A person can't pick and choose which parts of the bible are right and which parts are wrong, you either believe it or you don't. I don't think a homosexual man or woman is any more of a sinner than myself but homosexuality is a sin and they'll have to answer for that just the same as I will for the multiple sins that I commit every day. There's only been on man to walk this earth that was free from sin and as far as i'm concerned he will be the only one judge anyone of us. I have a few gay friends and I don't think of them as any less than myself even though I hold the bibles view on their choice of lifestyle, it's not my business to judge. If this had been any other religion it wouldn't have even made the small talk between news segments but because it is a Christian family in the sea of liberal that is show biz, it is shouted from the hilltop. They claim that Phil is a bigot for expressing his religious beliefs when asked about them but maybe if they actually new the definition of bigotry ( bigoted attitudes; intolerance toward those who hold different opinions from oneself) they would realize that they themselves are the bigots in the room. This was a setup and when Phil didn't say things in a bigotry enough like manner for them they chopped up and edited the film to suit their ends.13 points

Any Christian in this country (including myself) who thinks Christians are being persecuted needs to take a trip to China or Myanmar or any of the M/E countries that were part of the Arab Spring. Getting told that your ideas are bad is not persecution. Having your family raped in front of you before they disembowel and behead you, THAT'S persecution.7 points

For those who dig deep into scripture, and sense a view through His Spirit, this whole episode becomes recognizable for what it is - A harbinger. It has a purpose much larger than Phil Robertson. In this day and age, December 2013, there are few voices that will be heard as widely as Duck Dynasty. It is the very largest cable viewing audience in America - ever. There is a scripture, Isaiah 55:11 that says the Lord's word will go out, and not return void. 8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,†declares the Lord. 9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. 10 As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, 11 so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. To those that are willing to hear, Phil's words were a warning, a harbinger, but also a message of repentance, grace, mercy, and love. There is still time, but not much. According to scripture, God continues to call us to him, and away from sin, and continues to withhold his hand against sin in order that more shall inherit the gift of the grace offered by Christ. It will not always be this way. This event, along with Billy Graham's recent message were absolutely the hand of God calling in ever increasing urgency. Scorn if you wish, but it is real folks. It's serious, and it is not about various religions, it is about Christ. period. And he is calling LOUDLY. etc - Phil Robertson7 points

As a person who does a lot of the banning around here, I can say authoritatively that no one has ever been kicked off of TGO for being a "homophobe." You can think that gays are icky and you're going to catch it if you get to close. We don't care. Where I draw the line is when a person is hateful towards another member or expresses open animosity towards a group. We just don't need that here. We've got a big audience these days. Check the front page and you'll see that we're just shy of 20,000 members. We put a lot of effort into protecting this community, and the "family-friendliness" of it. Frankly, you guys are responsible for a lot more of that than the staff is. I really enjoy it when someone tells me that they don't mind their kids reading TGO as they learn about guns. We're going to protect that. Plain and simple.6 points

Like I said in a blog post about this issue, the claims that this is about freedom of speech is laughable on several levels. First, nobody is saying Phil can't express his views. All A&E did was say he can't use their network to promote them and they don't want to be associated with him or his views any longer. Second, like any freedom, exercising it comes with personal responsibility. You are free to say pretty much anything you want, and there may be consequences to what you say. If you want to say something you know is controversial, you have to own the consequences. You walk into your boss' office and cuss her/him up one side of the room and down the other, you're going to get fired. That's not a violation of your free speech rights. Third, there are multiple examples of conservatives and Christians calling for the firing of liberal pundits. I have seen first hand on this forum multiple incidents of people with opposing viewpoints being insulted and run off for expressing them. These debates are never about tolerance or free speech; they are about people demanding to have their voice heard while demanding to have other people's ideas shut down. Personally, I think what the guy said was inappropriate and smacked of ignorance. If one really thinks that acceptance of what two people do in the privacy of their own homes will lead to bestiality, I don't know what to do with them. If one thinks that Southern blacks during the pre-civil rights era weren't unhappy and never complained because you saw them singing songs in the fields, that is ignorant. I'll protect his right to say it, I respect the ability of a private employer to determine the standards for acceptable conduct from those they employ, and I also say he should have the opportunity to redeem himself if he chooses to. That is the Christian way. Edit: And it only took me about 5 minutes to determine that DD was one of the worst shows I have ever seen,5 points

Also this... "Our culture has accepted two huge lies. The first is that if you disagree with someone's lifestyle, you must fear or hate them. The second is that to love someone means you agree with everything they believe or do. Both are nonsense. You don't have to compromise convictions to be compassionate." - Rick Warren5 points

Saw this on Facebook today: "Man on TV disagrees with LGBT lifestyle - the left explodes with indignation. Islamic world subjects gays to violent murder just for being gay - silence. I think we've found the double standard." That about sums it up.5 points

This isn't the popular opinion, but at the root of all of this is religion. I am not anti-religion per se, and in actuality I am Atheist , but that doesn't mean I don't tolerate religion. I am of the opinion, you stay out of my business and I'll stay out of yours. You believe in what you want so long as you don't try to force me to think the same as you. Seems neither side can do this with any affect. I know many here have very strong beliefs in your religion, but I read a statement the other day that really stuck with me. Some have probably heard it before, but for me it rings true. I am sure others will disagree, but it at least made me think. “I contend we are both atheists, I just believe in one less god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours.†—Stephen F Roberts5 points

Yes, good to see liberal tolerance is still alive and well. Completely asinine. Every opinion counts, and stand up for what you believe... unless yours isn't popular. Then you get kicked off your own show.5 points

Reading the comments from around the web I am reminded of Romans 1. I've copied a few verses below, but you can see the progression of sin in these few verses. They didn't honor God and their thinking was corrupted, then they became idol worshipers and it continues on a progression until God gives them up. To me it is blatantly obvious we as a country are well down the path the Romans were on. Romans 1:21-28 ESV For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error. And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.4 points

After reading several articles on this subject, I believe this is little more than a publicity stunt pulled by A&E. The show has been on long enough, so the views of the cast can't possibly come as a surprise. I haven't watched the show, but I'm still well aware of their religious beliefs. I could be wrong, but I have a feeling, the show will go on.4 points
This was a setup and when Phil didn't say things in a bigotry enough like manner for them they chopped up and edited the film to suit their ends.
I've never watched the show, but when I heard about this that wash first thought as well. This was some kind of setup or publicity stunt by A&E. The man has an opinion. While I don't agree with him, he has as much right to his opinion and beliefs as I do my own. From what little I do know of the show, I think he's the type of guy that while he may hold that view, he could go get a cup of coffee with a gay guy and talk about something else and everybody get along just fine. I find it very hard to believe that A&E filmed four seasons of the show and they're just now being surprised by this. Heck, I've never seen the show and I'm not surprised that a series that espouses traditional Christian values didn't wave around a rainbow flag. You really mean to tell me y'all worked with this guy for years and this came out of nowhere? I don't buy it. I don't see it as a freedom of speech issue though. While he has a right to his opinion, he doesn't have the right to be on TV. Depending on how the contract is written, A&E may be well within what they're allowed to do by letting him go. I think it's a stupid decision for them to make, and I think it will bite them in the rear pretty quickly. I think it should. Nothing to do with rights, but there's no need to make pretend that we all live on some watered down world where everybody thinks the same way, and I'm tired of seeing folks try to do that. Let people be people.4 points

I promise you he is the same bible quoting, shotgun carrying, no desire for the Internet or even a cell phone person you see on the show. The shows, well they're skits the family has thought up, that's all. The "character" he plays, is just him, I honestly doubt he knows how to be anything else. I met him at an awards ceremony for the hunting show they had at the time. He was barefoot amongst a room of suits, ties, and camouflage. I'll stand beside Phil Robertson, as I wish I was nearly as close to The Lord as he is3 points

It's one thing to be opposed to/disagree with the homosexual lifestyle...many, including me, believe it's a sinful and immoral way of life. But holding that opinion is NOT, I don't believe, what has prompted the "castigation/name calling" you refer to (although I really don't think there has actually been much of that here). Where many draw the line is how some people respond to homosexuals as deserving or even especially deserving of revulsion and even outright hatred.3 points
-
Whoa, whoa, whoa.......So you're telling me that right wing, Christian ministers are AGAINST the gays??? Well, I don't know about y'all, but I for one am floored by this! :O3 points
-
Well I think there is a big difference between someone saying that homosexual acts are a sin, based upon one's religious beliefs, and saying that gays need to stay in the closet and out of the public eye. I don't like using the "homophobe" word because I do think that was something manufactured by the left in order to shame folks who don't hold their opinion, and that isn't a mature way to debate. I do think there are many people who are intolerant to the point they believe that gays shouldn't be open (I don't mean screaming queen open, I'm talking about just not being in the closet). I think there are many folks who hide behind the Bible because they find homosexuality to be repulsive and threatening to their way of life. That is way different than someone who simply believes something is a sin. We all sin, so believing acts of gayness are a sin isn't being intolerant, it's just being true to your beliefs. Of course, when you start calling folks out on those sins unsolicited it has gone beyond one's beliefs and now opens you up to everything that comes with such a debate. Like with most sins, we don't take every opportunity to call folks out on them.3 points

I'm going to bash some segments of our society and make it personal, regardless of the rules and political correctness because I have zero tolerance for arrogance and stupidity. Can you see my index finger extended straight out and pointing and my thumb 90 degrees vertical to it with my other three fingers curled in? Let's start with liberals, career politicians, the immoral and the people running this country into the ground. This just defies common sense and slaps our hero's and defenders in the face and all American's should be ashamed and embarrassed for just the mention of it. I speak of the proposal to cut our retired military veterans cost of living adjustments (COLA'S), pay and benefits, for putting their lives between U.S. and our enemies for 20+ years. How's that for a grateful nation? HO HUM... Let's hurry up and get to the sports results please. Where's America's outrage? A proposal was introduced in Washington to reduce / eliminate wasteful spending for lifetime welfare payments, assisted housing, free cell phones, affordable healthcare, etc.. Riots and chaos have broken out in every major city in America, hundreds of law suites have been filed on the un-constitutional aspect of "for the welfare of the people" clause. MSNBC, the Washington Post, New York Times among dozens of other media outlets are livid about the cruel, discrimatory and unjust action of our government. I take it personally when by force of law, the government takes a large portion of my labor and squanders and wastes it on worthless people, projects and programs. That would not even be possible without our military protecting our way of life and protecting our nation. The federal governments number one constitutional job is to defend this nation. To do so it takes a professional, well trained and loyal military, now they're degrading the service and sacrifice our veterans have given. Just the latest and another example of penalizing the productive and foundation of this country and rewarding the unproductive and scourge of our society I guess. That's my zero tolerance.2 points

Interesting side note - the original 1611 translation of the King James Bible included the apocryphal texts. This won't make sense to you unless you come from tradition where it matters, in which case you'll totally understand. A friend of mine sent me this in an email and as I read it this morning I realized how great a read it was and how it lifted me up while having my morning coffee. Hope ya'll enjoy it. THE BACK NINE I FIRST STARTED READING THIS EMAIL & WAS READING FAST UNTIL I REACHED THE THIRD SENTENCE. I STOPPED AND STARTED OVER READING SLOWER AND THINKING ABOUT EVERY WORD. THIS EMAIL IS VERY THOUGHT PROVOKING. MAKES YOU STOP AND THINK. READ SLOWLY! . . . AND THEN IT IS WINTER You know ... time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years. It seems just yesterday that I was young, just married and embarking on my new life with my mate. Yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all the years went. I know that I lived them all. I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams. But, here it is... the back nine of my life and it catches me by surprise...How did I get here so fast? Where did the years go and where did my youth go? I remember well seeing older people through the years and thinking that those older people were years away from me and that I was only on the first hole and the back nine was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like. But, here it is...my friends are retired and getting gray...they move slower and I see an older person now. Some are in better and some worse shape than me...but, I see the great change...Not like the ones that I remember who were young and vibrant...but, like me, their age is beginning to show and we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought we'd become. Each day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day! And taking a nap is not a treat anymore... it's mandatory! Cause if I don't on my own free will... I just fall asleep where I sit! And so...now I enter into this new season of my life unprepared for all the aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability to go and do things that I wish I had done but never did!! But, at least I know, that though Im on the back nine, and I'm not sure how long it will last...this I know, that when it's over on this earth...it's over. A new adventure will begin! Yes, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn't done...things I should have done, but indeed, there are many things I'm happy to have done. It's all in a lifetime. So, if you're not on the back nine yet...let me remind you, that it will be here faster than you think. So, whatever you would like to accomplish in your life please do it quickly! Don't put things off too long!! Life goes by quickly. So, do what you can today, as you can never be sure whether youre on the back nine or not! You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life...so, live for today and say all the things that you want your loved ones to remember...and hope that they appreciate and love you for all the things that you have done for them in all the years past!! "Life" is a gift to you. The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after. Make it a fantastic one. LIVE IT WELL! ENJOY TODAY! DO SOMETHING FUN! BE HAPPY ! HAVE A GREAT DAY Remember "It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver. LIVE HAPPY IN 2014! LASTLY, CONSIDER THIS: ~Your kids are becoming you......but your grandchildren are perfect! ~Going out is good.. Coming home is better! ~You forget names.... But it's OK because some people forgot they even knew you!!! ~You realize you're never going to be really good at anything like golf. ~The things you used to care to do, you aren't as interested in anymore, but you really do care that you aren't as interested. ~You sleep better on a lounge chair with the TV 'ON' than in bed. It's called "pre-sleep". ~You miss the days when everything worked with just an "ON" and "OFF" switch.. ~You tend to use more 4 letter words ... "what?"..."when?"... ??? ~You notice everything they sell in stores is "sleeveless"?!!! ~What used to be freckles are now liver spots. ~Everybody whispers. ~You have 3 sizes of clothes in your closet.... 2 of which you will never wear. ~~~But Old is good in some things: Old Songs, Old movies, and best of all, OLD FRIENDS!! Have Lived. TODAY IS THE OLDEST YOU'VE EVER BEEN, YET THE YOUNGEST YOU'LL EVER BE, SO ENJOY THIS DAY WHILE IT LASTS. Stay well, "OLD FRIEND!" I got mine yesterday. I got a 100 box of Hornady 9mm XTP in 115 grain and a pile of brass to load them in. The really cool thing is it was shipped in a Kellogg's box, which is who I work for. It also had two Pringles cans used for packing material, which is what we make. That made it a useful and hilarious gift. Thanks Santa!2 points

Mr. Robertson's own personal views, opinions, and preferences aside, this thread and the responses bring a couple of things to mind: 1) Any press is good press. Others have mentioned it. "suspended from filming" for one,... two episodes... until the next one begins filming? **or the end of the show is already planned,.. and they are concreting the family's connection with their fan base in order to maximize recurrant revenue streams. 2) As far as this show (and the contract, most likely) is concerned, Phil is not a person with an opinion, he is an actor playing character.... BUT since he is playing himself, he is a character ... which is a commodity. Phil's "role" on that show is a commodity with a variable value. Whatever the reason, it is not as simple as "how could they do that to him!?" ... or "those hypocrites". This show, whatever deal they were given, whatever deal they re-negotiated, it was never about "fair" or "respect for personal beliefs". Most likely, the show came about because of a perceived (later confirmed) market value. That was and has always been the bottom line. Whatever you/our personal beliefs, big business has never cared. ever.2 points

As well they should if they don't pull their heads out of their rears and put Phil back on his show. They built a show and an entire brand around a certain type of family culture. This worldview is more than unsurprising, it should have been expected. I don't even watch the show and I think this is all silly as hell.2 points

I strongly don't agree with his views either, but this kind of crap pisses me off. A&E knew exactly where he stands and how his family feels and now they're all of a sudden the moral authority and shocked. Bull####. I would love to see all other family members refuse to tape the show. Just as much as I support gays to say what they believe, I support him to say what he believes even if I don't agree with it. I would tell A&E to pound sand. A&E has made millions off of their family and way of life (including their religious beliefs) and now I hope they lose millions.2 points
