After being stuck in a hospital for a while as an adult, I can only imagine how much it sucks being stuck there as a child, over the holidays, and possibly being underprivileged on top of all the other problems. Every year at Christmas I anonymously donate toys to the nearest children's hospital. This year, thanks to an awesome new store here in Fairview called "Dirt Cheap" I was able to buy over $1500 worth of new toys for $300 out of pocket. It was everything under the tree, except for a couple of wrapped presents in the back. You want something to hit you right in the feels? Try that out next year.

Lots of folks say they set their speed control 5mph over the limit too. Which isn't necessarily a recommendation that you do the same. - OS

Maps are much more useful with a compass.

I bought a Rand McNally laminated book for TN and a few surrounding states I travel in. They cover all but the smallest roads and are easy to mark up and wipe off with a dry erase marker. Those stay in my car, but are easy to grab.

About a month ago I got our boys to go through their toy boxes (yes, plural ) and pick out stuff that was in decent shape that they haven't played with in a while. We ended up with 3 copy paper boxes of toys plus another box of duplo legos. We took them to East TN Children's hospital the week before Christmas. I pulled in behind the Marines unloading their Toys for Tots stash and ended up helping carry a few big boxes. Now that their Christmas haul is cluttering up the house, I quickly determined the initial purge was woefully inadequate. There will be a round 2 before long.

Ran into a friend of mine at the TSC the other day, he has started his own business making whiskey. I stopped by the liquor store on the way home and picked up a bottle of his whiskey. Looking forward to having a sip. Maybe for New Years?

I carry a G19 myself. It's my favorite size for a Glock. They're nothing to write home about, but they work and the aftermarket is huge for them. So finding a holster that you like or other accessories would be easier than the others. That being said, I also own a 75 SP01. Amazing handgun and just feels right in the hand. It's strictly a range gun and not something I ever plan to carry. P07 feels good in the hand and very similar in size to the 19. A guy I work with has one and can't speak any more highly about it. I work part time in gun retail so I get to handle quite a few that are on the market. If you're looking at compact handguns and are interested in CZ's, you may want to hold out a bit for the new P10c. Supposed to have an awesome trigger in it and worth a look. I would also suggest a look at the 320c. I think any of them would fit the bill. Personally, I would say the 75b compact would be the nicest.

My best gift giving was a couple years back. Wife and I went out to pick up some toys at K-Mart as fillers for some family stockings. As we pulled in, I noticed a Fire/Rescue crew there collecting toys. We went inside and started picking things to take back out to them. As we strolled around, I kept seeing more and more ideas, and some really good low prices. Before we really knew it, we had filled 2 carts with balls, bats, dolls, games, cars and trucks, as well as a few other items. I paid and we went out to hand them over. One of the guys came up and asked which one was for them. We stopped both carts and told him all. The look on his face was priceless. We got thanked and hands shook by all of them and walked away quickly. One of them called for us to stop and take a picture. We declined. Told him we did it for personal reasons, and for the kids. We wanted no praise for something we felt we should do. I regret that we haven't done it to that extent since. Best feeling I've had in a long time.

I have a few simple questions that I can't find straight forward answers to anywhere. First of all, let me add that I am 19 years old and that I live in eastern Tennessee therefore all questions will be pertaining to my age and where I live. The overall question is....What am I able to legally do as far as carrying and transportation? I realize I can't legally conceal carry at all until I am 21 years old with a cow permit. But can I open carry if I am using the pistol for hunting? Also can I open carry while fishing? Also I heard of this "castle doctrine" that has taken affect in June of 2015 that allows anyone above the age of 18 to have a loaded or unloaded handgun in their vehicle. Sorry if that is a bit long or confusing. I just need clarification before I wind up in jail. Thanks for your time and I appreciate all answers that could help me out

Free paper road maps of TN from the state are available here: http://www.tn.gov/tdot/topic/map-ordering You can also get them at most Interstate rest areas with a Visitor Center. The laminated ones would hold up much better, of course. I have no animosity toward gps, and I have to admit that the younger I get the more I am aware that it would help my aging brain, but I just like maps. I will say that I truly believe the quality of maps are declining.

Oh not me, I have embraced the gpsr since I first used it to find the exact spot a C-130 was to drop a load of Rangers in Africa in the middle of the night. But I still keep up with my map reading skills just in case the lights go out.

Good for you. Most of us, and I'm very guilty of it, seem to accumulate clothes that just don't get worn much. Me...I'm a sucker for aloha shirts. Buy them and just look at them in the closet. Usually because of my expanding waistline.

I agree, and I don't make a great effort to look since signs are supposed to be "prominently displayed". But there's more than a couple posts above where openly state they knowingly carry past signs.

You know, that's something many of us probably hadn't thought about. Maps, especially laminated forms. That's a great idea to add some to the bug. But for old folks like us, even in the suburban area, unless it's a desperate situation, we will probably stick it out here if at all possible.

I live in Chattanooga and we have a Bass Pro and a Cabelas about a mile away in Ga.For reloading supplies Sportsmans Warehouse has both of them beat.

Yellow pages is a good idea. To add to that line of thought I'll say paper maps. I keep a couple in each vehicle and an atlas on the bookshelf.

I'm in that process as well. We(mostly me) cleaned out a lot of clothes for the flooding victims this year. And I thought I did well emptying my closet. But upon a second look, I think we will have more as well. Which will be good for some of the local church clothing drives. Although we will have to pick a new reciepiant, as the Eastminster Church burned a week or so ago.

When I used to travel to Detroit regularly for work, I'd visit the Cabelas near Ann Arbor. It makes Bass Pro stores look like a Dollar General. I got a fair bit of Cabelas brand stuff there, typically on clearance. It all seemed good value so I've since ordered more stuff online and been happy with it. I've gotten a lot less from Bass Pro, but most of it was fine too. I'm not much of a fisherman and even though the Cabelas is 500 miles away, it was more convienent than the Bass Pro that's an hour away.

Vandy children's hospital 2017; you have a date. Not many people donate to them because they think there's a ton of money coming in... because it's Vandy. Unfortunately the kids are on the wrong side of that deal.

My in laws have had the same king mattress set for 26 years. Both of them have had back issues over the last few years. We bought them a king size Purple mattress to replace their old one.

The use of a light rail might just sneak up on you. I didn't think I would like them, but I got a couple of Glock lights from Steelharp some time ago. I put one on myG19 and found that I like it for use as house gun. So, if you haven't had a bad experience with one, or just hate railed frames; don't rule it out immediately.

See, here I was this whole time thinking that the "trendy" thing to do was to own something exotic, expensive, and flashy. Those that prefer simplicity, reliability, and the holy grail of value buy a Glock.

If you have more money than cents, then get all three, maybe not at once or over time. I find that when I narrow my decision down to say 2 models, I usually end up buying both. Then since I don't trade or sell, I end up with a collection over time. But I do accomplish the one thing, the decision factor is no longer a factor. If you have more cents (sense) than money, then what you are doing is correct, asking people for their input, but you will always have that thought later, I wonder about the other gun.

Few pistols have more aftermarket support than a Glock. Between being easy to shoot, easy to clean and disassemble, adaptable to any need, and readily marketable if you need to sell... what more can you ask for?

You might want to read Tennessee code yourself. TCA 39-17-1307: Unlawful carrying or possession of a weapon. (a) (1) A person commits an offense who carries, with the intent to go armed, a firearm or a club. (2) (A) The first violation of subdivision (a)(1) is a Class C misdemeanor, and, in addition to possible imprisonment as provided by law, may be punished by a fine not to exceed five hundred dollars ($500). (B) A second or subsequent violation of subdivision (a)(1) is a Class B misdemeanor. These are exceptions that apply to your situation when you don't have a handgun carry permit and are carrying a firearm. (e) (1) It is an exception to the application of subsection (a) that a person is carrying or possessing a firearm or firearm ammunition in a motor vehicle if the person: (A) Is not prohibited from possessing or receiving a firearm by 18 U.S.C. § 922(g) or purchasing a firearm by § 39-17-1316; and (B) Is in lawful possession of the motor vehicle. 39-17-1308. Defenses to unlawful possession or carrying of a weapon. (a) It is a defense to the application of § 39-17-1307 if the possession or carrying was: (1) Of an unloaded rifle, shotgun or handgun not concealed on or about the person and the ammunition for the weapon was not in the immediate vicinity of the person or weapon; 3) At the person's: (A) Place of residence; (B) Place of business; or (C) Premises; (4) Incident to lawful hunting, trapping, fishing, camping, sport shooting or other lawful activity; (5) By a person possessing a rifle or shotgun while engaged in the lawful protection of livestock from predatory animals;

Where can I get a cow permit? They're all over the place around here. Easier to shoot than deer and lots more meat! Correct on the 18 to possess answer. Carry permits for under 21 are ONLY for members of the military and veterans! (http://www.lexisnexis.com/hottopics/tncode/ 39-17-1351) Be careful as most police aren't really as knowledgeable on gun laws as you might think. Gun laws are very complex and there is a lot of misinformation out there. The best source for accurate information on TN firearms laws is the Tennessee Firearms Association. The TFA was responsible for getting TN the Handgun Carry Permit in the first place, as well as all of the positive changes in the firearms laws since then.

I much prefer Cabelas over BP. Thats why I'm worried about the BP buyout of them. I hope they dont go in and change too much, if anything.

It's more complicated. The guy who was city manager at the time wanted to make his mark as a pro development kinda pol apparently. I know the folks who made money off of the bigass rock pile and they weren't particularly political, just happened to own one of the last large tracts of land in a city that can't annex into the county, thanks to VA laws. The idiot savant city council fell for it. Part of that was jealousy of Bristol, TN. Part of it was their thinking they could swindle a few bucks off the deal. And part of it was a desperate development company that was losing their ass and needed badly to do some kind of deal no matter what the actual chances of it working were. Looks like their most memorable accomplishment will be the bankruptcy of one of the few remaining independent cities in the state of VA.

Unless they are hanging from a metal detector one has to walk through, I rarely, if ever, see these signs you speak of. I'm too busy paying attention to my surroundings. I've never been harmed by a sign, so they tend to get little notice.
