  1. This is our son, and his lovely wife, winning not one but two awards during his recent Air Force leadership academy. We are so proud of our son. Only 2% win the Academic Excellence but on top of that he also won the Distinguished Graduate award. His Academic Excellence award was for having the highest academic scores of two training flights, 30 students. The Distiguished Graduate award is given to the Airman who displayed outstanding leadership during the course as voted by his peers. He is, and always will be, my hero.

  2. I see a lot of this sort of stuff in my line of work. My advice to you would be, always keep your cool. Don't think you have to prove your manhood, no need to escalate things. Sure, he struck your car with his hand and that probably made you mad. Let it go. When you strap on that pistol, you've got to learn to be humble and very forgiving. I probably missed something , but I never got the impression you were in fear of your life in your situation.  As Jonnin pointed out, if your car is close enough that he can touch it, the other guy might have had a real concern about the proximity. Personally, I like to make eye contact with a driver before I'll walk behind a car like that, especially if I have a kid or wife in tow. While it sounds like you did the right thing, just remember there are always two sides to every story.  I'll play devils advocate here. Let's say he gets on TGO when he gets home and posts this:    "Just about had to pull on a guy. I'm still shaking. I have Parkinsons and it's hard to walk straight sometimes. I was in the parking lot at Rural King walking my grandson to the store when this jackass almost backed over us. I slapped the rear of his car to make him stop and he started swearing at me. Words were exchanged and he threatened to get out of the car and whip my ass. I'm pretty sure he had something in the car with him. He seemed all pissed off for no reason. When it was over he squealed off and almost hit two other cars. Started to call the cops but my grandson was already pretty upset. This guy is lucky he didn't try to get out of that car is all I can say. I'd hate to shoot someone over something this stupid especially in front of my grandson."   See how easy it is to make you the bad guy here? It's not worth losing everything financially or otherwise over words in a parking lot. If two guys try to car jack you or rob you in the parking lot, that's a whole other game, but something like you experienced was just simply not worth going to jail or spending every penny you have to defend yourself in court. Glad it turned out okay for you.

  3. The moment you strap on a weapon, you have to adopt the mindset of being the one to deescalate a situation - up to and even past the point of personal affront.     It's just not worth it.

  5. While I agree that one must keep one's cool as much as possible when carrying I don't know that there is never room for getting upset.  Based on what the OP said, I think of numbskulls in the Walmart parking lot, for example, who have their heads so far up their butts that they can see their own hearts beating, sometimes just wandering around in la-la land and, more often than not, with their cellphone to their ear as if it is surgically grafted there.  These idiots will walk past a vehicle (say a full sized van) without even looking to see if the next vehicle - the driver of which could not possible see them coming until they are actually behind that driver's vehicle unless said driver had Superman's x-ray vision - and then act like it is the driver's fault that he/she doesn't have ESP and the ability to read what little mind the numbskull has to know that said numbskull is about to pull such a numbskull move.  In a similar situation, I probably wouldn't have dropped an F-bomb but there is a very good chance, carrying or not, that I would suggest that the numbskull in question should remove his head from his butt and pay attention to where he was walking and to whether or not drivers would be able to see them before it was too late.  As a driver I try to pay attention to everything but sometimes it is simply impossible to see someone coming in a parking lot when there is a vehicle parked next to you that completely obstructs your view.  As a pedestrian, I try to keep that in mind and actually pay attention to my surroundings.  After all, in a conflict between a pedestrian and a vehicle it is the pedestrian and not the driver who will be a greasy spot on the pavement.

  11. Thanks for the explanations.          Yep.  That's what happens when a game becomes a sport.        Walk throughs are one thing I've never really understood about IDPA.  If the whole idea is to improve your defensive pistol skills, doesn't a walk through largely defeat the purpose?  If you don't see and consequently don't neutralize a target, aren't you dead?  I understand there are guns involved and you can't just let people run around all willy nilly, but it seems like giving the shooters the number of targets and rounds they're expected to fire is way too much information.

  13. The Brownells series is pretty straightforward.  For building a lower, you want #42-50 on this playlist. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLa6yB5pDvYiiR1KVxS1yrjYr9u9SL31RL     They aren't kidding about all those parts.  I had a detent pin go airborne when I put together my lower.  I was on hands and knees for a few minutes looking for it.

  14.   +1. Plus they're not trying to have a gun show or show off new products. They're looking for serious people to fill highly sought after job positions. That would be pretty hard to do with "Bubba" hanging out at the LGS talking bull about brand "X". Beretta's the oldest company in the world that's still in existence & has been building firearms for 500 years. I'd say they know a thing or two about how to run a business.

  17. WHY?  Constant phone, tablet and desktop updates.  CONSTANTLY.   Every time I turn around, update this, update that.  The damn Playstation needs an update. Oh, now the phone needs another one.  Nope, iTunes won't work anymore until you let us screw it all up and make you learn to use a totally different layout. WTF could POSSIBLY need so much fixing?  If that ain't bad enough, WHY do they have to rearrange stuff every few months?  Just about the time I get used to the layout of my web browser, the update rearranges the location of all the functions.  Is there really a legitimate reason for this?  This thread need not devolve into an indictment of my own assbackward stupidity and unwillingness to accept change [but it will, and that's cool  ]   Can any of you REALLY give one single LEGITIMATE reason why?  I doubt it.

  19. I could have used some spare parts last build I helped a buddy with. We were installing a Magpul PRS and it just didn't wanna go that last inch onto the buffer tube. I turned around to get a tool and he started twisting and pushing at the same time and nearly sheared off his takedown detent spring. Luckily it only deformed it and we were able to flip it around the other direction until he got a replacement pin.       Don't you hate it when somebody says "you always find it in the last place you look"?

  31. Most of the "scenes" I've witnessed are due to one of two things. They either think they are better than others (ego problem) or its to attempt to make up for shooting poorly. Either way it's a lose-lose situation and all that comes from it is damage to the sport and fellow competitors. Nothing makes a person new to competitive shooting want to come back and play again like witnessing someone acting stupid because they think they are entitled to... Let your shooting speak for you, and if you have a bad day (which we all tank stages/matches at some point) take it as a learning and training opportunity to get better.

  38. Guys I am not going to mess around here, so listen up:   -- There exists NO retail operation that hasn't let someone down, pissed someone off, or otherwise dissatisfied at least one customer.   -- The Internet makes it entirely possible for one unhappy person to malign a business to financially damaging degrees, just because they have an axe to grind.   -- The retail public these days (you and ME) can be some of the most ungrateful, demanding, whiney-assed babies any of us have ever seen.  What seems like no big deal to 9/10 people may be the end of the damn world for that 10th guy and then he starts grinding that axe (See point 2 above).       When it comes to complaining about not being recognized with a smile, or thinking a gun was priced too high, or ammo was too scarce, or someone didn't stroke your fur the right way, really that is all SUBJECTIVE to the person doing the griping.  But for some reason, misery loves company on the Internet and people are all too happy to jump into the dog-pile and ruin the reputation of a business and hurt the finances of the PEOPLE working at, reliant upon, and owning those businesses.   I'm really just sick of it.   And more importantly, when it comes to a paying vendor who SPONSORS this site, I just am not going to allow it.   If you have a legitimate beef with a sponsor of TGO, take it up with them privately.  If you think a sponsor poses a significant risk to the physical or financial well-being of the TGO members at large, present your case to ME PRIVATELY and I will consider it and take action if it is warranted.   But if you're just sour that someone had an item you wanted, at a price you weren't willing to pay... put on your big boy pants and realize that life isn't fair and a business can charge whatever they want.  It's capitalism, baby!  It's what makes America awesome.         Jeez frickin Louise!!!   Can't even have a nice thread congratulating two of our local shops on becoming an even bigger operation to serve the local shooters.  We've gotta sit around and figure out how we can eat our own.

  39. I've carried a pocket knife as long as I can remember. Cheaper is ok but if you can skip it. I use mine a lot and the cheaper ones like SOG wear out quickly. If you want heavy duty the ZT knives are great. If your new to sharpening I would avoid the recurve type blades, I find them harder to sharpen with a regular stone. A Protech will be my next purchase. Have heard only great things about their products and company. Everyone else is giving great advice too. Just pick one and buy it. It will not be your last. :)

  40. Good job Kenneth, you shot a good match. Stick with me and I'll show you how to do some really stupid sh@t at majors lol.

  41. Quite a few differences in the details betwixt the pair. The Match has a full 5" pipe, I think the other is 4.5" or 4.75". Sights, trigger, hammer, etc are all different. This new (older) gun is a real steel frame I believe. The match is aluminum. Though the match is the longer gun, the steel frame makes the shorter gun heavier overall. I bet it may shoot even more softly. It also has 3 dot sights, which I prefer to the all-black sights on the match. Unfortunately I have a busy weeks ahead. It'll probably be mid-July before I get to shoot them side by side. :/

  44. In accordance with my firm conviction that sometimes the only way a man can keep his self respect is to pin a big piece of mistletoe on his shirt tail and walk right down the middle of the street for all to see, I bought a Confederate flag this morning. I guess that's my gentlemanly way of dropping my drawers and showing the bas....ds what to kiss.
