  1. Curse that evidence based learning. That didn't work at all like I had planned...

  2. I think everyone just needs to pretend to be an adult. If you're so dogmatic that you can't stomach a dissenting opinion either ignore or block the thread. Man up guys.

  3. For myself I do not like change but have gotten with the new software. I believe most folks need to calm down and relax a bit when it come to peoples opinions on politics and religion. Not everyone thinks or believes the same so go with it and don't get so wound up. May everyone have a Good Fathers Day and enjoy their weekend!

  4. Believe me, I have spoken with several of the moderators numerous times over the past few years about potentially jettisoning all political conversations that have nothing to do with the Second Amendment from the forum entirely. Some folks on TGO seem to be oblivious to the idea that the right to bear arms crosses both sides of the political aisle and that a gay Democrat from New York can be just as passionate about her right to own an AR-15 as a barrel-chested, corn-fed Republican country boy who served two tours in Afghanistan and presently works in the oil fields of Texas to support his wife and 2.5 kids is. We are all supposed to be here to talk about firearms, the Second Amendment, shooting stuff for fun, and using these inanimate objects we all like as means to teach responsibility, put food on the table, keep us from taking up golf on the weekends, and protecting ourselves from those who would do us harm. I think if we stuck to talking about those things, we'd probably pick up a lot of traffic again. Come to think of it, I may have just talked myself into making that a policy change for TGO. Do we really need this place to be yet another damned fountain of political vitriol on the Internet? Unless it's directly related to Second Amendment issues, I think the answer to that is... NEEDS to be... NO.

  6. My opinion for what its worth. I wouldn't prohibit the political threads. After all, no one has to open them. Rather than eliminating them, I would be more inclined for moderators shut them down and lock them more quickly - as quickly as anything they view as hateful or abrasive starts up. There are some topics that always evolve into hate, perhaps those should be banned or quickly shut down. The most glaring of those are about Muslims. On a different note, I think we all need to stop talking about the new site unless there is a specific problem that needs to be fixed. David didn't have a choice - the site had to be upgraded. Anyone we lose because of the upgrade is unfortunate, though there was not an alternative. I don't think people realize how much of a hassle it was for David and team to do the upgrade. This isn't like your iPhone where you plug it in and it works. I do believe the new site is slower and haven't said anything for a few reasons. If it is slower then David knows that and is doing what he can to address it considering the revenue generated by the site. He has chosen to make TGO the best he can rather than turning it into a big money maker. The cost of TGO is extremely reasonable. Until earlier this month I subscribed to The Wall Street Journal online. It was $300 per year and they still pounded me with irritating advertisements. Keep all of this in mind as you think about the new site. There are plenty of paycheck to paycheck folks on here and he keeps the price where they can afford it. TGO and it's roughly ten years of data are on a server somewhere. The cost of a really nice pc is chump change compared to what servers cost.

  8. The political rhetoric is a turn off for a lot of folks. From the conversations I've had with members, they're tired of the hate. Even people who like reasoned discourse get tired of being blasted when they refuse to blindly support the GOP candidate. And, this is a gun forum. You'd think the majority of the traffic might relate to guns.

  10. For myself, I have chose to only comment in certain things because in my opinion, honestly, subjects of a certain nature cause some really ugly conversations. I read threads sometimes and I want to contribute, but then I stop because I know certain members will disagree and then to have to debate back and forth for a simple idea or thought is just not worth it. Also, while I share the views of many of you, I've noticed that certain people have gotten ridiculous on certain posts and it's just not worth associating myself with a thread when I feel like it's borderline hateful. On the bright side, met another member today. Monkey and I were both happy to get to stop and talk to him for a bit. But for me, I'm selective on what I discuss or participate in.

  12. I picked up a 2nd TGO set a year ago or so and wanted to build it different with a longer barrel. I built the lower not long after I bought them but the upper has been on the back burner due to wanting to sbr the other TGO set and buy an Omega suppressor. Since I've finished those two items off the "want/need" list I got started on this again. So before I continue with the build list, the first thing most of you should notice is the birdcage isn't timed. I'm puttin an Odin Works comp on this rifle until my Omega gets out of jail, so the A2 is just there to protect the threads and only had a used crush washer. Pains me to see it on this rifle but I had to do with what I had. 14. Yes, it would be sacrilege. It wouldn’t save you any money; and you would have to like it because you could never sell it for what you would have in it. There are real M1 Garands that are .308, but they were made for the Navy and are hard to find and expensive when you do find them. You can't convert to magazines, why would you want to convert a 30-06 to .308? The Two weapons that meet your requirements (not expensive top of the line, but not stamped out bottom feeders, 308 caliber and removable magazines) would be the Springfield M1A and the AR10. I would look at these: https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/27445/Springfield+MA9102+M1A+STD+308+WAL+BL https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/90757/DPMS+RFLR-G2AP4+GII+AP4+20+1+308WIN7.62NATO+16" https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/90756/S&W+M&P10+Mid-Length+20+1+308WIN7.62NATO+18"

  15. Either get some form of AR platform or go with either a H&K or FN design. I know the flaming is about to begin but M1A's are picky as hell and despite what so many claim about reliability, not all are. You must spend money and/or time to dial them in. Sometimes you get lucky but even still, they are similar to a Garand with that Op rod. They do not like just any and all loads you decide to feed them. There are diehards who will fist fight over it, but there are cheaper and better options than the M14/M1A design. A roller locker like the CETME or HK91 will eat just about anything but they are hard on brass. An FAL will eat just about anything. My personal suggestion is, Get yourself behind an FN FAR. They are not cheap and magazines will bankrupt you at almost $50 each BUT, it is based on the Browning BAR [commercial, NOT military] with some added strength where it was needed. If you ever want shoot at Haffners on a Sunday morning, I will put you behind it and let you have at it. That's my 2 cents. At current inflation it's worth....less.

  16. That's why you wait for sales and buy in bulk. I caught FLC M80 on sale for $9.99 per 20rd box a while back, so I bought 1,000 rounds...

  17. FN FAL....20 round mags are standard but 30s are available. Rugged, dependable and spare parts are plentiful. Most can be had between $1000 and $1400. There are others like the AR10 (and its derivatives), Vepir and Saiga....if you prefer an AK style.

  18. I own a lot of AR's but only have 2 AK's so far. The Zastava M92 PAP is my go to weapon at home. You just can't beat the size, knockdown power for CQB, and the fact that it has more mag capacity than most pistols (Glocks, etc.). It's also serving as a backup vehicle gun. Biggest reason for that is because it's smaller than an AR15 pistol and if it got stolen, it would be easier to swallow losing a $500 AK versus a $2,000+ Mega pistol with all the high end parts.

  19. Ya probably ought to seal the wood with something. Here's the one I left "blonde". Didn't get fancy, I just removed all the wood, removed butt plate, and used several coats of Formby's Low Gloss Tung Oil Finish, inside and out, even down the cleaning rod hole. (It's not anything like using real tung oil, which takes a month or two to do right, this stuff dries in a few hours for each coat). Surprised by how accurate the thing was, I went ahead and added a cheapo 4x scope too.

  21. Lowe's carries a wide variety of soft sided tool bags that have some good features for a gun bag such as: 1) Zippered top 2) Multiple interior pockets 3) Padded shoulder straps and heavy duty handles 4) Reinforced bottoms Add in the benefit that heavy things like guns and ammo don't look out of place in a tool bag with the comment already made about how you typically dress and no one will give you a second look. Plus you just feel and look so much more manly with a tool bag concealing a suppressed AR pistol than a tennis racket bag with a folded AK.

  24. I don't think anyone needs to incite panic buying. Hillary Clinton is going to be the Democratic nominee (and likely next president, sadly) so panic buying is going to happen. Encouraging people to get ahead of the panic buying while there is still time is a 'public service announcement' to my mind - not that most folks on here should need it.

  25. So it is no secret that my heathen was raised around guns. She has been shooting since she was four years old. She started with a single shot bolt action .22 rimfire rifle and has progressed to where she can and does shoot an AR at the range. As she turned 9 last year she was eligible for 4H Shooting Sports this season. We signed her up and her first practice was in April. At her very first practice her coach inquired as to her experience shooting. I explained that she had a handful of years under her and I hoped he didn't have to unteach too much of what I had taught her. To my mild surprise he stated that she was a pure natural and asked if she would be interested in shooting the first match of the season, less than two months away. The Heathen is right handed, but left eye dominant. I have raised her to shoot left handed rifle. I am also cross dominant and it has never hindered me to shoot off-hand to my dominant eye. The coaches embraced this and let her do her own thing. They are all very impressed with her. They call her a natural and have been teaching her on Target Air Rifle, Sport Air Rifle, Target .22 and Sport .22. She also shoots archery. With a recurve. Nearly alone in that discipline as nearly everyone else shoots compound (bare, hunting and target.) The coaches are awesome, and have gone as far as to special order her a left handed Target Air Rifle and a left handed Target .22. They have that much faith in her talent. And on to that talent. Saturday was a dreary rainy day in Kentucky. But it didn't stop her. It was her first competition with less than two months experience on a Target Air Rifle. She placed 3rd. We are beyond thrilled.

  26. The brown Santa paid me a visit yesterday and now I have my second ar pistol completed . I already have one in 300 blk so this time I went with 50 Beowulf . I will post a pic after work today. I'm pretty excited about it so far. The upper is a radical firearms 10.5" 12.7 x42. The radical firearms website has them for $659.00 with a 8 week lead time. Primary Arms has the same exact upper for 459.00 and had it to me in 2 days. I can't wait to try this out. Does anybody else have a ar pistol in this caliber?

  27. https://www.yahoo.com/news/democrats-line-gun-control-national-security-102310047.html Clever spin - If you are against gun control, you are for terrorists getting guns. Sick.

  28. It's all bs, they ask questions such as "Do you think guns should be kept from criminals and terrorists?", then when the answer is of course Yes, they say we support gun control or whatever bs they want to push. I only support dropping the hammer on criminals and terrorists, and the way to do that is to first identify them and target them, and in the case of terrorists eliminate them. In the case of criminals, tack on an extra few years when they use firearms in a crime.

  30. It keeps reverting back to “Everything” when I have selected “Content I have posted in” under “ownership” and keeps reverting back to “content I haven’t read” when I have selected “everything” under “Read status”. I just seem to be spending all my time clicking at the top of the page telling it what I want to do, and then it switches back to whatever it wants every time it refreshes, when before I just toggled back and forth between stuff I had posted in and everything. It took me a couple of minutes to find this thread again, because it wants so desperately to not let me see anything I have already read.

  33. I've used boiled linseed oil to refinish a few stocks myself, its a very long drawn out process with multiple coats. Linspeed is a much easier product that you can either gloss up or dull down so its my first choice. Good score on the WASR, those are nice rifles.

  38. I have a M&P10 that I purchased a while back. If I recall correctly, the price was about $1300. I didn't need it, and I haven't shot it. I only purchased the rifle because I started to feel antsy about the future availability of the platform. Like another member said, I plan to eventually put a rail and glass on it, but I've just been purchasing ammo, because I won't be participating in the overpriced ammo lottery in a few months. Good luck in your search.

  40. No, I don’t think you can build a .308 for what you can buy a complete rifle. There is no Mil Spec for a .308 so parts are limited because you have to pick what you will use and stay with it. You can get a DPMS for under $1500 delivered if you can find them in stock. I would suggest you get what you want on the rifle from the manufacturer. I have a DPMS 308 Panther that I want quad rails for, but I can sell the gun used and buy new with the rails I want for less than I can buy the rails and put them on. I just haven’t got around to it yet. At one time Wal-Mart was selling the cheap DPMS for around $900; I don’t know if they still are. 308 AR’s are fun at the range. But they eat a lot and are expensive to feed.

  45. Man... I hate banning people over stupid stuff. It's a Friday. Seriously. Disagree. Shop at one place, or another. Talk about your disappointment. Talk about the deal you got because some reseller didn't realize they were behind the counter. Write their management team. Write your congressman. But, all we ask here is that you bring something to the conversation besides self righteousness and expensive blue jeans. We're all on the same side here - even if we do tend to make it awfully difficult sometimes.
