agree. In the absence of crisis, "normalcy" returns for a while (re firearms demand). That said... it *may* very well be the case that "crisis" has simply switched political paradigm, and now the libtards really ramp up on gunthink (with requisite head-sploding of course) - due to their perceived threat of POTG/conservatives...and President-Elect Trump. SO, with luck the 2A wins out with further converts, solidifying the overall 2A state-of-health. AND all that crap above said ... What I think really happens is we (POTG/TGO) get is a 2-year or 4-year relative reprieve on price-jacking & demand - thus - smart $ continues to be "buy low, sell high", and "don't get on the box-car". <Don't beat me up too bad, Mac>

  25. I am a fan of Fender Mustang amps. I think I got mine for $50 used. Being a modeling amp it can allow you to try a lot of different sounds all in one package. It is a lot of fun, but it can be intense to play with if you don't like tweaking things. I don't play. I make noise. I am self taught. I like Corey Hunter on YouTube. He makes it look easy and easy to understand. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using Tapatalk

  32. Wow. For $400 you stole it. I built a guitar using one of those in a different color as a base and paid more for just the body and hardware. The Aztec gold is one of my favorite finishes too. The 'fat 50's pickups' are a nice little upgrade from the norm IMO, that means they are made to sound like vintage spec pickups from the late 50's. Honestly it's mostly marketing hype IMO, but there are better pickups than others out there and yours are very good, they are the main reason I went with the body I bought. I would second the notion of getting the guitar checked out and setup. It's not rocket science to do it yourself, but especially on a strat with a tremolo, there are a lot of little factors involved in achieving a good setup. I would at least recommend a copy of any of Dan Erlewines books so you can learn how all the parts relate to each other and talk turkey with your tech a little easier. I also second the little roland amps, they are great. I used to have a little roland of my own and while I have 'nicer' stuff now, it was really great to grab and throw in a trunk and bang around town. Most important of all is to have fun and hang in there. EVERYONE has a hard time in the beginning, and the beginning lasts years. It's a life long learning process that is a total blast.

  33. Take your guitar to Dave Johnson at Carter Vintage in Nashville. He's an excellent luthier and worked at Gruhn for years as well. He does all my set up work. An excellent practice amp for the money are the Roland Cube amps. Excellent amps.

  34. Ummm, yeah... "steal" is a bit of an understatement on what what you paid for this guitar. Congrats on your venture into legal thievery! Because I have played both acoustic and electric guitar at the semi-pro level (gig & get paid regularly, but not my primary occupation) for about 25 years now, and also because most of my friends believe that I own more guitars than I could ever possibly play (substantially more than 25, but slightly less than 50), I can offer a few suggestions. My number one suggestion would be to get the guitar "set-up" by a luthier or tech who knows what they're doing. By that, I mean don't just take it to Guitar Center for a setup. The reason I recommend this is that no two guitars are exactly the same, and they all involve a fine balance of interactive adjustments to play as best as possible. A setup involves much more than just slapping on new strings. Setting up a guitar is akin to sighting in a new rifle-- there are measurements and tweaks, rinse and repeat until it's where you want it. A good tech will ask you a series of questions, like what kind (genre) of music do you intend to play, what style you plan to use (fingers vs. pick, slide, etc). He may also ask you to play a bit, so that he can take note of your playing technique. Of course, if you know nothing at all, this may be difficult, so it may be best to just ask for "factory-recommended" setup specs to start with. While factory recommendations vary widely from company to company, they will generally put the instrument within a reasonably comfortable playing "feel". Keep in mind that a quality setup will cost you anywhere from $50-100, including a new set of strings. But much like paying to have a gunsmith professionally "slick" your action, the long-term reward is worth the initial cost. Why spend this kind of money if you can't even play a note yet? Simple. Too many beginners attempt to learn on a guitar that isn't properly set-up, As a result, strings are often too high, action and response is terrible, the guitar won't stay in tune, etc. The end result is often that the beginner gets frustrated, and thinks that they will never learn... whereas a properly set-up instrument facilitates good playing habits and makes learning much easier. Some folks like myself take enough of an interest to learn to do their own setups, but if you don't have a clue, it's best to leave it to someone who understands the physics of a guitar. Regarding beginner amps, while I am a huge proponent of tube amps in terms of superior tone, for the beginner they can be tricky, sometimes unreliable, and somewhat costly to maintain. Therefore, for learning and "bedroom playing" purposes, I would recommend shopping for a decent SS (solid state) amp-- SS amp technology has made tremendous leaps and bounds over the last 10 years, and the stigma formerly attached to them has largely been eliminated. Again, the type and brand of amp that you choose may be dictated by the style of music you intend to pursue.. If you are a metal kind of guy, there are tons of amps out there which are voiced specifically for this type of music. If you are a British Invasion person, there are amps that are more specialized for that type of tone.... Country, classic rock, etc same thing. There is no one "do it all" amp, but there are some amps with "modeling" features which come close, at least at bedroom volume levels. My recommendation would be to take your guitar to a shop (I'd start with Corner Music), and play it through as many different types and brands as possible. If you don't know how to play at all, there are always people at the shop (employees or other customers) who will be more than happy to demo an amp for you using your guitar. This should give you a good idea of the sound you might be chasing in your mind. And don't let a salesperson pressure you toward this amp or that amp... you will find that regardless of whether it is guitars, amps, cars or guns ("what the li'l lady needs is a sturdy pink revolver") there is always someone willing to tell YOU what YOU need... based on their own preferences, of course. If you've made it this far, I hope that I've been somewhat helpful. I'll do my best to answer any other questions you might have.

  39. They could initially, but it wouldn't last. This is simple industry economics. Right now there is a balance with supply and demand. If they take them off the NFA list, there will be a very short period (probably a year) where the supply will not meet the demand. Some short sighted companies will spike the prices as the demand curve shifts up. However, there is a very low barrier of entry into the market and other companies that do similar work will realize that the product is relatively cheap to create and since there is not room for much innovation in the future it would not be hard for a company to recreate the product. Once those low barriers of entry allow more competition, the supply line slides down and eventually makes for a more competitive industry, requiring manufacturers to either make a better product, make them cheaper for the consumer, or both. And those companies that spike the prices will lose customer loyalty due to the fact they temporarily screwed their customers (ex. Cheaper Than Dirt did this with AR mags and 22lr rounds during panic, and lost a lot of revenue in the long run.) I think we will absolutely see more companies taking this on, more quality products at better pricing, better customer service, better mounts, etc.in order for the companies to survive in the industry. And nobody will be paying Advanced Armament $75 for a piston or $150 for a BRAKEOUT comp.

  46. I know this might get my 'nerd card' yanked but I still haven't seen Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. I know everyone said that Ben Affleck was really good as Batman - in fact, some have said that he was, surprisingly, the best thing about the movie. I don't hate him as an actor but after what he did to Daredevil it is just hard for me to want to see him as such an iconic character. Anyhow, this isn't about Ben Affleck and it does have a reason to be in the Walking Dead thread. I had not realized - until a friend alerted me this morning - that Lauren Cohan and Jeffery Dean Morgan played Bruce Wayne's parents in that movie. In other words, with Glenn out of the way Maggie and Negan hooked up and raised Batman.

  48. My parents, brother in law and a family friend just built this for our family property. They put a good bit of time into it and I am extremely impressed. I can't wait to start spending some time in it. My brother and myself both have Becker Muscular Dystrophy, getting out in the woods is a little bit more difficult for us, but they are sure trying to help us out, can't them enough. For them to build this for us, we were both floored, its 8x10, has some good sized windows (still working on the actual windows), a little desk at each window and the ramp for us to get our butts in it. We hadn't used it just yet, but I am sure it will be put to good use in the coming months, get us a little heater in there, we'll be good to go! Hoping it will last a good while, I had to show it off. Also, we have had a few trespassers as of late unfortunately, one of them dropped a couple prescription bottles and the paperwork that came with them that had her address and phone number. If you know anyone named Delisha from the Moscow area, I am sure she's an outstanding citizen, but tell her we have her muscle relaxers, birth control paraphernalia and empty beer cans.
