2. Just heard today that Pink Floyd will release "Endless River" in October. It's their first studio album since Division Bell 20 years ago. (Dang I feel old). It's supposed to be a continuation of some stuff they were working on during DB, but it's all new stuff. Of course Roger Waters will not be on it.   I wasn't a huge fan of Division Bell, but Floyd is my all-time favorite group. Just the thought of getting some new Pink Floyd material has me all excited. It may suck, but I don't care, it will be Floyd.   To me "The Wall" is a masterpiece that will never be topped. I could listen to that album on a continuous loop. I've listened to it thousands of times and still hear some new nuance in it somewhere.

  8. Just left the theater, haven't been in about 6 years but I needed some motivation, this movie is a fantastic recap of our history with some world history involved. It is a great film that spells out how we got to where we are today. Personally I don't think it went far enough with the fallout of the radical plan that's in play except for the visit to Detroit. I learned a few things and I imagine any younger folks that went to public school will learn a lot.

  18. The M9 isn't as bad as everybody makes it out to be.  I've heard every rumor under the sun as to why the U.S. Army uses it, but at the end of the day, troops aren't assaulting the objective with only a pistol in hand.  Most infantry Soldiers never even get issued one until they become a senior NCO or company commander.  It's main uses are for tankers, MP's, SOF units, and all the field grade staff officers who never leave the FOB (no joke, a pistol has become one of those 'rank has its privileges' item).   As to the which rifle round is best sidebar...a big thing that isn't being discussed is military shooting is different than civilian shooting.  Suppressive fire is used so units can maneuver into place and that means you use a lot of ammo to keep the bad guys heads down while your buddy is exposed and moving.  Loading out 5.56mm rounds means every rifleman can carry more rounds than if they have 7.62mm and the trade off in performance isn't worth the risk of having less ammo on hand, IMO.       Even earlier than 2010.  We saw the first M14's come to our arms room in mid 2005 while I was in 2d BCT at Fort Campbell.  They were in vacuum sealed plastic and still had the wood stock on them.  I was there helping my armorer when we opened them up and it felt like we were curators handling a relic.  Units were issued a great 10x scope that we mounted onto them with a kit and about three months into our Iraq deployment (early 2006 time frame), the first polymer kit came out to give it modern options like adding an IR laser and other trinkets.    It's a great weapon when you have a guy trained how to use it correctly.  The layout of one or two marksmen per squad we had works well, IMO.

  19.
Hey folks, I was reviewing recent TN self-defense cases for my Memphis and Nashville seminars next weekend, and I came across an interesting one from just this past May that I thought those of you in the Volunteer State might find interesting. The case is Jarvis v. State, 2014 Tenn. Crim. App. LEXIS 453 (TN Ct. App. 2014), and it is interesting because it involves a facet of self-defense law that TN shares with only a few other states. All of us are, of course, aware of the fact that we’re responsible for every round that comes out of our PDW. TN is one of the few states that formalizes that responsibility in statute, specifically in 39-11-604, Reckless injury of innocent third person.” That statute provides that: In Jarvis, the defendant was engaged with gunfire by an attacker driving away in a car. The defendant retrieved his own gun from his vehicle, and returned fire. Unfortunately, one of the defendant’s rounds went awry and struck an unlucky fellow by the name of Willard Ross who was working a fireworks sale as the backstop to defendant’s fire. I guess things could have gotten REALLY dramatic, but in any case the fellow who was struck died of his wounds. At trial the defendant was up on a wide variety of charges, and he raised a legal defense of self-defense. Of particular interest here was the murder charge he faced for the death of the poor Mr. Ross. On that particular charge he was found guilty of the murder of Mr. Ross, and sentenced to 25 years. The defendant didn’t fare much better on his other charges, but it’s important to note that this murder conviction was not at all dependent on the others—even had he been fully acquitted of the other charges on the bases of self-defense, his reckless shooting of Mr. Ross would have been denied legal justification under 39-11-604. So, in every state we’re at least theoretically responsible for every round we fire, even in purported self-defense. But TN really puts some teeth in that admonition. I didn’t hyperlink the case here in this post because I’m not sure about the rules for such things on this forum, but anyone who is interested can find a hyperlinked version of this post on my blog, with a link to the full-text of the court decision. Have a safe and happy Fourth of July, everyone, and I look forward to seeing a bunch of you next weekend and Rangemaster, Nashville Armory—or, heck, both! J --Andrew, @LawSelfDefense
Just so everyone is tracking, I recall this shooting. It was a big deal here in Clarksville. Both sides were gangbangers and all involved had a record. They turned a Walmart parking lot into their own personal shooting gallery. The result was a retired teacher being MURDERED. He was murdered because a bunch of drug dealing thugs forgot to keep their business in the ghetto, where they normally shoot at each other. This has nothing to do with self defense. The man who returned fire was illegally in possession of the weapon in the first place and was wildly shooting in a parking lot full of mothers and children at a car that was well out of range. Trying to represent this as an issue for lawful carriers is absolutely ridiculous. I also believe this is a backdoor way to advertise your seminar without having to pay any site fees. 20. Personally I think it should be the same as when people die during the commission of a crime and that is the person who initiated the criminal act should be charged with any injuries or deaths, including fellow criminals. After all, but for the criminal's actions no one would have gotten hurt. A innocent person trying to defend his life should not have to worry about the legal ramifications and should only be worried about coming out the other end of the alercation.

  21. Another thread got me started to thinking about my all time favorite movie, which one and why. Mine is Joe Dirt hands down, no photo finish. I'm not particularly enamored with David Spade, in fact I usually find him to be an annoying after thought that most films could do fine without(excluding his work with Chris Farley, those where great) but for JD he is and was the perfect pick. I think I like the movie so much because it has its funny moments, but mostly I like the overall message of being great in ones own mind, being happy with ones self. Joe is probably the biggest loser around in the eyes of most people he meets, but he finds a friend wherever he goes and his friends recognize his value. I think we've all felt like losers at one point or another, and at one point or another we've all realized that having a triumphant spirit can conquer the biggest obstacles. It's the movie I watch when I want to laugh, and more importantly it's the movie I watch when I need to laugh. I can't help but feel good for Joe at the end, and if your in a crummy mood, it helps to see someone make it at life, despite being born without the top of a skull. The number one lesson I take away from watching the movie every time; Life's a garden, dig it. So TGO, what's your all time favorite movie, and why?

  27. Does it matter if it's brass or steel case?  The Armory has had great prices on a lot of stuff lately.  They have 500 rounds of Wolf 223 for an even quarter a round after shipping ($115 + $10 shipping).  http://www.the-armory.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/product945.html  That's about the lowest I've seen yet for 223 since the panic.  I have no problem with steel case ammo, and that is mostly what I buy and shoot.    You seem to need this quick.  Is it for a class, or do you have some inside dope on an impending zombie outbreak, or what?

  29. Glad to see that in the article that they were talking to a guy like Ernie Langdon.  Heck of a shooter and a great trainer.  We exchanged a couple of emails last month discussing my old Beretta Elite that he built for me back in 2001.    In regard to a newer handgun...., Well it looks to me like we are going down the same path that we did earler.    Early into the latest unpleasantries, I was one of the Army's five combat arms Directors of Training and Doctrine and therefore a part of the selection voting group for the Joint Combat Pistol program. I trust that whatever new effort in this area takes place, they will look hard at the selected handgun that we picked back then, the FN FNP .45acp Tactical.  15+1 in .45 ACP, I still can't figure out how they got that many rounds into such a slim profile grip.    Although it sounds from the interview that Ernie thinks that the .40S&W is the way to go, I would still pick .45 over .40.  In our testing we found it easier to train everyone (male, female - - - I reckon now also GLBT) with the .45 over the .40.  The .40 S&W just seem to have more snap to it than a push in recoil like the .45 ACP.  A lot of folks where surprised that the 'smaller hand" people felt that the .45ACP had a softer recoil.  The biggest upside for the .40 was capacity and the FN guys had matched that with their .45ACP Tactical.    I still don't know why that earlier program crashed and failed.  I do know that the USMC had a hard-on for another 1911 and even with the Army being the DOD proponent for small arms, make no mistake about this - - - the Marines can mount a very effective and successful lobbyist effort on the Hill when they want (or don't want) something.

  30.   If the constitution rocks why are you even disclosing? With no duty to disclose and with TN seeing fit to make legal to carry in car without permit disclosure unless asked is all but a mote point.... I'm all for being polite during an encounter with LEO but I'm not going to disclose any personnel info that I'm not obligated to give unless asked.

  32. What the Army wants is a unicorn pistol.  They want a pistol that hits like a 40mm grenade, but is small and has no recoil, so that the females and officers can shoot it.   They'll spend several years, waste a lot of taxpayers' and manufacturers' money, and stay with the 9mm.  It might not be a Beretta, but it'll be 9mm.   What they NEED to do is to stop listening to whiners and issue an effective caliber/handgun combination.  Something like a 1911, or a SIG 220.

  33. Shop around for knives made differently? I'm a lefty and carry a Benchmade assisted knife in my left back pocket without issue. The Benchmade allowed the belt clip to go on ether side and that made the difference for me. My thumb naturally finds the assist button without issue...

  34. I'm not  left handed but carry my knife on the left. I hold the knife with the button down pinched between my left thumb and index finger. My other three fingers wrap around the handle with the tips of my nails just touching the blade. I press the button with the end of my left index finger and the blade slips past the tips of  the other three. It's easy to operate with ether hand just practice a bit. HTH     Joe W.

  46. I have not been in combat in the military. Does the difference in accuracy between a .223 and a .308 on full auto outweigh the range and the devastation of a .308 in a situation like Afghanistan, where it appears to me most of the fighting is long range shooting? I don’t know I guess like everything else its application dependent. I just think that if I was heading out for combat in a SHTF scenario I’m taking my AR10 not my AR15. (I don’t think that scenario will happen, just sayin’). Do the troops on the ground want something different? If so what do they want? (Other than a gunship)
    1 point
  47. While they are at it they need to get rid of that lame azz .223 also. The .308 is a far superior round to the 223 in making the opponent unable or unwilling to fire his weapon at you. .223 is for punching paper or hunting varmints. I truly think its sad that many of us have better battle rifles than our military that is facing the enemy in battle.

  48. Yeah. One time at Home Depot, I got made by a teenage girl, who went through a series of pantomimes to tell me she could see my gun. After ignoring her for about 5 rounds, I walked off, with my zipper still down. True story.

  49. Remember the key word reckless...  A DA would have to convince a grand jury let alone a jury in court that shooting at a bad guy in the act of committing a mass shooting was reckless.   I seriously doubt you'd get a DA to charge let alone convict in that situation but IANAL :)
