  3. You may have heard on the news about a Southern California man who was put under 72-hour psychiatric observation when it was found he owned 100 guns and allegedly had 100,000 rds. of ammunition stored in his home. The house also featured a secert escape tunnel.   By Southern Ca. standards, someone owning 100,00 rds. is considered "mentally unstable."   In Illinios he would be in jail or the Chicago Mayor's bodyguard.   In Michigan, he'd be called "the last white guy still livin in Detroit."   In Arizona, he'd be called "an avid gun collector."   In Arkansas, he'd be called "a novice gun collector."   In Utah, he'd be called"moderately well prepared," but they'd probably reserve judgement until they made sure that he had a corrreponding quanity of stored food.   In Kansas, he'd be "a guy down the road you would want for a friend."   In Montana, he'd be called "the neighborhood 'Go-To' guy."   In Alabama, he'd be called "a likely GOP gubernational candidate."   In Georgia, he'd be called " an eligible bachelor."   In North Carolina, Virginia, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, & South Carolina, he would be called "a deer hunting buddy."   And in Texas he'd just be " The neighbor Bubba who's a little short on ammo."

As far as the boy regretting shooting the bad guy, I think by the death of his father by a robber bad guy he might feel more vindicated for his fathers death that bad about shooting the bad guy. At least hope it has not lasting bad feels by the boy. He was protecting his grandmother and himself.................jmho

  10. My guess is that it's a political move by Gwyn... Gwyn was appointed by Bredesen, who evidently saw to it that partisan politics were, indeed, a part of the TBI...  This one will be interestin to watch... An appointed "public servant" callin out a duly elected DA looks like a real bad move to me; from a bunch of directions.... My guess is that Gwyn has no authority to do what he threatened to do...   leroy

  13. I would argue you can't get the same outdoorsiness without taking the shot.  You haven't had that rush of adrenaline and nerves waiting to get and take that shot.  Hunting is not just about about going to sit in a stand with a gun, or bow, or muzzleloader and waiting for some animal to walk by.  Hunting for many of us is a year round love.  It's about learning the areas you hunt, putting in the work to build food plots, or if you can't do that, scouting areas to give yourself the best chance of a successful hunt.  The difference in a "successful" hunt means many different things to many different people.  For some, it is shooting a doe for the meat, for others it is about trophy's, and in my view for real sportsman, it is about wildlife management.    I think what you need to do is get with someone who can help you have a more broad 'hunting experience".   I think everyone needs to do a good stalk hunt as for me that is true hunting, but I realize that it takes some land to do that. I realize it isn't easy to start on your own, especially if you don't have your own land to really get involved with.  I can see where it is boring for someone who has never hunted and just goes out and sits in a stand with little to no prep, expects they will get a chance to shoot something, and then see nothing.  Hunting takes time and effort.  For me, hunting is about the work before the seasons,  the chase, the adrenalin rush, and the enjoyment of being outdoors.  The last thing on my mind while hunting is the cost.  In fact, I would argue that for the hours spent, hunting for me is one of the cheapest hobbies I have per hour of enjoyment.    What I get annoyed with is people who say everything is too expensive.  I guess I am fortunate and not worried about my next meal, so maybe it doesn't affect me as much, but this as with many things is about priorities.  A lot of the same people who complain about the cost of hunting are paying $100/month for a cell phone so they can play Candy Crush.  If you are truly poor and are doing this to feed your family, I wouldn't even mind a special license available to those who can prove the need.  One can certainly save money if they butcher their own deer.  It isn't hard, but I don't think these are the people complaining.  It is the ones who want to hunt to say they have hunted, but don't realize the commitment it takes to be successful.  I will leave the cost of a gun out of it as I think even some of the poorest people out there have a gun.  I don't know a single redneck who doesn't have some rifle.   For less than $50/year they can shoot a crap load of deer compared to most states and if they process themselves (which I am sure all truly poor people do), there is a huge cost savings.     The TWRA is one of the few State organizations where the money stays with them.  While I may not agree with every decision they make, I do believe they are trying to do their best to conserve wildlife in a responsible manner.  It takes money to do that.   I consider my license fee a donation to help them do their job.  For the enjoyment I get out of hunting, it's easy for me to say $135/yr for a Sportsman License is a deal.

  17. From a recent trade I got this M+M Industries Romanian manufactured AK imported by M+M, Inc. directly from Romania, the M10 rifles are manufactured from all new "high quality" components (its a WASR with newer parts IMO) . The marking on the front trunnion denotes the built unit in 2011. The rifles exceed ATF minimum 922R, U.S. made parts compliance requirements. It does have a cold hammer forged barrel with chrome lined bore and chamber which is nice. Lots of tool marks inside and out but the mag well was CNC machined rather than dremeled like a lot of WASR's. My steel mags fit with no wiggle and feed fine. The front sight is attached to the gas block so sight radius is shorter than a standard AK and it has an RPK windage/elevation adjustable rear sight which makes no difference to me as my aging eyes can't see the darn things anyway. It also has a nice Tapco G2 trigger which was stock on the rifle. It also has a Magpul MOE pistol grip with the little compartment handy for storing firing pins and batteries for your red dot. There are many AK's out there but this one is mine! :woohoo:

  19.   For the past seven years, everytime I turn on talk radio or the news, we are just "six months" from chaos. Seven years. Meanwhile, people can continue to wait for the government to "save us all" from the collapse and "crumbling" infrastructure, but that hasn't happened, and will not happen. We can vote "them" out all we want, but in the end, the government will continue to line the pockets of the ruling class and do nothing to help anyone else. That's what all governments have stood for since the first group of people discovered they could rule others.

  22. You want the bullet to leave the muzzle at the time when the muzzle diameter is changing at the slowest rate. It's helpful to understand Dan's paper, but not totally necessary. Fact is, seating depth matters more than how much "jump" you have, assuming that you are shooting low runout ammo. You can use some math and set some practical limits on your test loads, or you can just shoot your way through it. As has already been mentioned, jamming the lands comes with a spike in pressure.

  25.   I agree.  Granted, I don't have a lot of disposable income, and $135 (or potentially $166) is something that I have to 'budget' for each year.  However, it is something that provides ROI in my annual budget.  It puts 4-5 self-butchered deer in the freezer, which at a direct cost (excluding sunk costs like rifle, truck, gas spent, etc. - which would be expended anyway) of about $0.66/lb at 4-5 deer and about $1.22/lb at 2-3 (roughly) is frankly cheaper and more fun than beef.  Not to mention the 3-4 turkeys a year, many shellcracker/bream, multiple trout, rabbits, squirrels, etc.   Others have likened it to a 'progressive tax,' and I don't exactly agree.  It's more of an access or 'user' fee much like trash pickup in municipalities.  Some cities have solid waste pickup that is part of their general fund (property tax driven) and some have a monthly flat fee.  The flat fee is most fair, because for 96 gallons of trash per week each resident (regardless of income level) pays $17/mo.  Same volume trash, same fee.  Under the property tax driven, general fund model the guy in the $500K McMansion pays more to have his 96 gallons of refuse picked up than the guy in the $75K mini-ranch....unfair to the guy that has done well for himself.  And there are income-based relief programs out there.   With that said, I would be willing to pay $200/year for a sportsman license with the provision that free doe-only (say limit of 4/year) and small game/fishing licenses be provided to low income families with a limit of 3 free accesses in 5 years (or some other rational limit) based on household income levels.  They could even check 'em in on their Obamaphone.  'Course the administration costs for the program would have fiscal note attached.

  27. For those who don't know Sony global lost and is continuing to lose b/c they miscalculated the risk of poorly implemented IT security. Instead of weighing the value of the data held and it's worth to the business, they weighed things like the "estimated cost of a breach" and determined proper security wasn't worth the cost to implement. Worse still, their sister company Sony Online Entertainment has had MULTIPLE large breaches of consumer credit information as a prior example of how bad a mistake this choice was and was given a few years in between to fix it!   "The cost to harden the legacy database against a possible intrusion could come to $10 million, he says. The cost to notify customers in case of a breach might be $1 million. With those figures, says Spaltro, “it’s a valid business decision to accept the risk” of a security breach. “I will not invest $10 million to avoid a possible $1 million loss,” he suggests."   Heck, that's not even newsworthy, the shortsightedness of this stance was even pointed out in the 2007 article's next paragraph.   "That reasoning is “shortsighted,” argues Ari Schwartz, a privacy expert at the Center for Democracy and Technology. The cost of notification is only a small part of the potential cost to a company. Damage to the corporate brand can be significant."     Source- http://www.cio.com/article/2439324/risk-management/your-guide-to-good-enough-compliance.html

  29. au contraire, mon ami.   They have been doing this for years.  Use "mules" too.    It is a major "black-market" there.   I saw a extensive documentary made by a Chinese group actually doing it.  The hidden camera video was pretty cool around checkpoints and border cross-overs. It's a game of "cat & mouse"   They use lots of battery powered stuff, and memory sticks.

  38. The Bushmaster rifle is a tool . I have one and it is just as much a tool as my Craftsman ratchet. I use my Craftsman and I use my Bushmaster. If I go and crack my neighbor's skull , killing him with the Craftsman , why should there be any difference ? $ucking idiots is all I have to say . I use a Bushmaster at work along with other tools that keep the public and myself safe . These idiots that are suing have lost their ever-living mind in my opinion. They make no sense . If my loved one got killed by Bushmaster or anything else that did not malfunction and was used BY THE OPERATOR as in this case , I would not sue the maker. People in this day and age have lost all common sense PERIOD .

  39. The driver consented to a search. This case probably would not have gone this far had he not done that. Don’t drive around with a broken taillight when you are drug trafficking. Sounds to me what the Officer did was a standard practice prior to this case. There have been a ton of court rulings that if the Officer made a mistake, but it was in good faith; the case goes forward. The word “unreasonable” is in the 4th amendment; it was put there for a reason. The Officer had permission to search and what he stopped the vehicle for he thought (and may well be) was a violation.   Here is the law...

  42.   I received my gift today and words cannot express how much I appreciate the lengths my Secret Santa, and his helper, went through to find me a perfect gift. I was honestly at a loss for words upon reading the letter. Caring enough to to do what you did on my behalf is humbling. I am sure it was not easy to find me the perfect gift but you did and I truly appreciate it more than words can say. And I can honestly say that anyone who would do what you guys did, and give me the gift you did, is a true friend. I want you guys to know that if there is ever anything you need please feel free to ask.     And for those of you who are wondering what my Secret Santa gave me, they gave me money. But what they gave me was more than just money. They also wrote a heartfelt letter, that made this gift very, very personal. And cash allows me to buy the perfect gift which, in the end, is all my, or any, Secret Santa wants for the person getting the gift.   In closing I would like to say thanks. Thanks to my Secret Santa for giving me the perfect gift and a personal letter. I would like to say thanks to Metalhead for putting this on. I would also like to thank TGO David for providing us with a place for our TGO family to come together, share our lives , our stories as well as the highs, and the lows, with other members of our TGO family.
