  2. So if you wouldn't bring a rifle into the hotel then you'd leave it in the vehicle unattended in the parking lot? It's coming into the hotel with me (and everything else I don't want stolen) and getting taken with me when I leave the room. I don't even like leaving my clothes in a hotel room unattended.... Now the biggest problem here is that it was in Chicago with their draconian gun laws. If this were Jackson MS, or Memphis Tn, or Savannah GA, or Fort Walton FL, or Harrisburg PA, or Shepherdsville KY, or Little Rock AR or Prescott AZ, or Ann Arbor MI, or any number of other cities I have traveled to either taking or teaching classes or just simply vacationing (with a long gun and loaded mags each time) then this would not be an issue. But the fact that it was A in Illinois and B in Chicago is where this becomes a problem and C if you are going to have to leave it in the room you are going to need to put the do not disturb sign up and hide it somewhere like behind the fridge or somewhere that the casual observer does not see without having to put forth some effort.

  5. My clothing, the environment I'm in, and any number of factors determine the weapon I carry. In my younger days it was a 1911 or nothing. Now a Shield or 442 is a common choice.

  6. That is very similar to one I picked up recently. I stuck a hogue pistol grip on and put in an op sol mini clip so I can load it up with the 1.75 inch mini buckshot shells. So far so good.

  11. I remember a time when there wasn’t a legal carry option. I have to admit I was partially wrong. I was unaware that prior that “prior to 1989 a civilian could openly carry an army or navy revolver in the hand. It could not be holstered or concealed.”

  12. You are correct that there are many millions of people who carry every day regardless of what the gun laws are and in clear violation of them. I do however believe that it is unfair and incorrect to assume that because one chooses to carry in violation of the law they are also the type of person to violate the life liberty or property of others. If the choice is to carry in violation of the law, or put oneself at risk and at the mercy of those who may decide that one is a target for which they wish to do harm there is no choice there at all. “In the first place, it would efface from everybody’s conscience the distinction between justice and injustice. No society can exist unless the laws are respected to a certain degree, but the safest way to make them respected is to make them respectable. When law and morality are in contradiction to each other, the citizen finds himself in the cruel alternative of either losing his moral sense, or of losing his respect for the law—two evils of equal magnitude, between which it would be difficult to choose.” ― Frédéric Bastiat, quote from The Law

  13. Reasonable Answer: Walther PDP with a Holosun 509T dot optic on a CHPWS mounting plate. Irrational Answer: Staccato C2 DPO with the same setup. Unreasonable because it's just silly expensive. I have both. I don't really prefer one over the other. If I didn't have both, I'd just buy the Walther and call it a day.

  15. I’ve got into the Ring cameras. New house so we tried the Ring door bell. The Echo Show is linked to so you can see who it is. Or ask Alexa to “show me the front door” and she does. Looking at getting something for the back of the house too. We’ve already got a flood light so the camera might be a little cheaper.

  16. I’ve been running Blink cameras for a couple of years. Been happy with them for the most part but I have one complaint and it’s an aggravating one. If you get a notification that there was “movement detected” and you pull up that camera, it will not let you “view live” for the time period that it’s recording the next video. It pops up “camera busy” until that video is finished recording. It is wireless so if you have it facing the road and it picks up all the street traffic you will be changing batteries more often. You can also block out the zones the the road is in so that helps. I always use Energizer lithium batteries for these cameras. I recently ordered a Wyze cam V3 (not wireless) and have the cord running through edge my garage door opening. It has been great so far. Read different reviews on the wireless version but they weren’t horrible so I’m not saying to not get them either. Setup was easy and it takes good videos. I think I paid $20 for the year for CamPlus feature which gives full length recording instead of 12 seconds and will pick up only people if you choose to set it that way. You get a free trial of this CamPlus service and don’t have to pay for the extra, but I do recommend it. Being a wired camera is a little more involved for setup on the walls but it’s nice knowing I won’t have to keep climbing a ladder to change the batteries. To me I always feel like I’m grabbing the attention of everyone who drives by while I’m changing the Blink camera batteries. Wyze so far has been much more impressive to me but I’m using both setups. I’ll eventually move to only Wyze I’d imagine.

  17. Great news in the LCP world! The LCP Max in .380 is just now becoming available. Same size as the LCP2, but standard mag is 10+1 and you can also get a 12+1. MSRP is $449. I just reserved one for $369. Gonna load it up with the new Federal Hydra-Shok Deep ammo, which is revolutionary for .380. Check out the reviews on LCP Max and the Federal ammo. The gun writers are going crazy over both. Now we can have a true pocket gun with 11 or 13 rounds of great performing defensive ammo.

  18. My choice is always wired cams over wifi. I use cams that run off POE lines (power over internet, one ethernet cable provides both access to the network and power) that connect to my home LAN. I also do not allow the cams access to the internet, nor do I use their online storage. Using the provided cloud storage and and the aps that allow you to view remotely over the internet also allows the cams to "talk" to the Chinese servers all of these utilize for storage, updates, etc. While I'm sure that works ok for most applications, it does open your home network up to the wider world, and whatever shenanigans the Chinese are up to at the moment, something I'm not comfortable with. I also further isolate the cams and other "internet of things" devices onto a separate network via VLans, something I'm still working on. As for remote access, I'm using a VPN setup, which allows me to access the parts of the network that the cams run on. It's been an educational experience learning how all this works, as I started out knowing less than most folks grandmothers about networking, security, etc. ...

I have a dvr backed up constant security camera setup and also a ring doorbell and cam...had I to do it over again...i would go all ring...they have battery and corded options and you cant beat their complete year of monitoring for only $100 (no contract)....Costco runs deals on their equipment several times a year which also purchasing from costco gives you that costco lifetime guarantee. Go Ring and dont look back.

  20. I have a Ring doorbell and a regular lighted (the non-floodlight one) cam for the deck. We like it. Took a bit to get the deck camera aligned the way we want, but that was just us fiddling. App is easy to use and will alert you to a low battery, To make that easier, I bought 1 extra battery that I can swap in when one needs recharged. The deck cam could take 2 batteries, but does just fine on 1. We need to get one more, maybe the floodlight, to mount on the deck rail and look over the pool. One cool thing is if you have a regular doorbell where you can mount the doorbell cam, it can run off the bell power. Unfortunately, I could nor do that the way our door is. If you want a regular doorbell feel instead of it just buzzing on your cell, get the chime that is a separate item. We do not have it though.

  21. I have an Arlo wireless 4 camera system that was around $400. They are rechargeable and last about a month. It has free video storage for a week or so. It was pretty simple to set up and use and I’m happy with it. Keep in mind that a wireless camera is only as good as your wi-fi signal.

  22. I have both Nest cameras and Blink cameras. I like the set up and free storage of the Blink cameras much better than the Nest cameras. I also like, for my application, the Blink cameras being battery operated. The Nest cameras required me to run a cord. I have 3 Blink cameras inside of the house, 1 Nest camera inside of the house and 2 Nest cameras outside of the house. I tried using the Blink cameras outside of the house but they did not work well for me as an exterior camera. A lot of this has to do with how strong and reliable your wi-fi is. I needed to put in a wi-fi booster for the Nest cam furthest from my router. Keep in mind with these cameras that they are only as good as your wi-fi and when you wi-fi is down, so are the cameras. No notifications and no event recording.

  23. Do you already have a overall home security system? Having systems that are compatible with each other makes life much easier than having a bunch of different apps to use. Some folks don't plan ahead well and end up with a home security system, outside cameras, video doorbell, etc. and none interface with each other.

  24. Not to derail, but man I remember Craig's. I should have hung out there more back in the early 90's. @Moped Nicely done. The 7 round tube is a good option. I don't like FDE guns, but I always figure shotgun furniture is easy and cheap to swap most of the time. I have an 870 Tactical that I bought a bit beat up and missing parts. A few bucks later, it is good to go. Only thing I did not replace was the missing rear ghost sight. It was crazy ecpensive, so I just put a rail on it and a red dit. I like cheap guns, but I have to be mindful that sonetimes cheap just means it is crap. A $75 gun that you can't gett parts for is useless.

  26. In this case, I may. But I also study gun laws before I visit a place. I wouldn't bring a long gun to a Chicago hotel and I certainly wouldn't leave it out for the maid to find.

  27. From someone who carries a suppressed AR 10 through a lobby of a motel 5 or 6 times a year, this seems alien to me. To be honest, I usually only have 250-300 rounds on me. The funniest moment was when I was covered head to toe with blood at a Denny's with a white buddy of mine at 3:00 am. We were talking to a black couple for an hour about everything. Great people and great waitress. Not one person batted an eye or asked what the hell was going on. GOD BLESS TEXAS.

  30. Sidearm and PDW with four magazines sounds about right for that zone. The question is why it’s in the hotel. The threat is outside the hotel room. With the proper concealment he should have had at least the sidearm

  31. Thanks for everyone's input! After work, I ran to the grocery store for things to make BLTs for dinner. On the way I stopped at my LGS and checked out their selection. I found a like new Mossberg Maverick with a FDE colored stock set and the 7 shot extended tube magazine for $200. It's in lay-a-way for the next couple of weeks, then it will come out. I swear I don't think it's been fired. No scratches on it or anything! They said an ex-employee came in and traded it in. He'd had it at a cabin and never used it. It does have the bead front sight, and not a rifle blade, but I've shot them before and I'm comfortable with it. I think it's a bargain! Think I will still look at picking up one of those Benelli clones in the future though.

  35. There are many people in this country that carry guns anywhere they want everyday and are not restricted at all by what the gun laws are. They probably number in the millions. They also commit armed robbery, murder, rape, sell drugs, rob banks, burglarize homes, jack cars and trucks, commit home invasions and such like. They will continue to carry guns anywhere they want everyday and will not be restricted at all by what the gun laws are. They probably number in the millions.

  36. Is ammunition becoming available again? I rode past a gunship in Crossville yesterday and their outdoor reader-board was advertising 9mm at $21.00 a box. I didn't stop, so I don't know what brand it was, but I was encouraged to actually see ammo ADVERTISED as available. Now if I could just find some primers.....

  38. The problem is that the less it will penetrate drywall the less it will penetrate the bad guys.... There are no legit "bumper sticker sized" answers to this. Things are complex. If you want a round that will not penetrate things you need either a light weight thing (ping pong balls are notoriously bad at penetrating things) or something designed to break apart that is moving extremely fast. Some people recommend birdshot for shotguns. In my opinion that's a suboptimal idea. The tiny little pellets make penetration through multiple layers of drywall less likely but at the same time they also make penetration deep enough to hit vital organs less likely on the guy or guys you are trying to stop. Birdshot wounds tend to be nasty looking surface wounds with little penetration unless you shoot them from 3 feet away (or closer) . I'm frankly more concerned with making that guy who is trying to kill me stop what he is doing immediately when I hit him than I am about what happens in an uninhabited room IF I miss him. And in fact my HD shotgun is loaded with full power 000 buck because semi autos run more reliably with full power shells and 000 patterns tighter than full power 00 loads due to the way the pellets are stacked (8 vs 9 ) in the shell. Tighter pattern is less likely to have a "flier" that misses. If you run a pump I'd roll with the Federal Low Recoil Flight Control 00 or Flight control #1 buck. Flight control delivers extremely tight patterns ...especially at across the room distance. Bird shot is for birds...not people , some of whom are the size of black bears. On .223 things are complicated by barrel twist. If you want the least penetration and a round that will still probably perform well enough to stop someone reliably then the 40 grain Blitzking or Hornady V-Max round at about 3600 - 3700fps will break up when it hits something but still ruin the bad guy's day when he gets hit with it. IIRC Phoenix PD had good results with it out of their Steyr Augs in the 1990s. The down side is that a 1/7 twist barrel can spin the jackets off of 40 grain bullets in flight because of the extreme speed. But then again how far will they be flying in your house? Maybe 7 or 8 yards? If you are running a 1/7 twist I might go with a 50 or 55 gr V-max . The 55gr V-max is what I have loaded in my AUG (1/9 twist) for indoors and 55 gr gold dots for outdoor use. It seems odd that we never seem to really devote much time to worrying about our Gold Dots or HST or DPX rounds in our CCW pistols penetrating too much on a miss in the streets where there is a whole world of people out there to potentially be hit but we are terrified of what a miss will do inside a house.... This seems kind of ironic when we are shooting a shoulder fired weapon which is far easier to hit with than a pistol and the longest shot you are taking in most houses is overwhelmingly likely to be less than 10 yards and generally at someone who is closing distance with you.... I think if we just spent more time actually becoming better shooters the other stuff takes care of itself.

  43. I’d start reevaluating that thought process if I were you. If you’re talking about the 3 shot, 3 seconds, 3 yards bit, that’s an often repeated, but wholly incorrect piece of data that is far more myth than fact. The data used to build that stat comes from NYC officer involved shootings when revolvers were the standard issue sidearm. More recent data is that the number is around 8 rounds fired. Still, that doesn’t negate the need to carry a spare magazine to fix a malfunction were one to occur.

  44. I have different guns for different places. I'm working from home right now and have on a 1911 in an old Jackass shoulder holster. There is an FNH FNS beside my bed and I have a vest that I wear that has a S&W 442 in it that I throw on, when I do to the store. And yesterday, I carried a Ruger LC9S Pro, which actually is my normal carry pistol. And I hike with a Taurus .357 Tracker with a 4 inch barrel in a Recon Pouch on my chest. I'm one of those that has different pistols for different things. I'm odd. but I'm comfortable with either a revolver or a semi-auto. Doesn't matter which.

He's a very discerning off road enthusiast and he says they are really great and capable off road vehicles. Its a true contender for the Jeep in the "off the lot off road capable options". If the fords have any level of better reliability than Jeep they'll see good sales

I usually carry even when out in the garden or cutting the grass. Bad guys are opportunists and usually prey on the elderly, weak or the person that isn't aware of the situation. Be safe out there boys and girls, this isn't Kansas and it's not the wonderful world we grew up in.
