  2. Welp, scientists say that our sun is going to expand as it turns into a red giant, and consume several of the planets including earth. Personally, I don't think man will be around in 5 million years. Too many liberals around to make it that far.

  3. Were it a 243, I would think a .223 bullet would drop freely down the barrel. I expect it is a .223 bore from your picture. There are many .223 chamberings, but a 22-250 would be a good first guess.

  6. While on the road in Alabama, I stopped in at Hoover Tactical... I had just started my research into the world of semi auto .308 rifles, so was just looking. Ended up with walking out with an HK91 When I saw it, I assumed it was a PTR91 or Century C308; both of which I've handled at Bud's and wasn't a fan. Salesman says, "it's a real one." "A real one what?" "Not a clone or kit, it's nice, here, check it out." I agonized over the decision and justified through, "they ain't making them anymore, they are desirable, it should appreciate, and I know a guy who would probably sell one of his damaged kidneys if I had to sell in a pinch." It's LNIB, except for some marring around the election port. Round count has to be low, there is still finish on the tip of the firing pin and breech face shows no wear. There is little noticeable wear on the metal on metal bits that slide. Came with the test fire docs, dated 10 Nov 1980, unused cleaning kit, manual, shell deflector (? - it's the part in the pic below the stock) sling and 6 mags. Spent way more than I had budgeted, I thought a Springfield M1A variant was iny future. I think I need a bipod.

  9. None. I usually keep an extra mag in the car. If I let myself get into something one mag won’t get me out of; I’m hosed…. hasta la vista

  10. No I let my buddy make the sausage, I'll usually make pork chops and frying meat outta a couple hogs. Then take a couple to my buddy and have the whole thing made in sausage. Then when the meat gets low get back out and kill a few.

  12. Link to YouTube Video Here's CJ, one of the students, running the 4+1 Transition Drill with a Tac14 in 20ga. I like this drill because it has many layers to it. The shooter starts at gunbox/cruiser ready and has to get the gun into action. Then they hit both outside targets (long transitions), both inside targets (more transitions), and ends with an emergency load to the center target. With only five rounds, we are practicing numerous skills. One issue with 20ga shotguns for defensive use is that there is not, in my opinion, a quality defensive buckshot load available for them. One must account for every pellet sent downrange, and quite frankly, I have yet to find a 20ga load with a good enough pattern beyond 7-10 yards to use with confidence. Here are pics of a Rio (I know) load I asked CJ to test in his gun. I didn't get pics of the Winchester Super X load he also tested, but it was worse. One round was fired at seven and 15 yards with three rounds fired at 25 yards. Note how many pellets are outside of the body of this large silhouette. For comparison, here is the same test shot with Federal 8-pellet reduced recoil FliteControl: I also ran the same test with some Federal "black pack" 9-pellet 00 buck. It held it's own out to 15 yards, but at 25 I had a pellet off of the body and several outside of the effective zones.

  15. Exactly. Just because it's unlikely doesn't mean it won't or can't happen, especially with the sudden idiocy one can encounter in public nowadays. The "average" gunfight is two or three shots at six feet or whatever. If this is actually a calculated figure, that means some gunfights were more than two or three shots. If you believe the "experts", all you need is a j-frame with two rounds in the cylinder and be able to hit a pie plate at five feet

  17. Got it figured out with the help of an old friend. Its a 22-250. Thanks for the thoughts and help. Not the 280 i had planned for but a fun round nonetheless. And cheaper to shoot! Will probably let the wife and kids take it over .

  20. Got the black manual. Like it so far but it is much larger (thicker) than I expected. It makes the Protech TR4 seem small and svelte. Which is no easy thing to do. I don’t think I could break it if I tried.

  22. Just like the Supreme Court, they aren't there to make laws. That is job of Congress. The BATF doesn't have any authority to make "laws". And unless I am a complete moron their suggestions are just that.

  23. My son said his banker told him this "coin shortage" was a bunch of bull. He said it is all part of "the" plan to quit using currency and going to "the chip", no credit cards, no currency, just a chip or "NO SOUP FOR YOU". Truth or not I do not know. Just passing it along. I guess when people refuse the chip and they won't take the money, I don't know what folks with hungry children would do, but I have a really good idea!!

  24. Maybe, maybe not. Statistical likelihood and Lord willing, I will never find out. That doesn’t stop me from training and preparing for that moment. I’m not willing to have already given up beforehand if that moment comes. I take the steps that I find reasonable, you do you.

  25. I feel like this is a point where I should throw out the primary reason for carrying a single spare mag isn’t for a lengthy gun fight, but to fix malfunctions.

  33. Safe to assume it’s some sort of custom gun with no markings whatsoever? Edit to add: If you think it’s .30-06 based, I would look more at .22-250 or .25-06

  38. Both sides of Congress love letting the government agencies have a wide operating latitude. It lets them rail for or against their administrative moves, all while sidestepping the burden of actual oversight and responsibility, because that's hard, plus it cuts into time better spent fundraising or developing relationships that will land someone a sweet lobbying job after they retire from the legislature.

  40. In all of those listed, as with California, I would agree only inasmuch as they all contain specific cities which are the problem. Chicago is a hole, but Effingham, Mount Vernon, or the multitude of cities not in Chiraq metro, not so much. Same goes for Cali, WA, OR and believe it or not, even NJ. Keep that in mind as Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville, and Chattanooga drive us over the edge to get lumped into the same category as all the states you listed.

  43. It depends... For most days going about my business as a private citizen I carry 1 spare G17 mag just forward of my non dominant side hip. For church security duty I carry 2. When talking about shootings in the criminal assault paradigm the odds are exponentially overwhelming that whatever happens will most likely be over one way or the other well before the ammo in my first mag is expended. Obviously the lower the capacity the more your mileage may vary. Since I am not tasked on an everyday basis with laying hands on and taking people into custody that don't want to be taken into custody there is very little on a daily basis that compels me to stay and fight. In the typical civilian encounters where someone approaches and produces a weapon to coerce you to give up your wallet or to go somewhere with them, you presenting a gun and shooting at them (whether you hit them or not) generally tends to create an unscheduled track meet with them running as fast as they can away from you .....and you often running the opposite direction...assuming they are not killed outright. The odds of you even having the time to reload before it is over is unlikely. If the "typical civilian street gunfight" last 3-4 seconds from guns coming out to end of shooting there just isn't much time for a reload in there. John Correia (Active Self Protection) has watched over 15,000 civilian gunfights on video from security cameras worldwide and I have been an attendee at the presentation he does at various training conferences. He says that in all the video he has watched there is almost never a reload accomplished before the bad guys either stop or have run away....especially when people are reloading from their pockets. We watched one of those videos in his presentation where the defender reloaded from a pocket. It took a timed 15 seconds to access the mag and complete the reload. The bad guy was probably 2 blocks away before the guy got the gun up and running again. John goes as far as to saying since he carries a hi cap gun he has stopped carrying a spare mag and carries pepper spray in its place. I have long preferred to carry both because while pepper spray can be very useful it cannot help me clear a malfunction that requires a new mag to make the gun work. So I generally carry a spare mag and pepper spray. The church security paradigm is a little different. We may well be facing a dedicated and prepared opponent for whom self preservation is not their overriding concern. In fact they probably EXPECT to die during the event. In that case it may well take more hits and they may possibly have to be delivered from much longer distances to stop him than would be likely in the typical street criminal mugging/assault . We may be engaging someone who is using cover and we might have to use gunfire to "pin him in place " while a maneuvering element closes with him to render him neutralized. That type of thing has virtually no commonality with the typical civilian use of force. So for church security duty I err on the side of caution and carry a second spare mag.
