  1. Today, the staff of TGO did something that we very rarely do.  We banned a handful of members - and by an handful, I mean five members plus one special case.   While one can certainly read into the changes to the forum structure this week and David's admonition to "be nice or be gone", I thought I would share our reasoning with you guys in some detail so that no one is left guessing and out intentions will be clear.   In short, this community is something that we're very passionate about protecting. And, community is a delicate thing sometimes.  We like to believe that TGO is a place where we can discuss big topics, and I honestly believe that it is.  We ask our members to abide by the Code of Conduct we've put forth, and for the large part everyone complies.  I have to commend our members, because you guys actually do such a phenomenal job policing the board that moderators rarely have to get involved at all.  If you've been involved in more than one or two forums over the years, you probably realize what a rarity that is.   But, of late we've sensed a change.  We've had a few members who have just had the effect of turning threads sour.  Many of you are probably like me and are quite capable of reading viewpoints you don't agree with and simply dismissing them.  You need some pretty thick skin on the internet, and we've got some fairly mature personalities on TGO.  Yet, when a person keeps being presented with negative arguments, while you may be able to dismiss them, you find yourself distancing yourself from the source.  We realized as a staff this week, that TGO was becoming a place that weren't enjoying hanging out as much.  That's when we realized that we needed to take some action.   I expected that we would end up booting a few dozen people.  When you grow from a few thousand people where we were a few years ago to over 21,000 people today, you're going to have some bad apples get mixed in.  I was wrong in my expectation.  I was actually quite surprised to see how few voices it takes to turn something completely sour.    I want to be very clear that this isn't an exercise as some have opined, in political correctness.  Those of you who know David or I personally know that we're about the farthest thing you'll get from politically correct.  This isn't a case about tolerance; rather it's one of over indulgence.  A few members have taken advantage of the graces of this forum, and we're not going to sit idly by and let that happen.   We made the changes to the way the political forum shows up so that you actually have to go and seek it out to participate.  We welcome the conversations, but it was becoming overpowering.  At one point a couple of weeks ago out of 20 threads on the "new content" page, 18 were political in nature.   If you hit the "New Content" button now, you might notice that it actually looks like we're running a gun forum again.  I welcome the change.   Several of you sent either David or I notes this week following David's call for guilty consciences.  I want to thank each of you who did that, and let you each know that not a one of you we're on our list of people who were abusing the forum.  I would ask that each of you consider your tone in posting.  There's a time for hyperbole.  There's a time for strong rhetoric.  Consider those times carefully.   I would ask each of our members to be mindful of your tone.  In this modern time of zero sum politics where what's good for one party must necessarily be bad for the other party, it's easy to become polarized ourselves.  But, I'd ask you to consider guns as a bit of a special case.  With over 300,000,000 guns in this country, guns aren't a republican/democrat thing.  They're an American thing. With 20,000 members, I expect we've got people of at least slightly different flavors of politic.  But, each of them joined this forum because they like guns.  Please watch your voices and consider your rhetoric.  Let's not make enemies where we don't have to.   We are going to be watching things carefully in the coming months.  Please help us out, as the staff doesn't see every thread that's posted.   We really do value our membership here and the community that has formed.  Many of you, if you're like me have made new and lasting friends as a part of this board.  I look forward to meeting more of our members and will seek to do so in the coming months.   Thanks for all of your help!   Mac

  2. Ok, I'll jump in here with one of my (hobby) or passion... Building scale models. I look at them as 3d paintings and a way to "engineer" interesting displays as well as pay tribute to the veterans that have gone before. P51D of the 55th FG A4C Skyhawk M4 Sherman The tank was featured in a Scale Modeling magazine several years ago. I'll compete in some local competitions every now and I have a couple displayed in various museums... But mostly, I just have a mini-museum at the house! Steve

  3. 1st I need to thank everyone for there ideas last year. here is my final fix for a shooting table for me, I hope! its look junky but it is light weight and easy for my wife to break down and carry. despite its looks it is solid and the swivel bipod with the level on the scope takes care of leveling issues. plus it fits in the van without a trailer.

  11. Yes.   Scenario                 1: Jack goes quail hunting before school and then pulls into the school parking lot with his shotgun in his truck's gun rack.. 1957 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack. 2013 - School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers.      Scenario                 2: Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school. 1957 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies. 2013 - Police called and SWAT team arrives -- they arrest both Johnny and Mark.  They are both charged with assault and both expelled even though Johnny started it.  They are also required to attend six weeks of anger management therapy.   Scenario                 3: Jeffrey will not be still in class, he disrupts other students. 1957 - Jeffrey sent to the Principal's office and given a good paddling by the Principal. He then returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.                 2013 - Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin. He becomes a zombie. He is then tested for ADD. The family gets extra money (SSI) from the government because Jeffrey has a disability.    Scenario                 4: Billy breaks a window in his neighbor's car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt.                 1957 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college and becomes a successful businessman..  2013 - Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse, Billy is removed to foster care and joins a gang. The state psychologist is told by Billy's sister that she remembers being abused herself and their dad goes to prison.   Scenario                 5: Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school. 1957 - Mark shares his aspirin with the Principal out on the smoking dock. 2013 - The police are called and Mark is expelled from school for drug violations. His car is then searched for drugs and weapons.                    Scenario                 6: Pedro fails high school English. 1957 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English and goes to college. 2013 - Pedro's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against the state school system and Pedro's English teacher. English is then banned from core curriculum. Pedro is given his diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot read & write English.                   Scenario                 7: Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from the Fourth of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle and blows up a red ant bed. 1957 - Ants die. 2013 - ATF, Homeland Security and the FBI are all called. Johnny is charged with domestic terrorism.  The FBI investigates his parents - and all siblings are removed from their home and all computers are confiscated.   Scenario                 8: Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee.  He is found crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him to comfort him. 1957 - In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing.                 2013 - Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy.

  12. I like the 32 in a little pocket gun. It's not the stoutest round by any means, but I'm fairly confident that no one want to volunteer to get shot with it. :D Very manageable recoil out of my P32. It would be fun to shoot even, if it weren't so small and such a low capacity. I've thought about getting a 380 but for anything bigger I'd rather have a 9mm and in the pocket gun world, well, I like the 32. Some of the hotter loads aren't too bad, I load mine with semi flat FMJ ball and worry not about over penetration or expansion. Shot placement will be key, period. Of course that just my line of thought, YMMV and probably will.

  16. Well I got my goodies in today :-) Gearhead Works TMF Powertac E5 Light Powertac E5 Switch Magpul Illumination switch http://powertacusa.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=189 I was hunting for a light that was well made and could load batteries from the front without the head being to long to hit my soon to acquire suppressor... This light is fantastic and the build quality is awesome... and has a lifetime warranty I ordered mine from amazon which apparently was the Gen II (700lm) they now offer the Gen III (950lm) Length: 126.5 mm. Bezel diameter: 25.4 mm. Body diameter: 22.0 mm. Tailcap diameter: 24.0mm. Has four modes firefly/low/medium/high/strobe all which can be changed at the headby the push of a button (not rotating the head) Here are some pics.. One thing I didn't consider and I will change later is the button needs to be indexed so its at the bottom if you wanna change the LM output easier .. Also I did add a little bit of electrical tape around the body to get a tighter fit in the TMF..Not a big deal though Here is one picture I took mounting the light back in the TMF further.. Clean look but also prevents you from changing the batteries from the front and changing the LM output

  17. Doubled up with my buddy this morning. We worked this flock of birds for a long time this morning. There were 4 strutters, 8 jakes and a wad of hens. The hens were very vocal till about 8am. The strutters spent over an hour hung up at 70 yards. My buddy was up front on the gun and I was sitting a couple trees back calling. I finally got one of the longbeards to to ease off the hill our way. My buddy got a long shot and hammered him. As soon as he shot, the other longbeards came running in and jumped on his bird, so I hammered one too. We laser ranged the shots afterwards and they were a bit further than I would recommend. Fortunately we had both spent lots of time patterning and tweaking to make the shots lethal at that range. Both shooting 3.5" Hevi Magblends. I'd like to be good enough to call them to 20 yards every time. Till then, it's good to know the effective range of my gun. Don't ask how far... :) It was a great hunt and good memories were made. 18. Might be time to install an aftermarket trigger. $100 is worth it to be able to keep my guns. Not saying you will loose your gun but because of the amount of guns needing repair it will likely be hunting season before you get them back.

  20. Even nostalgia isn't what it used to be.   A friend and I got called into the deputy-head's office one time on an unrelated issue. He thought we would have evidence of our wrong-doings in our bags (which would have made no sense but whatever). What we did have were 6" knives we had brought in to compare. We were just told not to bring them in again and that was that.   I guess if nothing else, it brought discussion of the wrong-doings themselves to an end (of which we were totally guilty). :D

  21. Here's the biggest issue I've seen (including on this forum and in my own family) from "pro-2A citizens" - they don't support it because they HAVE or CAN GET an HCP and they don't want other's rights expanded for fear of additional postings.  I can guarantee if you were in a position where you were  a law abiding citizen but could not get an HCP for some reason, you would be all for it.  I have yet to see all of those with the Gadsden DTOM and mall ninja Facebook pictures put their money with their mouth is and actually support one of the biggest advances in TN Firearms laws in the past decade.  I can guarantee you, not all people who would be open carrying if this law passed would be the **** that walks around Walmart with a 6" Taurus Judge in a nylon Uncle Mike's Holster to act like a badass. While OC isn't ideal, if its passed, I damn sure will carry everywhere that isn't posted because its MY only option.     *I'm sure this post will piss people off, so rant over - I don't mean to anger anybody, but provide another perspective on this bill*

  30. Sig has filed a lawsuit over the ATF decision regarding the muzzle brake on the MPX. The ATF classified the brake as a suppressor component and has determined that the MPX cannot be sold without a form 4. Sig and their clanking balls have decided not only to sue the ATF in an effort to force them to reverse their decision, but has also named Director B. Todd Jones directly as a defendent. This means that the ATF must respond within 21 days. I think I just became a Sig fanboy.    http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2014/04/foghorn/sig-sauer-sues-atf-calling-muzzle-brake-silencer/

  32. Guy at range knew I was looking for a project gun and I purchased a Armsco 22 made in Nashville probably in the 50's. They were made and sold by a Army Navy store in Nashville for $19.95. It looks like it was made in someone's garage. Gun was beat and dirty. Took it home cleaned it up and back to range and it actually fired, most of the time. Trigger pull is excessive and it shot about a foot high at 5 yards. I stripped it and rounded all the sharp edges and got rid of all the rust. Polished it up and painted it but didn't like it so stripped off the paint and cold blued it. Doesn't look to bad except side plate is different material from the frame and it didn't come out so hot. Actually found parts for it at Numrich. It came with white plastic grips that I replaced with some wood ones. Recent range trip and it fired every time in SA mode but only about 80% of time in DA mode. It's strange because you remove the cylinder rod and cylinder to load/unload. OK to shoot but it sure was a fun project. I had the thing completely apart and put back together about 10 times.    Here are some pictures  http://gtowngeorge.blogspot.com/

(Yeah, that'll go well...)[/quote] It works well enough in 30 states. The bearing of arms is an individual right. While it is important that one be well versed in the use of the arms they choose to bear, it is not place of the government to step in and compel the citizen to have training or jump through other hoops prior to exercising that natural right.
