This is one of those situations where it doesn't matter if what he did was technically legal or not. This man and his antics certainly turned someone who may have been a neutral bystander into a supporter of "common sense gun laws." Seriously. Why go confront someone in a situation like this? It's stupid? Did he have backup in his little posse? What if the people in the car had had malicious intent? What if there were more than one of them? This guy, in his bravado escalated a situation needlessly. Because the lady was just talking on her phone, he just made gun owners at large look bad. Lord knows we need some more examples of that. This is Bellvue - not out in the country somewhere. Monitor the situation from your living room window - and call the cops if you think something is going down. It's Bellvue after all. They'll be there pretty quick. I'm all for taking care of your family and your neighbors. But this was stupid - and maybe across the line legally. Nobody wants the next Trayvon to be in Tennessee.6 points

He should have just called the police and reported a suspicious car parked on the street and let them handle it. She may think twice about parking in a neighborhood at night again. Why does she care if he gets prosecuted? After all she was the suspicious person in his neighborhood. It kind of cancels out. They both contributed to the situation. Question: Was it really that Important of a call to risk a distracted encounter with an armed guy in dark neighborhood. Lesson to be learned; put up the cell phone and keep driving. If you absolutely have to stop don't pull into a dark dead end road. I'd say both parties are lucky that nothing went wrong and hopefully they learn a lesson from this. No harm no foul.4 points

That was stupid on the resident's part and he at the very least should have received a tongue lashing from the police. The use of deadly force to protect property is not justified in Tennessee, first of all, and secondly the resident was no longer on his property when he entered the public street to confront the motorist. Going off of your property, brandishing a firearm, to confront another citizen on public property to ask them "what the hell they are doing" is just stupid no matter the circumstances. He could have easily been arrested for brandishing a weapon. Probably should have been.4 points

Also, please apologize to your neighbor. I surely didn't mean to scare anyone, maybe I came off a little strong, but you have to have a solid command presence when you are engaging in perimeter security like that. I figured she would feel safe after I left knowing we were watching out for the good people of the culdesac.3 points

But it's Bellevue! You obviously need someone to lay down suppressive fire while you evaluate the threat...:) I live across the main road from monkeylizard and KahrMan. My biggest concern when walking around at night are the neighborhood dogs! I went for a short walk when the power went out just to take in the peace and quiet.3 points

I'll go ahead and say it: sitting in an idle car in front of someone's house talking on the phone is highly shady and suspicious in this day and age. BTW, I am in no way defending what that guy allegedly did. He may just need some kind of counseling.2 points

Around here, a guy walking down the road at night with a rifle=coon hunter. Probably looking for his dog.2 points

Somebody with a rifle doesn't scare me. Doesn't even make me nervous by itself. Somebody with poor muzzle discipline makes me nervous, but doesn't scare me. Somebody aiming a rifle at me with an intent to shoot scares me. The first two are stupid. The third is criminal.2 points

What else should she have done? Kept driving along a darkened winding road taking an important call that's requiring her attention? Just pulled over on the non-existent shoulder? She did exactly as she was supposed to do. Dude playing Rick Grimes is a paranoid jackass. If Bellevue can go through the floods we went through in 2010 without devolving into Lord of the Flies, a simple power outage hardly justifies patrolling with a long gun. Cell service was up. The low clouds still had that dull pink glow of the Nashville light pollution. It was clear this wasn't some widespread EOTWAWKI event, and Bellevue is not exactly a powder-keg waiting for any little thing to send us all into a rampaging looting frenzy. As far as the cul-de-sac goes, (and I'm only guessing) it was likely one of several "neighborhoods" on the main road that leads to the neighborhood where KahrMan and I live. There are 3 or 4 in a row that are little more than a cul-de-sac with 20-30 houses.2 points

I don't even mow my yard unarmed. I have no idea what's in the area behind my property and of course, who's in the vehicles going down the road (but that's another topic ) I don't want to be the headline when they realize we have cougars around here. My father lost a long battle with Parkinson's early this morning. He went at home surrounded by his family. We will never be able to express our love as much as we would like for our parents. We will miss dad greatly. He was an avid shooter and a great man. Ha taught me many needed lessons in life. Hug your parents today and tell them how much you love them. RIP Dad! You are at peace and the journey now begins anew.2 points

MCTS will be hosting a USPSA match on the 13th and 14th of August. I am going for 5 super cool stages plus a classifier this match. If the weather is nice I would shoot a second gun in the afternoon. We will need enough people for a good squad in order to stick around. Let me know if you are interested. As always--new, safe shooters are welcome. You need a safe handgun, strong side holster, enough mags to shoot a 32 round stage and about 200 rounds. Probably a lot of steel so bring extra. USPSA has two new divisions: Carry optics; slide mounted optic sight, and Pistol Caliber Carbine; just what it says. Great people, great fun and you get to meet me. Which is worth the price of admission. Set-up begins at 7:00am. All help is greatly appreciated. I'll find something for you to do. New shooters meeting by 8:30ish and shots downrange by 9:00ish.1 point

My wife and I have this unspoken understanding. I don't comment on how much fabric she buys or new sewing/embroidery machine from time to time and she doesn't comment on my ammo and gun purchases. It has worked for years. It helps that we are both fairly cheap when it comes to spending money or it could run us into the poor house. For those that don't think it is a fair trade off, I'm pretty sure she is ahead of me on spending but not as much as she use to be since we moved to a free state.1 point

He violated the law (although not aggravated assault); she didn’t. Sounds like the cops used their discretion on him carrying a rifle; that’s okay. I don’t know why the cops would tell her to go see the detectives. In Tennessee do detectives or the DA decided on charges? Where I was our Command Officers would have told us to do a report and forward it to the DA to see if they wanted to pursue it. As far as approaching the guy with weapons drawn; that would be standard procedure. Three cops in Baton Rouge (and many others in other places) are dead because they didn’t take a man with a gun call seriously.1 point

I do see both sides of this. I am not so sure of the "no crime was committed." An assault is carried out by a threat of bodily harm coupled with an apparent, present ability to cause the harm. The threat does not have to be verbal. Having a rifle pointed at your steering wheel while being confronted seems to me to meet the definition of assault. Since it will come down to a he said, she said I doubt he will be charged.1 point

Thanks for the plug GTG. As to the "basics" of hard skills (as opposed to soft skills like paying attention to what is happening around you, quick decision making, verbal engagement/disengagement, positioning, etc) once the fight has commenced is.... To quickly access your gun without getting killed or crippled in the process Hit what you are aiming at Be able to clear malfunctions if they occur Be able to reload the weapon as necessary. I think everyone can agree that being able to quickly access your weapon is important. And we can all agree that doing it while not getting shot stabbed or bludgeoned to death makes sense. We all agree that being able to clear a malfunction is good to be able to do and we all agree that being able to keep the gun fed if it runs out of ammo is a good thing. Where things get cloudy is on the "hit what you aim at". There are different thoughts, theories, methodologies on what is the best way to do this. Also the "don't get hit" could include shooting while moving or moving to cover first. Unfortunately there are no bumper sticker sized answers that cover all contingencies. But I agree....the advanced stuff is just applying those basics under more chaotic , and complex situations.1 point

From what I have seen, the Remington 1911s have been the only bright spot in the terrible titan that is Freedom Group. Every one I have handled has been well built and imho, a great value. I expect this would be as well. Now, the re-re-released R1... YUCK!1 point

I sold my 9mm Shield to get a 45 Shield. Great choice... this 45 Shield is fantastic! Had to buy all new carry gear to make this my main carry though. Its slightly different enough to have issues with my 9mm holsters. Well worth it though, this is definitely becoming my primary carry gun. Nice size, feels great, shoots great... Hard part now is finding magazines. S&W aren't even selling magazines yet, you can only get them if you buy a gun...1 point

I welcome & respect your opinion. That keeps life interesting. A few of us went to the range a couple weeks ago & we enjoyed trying out each others firearms. In fact, while we were there, a young couple walked up & asked us about our handguns & some advice about firearm safety. It turned out they were newlyweds in their early 20's & it was their first trip to a range. He said he had only fired a gun once in his life & had just bought a SCCY & was bringing it to the range that evening to shoot it for the first time. By the time the range closed he got to try out my SIG P229, SR9, LC9S, my friends' Shield 40 & Colt AR15, & my dad's LCP. He said it was more fun than he ever expected & they were grateful we were willing to let him try so many guns. We all exchanged info & will probably get together again sometime.1 point

1 year, maybe 2 is about all you can get out of rotating your stock of commonly used foods. Longer than that and you need the air tight long term storage of beans, rice, etc. Practicaly speaking though, the longest I have heard of is 7-10 years storage. Pretty much have to rotate your stock beyond that, which you should be doing anyways. Realistically though, 2 years is really about all you NEED. Whatever time SHTF, use your stocks to survive until spring. Then you should be planting a garden and hunting in the fall and winter and/or raising animals. You can't store enough food to survive indefinitely. You have to replenish somehow. This is assuming it's a permanent TEOTWAWKI. If it's a temporary SHTF or a regional disaster, temporary stocks are fine until supply lines are back in order.1 point

I purchased a Kimber Solo from a member on here. It was supposedly unfired(or almost new), but had already changed hands before I got it. I couldn't see any indications of use other than the normal wear from slide action. First time i shot it, it didn't feed the second round. I put it up and decided the ammo I had was the issue. The next time I tried more rounds of different varieties. Same problem, but worse. It wouldn't feed anything more than once or twice. Called Kimber and quickly realized the slide stop had not engaged a tiny spring that needs to be caught upon installation. Now there doesn't seem to be an issue and it feeds anything I've put in it. I still wonder who and when the slide was installed incorrectly. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that both previous owners had the issue. I'm glad that I picked up a cheap Solo, but even more glad that I tested before carrying.1 point
