  1. I prefer the extra 150 fps. The 9mm may reach the kill zone but the extra umph of the .357 Sig ensures it, IMHO. EDIT: I also don't really notice the difference in recoil in a semi-auto. But I'm a big fella with big hands so that may make a difference.

  2. I think you'll like it. An LCP was my standard pocket carry for years. Then came the Shield. lol The LCP was relegated to very occasional use. But I won't let it go. I got way too much in it to part with it. Bought it with a CT laser package right after it came out. Just something about a small pistol and a laser that keeps me holding on to it. I've been pleased with it, and although it is only a bit smaller than the Shield...as you say, it does have it's place.

  3. My first pistol is also my only true full size, a Ruger P85. All the others are smaller. My current idea is for my next purchase to be a what I'd call a modern compact as it really isn't much smaller physically, it's just thinner and lighter than a full size.

  4. I've reached the point that I don't need anything. I have guns to cover all occasions. So I just buy what I like. Had to think about it. The last compact I got was about a 1 1/2 ago when I traded for a Sig P239. Everything I've bought since has been full size.

  6. Thank you @Moped and @hipower. Solid info and much appreciated. It'll be after the first of the year before I can swing one. I'm hoping one pops up in our classifieds that relatively local to me. You never know @pop pop, I am familiar with the concept of using water in the guise of a "Fackler Box". It's set up using 1 gallon ziplock bags of water. According to the article I'll link below by Jim Higginbotham, the correlation is that water is 1.8 times easier to penetrate than ballistic gelatin . I would imagine your setup would provide some interesting info. Love to see some photos of it, mainly because I'm jealous that I don't have a place to set up something like this! Decent article in case anyone's interested. https://www.gunsamerica.com/digest/triggernometry-home-bullet-penetration/

  7. For those of you on the fence, wondering if you should cut the cord, or how to go about it, I would say take each of the services for a test drive and see if it works for you. All of them give you a free week just to kick the tires. All you need is some sort of streaming device, either a Roku or an Amazon FireStick, or a smart TV with one of the apps already built in. The Roku's and FireSticks are on sale now and can be picked up for around $25. Once you have a streaming device, try out each of Hulu, YouTubeTV, Sling, ATT, Fubo. See if you like the interface and if you could see yourself using it instead of the cable box. It took us a minute to get used to it, but its second nature now. Don't cancel your cable at this point, just check out the other services. But try to just use the service for the week you are getting the free preview. Make a list of all the shows you like to watch, and what channel they are on. Then look at each service and see what channels they carry. Cord Cutter News Website has a page that lists all the services and the channels they carry, side by side, so it makes it easy to compare. Once you have decided which service you like best, go ahead and sign up. None of them have long term commitments like cable does, so if you find you don't like one after a while, it's really easy to switch. Or if you want to binge watch a show that is only on one service, switch to it for a month, then switch back. The last thing to do, which is the most satisfying, is to call the cable company and drop your service down to just internet. These days, they don't even really try to keep you on. Everyone is doing it and they have resigned themselves to losing customers. I think they half-assed offered us something, but it was just barely better than what we already had. We said no thanks, and they said OK, no problem. If you want to go hard core and not have any monthly service, but still like the convenience of a cable box with DVR, look at something like Amazon's Fire Recast. It's a little box with a hard drive in it and WiFi. You put it in a place that gets good antenna signal, and then connect it to your home network, and an antenna. Using a FireStick on any TV, it will send the signal across the home network to the FireStick. So you can watch anything your antenna can pick up on any TV, without additional antennas on each TV. PLUS you get DVR. The hard drive in the Recast box will record programs, then you can watch those on any TV with the FireStick. You can even fast forward thru saved shows. We did antenna only for a while on the upstairs TV. I was too cheap to get another cable box. I tried the Comcast app on the FireStick to use instead of the box, but the app is not ready for prime time, and I had to do all kinds of hacks on the remote to make it work. In the end, it was more work than enjoyment. The antenna was nice for just watching local news and such, But I really wanted cable-only channels and DVR, so a streaming service is what we decided on.

  8. My last three were a full-sized Beretta 92, a Browning High Power Competition, and a CZ-75 Phantom SP-01. I rarely buy compacts because all they're good for is carrying and I already have plenty for that role.

  12. I don't have any "small guns"....all of mine are full size. I started carrying when the really had very few small guns...at least none worth carrying in my opinion. So I'm used to it and feel kinda nekkid with anything else. Now the missus has a couple and she's fine with them.

If the drug dealers are smart they will just pay off more people in the LEO and judicial system and go on as usual. Do you realize how many people are making money other than the drug dealers?? All these drug task forces seize a whole lot of money just out there on the west bound side of I-40, and they get to keep it to make their task force larger. There is a war on drugs like I am a award winning brain surgeon!!

  20. Exactly what do you mean by "nose dive"? Are the rounds hanging on the feed ramp itself? At the junction of the feed ramp and barrel? What make and model gun? Several possibilities here. Could be the feed ramp, the magazines, cartridge OAL or maybe the gun just doesn't like those bullets. Does it do this with any other ammo? Need more information. Pictures would help.

  25. Sure. All my range guns or target guns are full size. Compacts, especially Micro compacts are pretty useless for that application.

  26. I would recommend a regular LCP. Shoot it enough to learn the trigger, and you’ll find the reports of them not being accurate are false. Mine has little finish left, and a lot of rounds down the bore. It is as accurate as I am capable.

  27. In my mind I only buy a full size gun if its pretty, rare, or unique because small guns are handier and easier to conceal. That being said the last full size gun I bought brand new was probably a Sig 1911 POW edition...I don't really buy anything new anymore rather let someone else take the "hit". The last full size I acquired was an FN Hipower because it was super unique (deep blued, SFS system, etc)...unless you count my Kriss Vector with PSB lmao.

  29. Of the last four pistols I bought, three were service pistols. A Browning HiPower, a Beretta 92g, a Springfield Hellcat, and a Charles Daly HiPower. In that order. My next “pistol” purchase will be an HK SP5. Does that count as a service pistol?

  32. I like to use water filled milk jugs for ammo testing. Not scientific, but I like it. I built a holder that holds 7 one gallon jugs in a straight row. I sometimes cover the shooting end jug with terrycloth or denim to see if Hollow Point bullets react, and then don't expand, to simulate wearing clothing and shooting through material. You would be surprised how different ammo reacts shooting into water jugs covered with cloth. Most good ammo will totally penetrate 3 to 4 jugs which is 18 to 24 inches, as each jug measures 6". You then divide the number of inches penetrated, through the jugs, by 2 and that gives a good estimate as to real world penetration possibilities. ( divide 24' by 2 and it gives you 12" of possible/estimated penetration. My EDC 357 mag revolver penetrates 4 full jugs and usually dents or lightly enters the 5th one. The Cor Bon DPX all copper penetrates 5 jugs and lightly dents, (sometimes punctures), the back side of the 5th one. I calculate that to work out to 14 to 15" of penetration. Like I said that is not scientific, but give you a cheap measuring stick to compare different ammo results. Some do better than others. I collect empty milk jugs all winter then have a day of shooting fun, usually with my grandsons.

  33. I my summer pistol is a LCP. I really like the size! Great for slipping into a pocket, with a couple of spare mags in the other pocket. That being said, I'd look really hard at the LCP II for just a little more. The sights are much better and so is the trigger. Extra mags are the same price, but they will not fit in the LCP and vice versa. One thing that chaps my arse is that Ruger will not sell these little pistols with two mags. So you end up purchasing a couple of more mags for $30+ a pop! I ended up purchasing 4 all toegther. You might want to look at the little Berreta Pico too. It's about the same size and price as the LCP II and has good sights. Not sure about the trigger. But it also comes with two mags. Ruger be like Berreta and start selling two mags with your pistols!!! https://www.personaldefenseworld.com/2017/05/ruger-lcp-ii-beretta-pico/

  35. About 5 years ago I bought a M1G for $800. 3 years ago, took it to my gun club's "clinic" where we had about 25 guys with Garands, my Garand and 5 "experts." So as things were just getting started, the experts took a walk-around and the guy that came over by me called over his other expert buddies and announced, "Hey guys, I think we may have something here we almost never see...….a genuine WW2 original -----all parts original rifle here" or words to that effect. That was a great moment! That was back in ILLanoy. If anyone here is a real expert on these and reasonably within driving distance of Maryville I'd be interested in your opinion.

  37. Which is why they ain't getting my money. But as you say that, from what I'm guessing is a dislike of the Austrian polymer wonder, you may be forgetting that when they came out they were the innovators with high capacity in a small package as a main selling feature. I find that last bit the ultimate and most failing irony in their lost in the crowd offering. They seem to have forgotten what brought them to the party me thinks.

  38. Smaller pistols are ironically harder to shoot accurately, as you're experiencing, because they just don't give you a whole lot of grip surface to work with. They are a lot like a J-frame Smith and Wesson revolver in that sense. I did some digging and found a video that talks about what Cruel Hand Luke was discussing, and gives it to you in a visual format.

  41. I know I've babbled about this somewhere before, but we picked up an EZ .380 for my wife back in August. It's her first venture into shooting and having tolerated my obsession for over 3 decades it was very welcomed. She's put about 1200 rounds through it thus far, mostly Remington but a few hundred rounds of my handloads. Handloading the .380 costs us right at $0.11/round. I picked up another 1000 rounds of .380 bullets from Everglades ammo over Black Friday for $71.00 shipped. Handloading .380 is not that tedious actually and well worth the time and effort to me. I also picked up 1000 rounds of Speer Lawman .380 for $200.00 from Target Sport, shipping is included but the taxes jacked it up to $0.22 per round...twice what it costs me to handload. But it is a round that incredibly consistent and has more pep than the Remington rounds, and the QC of the Speer Lawman line is top notch. This is the round we keep in the gun for household/SD use at this time. A FMJ RN round is not my preference in a SD round, but this round should allow adequate penetration should the need arise. While researching .380 SD rounds I found some interesting info and links in a thread on another forum where I am a member. Dr Gary Roberts (DocGKR) posts there frequently. I will post a link below that Dr. Roberts said was "reasonable". I don't mean to take him out of context, but I found the linked material very interesting. He also linked to a .380 round produced by Black Hills using the XTP bullet. Actually the XTP bullet seemed to do quite well in the testing that was linked. I've seen the end results of lots and lots on rounds in my workplace (ER). The common denominators in effectiveness seem to be placement and adequate penetration. Who would have thunk it so? Here's some links, I hope they prove beneficial. http://www.black-hills.com/shop/new-pistol-ammo/380-automatic/ http://shootingthebull.net/blog/final-results-of-the-380-acp-ammo-quest/#comment-34323 wrapup of the STB link in a vid format:

  42. We had a good day, yesterday, at the parade. Got to see Loretta Lynn, Kid Rock, and Chris Jansen. All of the stars live in or near Leapers Fork where the parade was held. A great story. My 27 Y O grandson, who has Downs Syndrome, really likes music. He epically likes Chris Jansen's song "Buy me a boat" which was a hit country song sung by Jansen. Jansen was riding in a pontoon boat and his entourage was handing out free fishing poles. My grandson, Cody, was standing by the road when Jansen's boat came past. Cody waved to Jansen and said "Hi Chris' as the boat passed. Jansen looked down, saw Cody, and then asked Cody, "Do you want a fishing pole buddy," to which Cody replied Yes and Chris handed him a pole and told Cody, "Merry Christmas man." Cody came over to where I was standing and said, Look Pop Pop, Chris gave me this. His mother told us what had happened then Cody told me, " Chris Jansen is my friend." A similar thing happened with James Druary, " The Virginian" who stared in that 70s 80's era western which played on TV. James gave Cody a bracelet with his name on it and asked ,Cody and his aunt to sit at his festival dinner table, at the Cowboy Way Festival Dinner, held after the festival in Ardmore Oklahoma a couple years ago. Cody proclaims James Durary is his friend also. They went back to see James, last year, at the festival held then. James remembered Cody and gave him a big hug. James is 84 now and just lost his wife 5 months ago. Cody wants to go see his friend James, again this year as the Festival is being held in San Angelo Texas this year. It is great people take time to notice and be kind to children with special needs. Yes, had a great day. It is always a good time seeing someone show kindness to those less fortunate. You just never know what will happen each day we live. Get to go Worship Our God this morning. Hoping Jesus will be pleased with our remembrance of Him (1 Corinthians 11:23-29) today. Edited to add; Open your Bibles and read the scripture, in 1st Corinthians, yourself, if youv-a-mind-to. It will give you wisdom from above.

  43. We get by very nice with an outside over the air antenna, 50+ channels with around 20 unique and worth watching, at least some of the time. We add Netflix minimal (1 TV and Standard Res) and last year got the Hulu 99 cents a month deal that just ran out and haven't decided if I should cancel since my wife like some of the programing. Just recently added a Roku and still exploring that (no monthly fees if you stay away from the premium stuff). I feed the antenna to a 4 tuner box hooked to my main computer and use Plex to record and arrange my shows so we can watch what we want when we want an skip commercials.

  44. Thanks. I saw that earlier this evening, but appreciate the effort you made. I've used the Geco, but had settled in on the Prvi for my 380 choice. It just seemed a bit hotter to me. Of course that doesn't mean I won't try some on the Beretta Model 81 I got from CF. For my 32 choice, again...I chose the Prvi fmj 71, for the same reason. As for the 25, I'll have to find a load I like in Dad's little Beretta. Really haven't and won't shoot it a lot. But I'm down to I think a box and a half of ???...lol, to save my life; I can't think of the brand on it sitting here. It's a personal choice, but in the past, I've always stayed with the fmj over the hp. Just thought a bit more penetration from it. Not really up on the characteristics of some of the current hp and jhp rounds for the "mouse guns". And that's a little tribute to one of our lost TGO Brothers...Mousegunner. A few years ago, I had a few long, late night conversations with him back during my cancer days. May that gentleman be Resting in Peace with our Maker. And I'm sure he is.

  45. The straw for me was both Comcast and At&t dropped Bein sports, which is the only network that works with he various motorcycle racing organizations. A couple years ago we ended up with retaining our At&t fiber internet, pulling out my old OTA HD antennae from 10 years ago, and signing up with Sling TV. Subsidised by a SSD to record the OTA shows. Recently adding a 4k Firestick for no particular reason other than it was on sale for $25. All run thru a last gen Smart TV. Lots of overlaps in functionality, and enough remotes that my wife has no idea what does what. What I found in that time is, cord cuttings is easiest for those that have just a few or limited requirements, dont particular care about whats on. Meaning they stick to a handful of shows on the major networks and dont use to many premium channels. Like anything, you have to fit a use case for it to really make sense. If you had a high level Cable package with premiums included, to match that ala cart, you start approaching the same overall expenditure. And truth be told, most of the non cable alternatives do sacrifice a little bit of stability compared to the more developed cable solutions. When our DVR stream is botched (happens from time to time) I get nasty looks from my wife who says she wants to go back to cable if its a show she likes. The stability is simply a function of living on the bleeding edge of tech. Cord cutting does not have the maturity afforded by Cable solutions have had had 20+ years of sorting out. But it is improving. Cord cutting has changed quite in just 2 years. So many more players and pricing is starting to increase. The draw you in prices are being ramped up as new services are being offered at higher buy in with the promise of delivering more. The savings margin is still there is you are very simple in your needs. But the delta is closed up a bit. Its interesting to note, that the major network consolidation and buyouts are having an effect. And its in no small part to them being aware of consumer frustration and cord cutting. Their weapon is pulling contracts or raising prices to the alternative service providers to allow them their content. That is part of the reason the prices are increasing. Or in some cases, loosing content on the cord cutting end. Case in point, Sling until last month offered NBC OnDemand. Comcast, who owns NBC said...hey....no way, you have to show us the money because peeps are ditching our BS boxes. Sling told them to go take a hike. So now, you no longer see those offered on on their service, and Fox's parent company did the same with them. Sling on the down low removed both from the menu. You pay the same as a result, just lost content for those handful of times the OTA DVR recording is messed up. Now consider that Disney is trying to buy the world, trying to end around the FCC regs of one company not owning more than one network....ABC and Fox, Marvel....its going to be interesting. Long way to say....enjoy it while you can. Big Money is not happy about lost profits and is going to make it harder in the future.
