  4. LOL, My goal is to have so many cool knives with our logo on them that it makes the Knife forums I belong to jealous, for a gun forum to do that would be quite impressive I would think

  5. From what I've seen in recent years, you probably get a better education through home schooling.  At least someone cares about your education.  You would, though, miss out on the liberal indoctrination that occurs in much of the public system.  I know there are many public school teachers that do care about their students, and that's probably why they're teachers, but I still see a lot of young HS graduates without basic math and reading skills.

  10. Great Weekend !! A balding white haired man from Naples, Florida walked into a jewelry store this past Friday evening with a beautiful, much younger gal at his side. He told the jeweler he was looking for a special ring for his girlfriend. The jeweler looked through his stock and brought out a $5,000 ring. The man said, 'No, I'd like to see something more special.' At that statement, the jeweler went to his special stock and brought another ring over. 'Here's a stunning ring at only $40,000, the jeweler said. The lady's eyes sparkled and her whole body trembled with excitement. The old man seeing this said, 'We'll take it.' The jeweler asked how payment would be made and the man stated, 'By check. I know you need to make sure my check is good, so I'll write it now and you can call the bank Monday to verify the funds, and I'll pick the ring up Monday afternoon.' On Monday morning, the jeweler angrily phoned the old man and said: 'There's no money in that account.' 'I know,' said the old man…. 'But let me tell you about MY WEEKEND!!!'

  13. go with the metal.  it will last longer.  i grew up in a house with a tin roof.  my dad grew up in the same house with the same roof.  the house is still standing at the farm with the same roof.  does not leak.  the last time it had any paint on it was on 1970.  so it does not look good now.  it is rust color.  i was up on it last week and it is still solid.  so the metal roof over the old roof is the way to go.  they got several colors now that will make your house look good.  a there is nothing like sleeping in a house with a tin roof when it is raining.

  14. Of course, IANAL but I doubt very highly anyone makes an issue with it. Aside from the possibility that it is department property (and even then I would be willing to bet money they would approve wholeheartedly) I can't see it being any kind of legal issue unless you try using it in a manner that would lead a reasonable person to believe you were acting in a LE capacity. I think that's an excellent way to remember your friend. Sorry for your loss.

  20. Channel 5 News Investigates did a report about this sometime back and did some interviewing with some of the street corner beggars and I was shocked t see how honest most of them were. They spoke with a couple guys that actually admitted that they make more money per day just asking for money than many people do working an 8 hours day. There was a few of them that have made it their life work and have developed a system of rotating locations so same people don't see them everyday. They move around to a select set of street corners by riding the city bus and when asked where they sleep and eat they say, the Mission or one of the homeless shelters. 3 different guys admitted they can make as much as 150.00 to 200.00 a day.  i had to laugh at one guy that I use to see on a street corner. He would hold a sign that said Vietnam vet, please help. I finally asked him one day how he was doing and he said I don't do well at all and don't know why. I said let me help you out. Find some new cardboard and make you a  new sign that says Desert Storm Vet needs help. He said why would that help and I told him because son, you were not even born when the Vietnam war was going on so how can you be a Vet from it. He looked at me and said gosh sir thanks and he walked away. I figure if he is going to make a living bumming he should at least be good at it..... :2cents:

  21. I would go with metal if possible. When i shop for anything involving a warranty, I buy the one with the longest warranty, not for the warranty but it will likely be built better, no manufacturer wants warranty claims.

  23. I see very little difference between this and someone on a bicycle. They're both road hazards.   Just the other day, in downtown Nashville, I was on Broadway turning left onto 12th Avenue (by the McDonalds), and out of the corner of my left eye, I saw an IDIOT on a very expensive bike (in full biking regalia) who was passing between me and the car waiting at the light on 12th. He almost got his clock cleaned, and I sat down on the horn. No acknowledgement that he had done anything wrong. I had my window down and when he turned left on the next street, I let him know what I thought about it.   Flippin' moron.

  25. I bought a air soft pistol for my daughter last year to teach her the firearms fundamentals. She liked it and did well with the safety concerns so I picked her up a SR22 this week off Arms List. The first shot was dead center from 15 ft. You could not wipe the smile off her face. After the first mag. she said " wow that was fun" we spent the next half hour working on stance and the trigger reset. She is hooked.

  27.   I don't feel dumb. I know so little about knives that I really don't even know what questions to ask.   The one thing I do know for a fact is that seeing that first knife posting you did is causing me a great deal of money that could be going to bang bang stuff instead.

  31. Not this again. Let me say that my wife teaches 3rd grade. This year she has a group of kids that refuse to learn anything. They won't even try. Their parents do not care. Almost all of these families receive benefits paid for by me and probably you. Nothing has motivated this group. They most probably will not be held back because that not allowed so much by the State of TN Dept. of Ed. All we are doing is raising another generation of worthless beings who will grow up and their job will be to apply for and receive free stuff from the ever dwindling number of responsible US citizens. Every year these kids get worse and every year there are more give away programs.

  32. I think the key to metal roofing is to ensure you have enough screws, especially around the edges. And then use the correct screws that have gaskets without over tightening the screws. My wife and I installed our own roof over the course of a few days. It wasn't easy but it wasn't that difficult either. The only time we have had a leak is when we hired a contractor to add an addition to our house. That area leaked like a sieve 2-3 times until they got it fixed.

  38. I'm still trying to get a grasp on the convoluted warranties. I haven't had a chance to get online to read the fine print, but it's beginning to appear as if the warranties are a bit more useless than they'd like you to believe. Both shingle samples claim "lifetime warranty". The CertainTeed sample states 10 year SureStart Protection, 10 year StreakFighter Warranty, 130 MPH Wind Warranty. The GAF Timberline board goes into much less detail; only mentioning a Lifetime Roofing System Warranty. Based on the little research I've had time to do, the warranties are only valid if you use a roofer who's been certified through the specific manufacturer, and specific materials are used during the installation. I'm obviously not an expert, but I don't recall ever seeing roofers use anything other than tar paper and shingles. I think both of these shingle manufacturers require the use of multiple layers of specific barrier protection products to be used if you want to take advantage of the warranties.

  41.   A lot of 'charities' take subsidies from the government. Guess where the government gets the money for those subsidies? That's right, us!    The problem I have with that is that I don't have a choice as to how much I give or where it goes. In my perfect world, the government would hand out zero subsidies and I could keep my money to give as I see fit. That's how it should be. Taking taxpayer money just to redistribute it, in my mind, leaves less money in the hands of citizens who could and would otherwise use it for good things, like stimulating the economy or giving to charities.   Plus, if the charities knew they had to work harder to get citizen's money instead of from the government, maybe they would use it more efficiently.

  43. As mentioned by others, the bolt/carrier parts will wear out faster... Particularly the bolt itself at the lugs and cam pin hole... and the cam pin itself. Also, the carrier might be more prone to tilt, or the gas key could loosen. Plus, there will be more felt recoil because the bolt-carrier is being slammed rearward while there is significant chamber pressure. Could arguably wear out your buffer spring faster. The lightest recoiling ARs are those with stock weight springs and a light buffer, with the gas turned down so it just has enough to cycle... Those of us with intentionally overgassed guns compensate with higher tension buffer springs and heavier buffers to slow the action down and reduce recoil, while keeping a margin of power for reliability even when the gun is dirty. The idea is to balance the forces, whether high gas and high mass/spring tension, or low gas and standard parts. The choice depends on whether the gun will be a safe queen powder puff target rifle or something you may fight with. ..oh yeah, and more gas means the bolt carrier gets hotter, will burn off lube faster (of it's not a piston gun)

  45. If you have any reason to believe someone is already in your house (in which case you failed to have adequate security measures in place), you immediately get yourself and any loved ones to the safest place possible (such as a barricaded locked room behind proper cover), and then arm any adults that are properly trained / equipped, and then call 911. Inform them of your address, describe the situation (including location / description of all family members, and who is armed), and you wait on the phone while guarding your safe room entrance(s). You don't go searching the house looking for trouble, and you don't leave family members unprotected. You also don't go outside or move through the house unless you can establish it is safe to do so, as additional or unknown threats may be waiting. If a threat emerges or advances near your safe room, you call out loudly that you are armed and will shoot to defend yourself if needed, ordering them to leave immediately, and that police are on the way. If the threat persists or escalates then you do only what is necessary to defend your lives, not to protect property or chase them out or advance on them or capture them.

  47. Have you tried out a Beretta Cougar (now marketed & built in Beretta's Stoeger faciltiy in Turkey)? IMO they have better ergonomics than the 92 models & are more fun to shoot. They're still a metal gun with some heft, but are a bit more compact with slighty smaller grips. They're also available in 9mm, 357sig, .40 & .45 acp. 92FS & Beretta Cougar 8000 (9mm)
