  1. Well once again I got to meet and spend some time with aTGO member and once again it was a great experience to meet MacGyver and put a face with a name and had a very enjoyable visit. I took him up and introduced him to Steelharp at Sumner Gun and Supply and he also was glad to meet MacGyver so it was a double hitter for sure. Great guy and enjoyed the visit for sure.......................

  2. Permit me to offer a third possibility for reduced traffic, Mac. With the last several incarnations of the format, I find the site less and less user friendly. Yes, I'm old and don't have the background in computers/IT/ and other high tech things that most people here seem to have. The days of my spending hours here have been gone for quite some time now. Yes, I'm also job challenged and have a lot of time I should put to better use. But to me at any rate, I see the number of former heavy-duty users dwindling. Seems stat many of the staple names have almost disappeared from the posts. I do see a bunch of new names, very many of which seem to be sellers who have discovered the site; and they do not usually represent the kind who will stick around. They come for the fast sale and that's all. And quite frankly, after contacting several of them, I'd just as soon they not return. Ok, this is not well written, and I'm probably going to offend some by it. But just my little opinion.

  3. While I'm encouraged by the activity over the last week, I'm afraid substantial damage has been done over the last year. Put as bluntly as I can do it, blind partisan rhetoric ran a huge number of people off. I know I've said it a million times, but guns are an American thing - not simply a Republican thing. A few handfuls of voices so poisoned the air here that a lot of our members simply left. They didn't protest. They didn't whine in PM's or in threads. They just logged out. Heck, I'm the admin who likes to talk about big topics and there have been plenty of days lately where I've just not wanted to engage with some of these folks. I love a good debate - but there wasn't really any debate in that politics subforum. So we were faced with a choice - to continue to let this slowly choke out any community here - or to find some other path. We chose the latter. I'm not sure what the future will hold. I know that I can speak for David when I say that we really appreciate the core community here. The switch from vBulletin to IPB hasn't been the smoothest. I know David continues to try to tweak both the configuration of the board as well as working with the vendor. But, I think traffic is down for two reasons (especially on high end stuff like your optic.) One, Hillary isn't coming to get your guns. People have spent money they didn't have over the last 6 years - and now we're in a down period. But, two we've run a bunch of eyeballs off. It's going to take some time to build that back. I appreciate you guys in the meantime.

  4. There's certainly merit to this posit. I certainly agree with your opinion about the return of people just here to make a quick sale. I know that I do not entertain the idea of purchasing anything from people with just a few posts. It's not that I feel there's anything wrong with them personally, but when it comes to purchasing a firearm I am not comfortable with buying from a stranger unless said stranger is in an established gun shop. It's just the way I roll.

  5. This is cool....it's a dagger with a removable handle...remove the handle and screw in any standard threaded mop/broom handle and you've got a solid spear. Regular 24.99 in the bargain bin for 8.99. I got two. Just could not resist myself.

  9. Born in June of 1971 I was just about negative two when Woodstock happened. I have to say, though, this thread made me think of this commercial - especially the first 29 seconds or so. Heck, just the fact that I have been around long enough to remember this commercial probably makes me old :

  24. Well said, Doug. In spite of the earlier comments in other threads; as much as I would prefer the previous, old fashioned, and just plain easy for me format: this forum is still the property of TGO David and I will abide by his decisions. As several had already said, I would not stop visiting, and I might go into fits with other formats; but it's still not my playground. I just play here.

  25. I do want to slowly build up at least a small supply of freeze-dried, mylar pouch meals just because they are so stable, light, easy to store and it would be easy to keep them in a plastic bin or bucket with a lid and toss the bins or buckets in my truck if for some, strange reason I did have to leave my home (aka bug-in location) in a hurry. Honestly, my prepping is more in consideration of a natural disaster or possibly a foreign or domestic terrorist hacker screwing up the grid than in preparation for a government invasion, etc. In the case of a natural disaster if it were to make the area where I live uninhabitable then I would have no choice but to leave, at least for a little while, and having food I could quickly and easily load up to take with me would be good. I already keep a small, plastic tote/bin with some canned soup, emergency meal replacement bars, a few bottles of water, stainless steel bowls I could eat out of or use to boil more water and a Sterno stove with fuel in my truck just in case it takes me a little while to get home. The canned foods would be difficult to carry if had to go on foot. They would be more for a shelter in place situation, a situation where driving home might be very slow going due to temporarily impassable roads or for an initial couple of days when it might be better to stay put before heading out toward home on foot. Abandoning my vehicle would be my last choice but if it were down to staying with the truck and dying or trying to walk home and having a chance of surviving then I'd have to try and hoof it. In that event, the few freeze dried meals I have in there could be easily stashed in my get home bag (also in the truck) to hopefully sustain me until I could reach home and my other supplies.

  26. I was a whooping 7 years old at that time. My father had returned home from his 1st tour of Nam and he was reassigned to Shaw AFB near Sumter, SC. This was my first experience with base housing so I have quite vivid memories of it. At my age then, I was more in awe by the event that happened about a month prior to Woodstock, Apollo 11 and "The Eagle Has Landed". I can remember to this day watching the black and white TV with images of the first moon walk. I was on the folded out hide a bed couch in our living room because I guess my parents knew it was a big deal so my sister and I got to stay up late and watch it. I was constructing a model of the lunar module, you know the punch out pieces of card stock paper, fold on the dotted line and insert tab "A" into slot "B" and you know rest. They were giving them away at the GULF filling station with a fill up of Good Gulf or something like that. As for Woodstock I was too young to even know it was happening at the time. I'm sure I had to have been exposed to something on TV or been around people talking about it but at that time I was clueless. I do remember listening to many of of the artist that were at Woodstock, whether it being the lifeguards playing it on the radio at the base pool or the GI's blaring it from their barracks as mom drove by in our all white 1968 4 door Chevrolet Impala with that gosh awful red vinyl interior. My music preferences were without a doubt influenced by the music of the younger generation and the whole Age of Aquarius movement. My father loved his big band music and Hank Williams Sr., so if he was home or in the car none of that hippie music, as he called it, was going to be played while he was around. The 60's and 70's , I'm glad I got to be a part of that time, there were good and bad things happening then and in the big picture nothing has changed. Good and bad things are happening today but it seams like I could navigate life with much more ease if things now, were more like they were then.

  27. Well, that is the way most deer hunting is. Hard to find land that they wil let you hunt and almost impossible today. Back then when I was a kid my grandfather owned the original Petway Farm which was the first farm settled in the comunity of Petway in Cheatham. The families name was Petway and my grandfather won the place in a card game back in 1932 with hand of small full house. In 1949 he began breeding horses and changed the name from a farm to Petway Ranch and that is when I post something about it I normally will say Ranch/Farm cause he actually raise all kinds of farm animals. There was also another almost 1200 acres of crop land and pasture land and the house my grandfather lived in was the original Yellow Popular Log house that was built in 1851. The Petways actually fought indians out of the upper level of the house and a person can still find great arrow heads and mini balls if you can get permission to used a metal detector and walk around the old house which still stands to this day. My Grandfathers name was Lee Greer and what use to be the driveway to the house is now a road named after him and it goes back into the little community that now exists when my parents sold off the ranch after my Grandfathers death. It was sold with conditions that each lot was to be sold in 20 acre tract and the buyer was only allowed 1 house and 1 out building or small barn. No mobile homes are permitted. My oldest son is buried in the Petway Cemetery s I make regular visits back to the ranch to make sure his grave is being taken care of...............

  31. I think people should just not visit a topic they find offensive rather than try to have it removed. I find it similar to a channel on the TV that I don't like. It's easy to just change the channel and much easier than having the channel removed from the airwaves. I suppose most people do this, but I'm sure the problem with the political topic was the way it filled up the "unread content" and the "all content" activity streams. I understand this would be a real problem and irritation to some. I have a custom activity stream that pulls from everything I really like, which I cunningly named "everything" , and I admit it would fill up sometimes when hot debate was happening in the offending sub title, but when that happened I'd go to the browse button and scan over the topics I enjoy most if I didn't feel like engaging. I did enjoy the political stuff and got caught up in it pretty good. Like others have said, it was usually the first thing I looked at when I logged on. I can live with it either way though. I enjoyed this place a great deal before the said sub topic existed and will continue if it stays gone, or if it comes back. I don't plan on leaving no matter which way it goes. I was surprised it was gone when I got back from vacation. It was the first saved link I have for TGO that I went to and found it gone. I don't know a thing about programming, but if it could exist as a topic that simply did not post to the streams, then the ones that want could go there would have to knowingly enter it by their own choice and debate away without offending others. There would be no room for anyone to complain about it. edited to say......if it existed in the benefactors lounge, prying eyes from the outside world couldn't see it. I don't think......right? Just a thought.

  32. I voted to go back to the old system until a better one can be found. As one who perused the ads, it was a bit of a PITA sometimes getting to the advertisement instead of the discussion post. I am a visual shopper, I see a pic and I click on it to see the ad, but many times it was the discussion thread which then I would have to click on view ad to see the rest of the pics. Is there a way to do away with the discussion thread? Or is there no way to post to the ad thread, which I think is required?

  33. I have noticed a drastic downward trend in views and sales with the new system so for me it isn't working very well. That said I like the format don't care too much for the results. So if you are confident the new system will be remedied shortly I'd say hang in there. If not I'd say drop it and go back with the old system.

  34. I was very excited about going forward to a more in depth classifieds system, but since the majority of users are not embracing it then I don't see it as being worth it. Examples: 1) The "make an offer" function seemed neat. Nobody has ever used it, still sending PM's instead 2) Since a classified ad duplicates as a discussion thread, I had people contacting me weeks after I had marked an ad as sold because they were looking at the discussion thread and never realized it was already sold. End result, a seller has to now mark two separate things (the ad and the discussion thread) as sold 3) The image upload function does not correlate to Tapatalk at all. I suspect it is a permissions issue behind the scenes. Personally, I love Tapatalk because it streamlines all of my forums into one sleek app. 4) Since the new forum software has a certain number of required fields, it makes listing groups of items difficult/impossible and for certain items the selections simply do not make sense. I think most everyone around is so used to the way we were doing things that the old way of doing classifieds would be warmly welcomed. Also, seems like it would be less overall work for you:)

  35. This may seem a bit OT at first, but please do bear with me. I've written and deleted this post at least 5 times in the last month, so screw it, here goes... My own classified ads aren't getting enough eyes on them, new ads don't make their way to my email inbox, and every time I check in (too frequently ) it's practically crickets in the unread content category. Is TGO pulling a Trump? How are you going to shock and disappoint me next? Please tell the primadonna software developer that Craigslist already developed a user friendly classifieds platform, and to just copy it for the love of God ( I realize this is a ridiculous statement). And please bring back something for me to read when I check in. And raise the damn prices if necessary. I'd bet most benefactors subscribe because of your formerly very useful classifieds. This should be a priority. I don't subscribe to many sites. I get almost all my news from TGO, from pbs, and npr almost exclusively- call me eclectic. Please bring back the politics/news/current events content. Kill your darlings, TGO David.

  39. Ah, the much maligned Hi-Point... Can't speak for any other products, but mine is great. 2" groups, 50 yards, iron sights, experienced shooter, not me. Only failures are me, you really need to make sure the mag catch catches. Ran it through a short range carbine class, no issues and I'm a few thousand rounds into it. The mags are the weak point, for trouble shooting, Google the specs for the mag lips.

  41. I have had a few folks ask me about my avatar so I guess I will explain it. That is an actual picture of a female Doberman giving the fireman a kiss because he risked his life to go back into a burning building to rescue her 5 pups that were less than a month old and when he layed them down beside her on a blanket and sat down she came up and thanked him with a kiss and a reporter caught it and shot a picture of it. People said dogs are not to smart but she knew what he did without any doubt in my mind anyway...........

  44. Well there is a complete upgrade to the forum software pending release soon, and the author of the Classifieds is focusing on getting his software updated to match that. I am hoping that once those two things happen, this will sort itself out. It is extremely odd that the following seems to be true: Regular forum emails are going out. I can see evidence of that in the SendGrid dashboard and am receiving them myself. The only thing not sending with any regularity are Classifieds notification emails, but for some reason "Pinned" advertisements do send. The Classifieds uses the email features of the forum software. So it should be working for all or none, but isn't.

  45. I for one, really miss the politics section. It was usually the first forum I visited, followed by General Chat. I know this is a gun forum, but those are my two favorite forums. I think part of that is, because this is a gun forum, most of us are like-minded and share the same interests. I just like hanging out with a bunch of other guys that for the most part, think like I think, and like what I like. Sure, there were some posts that I didn't like, or agree with, but I have thick skin and realize people have differing opinions, and I can respect that, as long as others can respect my opinions too. I actually like the discourse, as it gives me a peek into the way other people might think, and gives me a different perspective on an issue. It probably won't change my belief, but at least I can get an insight as to why someone might think that way. One of the trends happening now all over America is, if someone doesn't like what you have to say, then they shut you down. In a way this feels a bit like that. That forum was a great place to vent. I am a conservative that lives in a world of liberals. My work is filled with them, my main hobby is filled with them, and my family is all liberal, so I generally just keep quiet around them all. For me, the forum was a good outlet. I really like the idea of a politics section not showing up in the new posts feed, but think making it a paid members only section will limit differing points of view.
