1. I'm so proud of my 14 year old daughter. She attends a private school. Her school requires all 8th grade students to do a 25 hour project and log their hours. I helped her with a couple of difficult cuts on the angle grinder and router but she did most everything on this. She even demonstrated it outside of her school. Her teacher was so excited to give it a try as soon as the teacher shot it she said "Well you'll be getting an A!". Other teachers heard about it and came out to give it a go. This was her project: -Stock is 2x4 pine -Trigger and mechanism is a flat piece of steel cut and bent after she heated it with a blowtorch. -Bow is a piece of 1" PVC heated and flattened then reheated and bent to shape. (People on the interwebs are getting 150lb draw on 1 1/2" PVC so we went with 1" -String is 550 paracord -bolt is an oak dowel rod with a penny ground into an arrow shape and packing tape fletching. ( I actually made this arrow, she made two like it with foam on the tips in case they wouldn't allow her to shoot the sharp one) Yup, my daughter rocks! -southernasylum

 2. Many moons ago my family and I were robbed in our driveway after returning from church. I was not carrying and there was no such thing as a HCP then anyways. I was pistol whipped on the forehead and the children were put against a wall of the house ( both around 10 - 13 years old ) , they took my wallet , house keys and my wife's purse. When I came to from the momentary black-out ( I hit the blacktop when the pistol hit my forehead , big blood puddle ) we got into the house by raising our manual garage door. I went to get my Sig P226 from the bedroom and racked the slide ( kept it with no round in the chamber ) and went outside searching through the bushes and dark looking for the robbers. Once the cops and ambulance got there I was treated and they left. I barricaded all doors that night until I could change the locks the next morning. While sitting in my den going over things at around midnight I decided to double check my pistol , guess what , no round in the chamber. I did not pull the slide back far enough when I thought I charged it. Funny thing is , I had $3 in my wallet , my wife $10 in her purse ; my 10 year old son , $60 in his wallet belt they did not get. The moral of this story is , load it , keep it loaded , otherwise it's a brick and you could be too.

 3. It's made from 1084 carbon steel 5/32" thick. Total length is just over 10" with a blade length of about 5 1/2". It's a big knife with indigo blue dymondwood for scales and stainless steel pins and lanyard hole. The spine has file work from the handle to about 1 1/2" from the point. As you can see it is a drop point design. I acid etched this blade except for the edge which I protected and also gave it a bit of a design. This knife turned out terrific...it's one of my favorites. The handle is made for a big hand. It's thick but nicely contoured to fit the hand. I'll be making more of this blade design in the future. It's of good size and the shape lends itself to many different design opportunities.

 4. Good things come to those who ask their wife nicely. I found and bought my dream gun today. A s&w 65-3 3" .357 mag, quite possibly the most utilitarian , practical handgun ever made. They were common on the used market about 10 years ago but then they dried up to where they do not hardly exist. The best part was I bought it at 10 years ago pricing. It was a Puerto Rican Police Trade in. I have all these 4" and 2" revolvers now that I do not have a use for because I have a 3" k frame.

 6.   The idea here is to build confidence by having gun ready to fire with no round loaded, to prove it won't go off.   Anyway, yes, rack the slide with no mag, then insert mag. Carry it same way then as you would if round were in chamber.   - OS

 7. Excuse me while I whip this out.... :) http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5PmnKOkt7fI I also can't imagine carrying anything bigger than 4" daily. Been carrying something about that size for dang near 40 years... Why change now? ;) Other than camping or just for show, a knife much bigger than that gets unwieldy... unless your name is Spots.

 8.
This is a very interesting topic to me, as I have two small children. I am currently looking for the "safest" hot weapon with a safety. I don't carry my revolver often for this reason. My children are constantly climbing on me, etc. Balls being thrown, airplanes, spills- you never really know :) I want to find the weapon through research and then train w it. But during that time of training- I may not carry chambered. Or I may only carried chambered away from the children or when I am in a situation that is quite uncomfortable. We travel a lot with the children and I carry hot in and out of restrooms and travel stop areas. But I am a nervous wreck the entire time. In the car it stays next to me in a gun vault and then unloaded when we are back w the husband or feel safe. I keep an unloaded shot gun near the bed as well when the husband is out of town. I wish I had the right answer and open to the right answer but it's like the threat that is apparent is the risk of my babies getting harmed...by me.Btw- I am taking opinions on a handgun that can safely be carried hot- with a safety, by a smaller framed female with smallish hands that can train to quickly disarm said safety, that wears tight clothes, runs, and has rheumatoid arthritis w a bit reduced grip strength that can't handle much recoil in a caliber that will drop a meth head and be enjoyable enough to practice with (lots) without flinching. :). Y'all know of one of those? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Ladyhay, I have 4 boys ages 4,5,10,13. My wife and I both carry glocks. She is a small framed woman similar description to yourself except without the arthritis. I carry with one in the chamber and she does not (most of the time). My kids climb all over me and use the gun in its holster as a step up at times. We have zero concerns with a unintentional discharge. With all of that said my kids also know that we carry and know what a firearm can do. My 5 year old has already began shooting at the range. When considering how to carry please consider what your other hand will be doing during an attack. I would bet that it will be sweeping the kids in a safe direction and loading a weapon will be the last thing on your mind. When you decide on your method of carry do it that way 100% of the time. Having it chambered here but not there is a sure way to find yourself in a bad place if you need that weapon. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

 10. I just hope they let Seth Macfarlanes team do the writing. The Simpsons writers have been coasting in neutral for some years now. Personally I thought the Futurama/Simpsons crossover would happen first. I'm a little disappointed that even after writing the book, they still haven't made the show.

 11. I bought a air soft pistol for my daughter last year to teach her the firearms fundamentals. She liked it and did well with the safety concerns so I picked her up a SR22 this week off Arms List. The first shot was dead center from 15 ft. You could not wipe the smile off her face. After the first mag. she said " wow that was fun" we spent the next half hour working on stance and the trigger reset. She is hooked.

 17. Yup, +4" is getting on up there for daily carry. I'm gonna try my 5.5" Voyager for a while, we'll see. (currently toting the 4" one on bottom, and that's an XD 4" Service model for comparison): - OS

 18. I do carry two knives. A cheap NRA folder in my pocket and the blade in my leatherman on my belt. The folder gets way more use. From what I've seen, a big folder is so thick as to be unpractical for carry... excepting that monster OS has, which is just hilarious. I'd love to carry that thing around just for the reactions (see the video above) :).

Exactly, take out the magazine and pull the slide to charge the gun and then insert a magazine but remember if u get in trouble don't forget to rack it again to get it loaded and no worries being a newby we have all been there it takes time to get comfortable with a gun but u will get there and it is great from you to be on this forum and ask the questions, that's why we are here for - to help a fellow member and one more advice get to the range and shoot as much as u can afford it every other weekend will do and u will get to understand your gun quickly

 21. Yup. Oddly enough that side if the change will have almost no effect on me at all. I would get some awful funny looks whipping out a huge knife at work. I'm way more excited to be able to carry auto knives. hurry Protech!

 23. yes the 12 hour plane ride is not fun downtown Honolulu looks like Memphis or Detroit I stayed at the Hilton Waikiki village it was nice but a beach front room is 385.00 plus a 20.00 resort fee and 30.00 to park give me the redneck Riviera any time the beaches are small and mostly manmade you can watch them put sand on them every night crime is very high at least where I went

 24. You could do that to carry it cocked but unloaded, but if your carrying a semi you're going to need to rack the slide back anyway to chamber a round when ready to shoot. No real reason to do so twice IMO. Just leave it with an empty chamber and rack the slide when you draw.

 25. All in all, though - while it's probably neat to go to Hawaii once, it's just not worth it to me.   I'd take the Caribbean any day of the week.  It's more cost effective, about 6.5 hours closer via plane, and there are a lot fewer people.   St. John takes the cake in my book.

 26. I like the Big Island.  It's far better than the urban train wreck that is Honolulu.  Pearl Harbor is terribly sobering, but the rest of Honolulu just isn't worth it to me.    My wife and I stayed in the Hilton Waikoloa Village a couple of years ago, and I'd definitely recommend it.  I've stayed all over Waikiki Beach.  When I'm there, I like the Moana Surfrider.

 34. Yeah, I got a few lying around. Bought at odd times and places, for different guns an purposes. I should do as you do, tercel buddy. I really need only a few for the specific carry guns. But when you run across something...it's like...Wow. I can use that for this or that pistol. And I never do. I should go thru them again and let most go. And as I type this, there are 3 holsters staring back at me on the desk. Just daring me to get rid of them.

 35.   Carry it cocked without one in chamber. Check it every couple of days to see if it's still cocked.   After x amount of time, you'll be convinced it ain't gonna fire unless the trigger is pulled, and you'll keep one in the chamber, as of course you should.   - OS

 36. Had a dog attack my wife in our yard a few years ago and the pistol I had on me had a empty chamber and malfunctioned hanging a round sideways when I racked the slide so I had to resort to knife and hand to hand combat with it. Since then all pistols are ready to go at all times and the shotgun is too. Btw the wife has great respect with what I can do with a blade if I have to now lol.

 40. I've lost interest in the 299 Days series. I just finished the 6th book I believe. These books provide very little value when you look at the pages and the price. At this point I think the author is just trying to drag it out of fatten his pockets. On top of that, it's boring.   6 books in and nothing has happned. Seriously, nothing. They killed one meth head and bugged out to a cabin. Whopped-dee-do. :snore:   The Holding Their Own series is leaps and bounds ahead of this.

 46. Dean A. Mellberg shoots and kills four people and wounds 22 at Fairchild Air Force Base hospital on June 20, 1994 with his AK type rifle.   His mass shooting was ended by Senior Airman Andrew Brown, age 25 with the 92nd Air Force Security Police Squadron.   While patrolling base housing areas on his bicycle a quarter mile away, he received the call over his radio and responded.   When he spotted the gunman some 70 yards away he ditched his bicycle and ordered Mellberg to drop his weapon.   When Mellberg turned and shot at Brown, he crouched and engaged him with his M9 Beretta.  Of four rounds fired, two missed the gunman, one hit his shoulder and a final round struck his head ending the fight.   If I recall correctly he did suffer PTSD after the incident not for ending Mellberg's life, but because he wished he was able to get there faster IOT save more lives.  I can only imagine how out of breath he was while making the shot after hauling ass on a bicycle, and 70 yards is a hell of a shot even when you're not winded.   I have a hard time getting all my rounds center mass at 25 yards while I'm not under stress in the comfort of a shooting range. I remember a story of a man who was shooting an enfield rifle from his porch at police officers.  One of them had only his sidearm to respond, and he was a competitive pistol shooter, but wasn't experienced at shooting at the long range he was faced with.  IIRC after the shootout ended they found a nice tight group of impacts that were about a foot too high because he wasn't sure what the holdover would be.   Other scenarios I can think of include shootings at theatres (if you're in the back row and they're near the front it's easily over 25 yards), across a gas station lot, some places of work, and so on. You just never know.   Obviously as a civilian it's not our responsibility to end killing sprees, despite being justified in protecting a third party.  And in some circumstances it may be better not to draw at all.  However as a community carry permit owners in general tend to be people who, by their very nature, want to help others.  To protect ourselves and our family is our first priority, but when something goes down there are a brave few who will run towards the threat rather than away if it means saving lives.   The odds of you needing a firearm in the first place are thankfully small, and the odds of you needing to be able to make a longer distance shot is even smaller still, but I can't imagine who ends up having to do so wishes they had LESS practice at longer ranges.  Even if you never need it, it's good to know yourself and know your weapon -- and more importantly know your limits.   Be an expert with your gun, know it's ins and outs, and learn what you can and can't do with it.

 47. Don't think I offered an opinion, I did ask a few questions of you, and stated some facts.   Once again, as you evidently did not get it, I will pose one of the questions, the most salient.  Where is it written in the Constitution that ANY amount of training is necessary to enjoy the right to keep and bear arms.  If there is no text that you can provide, then your statement about training being necessary is an opinion, is it not?
