I decided that I would visit my favorite LGS this past weekend to see what they had. I decided to take my late '80s model (six shot version - the newer ones are seven shot) Taurus 66, 4 inch barrel .357 with me. I actually almost didn't even fool with taking it and actually almost walked out my door without it except that my gut just kept telling me to bring the Taurus along, just in case. The reason I almost didn't was because, being my only .357, the only thing I would have really considered trading the Taurus for would have been a used Ruger GP100. Being that it seems most folks who have a GP100 keep them, what were the chances that this small, kind of out of the way LGS would have a used GP100 in the case? Well, it turned out that the chances were 100%. In over a decade of visiting that LGS fairly frequently, I don't remember ever having seen a used GP100 at this LGS and the day I decide that I would trade the Taurus if they had one, there it was. I honestly got a bit of an 'oooo-eeeee-ooooo' feeling because of it. Not only did they happen to have the only gun I would have traded the Taurus toward but it was even one of the models that had a wood insert in the grips - a feature I really find appealing and which, unless I am mistaken, Ruger no longer offers from the factory (the GP100 and SP101 revolvers now all come with a rubber grip insert unless I am mistaken.) A deal to trade my Taurus and some cash for the Ruger was reached and this came home with me: Now, let me say that there was absolutely nothing wrong with the Taurus. Whoever ends up with it will have a good revolver. It just wasn't a GP100. One reason I wasn't entirely happy with the Taurus was that it seemed that I could never entirely get the hang of shooting it with anything approaching accuracy despite trying to fine tune the adjustable rear sights. I don't think it was the gun's fault, it just didn't entirely fit me for some reason. I think the Ruger is going to be a much better fit. I brought it home Saturday afternoon and ran a few rounds through it. I didn't have a lot of .357 ammo on hand but I did try a couple of different, factory loads. I tried it on paper at about 10 yards (maybe a little more) with Federal 158 grain JSP and Remington 125 grain SJHP. The JSP were a little high and to the left on the first, two shots so I tinkered with the adjustable rear sights and got better results. I shot a combination of single and double action with both loads. As I said, I didn't have a lot of .357 ammo on hand so I just shot a few but I think I have a pretty good impression of this gun. Good enough to say that I can see it becoming my favorite handgun. Here are the targets with the respective loads. Keep in mind that I do not shoot from a rest, neither rifles nor handguns. These were fired using a two-handed grip in a SD type stance from about ten yards. I think I can improve with practice but getting 'minute of bad guy' the first time I ever fired this or any GP100 wasn't bad, I thought. I should have thought to buy more .357 ammo while I was at the LGS but I was so ecstatic about finding the GP100 that I just didn't. I have been seeing .357 ammo on shelves everywhere lately so I didn't think I'd have a problem finding any. Of course, when I called around to every Walmart in my area then called Academy there was none on any of their shelves. I even 'bit the bullet' and called Gander Mountain but hung up after being on hold for a couple of minutes waiting for the gun counter to pick up. Since I wasn't able to find any more .357 and didn't want to shoot up all that I had, yesterday I decided to see how the Ruger would do with my .38 Special reloads. So far, I have only done two .38 loads so I took a few of each to test them out. I shot them from the same distance and stance as the .357 I shot the previous day. I also decided to try both single and double action with both loads. One thing I found was that, although it is possible to 'stage' the trigger a bit I really didn't do very well when I tried as I tended to shoot low. The trigger is pretty smooth, I think, and I found that I had better results just pulling/squeezing the trigger straight through. Anyhow, more pics so it actually happened: The target on the left represents my single action results with this load. All six shots are represented - I actually managed to put three shots into that one large, ragged hole at the bottom/left of the bullseye. The target on the right was double action and I was trying to 'stage' the trigger on at least some of the shots. Again, the target on the left represents single action and the one on the right was double action. The four holes closest to the bullseye show the results of my giving up on staging the trigger and just pulling straight through.

I really wanted the TMF forfend, but as they were out of stock I did a great mod. I love the profile of the stock Tavor and I bought a switch from a Bullpup forum member of of Ebay. The only permanent modification I did was to drill a small hole through the light rail to feed the wire. The switch came with extreme heat cloth to line the wire where it comes in contact with the barrel, I just shot off 3 full mags as fast as I could in my backyard to make sure the switch never goes off by movement, it is rock solid I love this mod! As soon as my Geissele trigger gets here I will be finished modding this awesome rifle! Before After

We probably have pretty high standards for that reason. Those folks in Kansas City just think they know how to BBQ. :)

In contrast to his prior letter, it seems that somebody seriously yanked his chain. Although the spirit is still there regarding the fiscal process, the overall tone is incredibly different.

  Patience...   The frequently used favorite tactic of the left, incrementalism, can work both ways... a little progress at a time is not as good as passing it all in one fell swoop, but it's better than going in the opposite direction. The killing of the general OC bill was a shame, as well as the "parks" bill, but there were several others that went through OK, including the knife rights bill. We'll get there eventually, just never give up-- the rights-grabbers never do, that's for sure.

Its painfully obvious that Joffery was a bunghole because he was raised to be a bunghole.   Tell someone they are better than everyone else and can do no wrong  as a child, that is what you get.   He was an evil creature, sure, but a tragic one as well.     Its fun watching people guess around at what is gonna happen.  All I can say is, don't even bother trying to predict this plot.

That was the point in me starting this thread. Everything I was doing was pointing at a part that I would consider to be one of the toughest parts in the rifle so I just needed fresh eyes on it. I think I'll pull the bolt out and try just the carrier and if that still gives the problem I'll pull the gas key. The main reason I doubt it's the keys is that I pulled the upper and and the bolt to check gas tube alignment and that all seems fine. Second it the fact that it doesn't matter if I'm actually firing the gun or just run the action by hand with no ammo loaded. It's not that I don't have another BCG to throw in it because I have that, it's mainly just to satisfy my curiousity of wanting to know what is causing it not to work. I'll definitely check the key to make sure though. Thanks!

It looks like the stalling for two months killed the park bill.  The NRA needs to concentrate on getting some new folks elected to fix this problem.

I know the 6" barrels have a purpose, but I'm hopelessly addicted to 3 and 4 inch barreled guns.   One of my personal favorite revolvers is a 3" Smith Model 19 with a T-grip handle. I bought it from a LEO who carried it as a bug for a while. Didn't really like his price, but after seeing and holding it, I happily(almost) gave him 500 for it.   Never regretted it.

Of course those are all very nice holsters, and most respectfully, why does it matter if it collapses or not?  Other than for practice, one does not usually draw and reholster except in the rare instance of an emergency.   Comfort would be my deciding factor.

Rendezvous is highly overrated IMHO...the novelty value of restaurant is ok...but the BBQ is no better than the "fast food " variants...

I don't answer the phone (landline, I don't own a cell) when it rings.  You leave a message, if I want to talk to you I return the call. I almost never do.  Joining all the "no-call" lists helps, if I ever get the kind of harassment the OP talked about I would just unplug the phones for a few days.

I was a pack a day kool super longs smoker. Quit July 3rd 1992, had oral surgery and the dr said don't smoke until your mouth stops bleeding. That was a Friday, Sunday I snuck out side and hot boxed me a kool. I was so drunk and screwed up my wife had to help me back into the house. I through them down and never looked back.

Always been taught and tell newer shooters when they ask me which one  :   get the biggest caliber you can control both accuracy and speed wise  because you will never miss fast enough to win and realistically the whole .38,9mm,.40 .45ACP debate goes out the window if you don't know where to hit your target for maximum effect to end the confrontation. (contrary to popular writings the .45 will not rip a mans arm off and spin him around)   and if you reload your ammo cost is almost a non issue, my 10mm costs almost the same as my .40 or .45 and a 9mm if I owned one wouldn't be noticeably cheaper ( I do load .38 Super and it is a touch more expensive due to using Small Rifle Primers )  and I consider carry ammo an investment not a cost.   the energy chart linked shows these calibers for the most part within 150-200 ft. lbs. of each other for .38 9 40 and 45  so the only decider actually is recoil management and capacity in my view. http://www.chuckhawks.com/handgun_power_chart.htm    I have been known to carry the following though not at the same time,  a .38 Detective Special, a Glock 23, a 1911 in .45ACP, a S&W M-10 and a .22LR    Depends on where I was going,what I was wearing and who I was with.   Grew tired of the hype by gun rags and caliber fanboys years ago, history shows alot of folks have fallen to each of these calibers so run what you can as fast and accurately as you can the energy in any of these calibers will get it done if you do that.
